Suddenly, peacefully, surrounded by family, the death occurred of Valerie Taylor (nee MacMillan), Rice Point, on April 30, 2012 at Moncton Hospital.
She was the beloved wife and best friend of Captain Kirk Taylor, cherished mother of Karianne (Jim Morrison) and Sarah.
Born in O’Leary on January 27, 1957, she was the much loved daughter of Margaret (nee MacKenzie) and the late Albert MacMillan of West Cape. Her loving presence will also be dearly missed by her brothers and sisters: Blair, Iva Griffin, Ivan (Juliette Smith), Kevin (Priscilla), Nancy, Vance, Ian (Cathy), Leita (Leigh) Chisholm, and Chris (Betty) as well as parents-in-law Forbie and Bertha Taylor of Nine Mile Creek, brother-in-law Paul (Nancy) and sister-in-law Sheri (Troy) Bradley. Her numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins who she loved so much will also cherish her memory.
Valerie was predeceased by her father in 1978, her brother Dale in 1998, her brother-in-law Vincent Griffin in 1981 and sister in infancy in 1965.
Throughout Valerie’s life, she touched many people and became involved in many activities. In 1980, she joined Regis Duffy at DCL and was instrumental in helping the company grow into a leading multi-national company in the chemical industry. In her spare time, she spent many hours volunteering and cheering her family and friends at speed skating, hockey and softball events. Together with her best friend Kirk their love of physical activity led them to many hours of enjoyment actively engaged in golfing, any type of exercise class, curling, running and skiing. Her and Kirk’s love of the sea and travel led them to taking many cruises over the years throughout the world.
Resting at Belvedere Funeral Home for visitation Thursday 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Friday from Canoe Cove Presbyterian Church at 11:00 a.m. Interment in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Canadian Cancer Society or Queen Elizabeth Hospital Foundation.

The curlers had practiced on a different sheet than the one used for the finals, and found the ice much heavier than that which they had practiced on. The first three curlers’ rocks all fell short of the hog line, with the fourth curler, Roche, putting his stone short of the rings, but well inside the hog line, to win the event, and the prize of $1000 to the winning curler, and $10,000 for the winning club.

Roche told Cheryl Bernard on Global TV that his immediate plans for the money were to take the team to dinner, while Montague club manager Larry Richards told her that the club would use their portion to purchase a Jet Ice system.

As there is an extra round in our draw this year, we don’t have enough sponsorship to cover the A pool runner-up prize in the final round.

The Bob Fowler rink won the fourth and final round, sponsored by Clyde River Golf Course, of the A pool of the Wednesday Night Ladder League, winning all their games in the round. The Paul Neima rink were second, losing only to Bob’s team, by a 9-4 score on the final night. Both teams will receive prizes on May 11.

Three teams, skipped by Aaron Campbell, Ray Biagé, and Greg Groves, had three wins in the B pool, but Groves and Biagé had one more point, as the Campbell rink did not play one of their games. The Groves and Biagé rinks met on the last night, with Groves coming out on top of a very closely fought 9-8 battle, so they will win the round and the final prize.

It was also brought to my attention that I had the incorrect winner for round 3. I reported, incorrectly, that Karen Currie had beaten Gord Peters in their A pool encounter on Feb 8. I rechecked the result, and that was not the case – it was actually a 9-3 win for Peters, who will win the round (sorry Karen!), beating both second place teams, Currie and Bob MacWilliams, in their games.

Here is the complete winners list for the year (Team rosters as they were on the board. If they are not correct, let us know).

The winners of the A and B pools for each round, as well as the A pool runner-up in the final round, will receive prizes from our generous sponsors during our May 11 Annual General Meeting and Awards Night.

Round one, sponsored by Don Lowther Snow Removal, and Howard Johnson Dutch Inn.

