Dowling-Shaw and Doherty rinks win our Club Championships in exciting come-from behind final games!

There was some very exciting curling action here on Sunday as our Club Champions, who will go on to the provincials in Crapaud (Women’s) and Montague (Men’s) were decided, with both teams coming from behind in their final games to pull out the win.

Organizer Peter Murdoch has all the details, with photos by our Club Manager.

Cornwall Women’s Club Champions (L-R): Sharon Campbell, Val Acorn, Katie Shaw, Susan Dowling-Shaw

Women’s finalist team (L-R): Shirley Berry, Karen Currie, Arleen Harris, Gloria Turner

On the Women’s side, Team Dowling-Shaw claimed the “A” side while Team Berry came through on the “B” side of the draw meaning that Team Berry would need to win twice in the Double Knockout event. Team Berry was victorious on Saturday evening, forcing the deciding game on Sunday afternoon. Team Berry jumped out to a 4 – 1 lead after 4 ends but Team Dowling-Shaw chipped in to take the lead and tied the game up at 4 after the 7th end. Team Berry had the advantage of hammer in the 8th end but was unable to remove a Dowling-Shaw counter with their last rock, giving the win and the Championship to Dowling-Shaw.

Team Dowling-Shaw, consisting of Skip Susan Dowling-Shaw, Mate Katie Shaw, Second Val Acorn and Lead Sharon Campbell will represent our Club at the Provincial Curling Club Championship this weekend at the Crapaud Community Curling Club. Team Berry was comprised of Skip Shirley Berry, Mate Karen Currie, Second Arleen Harris and Lead Gloria Turner.

Cornwall Men’s Club Champs (L-R): Ryan Giddens, Brooks Roche, Kyle Holland, Robbie Doherty.

Men’s Finalist team (L-R): Wayne Goodwin, Brad Gardiner, Mark MacDonald, and Garth Cudmore.

In the Men’s event, Team Robbie Doherty and Team Mark MacDonald met on Sunday afternoon, with MacDonald needing the win to force a deciding game on Sunday evening. The game was a close one from the start with Team MacDonald holding a slim 3-2 advantage after 4 ends of play. Team MacDonald extended their lead and were up by 2 with the 8th end to play. Team Doherty had the hammer and needed to take out the MacDonald shot rock and hang around to get 3 and the win. Skip Robbie Doherty removed the MacDonald counter and rolled to the back eight-foot to pick up the 3 points and clinch the Championship. Team Doherty will now represent the Cornwall Curling Club at the Provincial event this weekend at the Montague Curling Club.

Members of the Men’s Championship team are Skip Robbie Doherty, Mate Kyle Holland, Second Brooks Roche, Lead Ryan Giddens and fifth player Lincoln Peters. Team MacDonald is comprised of Skip Mark MacDonald, Third Brad Gardiner, Second Wayne Goodwin and Lead Garth Cudmore.

Good luck to both of our Club Championship teams this weekend!
