To get you in the mood for next weekend’s Kenmac Energy Opening Spiel, here are a few photos from past events. I never noticed before how much the Simpsons resemble the Flintstones! And that monster and cowboy look a lot alike, too!

The Thursday night draw starts tonight, Oct 22/09. Please come to the Club, and you will be placed on a team as you arrive.

CORNWALL — Residents here appear to agree with the Town of Cornwall that it is time to replace the 40-year-old Cornwall Civic Centre.
The centre, located at 29 Cornwall Road, is home to the Cornwall Curling Club as well as numerous community organizations.

Two Cornwall Curling Club teams were in the finals of the 15 and Under division of the Codiac Curling Maritime Junior Bonspiel, held over the weekend at the Beausejour and Beaver curling clubs in Moncton. The Veronica Smith foursome from Cornwall defeated the Cathlia Ward team from Fredericton’s Capital Winter Club to win the junior women’s side, while Cornwall’s Tyler Smith rink finished as runner-up to the Alex MacNeil squad from the Halifax Mayflower club in the junior men’s final. Forty-six teams took part in the 3 day event, with divisions for 15 and Under and 20 and Under. No results were available for the 20 and Under side.
Head icemaker Lance Lowther reports that the rocks will not be cool enough to permit daytime curling on Monday Oct. 19, but will be ready for the evening Introduction to Curling session Monday evening from 7-9 pm. Daytime curling will get underway on Tuesday Oct. 2o at 10 am, with evening curling starting Thursday the 22nd (following the three nights of Intro to Curling), and Junior curling getting underway on Monday the 26th. The Junior High Performance Camp will take place, as scheduled, on Saturday and Sunday the 24th and 25th. Junior registration goes on the 19th and 20th from 7-9 pm, with new adult members registration Oct. 19-21, also from 7-9 pm.
In other words, the ONLY change is that daytime curling startup is delayed until Tuesday.
Many of you will remember the visit to our Club from Dr. Heather Mair of the University of Waterloo Department of Recreation and Leisure, at our 2007 Countryview Golf Closing Spiel (she is standing up at the back of this photo).

Heather was doing research for a paper on the impact of curling clubs in rural communities, and visited 18 clubs during her research. She has now published her paper, entitled “Club Life: Third place and Shared Leisure in Rural Canada”, which presents a day in the life of the (fictitious) Walnut Lake Curling Club, and then draws some conclusions about the role that curling clubs play in small communities.
I am sure you will recognize a bit of our Club in the story of life at the Walnut Lake club, and invite you to read her paper, which you can find on Danny Lamoureux’s blog at the following link:
