Ice Queens Wrap-Up: A Note from the Bonspiel and Social Chairs

Murphy’s Ice Queens Wrap Up

The 2021 Murphy’s Pharmacy Ice Queens FUNspiel was held on Saturday, November 20. Upon arrival, participants were treated to fresh fruit from Cornwall Independent and scrumptious baked goods from Mary’s Bakery. Eight teams took part in the event, playing three six-end games in round robin format. Registration remained at $35 per person. The single-entry draw format was a terrific way for curlers to get to know each other and gain new skills and knowledge about curling.

Team Stavert (Ruth Stavert, Bernie Field, Marlis O’Rourke, Colleen Arsenault) swept the competition away, taking first place prize for the spiel. Second place was awarded to Team Bodner (Jenine Bodner, Gloria Turner, Sharon Campbell, Pat Blackett), and third place went to Team Clarke (Gloria Clarke, Melissa Creighton, Patsy McCarville, Darlene Doyle). Team MacDougall (Cathy MacDougall, Debbie Rhodenizer, Laurie Kelly, Char MacQuarrie) was presented the Spirit Award. After the first game, teams battled at their tables to win the title of Picture Puzzle Pros and Team Sweetapple (Carol Sweetapple, Donna Gill, Amanda MacIntosh and Laura Stapleton) easily took the win scoring 21/25. Carol Sweetapple also walked away with the 50/50 winnings!!! WTG Carol!!! Teams doubled up for the Murphy’s Ice Queens Trivia Challenge, between games two and three, and the winners (scoring 17/19) were Team Sweetapple (again) and Team Acorn (Valerie Acorn, Myrna Sanderson, Jenna Miller, Kim Muise). Congratulations to the winners and all curlers on a day well played!

This event would not have been the success it was without the continued support and generosity of our sponsors, Murphy’s Pharmacy (for all your pharmacy needs).

Exceptional quality and service was provided by each of our food vendors. Participants raved about the deliciously hearty soups from Sam’s Family Restaurant, the tasty sandwiches and veggie trays from Sobeys, fresh fruit and snacks from the Independent, and appetizing baked goods from Mary’s Bakery.

We would like to thank the Cornwall Curling Club Management and staff for their hard work and dedication leading up to and during the event…..Brent – ice maker extraordinaire, and Debbie, for tending the bar, assisting with clean up and sanitization as well as helping with lots of other little tasks throughout the day. Also a thank you to Katelyn for bartending and cleaning up towards the end of the day. You are a dynamic group of individuals who are essential to the growth of the club and overall member experience.

A special thank you to our amazing volunteers who continually step up to ensure these events run smoothly and everyone has a fabulous time. Thank you – thank you – thank you!

Until next time,

Sharon Campbell and Shauna McGill – Bonspiels and Socials Committee
