Cochrane one win away from PEI Tankard, Birt and Smith square off again, in Scotties “C” final

There are three games left in the schedule for the PEI Tankard at the Montague Curling Rink, but a win in any one of them — the 7 pm “C” final, or the 9 am or 2 pm Sunday championship round games, will give the men’s championship title to Bryan Cochrane and his Cornwall Curling Club rink, who remain undefeated after an 8-1 win over their Cornwall clubmates the Mitchell Schut team this afternoon in the “C” semi-final. Cochrane and his team will take on the Phil Gorveatt foursome from Charlottetown, who beat the Eddie MacKenzie team 7-6 in an extra end this afternoon in the other “C” semi, and will have to win all three games to take the provincial title.

Meanwhile, ten-time PEI Scotties winner Suzanne Birt from the host Montague club will take on Veronica Smith and her Silver Fox team in the Scotties women’s championship “C” semi, also at 7 pm. Birt, who won the “A” section of the modified triple knockout draw, stole the last end to edge the Melissa Morrow squad from the Fox 7-6 in the “C” semi this afternoon, and will take on “B” section winner Veronica Smith in this evening’s “C” final. The winner of the “C” final as the winner of two sections, will have a “double life” in the Sunday championship round at 9 am and 2 pm, and will take the title if they win either Sunday game, while their opponent will have to win both.

There is no admission charge to watch this combined event, with the women’s championship sponsored by Kruger Products, Canada’s #1 tissue products manufacturer and the longest national corporate sponsor of amateur sport in Canada, along with local event sponsors O’Connor Glass, Tim Hortons, and Bogside Brewing. 50/50 draws will be held, with proceeds going toward the Montague Junior Curling Program.

The kitchen will be open for lunch (soup or chili and sandwiches) and supper (regular menu). Food and beverages are also available at the Bogside brewery, only a three-minute walk from the club, and at Tim Hortons, just a six-minute walk away.

The winning women’s team will advance to the Scotties Tournament of Hearts, Feb. 15-23, 2020 at
Mosaic Place in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, while the men’s championship rink will compete in the 2020 Tim Hortons Brier, Feb. 29 to March 8, 2020 at Leon’s Centre in Kingston Ontario.
