Donovan edges Abraham in extra end, Kelly blanks Burris to win Fall Fling Jr. Cashspiel

The 11th annual Fall Fling Junior Cashspiel, with a full draw of 24 teams representing all four Atlantic provinces, wrapped up this afternoon at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside.

In the junior men’s division, two “Mainland” teams, both with Island connections, went undefeated through the round robin and semi-final and met in the final, with the Michael Donovan foursome from Curl Moncton, which is coached by Summerside native Daryell Nowlan, and includes his sons Josh at third, and Jacob as alternate player, edging the Ryan Abraham squad from the Halifax Mayflower Curling Club, which includes third stone Brooks Roche from Montague, by a 10-9 score in an extra end.  The teams were tied at 3-3 going into the 5th end, where Donovan scored five points. Abraham fought back with deuces in ends six and eight, and single steals in nine and ten to tie the game, but Donovan had hammer in the final end, scoring the winning single.

Team Abraham edged the Liam Marin foursome from the Thistle-St. Andrews club in Saint John 6-5 in their semi-final game. The Marin rink includes Crapaud’s Tyler Smith at third. Team Donovan stole a single in the 5th and a deuce in the final end in a 10-6 win over the Alex MacFadyen rink from the host Silver Fox club in the other semi.

In the women’s final, the Annika Kelly squad blanked their Charlottetown Curling Complex clubmates the Alexis Burris team, by a 9-0 score (some Burris members are also Cornwall members). A steal of five points in the sixth end brought the game to an early conclusion.  Lauren Ferguson was skipping Team Burris, as Burris was sidelined by an injury.
