Berry team win annual Club golf tourney
It was a perfect day for the Cornwall Curling Club’s annual nine hole, best ball golf tournament today at Countryview Golf Club. The teams played a standard “scramble” format, except that the 9th hole had to be played with nine-irons only, except for the green, where a provided curling broom had to be used. Greg Groves managed to sink the putt on the first shot.
Greg Groves and Paul Durant celebrating Greg’s putt. Paul doesn’t look too disappointed that he didn’t get to try!
Back in the Clubhouse, after a meal of burgers and fries, the scores were tallied, with the foursome of (L-R) John and Shirley Berry, Donald Weeks, and Kimball Blanchard coming in first by a single stroke, and getting first pick of the prize table.
Next up were the closest to the pin and long drive awards.
Jean Anderson won the ladies closest to the pin (hole 2)
Brent Irving won the men’s longest drive, for hole 4
Shirley Berry won the women’s, for hole 7.
Paul Durant won the men’s closest to the pin (hole 8)
Now, back to the team prizes. There was a tied score for second place, between the Brent Irving and Greg Groves teams, with the Groves threesome, which also included Paul Durant and Derek MacEwen, winning after retrogression rules were applied.
Team Irving (L-R): George Younker, Brent Irving, Angela Sanderson, Rob Gallant
Other teams in order were the Gary O’Sullivan foursome, followed by the Chris MacDougall team, then the Bill Hope squad, and the “Most Honest” team, the Cornwall women’s club champions from last season, captained by Kim Nicholson.
Thanks to organizer Gary O’Sullivan, the prize sponsors, and the Countryview Golf Club for another great event!

Gord Peters team wins 2014 Club golf tourney
The weather could only be described as “variable”, with everything from sunshine, to rain, to north winds, to dark clouds, and even a little sleet, but the rain mostly held off and, although it was quite cold for the first day of summer, the Cornwall Curling Club’s annual golf tourney at Countryview Golf Club went off without a hitch.
The big hit of the day was Countryview’s beautiful new clubhouse (we’ll see more of it later):
We got our scorecards and event rules (9 hole scramble, with special rule on number 9 – use 9 irons only until green) and headed out onto the course.
Here’s Jim Orr hitting a long drive, straight as an arrow down the fairway (sure looks like a contender for the men’s long drive prize!):
On the way by, we took a peek at the new powercart garage, put up this week (there’s a couple more big doors, not in the picture)
After we completed our nine holes, everyone headed back to the clubhouse for a drink or two, and a burger and sausage on a bun.
Most stayed inside, but a few hardy soles braved the outdoor deck.
Everyone listened intently as Bob Fowler and Rick Doiron got ready to announce the winners. Bob started out by thanking everyone for attending, Countryview for hosting, and the many sponsors for donating prizes, including: Countyview Golf , Clyde River Golf, Rustico Resort Golf, Prebilt Steel, Traction Heavy Duty Parts, Island Storm basketball team, Kenmac Energy, Eastern Auto Supply, KFC, the Cornwall Curling Club, and YoungCo Manufacturing.
By the way, the new clubhouse is nice and bright, but the sun came out at the wrong time, so the pictures of the winners have too much light in places.
The men’s Closest to the Pin winner was Paul Durant:
The men’s Long Drive honours did, as predicted, go to Jim Orr:
The women’s Long Drive prize went to Krista Affleck:
As was the case last year, no female player was able to hit the green for the Closest to the Pin contest, so a draw was made, with Tracy MacDonald taking home the prize.
