Gord Peters foursome wins annual golf tourney

June 19th, 2010 admin No comments

The weather couldn’t have been any better again this year at the Cornwall Curling Club’s annual 9 hole best ball golf tournament at beautiful Countryview Golf Course in Fairview, with a great turnout again this year. As usual, there was some fine golfing on the course:

There was also lots of great conversation, and a drink or two, on the deck:

There were two barbecues in action, as Kimball (pictured), Bob, Carole, and others cooked the burgers and sausages to perfection:

Finally, all the teams had finished their rounds, and it was time to hand out the hardware. Roy Coffin picked up a prize for closest to the line (he was ON it), and for the long drive on hole number 6 (open to men and women).

Linda Fairhurst was also a double winner, capturing both closest to the pin and longest drive honours for the women.

The team of (right to left) Neil Smith, Marg Stewart, Eileen Blanchard, and Rupert Sweetapple won the coveted award for the “Most Determined” team. There were actually three teams tied for the highest score, and the Smith team were the lucky winners of the random draw.

The winning team of the day was the foursome of Gord Peters, Melody Beck, Matt Thomson, and Mike Lafontaine:

In the unlikely event that they close it by Saturday, we’ll let you know, but, as of now, the normal route is still in effect, and no start date for the construction has been announced.

Two Cornwall Curling Club skips, Veronica Smith and Sarah Fullerton, were among the winners of the PEI Curling Association’s annual ADL/Sport PEI Curling Awards last night at the Charlottetown Curling Club.

The Kathy O’Rourke rink were the winners of the Team of the Year honours. The team, which includes skip Kathy O’Rourke, who throws second stone, Erin Carmody, who throws fourth, third stone Geri-Lynn Ramsay, and lead Tricia Affleck, were the first PEI team ever to play in a final game at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts Canadian women’s curling championships. Other nominees in the category were last year’s winners, the Brett Gallant foursome, and the Sarah Fullerton team, provincial junior women’s champions. Carmody and O’Rourke were also co-winners in the Female Adult category. Gallant, who set a record this season for the most wins at the junior nationals, won the Junior Male category, while Fullerton won the Junior Female honours. The O’Rourke and Gallant teams are from the Charlottetown Curling Club, while Fullerton is from Cornwall.

Other winners were Rod MacDonald, skip of both the Provincial Men’s and Senior Men’s championship teams, who won the Adult Male honours, Matthew MacLean from the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary, who won the age 15 and under Junior Male category, and Veronica Smith of Cornwall, who took the 15 and Under Junior Female award. Glen MacLean from the Maple Leaf,  who coached several winning teams in the junior age categories, won the coach of the year honours, while Cliff Poirier of Summerside won the Official of the Year category. Audrey Callaghan, a volunteer for many years at the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton, and on the PEI Curling Association Board of Directors, won for Volunteer of the Year, while a special recognition award was given to Marilyn Sutherland, long-time curling coach and Master Course Conductor for the PEICA.

Certificates were also given out to the sponsors of the provincial curling championships, in recognition for their continued support for PEI curling. The PEICA’s Annual General Meeting was held in advance of the awards ceremony, with the current slate of officers returning for another curling season. There will be a new Executive Director next year, with Stephen Marchbank leaving to concentrate solely on basketball, and Amy Duncan taking over the PEICA Executive Director reins.

AGM Highlights

May 7th, 2010 admin No comments

Here are some highlights from tonight’s Annual General Meeting. Draft minutes will follow at a later date.

Hank Kamphuis, Cindy Nicholson,  Cyndi Russell, Colleen Solterman are leaving the Board of Directors, either completing their three year term, or leaving for other reasons. Four new board members were acclaimed:  Bob Fowler, Lorianne Davies, and Sherry Boutelier for a three year term, and Arleen Harris for a two year period (she had already filled in for much of this season).

Bylaw change approved to have icemaker report to manager was approved.

