Club founder Gordie Hermann passes away

We are sad to learn that Gordie Hermann passed away around 1 this morning. Without Gordie, there likely would have been no Cornwall Curling Club.  Let’s wind the clock back to 1979, where the Cornwall Village Council became interested in developing community recreation facilities. Gordie Hermann was the council member in charge of special community projects at that time. A survey was conducted with a skating rink, a swimming pool and a curling rink being the most popular items selected as being needed. Discussions were held with the Provincial Government, it was felt there were lots of skating rinks and that the capital and operating expenses of a pool would not make it a viable operation. After the decision was made, Gordie sat on the committee that met weekly to plan and implement the project, and then moved on to sit on the charter Board of Directors for the Club. All Directors made a personal guarantee of $1000.

Gordie was Club president during our 1983-84 and 1988-89 seasons, and spoke at our 20th anniversary celebrations in the 2001-2002 season.

Gordie had heart surgery in June 2012, but recovered, and continued to curl at the Club until very recently, winning a medal in 65+ Mixed Curling at the 55+ games in February 2013. It’s a little-known fact that Gordie has also curled at the Brier, when he curled at the Crapaud Curling Club on the Ted MacFadyen rink, back in 1980.