The prize for most “Honest” golfers went to the team of Tom Dunn, Val MacLean, and Lee Nickerson, who had a quite respectable score of 40.
Finally it was time to announce the winning team, who had a score of 33, four strokes ahead of the second place team (Len Gotell). The winners were the three person team of Gordon Peters, Dan Hughes, and Karen Fisher.
Photo (L-R): Dan Hughes Karen Fisher, Gordon Peters
The day wrapped up with drawing for the remaining prizes on the prize table. As usual, very few went home empty-handed.
Thanks to all the organizers, sponsors, Countryview management and staff, and participants for another great event.
On the way out, I snapped a few pictures of the decks and the amazing locker room downstairs, which features huge 32? lockers, and an automatically opening door to get your stuff outside, and a card access entry with 24/7 access to get your gear and pullcart back in (BTW, Danny Young and YoungCo made the fancy fasteners on the locker doors).
If you missed the tourney and would like to take a look at Countryview’s new digs, they’re having an open house, in honour of 15 years of business, on Wednesday June 25th from 6 – 9 pm, with free munchies, live entertainment, and special drink and green fee prices!
Great weather, great times at 2013 Club golf tourney
The weather couldn’t have been better for this year’s Club golf tournament at beautiful Countryview Golf Club with sunny skies, light winds, and temperatures in the mid-20?s. Approximately 60 golfers hit the links at 10 am in our first-ever “shotgun” start (although it sounded more like a horn to me!).
Here’s the Bill Hope rink foursome finishing play on the 9th hole. A “best ball” format was used for the other holes, but this one had special rules – only a 9 iron could be used until the green, with players alternating shots.
Meanwhile, on the clubhouse deck, Valerie Acorn was cooking up delicious burgers and hot dogs on the ‘cue, and Karen Currie from Countryview was cutting up the dessert.
After the meal, organizers Bob Fowler and Rick Doiron filled the table with great prizes, courtesy of the many event sponsors, including Countryview, KFC, Prebilt Steel, Traction Heavy Duty Parts, and Eastern Auto Supply, and started to hand out the prizes.
They didn’t have to go too far to hand out the first prize, as the men’s Longest Drive honours went to “Boston” Rick!
Gord Peters won the men’s Closest to the Pin honours:
Lisa Arsenault won the women’s Longest Drive, while no woman managed to hit the green and capture the Closest to the Pin prize, so a draw was made, and Sue Doiron (who actually put her shot in the water) was awarded the prize.
Photo: Sue Doiron
Remember the 9 iron 9th hole that we talked about earlier? Well, Rick’s team somehow managed to par it, and got a special prize:
Photo (L-R): Helen Smith, Tracy MacDonald, Sue Doiron, Rick Doiron
Only one prize remained, for the winning team. This year’s winners, with a score of 35, were the foursome of Carl Currie, Valerie Acorn, Carlene Peters, and Ankur Deshpande.
Photo: Ankur Deshpande, Valerie Acorn, Carl Currie, organizer Bob Fowler. Missing from photo: Carlene Peters
Following the awards to the winners, the rest of the prizes were drawn for, with very few people going home empty handed! Bob, who has been organizing the event for many years, thanked everybody for attending, and extended an invitation to anyone who would like to run it next year. He thanked the Curries and Countryview for again hosting the event, thanked the sponsors, and everyone who helped out, and hoped to see everyone back on the ice at the curling club in mid-October. Incoming curling club president Paul Neima thanked Bob and the organizers for another great event! Have a great summer everyone!

