Wednesday Night Ladder League Teams, Rules, Qualifier Night Draw

Welcome to another season of the Wednesday Night Ladder League, with the first round sponsored by Don Lowther Snow Removal.

We are pleased to welcome back all of last year’s teams (with a few lineup changes, and a few players still being recruited), with the exception of the Jeff Taylor rink, who have moved up to the big leagues (Tuesday). This means we have a “perfect” draw of 16 teams, with no byes. In keeping with our tradition of starting fresh each season,  the first night, Oct. 20 will be Qualifier Night, with teams playing other teams at random, with the winners advancing to the A pool, and the runners-up going to the B.

Looking at the calendar, I see that we will have no curling on November 24, as The Dominion Curling Club Championships opening ceremonies and a women’s draw will be taking place here. After Qualifier Night, this gives us Oct. 27, Nov. 3, 10,  17 , Dec. 1, 8, 15, and 22 as dates before Christmas, and Jan. 5, 12, 19, 26, Feb. 2, 9, 16, 23, and March 2, 9, 16, 23, and 30 as dates after (we will not curl on  Dec. 29). This makes 21 weeks divided by three full seven-night round robin draws, with the second round starting a week before Christmas (Dec. 22), and the final round beginning February 16. If we miss a night due to storms or other reasons, that night’s draw will be cancelled, and the schedule for subsequent nights will not change. We will follow last year’s format of having everyone from the A pool on at one time, and everyone from pool B on at the other, with the times swapping each night.

RULES: This is an open, semi-competitive team entry league. Eight end games, with any combination of male and/or female players permitted. To keep this league on a less competitive level than the Tuesday night league, no more than two players on one Wednesday night team may be members of the same Tuesday night competitive league team. This rule will also apply if spares are needed. If you call up a spare from your Tuesday team, they should be replacing another team member that plays on Tuesday night, so that there are no more than two Tuesday night players on the ice.

No ties: Skips will draw to the button (with sweeping) to resolve individual game ties. Only the throwing team may sweep the rock — the opposing team may not sweep behind the tee.

League Points will be awarded as follows:

3 points will be awarded for a win, 1 point for a loss, 0 points for a loss by default. Scores will be kept as well, to be used only in end-of-round tie resolution. In the event of a default, the non-defaulting team will receive a score of one point for each scheduled end.

At least one regular team member and at least three players in total must be present to avoid a default. Team members can play any position and can change from game to game. When teams are tied in points after a round, the win/loss record of those teams against each other shall be used to determine their ranking (provided that the two teams faced each other in the round). When the ranking of teams cannot be determined by comparing round win/loss records against the teams involved in the tie, the ranking shall be determined by the score differentials of the teams who are tied. If they are still tied, the full score differentials of the teams who are tied will be used.

In the event of a cancellation, the cancelled week will not be played, and all subsequent draws will remain where they were.  Any cancellations will be posted on CornwallCurling.com.

Ladder format: At the end of each round, the bottom three teams from the A pool will descend the ladder to Pool B, while the top three teams from B will climb the ladder to A. The winners of both the A and B pools from each round, and the A pool runner-up in the final round will receive a prize at season end, courtesy of our generous sponsors.

The buzzer will be used to ensure the teams are off the ice within the 2-hour time period.  If the buzzer sounds, teams will complete the current end in play to finish  the game. If tied, the standard draw to the button will then take place.
