Ice Sheet Dividing Boards Removal Pros and Cons, by Brent Irving

As the ice technician, I am in favor of removing the dividing boards between the sheets for the reasons outlined below but feel it is a board-level or club-level (AGM) decision.

PROS OF REMOVING BOARDS:

When ice freezes it expands so as it has to expand somewhere so it generally bulges in the middle (like ice cubes). Having dividing boards results in a middle bulge on every sheet as opposed to one bulge in the centre of all sheets with no dividing boards. Can also scrape with blade slightly on other sheet giving better scraping patterns hopefully avoiding ice issues like high centres or bowled centres and it is quicker to do an odd number of scraping patterns. It also removes the hazard of running into the dividing boards with the scraper which can (and has) damage the scraper. The scraper also cannot get right to the edge of the boards so they have to be hand scraped to avoid a ridge building up there and potentially tipping the blade and causing a run in the playing area.

IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN THIS WAY.
Not sure if this is a pro or a con.
