Marie Christianson and Chris MacRae rinks win 2008 Cornwall Junior Spiel
November 23, 2008-A two-hour storm delay on Saturday caused scheduling problems for some of the teams at the annual Pizza Delight/Subway/Howard Johnson Dutch Inn Junior Cashspiel at the Cornwall Curling Club, causing the forfeiture of the junior women’s final and consolation final, which took place later on Sunday afternoon than originally scheduled. The reigning Nova Scotia junior champions, the Marie Christianson rink from Halifax, won the championship round by default over former New Brunswick champion Mary Jane McGuire of Fredericton, while Cornwall’s Sarah Fullerton rink took the consolation round, beating defending champion Erin Carmody, who curls out of Charlottetown, also by default.
In the junior men’s final, Chris MacRae defeated Halifax Mayflower clubmate Kendal Thompson 8-6, while PEI’s Sam Ramsay beat defending champion Brett Gallant of Charlottetown 8-6 in the consolation match.
In the junior women’s semi-finals, McGuire edged Carmody 5-4, and Christianson got by Sarah Fullerton by a 6-5 score. The junior men’s semis were also very close, with MacRae edging Gallant 7-6, and Thompson beating Ramsay 5-3.
Other members of the winning Marie Christianson team are Tania Hilliard, Jane Snyder, and Kaitlin Fralic, while Megan McGuire, Sarah Berthelot and Jocelyn Adams round out the runner-up McGuire rink.
Playing with consolation winner Sarah Fullerton were Michelle McQuaid, Whitney Young and Sara MacRae, while Geri-Lynn Ramsay, Darcy Birch and Jessica VanOuwerkerk round out the consolation runner-up Carmody foursome.
Travis Stone, Chris Baltzer, and Ben Mayhew complete the winning Chris MacRae rink, while runner-up Kendall Thompson’s teammates are Adam Berry, Mitch Cahill, Stuart Thomson and 5th Matt Dumaresque.
Completing the consolation-winning Sam Ramsay team are Justin Richard, Eric Pidgeon, and Corey Miller, while Adam Casey, Anson Carmody, and Jamie Danbrook are the other members of the Brett Gallant rink, runners-up in the consolation round.
Ten junior men’s teams and an equal number of junior women’s rinks took part in this annual event.
2007 Results
Provincial Junior champions Erin Carmody of the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club, and Brett Gallant of the Charlottetown Curling Club are this years winners of the Pizza Delight/Subway/Howard Johnson Junior Cashspiel, which wrapped up this afternoon at the Cornwall Curling Club. Carmody's game was an exciting come-from-behind battle, trailing Jessica Daigle of Saint John 5-1 after three ends. Carmody tied it up with a triple in the sixth, and stole a single in an extra end to pull out a 7-6 win.
Gallant lead 4-1 after four ends over Nova Scotia junior champion Dominic Daemon, who closed the gap to one with a double in the fifth. Gallant responded with a triple in the sixth end, and after Daemon picked up a single in the seventh, the Gallant rink picked up a 7-4 win.
Other members of the Carmody rink are Geri-Lynn Ramsay, Lisa Moerike, and Jessica van Ouwerkerk, with coach Pat Aylward. Rounding out the Gallant foursome are Adam Casey, Anson Carmody, and Alex MacFadyen, with Kathie Gallant coaching.
Gallant beat Anton Stefani of New Brunswick in the quarter-finals 7-2, and Charlottetown clubmate Tim Cullen 8-2 in the semi-finals, while Carmody had a quarter-final bye by virtue of her round robin finish, and edged out Tanya Hilliard of CFB-Halifax 4-3 in the semis.
In the other semi-final games, Daemon beat Summerside's Sam Ramsay rink 5-3, aided by a steal of three in the fifth end, while Daigle beat New Brunswick junior champ Mary Jane McGuire by an 8-2 score. 12 junior men's and 12 junior women's teams began play on Friday in this annual junior cashspiel.

New Brunswick rinks win Pizza Delight/Subway/Howard Johnson Junior Spiel
The Stephen Burgess and Jaclyn Crandall rinks from the Capital Winter Club in Fredericton NB were the winners of this afternoon's finals at the annual Pizza Delight/Subway/Howard Johnson Junior Cashspiel at the Cornwall Curling Club. Burgess defeated Quebec Canada Games representative Harrison Pollock, while Crandall beat Darcee Birch of the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside. Scores are not recorded in this event. In semi-final action this morning in the Junior Women's section, Birch defeated Silver Fox clubmate Anita Casey to advance to the final game against Crandall, who defeated her clubmate Valerie Hamende in the other semi-final, In the Junior Men's section, Burgess beat Mitchell O'Shea of Charlottetown in one semi to advance to the championship game against Pollock, who defeated Kory Hardiman of Halifax in the other semifinal game. In round-robin play, O'Shea finished at 4-0 in his pool, with Pollock was 3-1. David Nabuurs of Montague was an even 2-2, while Andrew Coe of Nova Scotia was 1-3, and Jonah MacDonald from Charlottetown went 0-4. In the other junior men's pool, Hardiman lead at 4-0, Burgess was 3-1, PEI's Brett Gallant was third at 2-2, followed by his Silver Fox clubmate Sam Ramsay at 1-3, and Matthew Nabuurs at 0-4. In one Junior Women's pool, Crandall and Casey were 3-1, while Ashley Howard of Moncton and Erin Carmody from Summerside went 2-2. Sarah Clow from the host Cornwall club went 0-4. In the other pool, Hamende was a perfect 4-0, while Birch and Charlottetown's Lynn Ann James were 2-2. Cornwall's Sarah Fullerton and Julie DeLuca of Moncton were 1-3.
