Cornwall Curling Club to be “rebranded” in honour of World Champion Lauren Lenentine!

The Town of Cornwall and the Cornwall Curling Club held a special presentation on Friday, in which Club Member and World Junior Champion Lauren Lenentine was honoured by having the Club, housed in the Town-owned Cornwall Civic Centre, rebranded as “The Cornwall Curling Club, Home of World Champion Lauren Lenentine”, with a sign to be erected outside the curling club entrance.

This honour was kept as a surprise to Lauren and the Lenentine family until a letter to her, signed by Town of Cornwall Mayor Minerva McCourt and Cornwall Curling Club President Chris McDougall, was read by the Mayor at the presentation. In her remarks Mayor McCourt also noted how much pride the community has in Lauren and said that she is sure that Lauren’s accomplishments will not only inspire many more young PEI curlers, but also act as an inspiration to all those who set goals and follow their dreams.

In attendance at the presentation today was (L-R in photo):
Ann Lenentine (Lauren’s grandmother), Robbie and Jennifer Lenentine (Lauren’s parents), Town of Cornwall Mayor Minerva McCourt, Hazen Lenentine (Lauren’s grandfather), Cornwall Curling Club Vice-President Peter Murdoch (back), who acted as Master of Ceremonies for the event, and Cornwall Club President Chris MacDougall (front).

Also in attendance was Tracey MacLean, Town of Cornwall Engagement Coordinator.

Jennifer Lenentine spoke and noted at length the family history (her late parents Jim and Carolyn Molyneaux were members of the Club years ago and good friends with Roy Coffin and other Club founders), and the fact that she also attended many events over the years at the Civic Centre, including her wedding shower! Jennifer talked about witnessing the hard work and the sacrifices that Lauren has made to work towards her dreams, of how proud they are of her, and how appreciative they are of the support of their curling community. Jennifer noted that Lauren had a very early and lifelong passion and love for the game.

Robbie Lenentine thanked the Town of Cornwall and the Club members and executive for their support of the game and of Lauren and Ella and Junior Curling. Hazen Lenentine (Lauren’s Grandfather)  noted his pride in Lauren, not only for her athletic accomplishments but also her disposition as a person and role as a community member. Hazen also noted his great pride for Ella, Lauren’s sister, as well…and  her dedication and love of the game.

Peter Murdoch acted as Master of Ceremonies and thanked everyone for attending.

Chris MacDougall spoke on behalf of the Club’s Board of Directors and membership, saying that Lauren was an inspiration to himself, the Club, Town, and many young persons to go after their dreams and achieve success.

He highlighted some of her many achievements, including her World Junior Championships, both for Manitoba and previously as an alternate for Nova Scotia, her Canadian Junior championships for Manitoba and Nova Scotia, and her provincial titles for PEI, NS, and Manitoba, as well as the fact that this year she participated in the Scotties Tournament of Hearts Canadian Women’s Championship.

He noted that on PEI she has been a KidSport Ambassador, and a multiple Sport PEI awards winner, including the coveted Lieutenant Governor’s Award.

Lauren thanked everyone, saying she was very honoured to be recognized by the Town and the Club, and very proud of her history with the Cornwall Curling Club.

The event concluded with a reception of coffee, and snacks donated by a Club family, including pastries from Mary’s Cornwall Bakery, and fruit from Cornwall’s Your Independent Grocery.