A Pool winner: Paul Neima, Kevin Arsenault, Mike Lafontaine, Dwayne MacNeil

B Pool winner: Joerg Soltermann, Lew Black, Hans Wicki, Dan Delaney

Round two, sponsored by Murphy’s Cornwall Pharmacy

A Pool winner: Paul Neima, Kevin Arsenault, Mike Lafontaine, Dwayne MacNeil

B Pool winner: Bob MacWilliams, John Berry, Roy Coffin, Jim Farquharson

Round three, sponsored by Cornwall Pizza Delight

A Pool winner (corrected): Gordon Peters, Hank Kamphuis, Gerald Dykerman, Pat MacInnis

B Pool winner: Bob Fowler, Paul Durant, Jamie Ballem, Alan Acorn

Round four, sponsored by Clyde River Golf Links

A pool winner: Bob Fowler, Paul Durant, Jamie Ballem, Alan Acorn

A pool runner-up: Paul Neima, Kevin Arsenault, Mike Lafontaine, Dwayne MacNeil

B pool winner: Greg Groves, Winston Taylor, Donald Weeks, Frank Weiler

Thanks to everyone who participated in another great season of the Wednesday Evening Ladder League!

More than the ice was frozen over at the Cornwall Curling Club on Saturday, as the Leafs soundly defeated the Canadiens to win the coveted Stanley Cup, only the second time in eight months that the Cup was in Cornwall (click for previous Cup appearance), and the first time that the playoffs between these two Original Six teams were held at our Club, thanks to the assistance of our great sponsors Countryview Golf Course. Those of us who won the Friday night trivia know, of course, that the last time the Leafs beat the Habs for the Cup was 1967, so this was truly an historic occasion, as evidenced by the great joy shown by the winning team in the official photo:

;

As well, some of the players took the opportunity to hoist the cup in the air themselves:

The surprising victory by the Leafs became obvious by the third round of the playoffs, on Saturday morning, when the Leafs came from behind to tie two games, taking three in the last period to tie one, and a big five in the final frame to tie another. The carnage against the Habs continued for the rest of the day, with the Leafs taking 300 points, and the Habs only 189 over the two day playoff series.

As well as the on-ice activities, both teams participated in off-ice hockey/golf themed sports, including hitting a puck into a golf hole with a putter, putting a golf ball into the hole using a hockey stick, and using a mini-stick to hit a target with a poker chip. Both teams appeared to be very experienced in the sport of golf, and the off-ice activities resulted in a dead heat.

The awards night was held following the final games, with Bob Fowler filling in for Ron MacLean, who apparently had something else to do. All the Leafs got fabulous prizes, and sponsor Countryview even had a prize for each of the Habs!

Additional awards included a one-night “season pass” to the Cornwall Curling Club, won by former Hab fan Ray Biagé, who was seen wearing Leafs colours all weekend, and a big Panasonic LCD TV, won by Julie Mitchell (bartender Carol Sweetapple’s daughter, who lives in Halifax). There were also prizes throughout the day during the reverse draw for the pass, and door prizes after the main awards were given out.

The lavish awards dinner was catered by student chefs from the Culinary Institute of Canada, and included barbecued pork, baked potatoes, salad, coleslaw, rolls, and Two Bite Brownies for dessert.

Thanks to the event organizers, including Rob and his new bride, Sherri, Karen, Carl, and Kris from our great sponsors Countryview Golf, trivia master Angus, MC Bob, anthem singer Debby, off-ice games coordinators including Jamie, the kitchen and cleanup crews, the Culinary cooks, the sixteen teams who took part, Manager Bev, bartenders Carol and Al, icemaker Lance, ice crew including Jeff, and everyone else who helped make our Leafs vs Habs closing bonspiel at great success!

The Cornwall Curling Club season wraps up with the Juniors pizza and skating party on Sunday, our Annual General Meeting and Awards night, May 11 at the Club beginning at 6 pm, and our annual golf tourney, June 9 at Countryview (now open for the season – book your tee-times at CountryviewGolf.com). Contact Carl or Karen at Countryview to sign up for the golf tourney. And curling is not over yet – don’t forget, the world’s best curlers are in Summerside starting Tuesday night for the Players’ Championship – don’t miss it!
