Berry and vanOuwerkerk teams to represent Cornwall at the PEI Curling Club Ch’ships

Cornwall’s representatives for the PEI Curling Club Championships were determined at our Club playdowns on the weekend.

(L – R) Marjorie Matthews, Gloria Turner, Linda Fairhurst, Shirley Berry

Shirley Berry, with teammates Linda Fairhurst, Gloria Turner, and Marjorie Matthews, defeated the team led by Debbie Rhodenhizer in two straight games by identical 7 – 4 scores to wrap up the double-knockout Women’s event on Saturday evening. The first contest saw Team Rhodenhizer up by a score of 4 – 3 after 6 ends, but a triple steal in the 7th by Berry led to the win. In the second game, Berry jumped out to an early 3 – 1 lead and sealed the victory and the championship when they took 4 points in the 6th end.

(L – R:) Pat Ramsay, Nick vanOuwerkerk, Sam Ramsay, Steve vanOuwerkerk

In the Men’s event, Steve vanOuwerkerk, with Sam Ramsay, Nick vanOuwerkerk, and Pat Ramsay, went through the double knockout event undefeated to advance to the Provincial event. In the first draw, vanOuwerkerk edged the Rob Gallant rink 5 – 4,  while defending Club champion Mark MacDonald and his team beat Team Elliot Doiron by a 9 -5 count. Draw 2 saw Gallant eliminate Doiron, and vanOuwerkerk defeat MacDonald in six ends. The B side final saw the MacDonald foursome get back on track, as they closed out their game with Gallant in 6 ends to punch their ticket to the championship match.

The final game was a closely-fought affair, with the score tied at 4 coming home. Steve vanOuwerkerk drew to the 4-foot to pick up the single point and the win, to advance to the provincial championship.

The PEI Curling Club Championship will be held at the Charlottetown Curling Complex March 6-10. The provincial winners will advance to the national event, with dates and venue yet to be announced.
