Jamie Newson edges Mitchell Schut to win PEI Mixed “C” event and bye to ch’ship final

The Jamie Newson rink from the Silver Fox and Charlottetown curling clubs, scored a single point in the eighth end after blanking ends four through seven, to edge the Mitchell Schut team from Cornwall 3-2 Sunday evening to win the “C” final of the PEI Mixed Curling Championships at the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton, and a bye to the 2 pm Monday championship game.

There were separate winners of each of the three modified triple knockout sections, with the Tyler MacKenzie rink from Charlottetown winning the “A”, Team Schut taking the  B, and Newson, along with third Melissa Morrow, 2nd stone Andrew MacDougall, and lead Miranda Ellis capturing the final section.

According to the rules, in the event that there are three section winners, the team that played in the most section finals gets the bye to the championship final. The Newson team, the only one to play in all three section finals, will now play the winner of the 10 am game between the MacKenzie and Schut foursomes, at 2 pm Monday, for the right to advance to the Canadian Mixed Curling Championships, November 5-10 2018 at the Fort Rouge Curling Club in Winnipeg.
