Club buys Defibrillator, with aid of generous donors

January 24th, 2010 No comments

Last Monday evening at the beginning of the early draw, one of our members, Paul Horne, was beset by what appears to be a severe heart attack. We understand Paul’s condition is serious and our hopes and prayers are with him and his family at this time. We wish to thank all those who took an active role in the response to this emergency and in particular we thank Krista Affleck whose active and prompt participation in CPR until paramedics arrived, was probably crucial in saving his life.

As a result of this incident and a recent similar one at the APM Center, the subject of an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) quickly surfaced as a necessity at our club. The subject was “fast tracked” and management quickly looked at various options for the purchase of one. The club’s Seniors offered to pay for approximately one half the costs. As a result of an article in the Guardian, Cornwall Physiotherapy & Sports Rehabilitation, owned by Ralph Manning, generously offered to donate $1500 towards the purchase of the unit. Unanimous Board approval was obtained and it is my pleasure to announce that the unit has already been purchased and will be installed at the club shortly.

It is important to note that training in the use of the AED and in CPR is required. Staff will be trained in its use and a training session has already been booked for Sunday  February 21st at 1 pm, the earliest convenient date available. The training of volunteers in the use of the AED will be required to complement the staff however, we are not certain how many can be accommodated. This will depend on the number of persons and costs, etc. Please register your name with Bev if you are interested in participating in this course. Thank you.

Fullerton, Gallant end play at Canadian Juniors

January 22nd, 2010 No comments

(PEICA/CCA) The hope that the Brett Gallant rink would repeat as Canadian junior curling champions was dashed this afternoon, as they lost an 8-3 battle to Ontario (Jake Walker of Kitchener), as the two teams fought it out for the third and final playoff spot, entering the match with 8-3 records.

Manitoba (Alex Forrest of Manitoba) had already clinched a berth in Sunday’s final at 8:30 pm Atlantic, live on TSN, finishing with a 10-2 mark. Saskatchewan (Braeden Moskowy of Regina) earned a berth in Saturday evening’s semi-final at 8:30 pm Atlantic after defeating Manitoba this morning, 7-4, completing the round robin with a 9-3 record.

On the women’s side, PEI’s Sarah Fullerton rink, already out of contention, lost to 12-3 to undefeated Rachel Homan of Ottawa, finishing tied for 6th place with Manitoba with a 6-6 win-loss record. Northern Ontario finished second at 9-3, with Sask. ,  BC, and Alberta tied for the final spot at 8-4. That will necessitate two tiebreakers, one at 10:30 am and one at 3:30 pm AT on Saturday, meaning the women’s semi-final would go at the same time as the men’s on Saturday night…8:30 pm.

Cornwall Curling Club thinking ‘seriously’ about buying defibrillator

January 21st, 2010 No comments

The Guardian

The president of the Cornwall Curling Club says the volunteer board is giving serious thought to purchasing an automated external defibrillator after a Charlottetown man suffered a heart attack at the club Monday night.
“It’s definitely on the agenda,” John De Luca said Wednesday. “We’re talking to people. We might even try to fast-track it. We’re talking seriously about it.”
A Charlottetown man, said to be in his late 50s, suffered a heart attack on one of the ice sheets Monday around 7 p.m.
Benny Grant, former fire chief with the North River fire department, said firefighters arrived on the scene within minutes. Grant credits those at the club with helping save the man’s life.
“There was a lady at the time when we got there who was performing CPR on him,” Grant said. “We got there with our defibrillator and we were going to put the paddles on him when the ambulance came along. It took a little while. They shocked him a couple of times. After a while he came to and started breathing on his own.”
A similar incident occurred recently when Gordon Crozier of Cornwall suffered a heart attack at the APM Centre. That facility has a defibrillator which was used after the man went into full cardiac arrest. Crozier’s family has publicly thanked Communities 13 Inc. management, which runs the APM Centre, for purchasing a defibrillator.
“I think it’s a good idea,” said Grant. “It’s a cheap piece of equipment to have around. You may never use it but at least it would be there.”
Grant says he knows the man who suffered the heart attack on Monday night at the curling club.
“He’s not out of the woods yet. He’s got a ways to go yet. It’ll take time. Doctors don’t like to call it a massive heart attack. They call it a significant heart attack.”
Defibrillators cost approximately $2,500. A cost-sharing program with the Department of Health and Wellness gives rinks $1,000 to put towards the purchase. Anyone interested in buying one can do it by submitting an application to Recreation P.E.I.
De Luca says the incidents at the APM Centre and curling club also draws attention to another important fact — the need for people to get CPR training.
“The first people who treated him had just taken courses on CPR and knew what to do and that was really critical. I think a lot more people should be taking those courses.”
The curling club president said that doesn’t take away from the importance of having automated external defibrillators on scene in the event something happens.
“We are serious about it, it is on the agenda and we are looking at putting it on the fast track. The (curling) season ends by the end of March. We don’t know whether we’ll have one before that time but we’re looking at even that possibility.”

How to operate AED:

— Regardless of which brand of AED is used, the only knowledge required to operate it is to press the “ON” button.
— Once the AED is turned on, it actually speaks to you in a computer-generated voice that guides you through the rest of the procedure.
— You will be prompted to place a set of adhesive electrode pads on the victim’s bare chest and, if necessary, to plug in the pads’ connector to the AED.
— The AED will then begin to automatically analyse the person’s ECG rhythm to determine if a shock is required. It is critical that no contact be made with the person while the machine is analysing the ECG. If the person is touched or disturbed, the ECG may not be accurate.
— If the machine determines that a shock is indicated, it will automatically charge itself and tell you when to press the button that will deliver the shock.
— Once the shock is delivered you will be prompted to resume CPR.