2005 Results
Dominic Daemon of the Highlander Curling Club in Antigonish, NS defeated Jamie Christianson of CFB Halifax to win the men's section of the Pizza Delight -Subway-Howard Johnson Junior Men's Cashspiel. Marie Christianson of CFB Halifax, defeated last year's women's champions Meaghan Hughes Rink out of Charlotttown.
2004 Results
The Pizza Delight/Subway/Howard Johnson Junior Men's and Women's Cashspiel wrapped up Sunday afternoon Nov. 28 at the
Cornwall Curling Club. The rink of Steven Howard, Tyler MacKenzie, Peter Girvan and Jeremy Cameron from the host club defeated New Brunswick's Marcel Robichaud rink 7-2 to win the junior men's final. In the junior women's section, PEI junior champion Meaghan Hughes, with her team of Kendra Cameron, Sinead Dolan and Michala Robison edged New Brunswick junior champ Andrea Kelley of Fredericton 7-6 in the final. The Hughes rink, who curl out of both the Charlottetown and Cornwall curling clubs, defeated another Island rink, defending champion Vanessa Aylward of the
Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club, to advance to the championship game.
All four rinks in the finals went through round robin play undefeated. 15 Junior Men's and 12 Junior Women's rinks from across the Maritimes took part in the three-day cashspiel.
2003 Results
The rink of Vanessa Aylward, Erin Carmody, Michele Mackie, and Geri-Lynn Ramsay from the host Cornwall Curling Club defeated the Andrea Kelly rink from Perth-Andover New Brunswick to win the junior women's portion of the Bass River/Howard Johnson Eastern Canadian Junior Cashspiel.
The Aylward rink defeated PEI's Meaghan Hughes rink to advance to the semi-final round, while Cornwall's Kendra Cameron rink defeated New Brunswick's Cindy Samaan and Shannon Williams rinks to advance to the semifinal against Aylward. The other junior women's semi-final saw Andrea Kelley, from Perth-Andover NB defeat Williams, from Sackville NB. In the Junior Men's section, the rink of Mark Waugh, Dennis Watts, Daniel Richard, and Jeremy Cameron, who curl out of the nearby Crapaud Community Curling Club, defeated New Brunswick's Tom Girvan in the final. In the Junior men's semi-final games, New Brunswick's Ryan Sherrard rink lost to the Waugh rink, while Tom Girvan defeated another New Brunswick rink, Ryan Sherrard, to advance to the final. Dominic Daemen defeated David Alcorn in the junior men's consolation final. Both rinks are from New Brunswick.
Ten junior men's, and eight junior women's rinks from NS, NB, and PEI competed in this annual cashspiel.
2002 Results
The rink of Andy McCann, Tom Girvan, Stephen Howard, and Peter Girvan, from the Gladstone Curling Club in Fredericton Junction defeated the Marcel Robichaud rink of the Beausejour club in Moncton to win the junior men's section in the Bass River/Howard Johnson Eastern Canadian Cashspiel in a Sunday afternoon final at the Cornwall Curling Club. McCann defeated PEI's Lincoln Peters of the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in one semi-final match, while Robichaud downed former Islander Aaron Tschirhart, now playing out of the Riverside Curling Club in Rothesay.
The Becky Atkinson/Laurel Green rink from the Riverside club repeated as junior women's winners, defeating the Kendra Cameron rink from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in the final. Atkinson defeated Charlottetown's Meaghan Hughes, while Cameron topped Mary Jane McGuire of Perth Andover NB in the semi-finals. Andrea Kelley of Perth Andover defeated Montague's Erika Nabuurs rink to take the consolation section.
Thirteen junior men's and six junior women's teams were entered in the annual cashspiel.
2001 Results
The Jamie Murphy and Laurel Green rinks from the Riverside Curling Club in Rothesay New Brunswick were the big winners at the 2001 Bass River Chairs/Howard Johnson Eastern Canadian Junior Cash Spiel. Green picked up $400 by defeating Andrea Kelley of Perth-Andover New Brunswick in the Women's final, while New Brunswick champion Murphy, who defeated Quebec champion Eric Halle of Amqui Quebec, took home $600.
