The A section finals are set after opening day play at the triple-knockout Pepsi Bottling Group PEI Junior Curling Championships, for curlers age 20 and under, being played at the Montague Curling Club,
In the five team junior women’s section, the defending champion rink skipped by Sarah Fullerton of Cornwall, and the 2011 Canada Games team skipped by Amanda MacLean of the Maple Leaf club in O’Leary, remain undefeated, and have advanced to the A final Monday morning at 9. In action Sunday, the Fullerton foursome beat the Carolyn Rose team of Montague 9-6, while the MacLean rink beat the Veronica Smith team from Cornwall in a high-scoring 15-12 match. Earlier, the Smith rink beat Charlottetown’s Megan Davies team 13–1.
In the eight team junior men’s section, it will be the Spencer Pitre rink from Charlottetown taking on the Samuel Ramsay team, with members from the Charlottetown, Montague, and Silver Fox clubs, in the 12:30 pm Monday A final. The Pitre team beat the Cody Dixon rink from Montague 12-3 in the opening draw, and last year’s 17 and Under champs, the Matthew MacLean rink from O’Leary by a 9-5 score in draw two. The Ramsay team downed the Owen Collier foursome from Montague 13-1 in their opener, and went on to beat Charlottetown’s Alex Matters rink 8-1 in their second game.
In other games, Cornwall’s Jeffrey Taylor rink lost 6-5 to Matters, and blanked Collier 14-0, while the Canada Games team, skipped by Tyler Smith, lost 8-5 to MacLean, but beat Dixon 8-6.
Monday women’s draws are at 9 am and 4 pm, with men’s action at 12:30 and 8 pm. The B section finals go Tuesday at 8:30 am (women’s) and 1 pm (men’s), Both C finals go Tuesday evening at 8:30 The two game championship round, which would not be needed if a team won all three sections, takes place Wednesday at 11:30 am and 3 pm.
The winning teams advance to the M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors, January 29-February 5, 2011, in Calgary AB.