2013 Tournament Draw (revised)
The current forecast for Saturday June 22 is sunny and 21 degrees, so things are shaping up perfectly for our annual 9-hole, best ball tourney at beautiful Countryview Golf Course, route 19 in Fairview.
There have been some draw changes, so please take note of this revised version. Please note: for the first time, we are using a “shotgun start”, with all foursomes teeing off at 10 am. All golfers are requested to be at Countryview by 9:30 to ensure time to make your way to your respective tee boxes.
We remind you again that, should you require a power card, call Countryview now and reserve, as there is another tournament that day and there could be a shortage.
There will be a longest drive for men and women, plus a closest to the pin for men and women. Last year we had the ninth hole that players could only use a 7 iron, this year we are going to draw for which hole that will happen and what iron will be used. All the holes from 1 to 9 and irons from 5 to 9 will be put in a hat and drawn out before we tee off to see which iron will be used and what hole it will be used on.
There will be a BBQ after with hot dogs, hamburgers and dessert, plus lots of prizes!

Gord Peters foursome wins rain-soaked 2012 Club golf tourney
The forecast called for 60% possibility of showers, but by noon, it was apparent that the showers had turned into full-fledged rain, as around 50 Cornwall Curling Club members and friends made their way around the front nine of the Countryview Golf Course for their annual 9-hole, best ball, golf tournament. Those lucky enough to get an early tee-time emerged a little dryer than those who drew a later start, such as the Danny Kneabone foursome, pictured here heading to the 9th green:
Meanwhile back at the clubhouse, Golf course owner Carl Currie, under cover of the deck roof, was cooking up burgers and hot dogs for the hungry masses, closely supervised by his son Kris, along with Bob MacWilliams and Paul Neima.
Others stayed warm and dry inside the clubhouse:
Still others braved the covered part of the outdoor deck, and enjoyed a new Beach Chair Lager or two:
Finally, everyone arrived back at the clubhouse, finished their burgers, dogs, and cake, and the crowds assembled for the prize presentations:
Organizers Karen Currie from Countryview, and Bob Fowler, got ready to hand out a huge table-full of prizes, from generous sponsors including Countryview, Kenmac Energy, Traction Heavy Duty Parts, Prebilt Steel, and KFC.
This year’s winners were the Gord Peters foursome, which included Dan Hughes (Elaine’s husband), Lynda Turnbull, and Derek MacEwen.
Photo (L-R): Peters, MacEwen, Turnbull, Hughes
There was a new wrinkle in the best ball format this year, on the 9th hole, where playing order was chosen at random, with each player in turn hitting the same ball to the green using a seven iron, and then using a putter on the green. Some teams pulled it off in six or so, but one team, playing in heavy rain, as we saw pictured earlier, took nine strokes to do it, winning prizes for “nine on nine”:
Photo: “Nine on Nine” winners.
“Closest to the pin” winners were Darlene Kneabone, Kris Currie, and Rick Doiron:
Photo: Darlene Kneabone

Long drive winners were frequent women’s winner Brenda Campbell, and Dave Hunt who won the “longest men’s drive for a person whose last name is not Currie” category, after Kris and Carl, who were first and second, opted out of the prizes.

Following the awarding of the main prizes, a large number of door prizes were handed out, with just about everyone in attendance going home with a prize or two.

The golfers also had a tenth “hole” this year, with each player getting four chances at “washer toss” with each successful toss resulting in a reduction in the teams score.

Teams then hit the deck to discuss their best shots over a drink (or two):

Gord Peters foursome wins annual golf tourney
The weather couldn’t have been any better again this year at the Cornwall Curling Club’s annual 9 hole best ball golf tournament at beautiful Countryview Golf Course in Fairview, with a great turnout again this year. As usual, there was some fine golfing on the course:
There was also lots of great conversation, and a drink or two, on the deck:
There were two barbecues in action, as Kimball (pictured), Bob, Carole, and others cooked the burgers and sausages to perfection:
Finally, all the teams had finished their rounds, and it was time to hand out the hardware. Roy Coffin picked up a prize for closest to the line (he was ON it), and for the long drive on hole number 6 (open to men and women).
Photo: Roy Coffin
Linda Fairhurst was also a double winner, capturing both closest to the pin and longest drive honours for the women.
Gord Peters was the closest to the pin on the men’s side, while Leigh Carragher had the longest drive.
The team of (right to left) Neil Smith, Marg Stewart, Eileen Blanchard, and Rupert Sweetapple won the coveted award for the “Most Determined” team. There were actually three teams tied for the highest score, and the Smith team were the lucky winners of the random draw.
The winning team of the day was the foursome of Gord Peters, Melody Beck, Matt Thomson, and Mike Lafontaine:

2009 Event
It was a hot day as the combattants hit the links for the Cornwall Curling Club’s 2009 annual golf tournament at the Countryview Golf Course. As part of Countryview’s tenth anniversary celebrations, course owners Carl and Karen Currie had just opened two new holes, turning the best-ball tourney into an 11 hole event.
Here’s a couple of shots of some of the teams finishing up:
While the last teams were still out on the course, the early-finishers kept to the shady part of the deck, and kept hydrated with copious quantities of liquids.
Photo: shady characters
Meanwhile, Karen Currie grilled up burgers and dogs to feed the hungry golfers.
Photo: Karen on the ‘cue
Finally, the last teams finished play, and it was time for the awards ceremony.
It turned out that the last team on the course, a three-person team consisting of Bob Fowler, Bev (Nucker) Richards, and Dan MacRae (who seemed to know his way around the course) emerged the winners, with an amazing three under par. Organizer Rick Doiron was determined not to give the trophy to any team containing Bob Fowler, and presented them each with a golf ball instead.

Finally, he relented, and brought out the trophy.

Closest to pin number 8 (men) – Dick St.John

The last prize presented was for the “most determined” team, which included Paul Arsenault and Mary Plamondon.

After the awards, door prizes were drawn for those present. As usual, very few, if any, went home empty-handed.
The great weather resulted in one of the largest turnouts ever, around 60 participants. Incoming curling club president John DeLuca was on hand to thank the golfers, and the organizers, including Bob Fowler, Rick Doiron, Carol Sweetapple, Ray Biage, and Karen and Carl Currie, and said that he hoped to see everyone back at the Cornwall Curling Club in October.

