Smith picks up opening draw win, while Cornwall’s Ferguson loses to Manitoba, with Cornwall’s Lenentine, at Canadian Juniors

PEI’s Tyler Smith junior men’s team from the Montague Curling Rink picked up a 5-4 win over Manitoba #1, skipped by Brett Walter, in the opening draw of the New Holland Canadian Juniors, today in Langley BC while the Lauren Ferguson junior women’s foursome from here at the Cornwall Curling Club lost their opener 10-4 in eight ends to the Mackenzie Zacharias squad from Manitoba, which includes Cornwall member Lauren Lenentine at lead. Lenentine previously skipped her Cornwall team which included current Ferguson team members Kristie Rogers and Rachel O’Connor to two PEI Junior titles.

Team Smith

Smith has won five provincial junior titles, four for PEI, and one playing third for Team New Brunswick, skipped by Liam Marin. Smith will play against Marin at 11:30 PEI time this evening in New Brunswick’s first match of the event, and will take on Quebec in his lone Sunday game at 11 pm Atlantic.

Team Ferguson

Lauren Lenentine

Ferguson, playing in her second national junior championship, has a pair of games on Sunday, against Quebec at 1 pm AT and Nova Scotia at 6.

Fourteen men’s and 14 women’s teams are competing for Canadian titles, separated into two seven-team pools per gender for the initial round-robin, followed by a Championship Round (top four in each pool) leading to the playoffs. The top team advances to its respective final on Sunday, Jan. 26, while the second- and third-place teams meet in a semifinal on Saturday, Jan. 25, to determine the other finalist.

Selected round-robin games (Sheet D) from the New Holland Canadian Junior Championships will be streamed live at Curling Canada’s YouTube page, which you can access by CLICKING HERE.

TSN/RDS2 will carry complete live coverage of the semifinals (women at 11 a.m. [all times PT], men at 4 p.m.) on Jan. 25 and finals (women at 9 a.m., men at 2 p.m.).

The winning teams will then represent Canada at the World Juniors in Russia.