Ontario women, Saskatchewan men lead at the Juniors

SOREL-TRACY, January 17 (CCA)…Ontario (Rachel Homan of Ottawa) is the only unbeaten women’s team at the 2010 M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors, while Saskatchewan (Braeden Moskowy of Regina) tops the men’s standings after two days of play at Colisée Cardin and Club de curling Aurèle-Racine.

Ontario had a bye Sunday evening but leads its 12 rivals with a 3-0 mark.  Northern Ontario and Saskatchewan are at 3-1, while Manitoba, British Columbia and Alberta are deadlocked with 2-1 records.

In Draw 6 results Sunday evening, Saskatchewan (Trish Paulsen of Saskatoon) beat up on Northwest Territories (Amanda Moizis of Hay River), 13-3; Alberta (Nadine Chyz of Calgary) proved a 6-3 winner over Nova Scotia (Tara LeGay of Bridgewater); British Columbia (Dailene Sivertson of Victoria) stole one in the ninth and four in the 10th end for a 9-5 shocker over Prince Edward Island (Sarah Fullerton of Cornwall) and Northern Ontario (Kendra Lilly of Sudbury) had no trouble with New Brunswick (Jessica Daigle of Saint John), 9-2.

On the men’s side, three teams have yet to taste defeat – Saskatchewan at 4-0, followed by idle Manitoba  (Alex Forrest of Winnipeg) and Ontario (Jake Walker of Kitchener) at 3-0.  New Brunswick is next at 3-1.

Saskatchewan’s Moskowy roared back from a 6-2 fifth end deficit to trim Northwest Territories (Colin Miller of Yellowknife), 8-6.   New Brunswick (Josh Barry of Rothesay) fell from the unbeaten ranks, losing to Northern Ontario (Christian Tolusso of Thunder Bay), 9-6.  Nova Scotia (Scott Garnett of Halifax) stole one in the 11th end after taking two in the 10th to hand Alberta (Brendan Bottcher of Edmonton) its first loss as well.

In the other game, Prince Edward Island (Brett Gallant of Charlottetown) set a Juniors
record of 42 career wins (round robin and playoffs) as a skip, defeating British Columbia (Tyler Klymchuk of Langley), 7-4, eclipsing the 41 game-won mark held by Quebec’s Martin Crête.  Gallant, the defending Canadian champion, is also making a record-tying sixth Juniors appearance, equalling Brad Gushue of St. John’s.

The victory moved Prince Edward Island to 2-2, tied for sixth with Nova Scotia.

Round robin play continues through Friday, after which the first place teams will advance directly to Sunday’s finals, live on TSN.  The second and third place teams will meet in semi-finals on Saturday.

The two winners will then represent Canada at the 2010 World Juniors in Flims, Switzerland.

Fullerton beats Manitoba to go to 2-1, Gallant loses to drop to 1-2 at Juniors

January 17th, 2010 No comments

SOREL-TRACY, January 17 (CCA)…Manitoba’s Alex Forrest of Winnipeg won a big one this afternoon, an 8-7 extra end squeaker over defending Canadian champion Brett Gallant of Charlottetown in Draw 5 action at Colisée Cardin.

Not only did the victory keep the Deer Lodge Curling Club team undefeated, but its 3-0 record is good enough for a share of top spot at the M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors, along with New Brunswick, Ontario and idle Saskatchewan (Braeden Moskowy of Regina).

The win also denied Gallant another chance to set a record for career wins as skip at the Juniors.  He’s currently tied with Quebec’s Martin Crête, at 41 wins, in his record-tying sixth appearance.

Down 5-3 at the fifth end break, Manitoba took deuces in the sixth and ninth ends to go up 7-6, before Prince Edward Island, which dropped to 1-2, forced the extra with a single in the 10th.    Gallant  was in a position to steal in the 11th end before Forrest cleared out his opponent’s counter with his first rock.

“We had a tough start but we fought back and never gave up,” explained Forrest, making his national debut.  “I made sure, knowing how the ice was, that I was tight with my first one (in the extra end) to at least hit something to our benefit.

“I lost the (provincial) final playing third two years ago.  Last year, we didn’t do so great.  This is half a new team.  We’ve just clicked pretty good all year, having a real good year.  We’re off to a good start, no complaints right now.”

In other men’s results, New Brunswick (Josh Barry of Rothesay) doubled up on Quebec (Kevin Rivest of Montreal), 6-3; Ontario (Jake Walker of Kitchener) disposed of Yukon (Thomas Scoffin of Whitehorse), 6-2  and Nova Scotia (Scott Garnett of Halifax) edged Newfoundland and Labrador (Kelly Schuh of St. John’s), 6-5, in winning its first game.

On the women’s side, Manitoba (Breanne Meakin of Winnipeg) fell from the unbeaten ranks, losing to Prince Edward Island (Sarah Fullerton of Cornwall), 11-4.  That leaves Ontario (Rachel Homan of Ottawa) as the only undefeated team at 3-0, after a tough 9-5 battle with Yukon (Sarah Koltun of Whitehorse).

With the loss, Manitoba dropped to 2-1, tied with four others for second place: New Brunswick, Saskatchewan (Trish Paulsen of Saskatoon), Prince Edward Island and Northern Ontario (Kendra Lilly of Sudbury).

New Brunswick (Jessica Daigle of Saint John) edged Quebec (Camille-Marie Lapierre of Otterburn Park), 5-4, while Newfoundland and Labrador (Jen Cunningham of St. John’s) also won its first, 9-2 over Nova Scotia (Tara LeGay of Bridgewater).

Play continues with Draw 6 tonight at 8:00 pm  Atlantic at both Colisée Cardin and Club de curling Aurèle-Racine. PEI men and women are  playing BC in this draw.
