Sterling Stratton gets to enjoy lawn bowling with the help of a new apparatus

August 25th, 2010 No comments

(Charlottetown Guardian) Not even a pair of arthritic knees can stop Sterling Stratton of Charlottetown from playing the sports he loves.

In 1988, at the age of 50, Stratton thought his curling days were over, but he was able to return to the rink after an extensive hiatus with the assistance of a device called a delivery stick.

He has never looked back since, winning numerous championships with the Cornwall Curling Club’s stick curling team.

The delivery stick hooks to the curling stone’s handle and allows players with restricted mobility to deliver a rock, using a release mechanism, from an upright position out of the hack.

With the use of a device that applies the same logic as the delivery stick, called a bowling arm, Stratton is again able to conquer his physical limitation and continue playing another sport he loves — lawn bowling.

Still more volunteers sought for The Dominion ice crew

August 21st, 2010 No comments

Our head icemaker Lance Lowther is still recruiting  volunteers for ice maintenance for the Dominion Canadian Curling Club Championship (Nov. 23-28).  Two or three more volunteers are needed.

For this event, the ice will need to be scraped after every draw . The Dominion provides ice volunteers (working a required number of shifts) with jackets, and Lance has been asked to send in the sizes as soon as he has the ice crew together. If you are interested in helping with the ice, please  call Lance at home at 566-2230.  Thanks for helping out!
