Bankers edge out Mariners in inaugural Dream Team competition
Posted Thursday, November 13, 2008 by derekm
The exciting competition which took place on Thursday morning on sheet 2 got off to a bad start for the Mariners when two of their crew couldn't find their brushes. They quickly made up for it in the first end by scoring three. The Bankers pirated the next three ends to even the score but the Mariners came back with two in the fifth. Mariners spilled a couple of rocks overboard and the Bankers took advantage by scoring three in the sixth. In the seventh, the Mariners tried to spill the rocks overboard again for a clean deck but were forced to take one. All tied up for a dramatic ending, the Mariners had a rock well-hidden behind cover for a steal but the Bankers' skip made a routine double raise wick to edge out the Mariners.
Spectators were given a good show for their money and good fun was had by all.
The Mariners team was made up of Winston Taylor, Don Graham, Roy Coffin and John De Luca. The Bankers team included Carol Sweetapple, Greg Groves, Shirley Berry who reinforced the Bankers by sparing for Jim Farquharson, and Roddie MacLean.
Who will now challenge the Bankers? Will it be a group from DVA, or the Oddballs who will form a new group. The Leftovers haven't spoken nor have the silent Teachers group. And now we hear there may be a group from the Airforce.
Stay tuned!

Club member releases seventh sketch book
Posted Saturday, October 4, 2008 by derekm
Note: Sterling Stratton is a Cornwall Curling Club member, and half of PEI's two-time Stick Curling championship team.
(from today's Guardian)
Learning from P.E.I.'s historic buildings
If Buildings Could Talk . . . What Would They Say? Book One - Eastern P.E.I. is a new book by Island sketch artist Sterling Stratton
By Dave Stewart,
Charlottetown pen and ink sketch artist Sterling Stratton has published a book for adults and students who may be somewhat reluctant to spend time reading about Island history.
Armed with his usual passion for history and the province, he created 24 stories about specific places of historic interest.
He has just published his seventh book of sketches - If Buildings Could Talk . . . What Would They Say? Book One - Eastern P.E.I. It is similar to Readers' Digest in that the articles are quite brief and independent from one another.
It is, perhaps, the most detailed book of illustrations he has produced.
Stratton says the educational goal of the book is to provide readers with the opportunity to gain and retain an understanding of Island history by exploring historic sites. And, he does so in a series of stories that don't involve sitting down for hours on end.
It was written for adults and students who are somewhat reluctant to spend time reading about Island history. For people not up on reading at all, there are breakout boxes with small anecdotes and, of course, sketches of everything he talks about.
And, Stratton has includes excerpts from newspapers with each story, showing what was making the news at the time these historic places on P.E.I. were built.
"Some students have difficulty grasping historical concepts and making a connection with past events. This program involves strategies to counter that tendency," Stratton says.
Rather than basing the study of history on a chronological order of events, a survey of thematic units or the accomplishments of selected personalities, If Buildings Could Talk provides learning activities relating to standing historic buildings in the province.
The book has already been embraced by the Department of Education. It's in every school library. Holland College's adult education program has two class sets.
The author certainly knows a thing or two about curriculum. Stratton retired from the educational system in 1993, having held positions as teacher, principal, guidance counsellor, curriculum consultant and superintendent.
There are quite a few interesting facts revealed in his book. Take the story around the McNichol-Best house, built in 1919 in Cardigan. It was home, at one time, to Dr. Charles Best, one half of the Banting and Best team that discovered insulin.
Stratton can be reached by e-mail at sterlingstratton@eastlink.ca or 566-4382.

Note that other clubs may not extend all the same privileges to their one or two draw members.

Putting contest decides 2008 Countryview Golf Tourney
Posted Saturday, June 14, 2008 by derekm
It was a cool, windy and drizzly day, but the real rain stayed away for the 2008 Cornwall Curling Club golf tournament at beautiful Countryview Golf Course. There were a few no-shows due to the weather, so organizer Bob Fowler divided the event into two divisions - one for three member teams, and one for four-person teams.
While the final teams were on the course, the teams from the earlier rounds discussed their play back at the clubhouse.

Photo: Warm and dry
Outside, Karen Currie (missing from photo while she went to the kitchen for more burgers), Ray Biagé, and Valerie Acorn cooked up a delicious burger, hot dog, salad and brownies meal to feed the hungry multitudes.

On the course, the last two teams were wrapping up:

Photo: Job done!

Photo: No birdie for Bob!

Photo: Good game!
Oh no! Looks like we've got a tie between the four-member Kentucky Fried Chickens, and a three-member team, anchored by course-owner Carl Currie.
Bob decides to engage the two teams in a putting contest. A four-hole course is mapped out on the practice green, and the two teams play off for the coveted trophy.
Rick and Tracy from the Chickens think they have it aced, as they line up Tracy's shot:

Head Chicken Angus Davies also misses a close one to give the lead to the other team:

When it was all over, the hardware went to the three-person team of Marie MacDonald, Carl Currie, and Rupert Sweetapple.