Rodd Greco team entry bonspiel to be replaced by new Senior Mixed event, replacing PEI Senior Mixed, which the PEICA is no longer interested in hosting.

Bonspiels all profitable this year.

Club had many provincial championship and runner-up teams this year.

Acquisitions included end zone cameras for ice house, along with monitors, an automated defibrilator (AED), timing tables (built by Bob MacWilliams) .

Two new advertising signs purchased – Century 21 (Mike Lafontaine) and Traction truck parts (Gord Peters).

Juniors program in transition year. Successful with help from Greg Groves, Geri-Lynn Ramsay, Ann Worth.

Seniors continues to be successful. $1600 in bank for future projects.

President De Luca reported a very successful year. Next year will be exciting too, with co-hosting of national The Dominion Club Curling Championship. Lots of volunteers needed.

Finances similar to last year. Memberships constant but other costs are rising.

Club renovations: plans reviewed, 11 changes recommended by Club committee. No start date yet. Town not planning to replace ice plant – just the failed condenser. Club will be new construction all on one level, at the other end of the ice house (by the pool), with stadium-style seating for viewing the ice.

PEICA President Shirley Lank reported that a new three year rotation for events is being proposed when current rotation expires after next season. A proposal is being brought up at the PEICA AGM to grow the Scotties by introducing a “Future Scotties” event at same dates and same club for female curlers who have not participated in Scotties in last five years. Eight teams. Also looking at having the Scotties at one club for the three years of the rotation in an effort to promote it fully and increase numbers. PEICA AGM is May 27 at the Charlottetown Curling Club.

Scholarships and Capital Improvement grants available from Curl Atlantic. Application deadline is May 30.

National Scotties profits to be divided among all seven clubs and PEICA.

Sarah Fullerton and Whitney Young from the PEI Junior Women’s Championship team presented the Club with a team picture as a token of their appreciation for all the help the Club has provided to them over the years.

Thanks to everyone for helping out club member Paul Horne!

May 7th, 2010 admin No comments

Reports are that over $19,000 was raised at last Friday’s fundraiser for Club member Paul Horne, held at the North Shore Community Centre. with a huge crowd, including a large number of Cornwall Curling Club members, in attendance. Paul suffered a cardiac attack on the ice at the Club on January 18th, and has required home renovations, and will need ongoing occupational therapy and trips off-Island during the long rehabilitation process. As a result of this incident, with the help of sponsors including Cornwall Physiotherapy, the Senior curlers, and the family of one of our club founders, the late Rodney Walsh, the Club has acquired an automated defibrillator (AED), and put on CPR and AED  training for over 20 Club members and staff.

If you missed the benefit, but would still like to help out, Paul’s mailing address is Winsloe RR#9, C1E 1Z2.

From our archives, here’s a picture of Paul when he played third on the Peter Buchanan rink, who scored an eight-ender back in October 2008:

Pictured left to right are Peter Buchanan (skip), Neil Smith (lead), Gordon Canfield (second), and Paul Horne (third).

Curl Atlantic Scholarship application deadline is May 30

May 7th, 2010 admin No comments

Curl Atlantic has implemented a scholarship to curlers who have enrolled full time in a post secondary institution. The intention of these awards is to allow talented athletes to devote primary sources of time and energy to training, rather than extensive employment in order to fund post-secondary education. Recipients will be expected to devote a full-time, shared commitment to sport and education exclusively. This award is not intended to reward past achievements but rather a means to pursue further achievements that surpass the current level of performance. Priority will be given to athletes attending Atlantic universities, colleges or vocational schools.

Please complete the following application and forward to the Executive Director of Curl Atlantic, Leslie Anne Walsh (curlatlantic2001@gmail.com), by May 30th, 2010.  Along with your application please include a copy of your university or high school transcript and one other letter of reference other than your coach.  Disbursement of funds to the successful applicants should occur on October 1, 2010, upon receipt of enrolment confirmation.
