Provincial Senior Men’s Curling Ch’ship starts Friday. Cornwall’s Shirley Berry rink wins women’s title by default

The PEI Credit Unions Provincial Senior Men’s Curling Championship, for curlers age 50 and over, will be held at the Montague Curling Club February 20-24, 2015. Six men’s teams are entered, and will play a modified triple knockout format with a two game championship round, unless a team wins all three knockout sections, in which case they would be awarded the title without the final games being played. The  Ted MacFadyen team from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside won the event last year. MacFadyen is not back, but the other three members of his team – Lou Nowlan, Earle Proude, and Pat Aylward, are, with Mel Bernard stepping in as skip. Bernard, Nowlan, and Proude won the Provincial Masters title, for curlers age 60 and over this year, with Alan Montgomery as lead stone.

Other teams in the experienced field are the Rod MacDonald team from the Silver Fox and Charlottetown curling facilities, the Peter Gallant and Bill Hope rinks from Charlottetown, the Blair Jay foursome from the Silver Fox, and the Donald Clarey squad from the host club. MacDonald is 2013 champ and last year’s runner-up. Hope is 2011 champ. Gallant and MacDonald played together on the 20 10 winning team. Bernard skipped with Jay at third  on the 2007 and 2009 winning teams, and won at third in 2006. Bernard skip Lou Nowlan won the event back in 1997 at third, and 1999 at skip. Clarey has national experience at The Dominion Curling Club Championship in 2010 and 2011.

Senior Men’s Draw

(modified triple knockout format with 2 game championship round)

Championship round (Games Ch1, Ch2) scenarios:

(1) If  a team wins all three knockout sections, they will be the winners, without the championship round.

(2) If a team wins any two knockout sections, they will play in both championship round games Ch1 and Ch2 and win the title if they take either game, while their opponent, the winner of the other section, would have to win both.

(3) If there are three separate section winners, the one that played in the most section qualifier games (5, 12, 15) gets the bye to Ch2, while the other two would square off in Ch1, with the winner advancing to Ch2. If there is a tie in number of qualifier games played, the team who qualifies earliest gets the bye to Ch2.