The Kentucky Fried Chickens had to settle for second:

The prize for the team with the "most dedication" went to Chick Morrison, Greg St. John, and Daphne Crosby. Longest drive went to Gary Crosby (men) and Karen Currie (women) . Valerie Acorn took the honours for "closest to the line" (new event this year) on hole number one. Closest to the pin for the men was Donald Weeks, while no-one was able to hit the green to take the honours for the women.
Following the distribution of the main prizes, a large number of door prizes were drawn for.

Blue wins closing spiel
Posted Thursday, April 10, 2008 by derekm
Well, the curling year at the Cornwall Curling Club ended with a bang - Blue Rocks beat Red Rocks in the Countryview Golf Course Closing Spiel. The spiel began with Red ahead on Thursday night, but Blue pulled out all the stops on Friday night to take the lead, and they held on until the end. Friday night - what a party!. We were treated to fabulous food from the chefs at the Culinary Institute, and the music from Moovin' 'N Groovin' got everyone in the mood for a great flashback to the 50's and 60's. Many Thanks to Karen and Carl Currie for their continued support of the club, to the participants for joining us in the fun, to all members who volunteered their time in any way to help us out, to Lance for the great ice (as always), and to the bartenders for putting up with all of us. See you all next year!

Since it inception in 2000, the Cornwall Curling Club website has been hosted at Island Services Network, a local company owned by Cornwall's Kevin O'Brien. The company has recently been sold to Halifax-based Eastlink, and websites hosted at ISN will have to be moved to other web hosts. In the near future, the Cornwall site will be hosted at iWeb.com in Montreal. To help make the transition go smoother, those of you who were accessing the site through the web address www.isn.net/cornwallcurling are advised to use CornwallCurling.com instead. Thank you for your patience as we move to the new host.

Cornwall's Dick St. John co-winner of Special Olympics Coach of the Year
Posted Saturday, April 5, 2008 by derekm
Special Olympics PEI's awards nights were held recently in Summerside. Debbie Metcalfe and Dick St. John were named coaches of the year. Dick, who curls out of our club, and recently organized a regional Special Olympics curling event here, coaches the curling program in the Charlottetown and Cornwall areas and, at the awards presentation was described as a coach who "makes the program fun". The Charlottetown Fitness Centre was named "Facility of the Year". The Cornwall Curling Club had won this award two years ago.
Congratulations Dick!
Too close to call in Wed. Ladder League
Posted Friday, April 4, 2008 by derekm
The Murphy's Cornwall Pharmacy Ladder League wrapped up on Wednesday evening.
In final night play in the A pool, the Kelly Watts foursome doubled the Bob Fowler team 8-4, while the Karen Currie rink, skipped by Valerie Acorn, as Karen is on vacation, lost to the Gordon Matthews rink (Matthew's only win of the round). This gave Watts, Currie and Fowler 4-1 win-loss records. Currie did not play Fowler or Watts in the abbreviated final round, so we cannot look at records against each other to determine first place.
Looking at the scoreboard points, both Fowler and Watts had 37, and it would appear that Currie has more, as she has 30 points before looking at her game against Ray Biagé, and the scoreboard shows that Ray had 7 points (I can't make out the other score), so this would give the first place finish to the Currie rink by at least a point. Second place would go to Watts, who beat Fowler in their final-night encounter.
The B pool is even more complicated, with some teams having byes, and some not. We give a prize to the winner of the B pool in the final round.
The Hank Kamphuis rink had four wins out of five games, while the Guy Arsenault team had three wins out of four matches. Kamphuis and Arsenault did not play each other in the round. Neither recorded their score the last night, so we cannot really compare their scores. As we did last time, I tried eliminating one of Kamphuis's games at random, but that just gave both teams 3-1 records. SO, I am going to declare a tie, and give both teams the prize (I hope our budget permits it!)
Here are the prize winners for the season. You will note that, as happened last year, we have managed to avoid one team winning more than one prize!
Round One
A Pool Winner: Bob MacWilliams, Myrna Sanderson, Jim Farquharson, Ruth Stavert
A Pool runner-up: Ray Biage, Lorianne Davies, Gordon Canfield, Angus Davies
Round Two
A Pool winner: Bob Fowler, Tracy MacDonald, Gary Crosby, Daphne Crosby
A Pool runner-up: Terry MacCormac, Rick Milton, Tara Rose, Cindy MacCormac
Round Three:
A Pool winner: Karen Currie, Alan Acorn, Valerie Acorn, Tom Morrison
A Pool runner-up: Kelly Watts, Cathy Handren, Darren MacLean, Cindy Nicholson
B Pool Winners: Hank Kamphuis, Gord Peters, Vern Chowan, Pat MacInnis
and Guy Arsenault, Shawn Meyers, Heather Romain, Hayley Meyers (tie)
Thanks to everyone who participated in the league. Hope you had fun, and please come back next year!
- Derek MacEwen,
Wednesday evening drawmaster