June 27 is the date for our annual Club golf tournament at Countryview Golf Course, route 19 in Fairview. Cost to participate is only $25.
This is a nine hole best ball event, which means that you don’t have to have much (any) experience in order to participate. If you are less experienced, you will be put on a team with more experienced players. Following the golf, there will be a barbecue on the clubhouse deck, and a winners circle with prizes for lowest score, longest drive, closest to the pin, most “determined” team, etc., along with lots of door prizes (I don’t think anyone went home empty-handed last year).
Putting Contest Decides 2008 Golf Tourney
It was a cool, windy and drizzly day, but the real rain stayed away for the 2008 Cornwall Curling Club golf tournament at beautiful Countryview Golf Course. There were a few no-shows due to the weather, so organizer Bob Fowler divided the event into two divisions – one for three member teams, and one for four-person teams.
While the final teams were on the course, the teams from the earlier rounds discussed their play back at the clubhouse.
Photo: Warm and dry
Outside, Karen Currie (missing from photo while she went to the kitchen for more burgers), Ray Biagé, and Valerie Acorn cooked up a delicious burger, hot dog, salad and brownies meal to feed the hungry multitudes.

On the course, the last two teams were wrapping up:
Photo: Looking good!
Photo: Job done!
Photo: No birdie for Bob!
Photo: Good game!
Oh no! Looks like we’ve got a tie between the four-member Kentucky Fried Chickens, and a three-member team, anchored by course-owner Carl Currie.
Bob decides to engage the two teams in a putting contest. A four-hole course is mapped out on the practice green, and the two teams play off for the coveted trophy.
Rick and Tracy from the Chickens think they have it aced, as they line up Tracy’s shot:

Head Chicken Angus Davies also misses a close one to give the lead to the other team:

When it was all over, the hardware went to the three-person team of Marie MacDonald, Carl Currie, and Rupert Sweetapple.

The Kentucky Fried Chickens had to settle for second:
Photo L-R: Jean Anderson, Angus Davies, Tracy MacDonald, Rick Doiron
The prize for the team with the “most dedication” went to Chick Morrison, Greg St. John, and Daphne Crosby. Longest drive went to Gary Crosby (men) and Karen Currie (women) . Valerie Acorn took the honours for “closest to the line” (new event this year) on hole number one. Closest to the pin for the men was Donald Weeks, while no-one was able to hit the green to take the honours for the women.
Following the distribution of the main prizes, a large number of door prizes were drawn for.
Thanks to the many organizers, including Bob Fowler, Carl and Karen Currie from Countryview, Allan and Valerie Acorn, Ray Biagé and Barb Duncan-Biagé, and Rick Doiron for another successful Golf Tournament!
Have a good summer everyone, and we’ll see everyone back at both Countryview Golf Course and the Cornwall Curling Club for the Golf and Curling Transition Spiel in mid-October!

Here’s a report from the 2007 event:
The weather could not have been better for the 2007 Cornwall Curling Club golf tournament at the Countryview Golf Course in Fairview, with 31 curlers participating in this other Scottish sport. On the course, there was the usual search for lost balls:

We’re not sure what this team was up to, as normally, only one person putts at a time!

While the final teams were putting-out, the organizers were preparing a feast of hamburgers, potato salad, coleslaw, and yummy chocolate brownies.

While Bob Fowler was reviewing the scorecards, the attendees soaked up the sun on the deck and enjoyed the fine food (and a drink or two).

When the scores were tallied, the three-player team of Carl Currie, Tracey Lee MacDonald, and Hank Kamphuis came up the winners, with a score of thirty-three.

There was also a prize for the team who showed the most honesty when recording their score.
The prize for men’s longest drive went to big Rob Young, while the women’s went to (not so big) Tracy MacDonald.
Closest to the pin for the men went to Lester Callbeck, while new golfer Cyndi Russell took the honours for the women. All participants received a gift of tees, a ball marker and a divot tool from Countryview, and many also received door prizes, with the big prize of two golf rounds, complete with power cart, going to Eileen Leahey.
Thanks to the organizers and helpers, including Bob Fowler, Aaron Campbell, Carl and Karen Currie from Countryview Golf Course, and Ray and Barb Biagé, along with Gord Matthews of Kenmac Energy for donating some of the prizes. and all the participants. See you back at Countryview and the Cornwall Curling Club in mid-October for the annual golf and curling transition spiel!
