Chloe McCloskey, left, and Aleya Quilty sweep a Sabrina Smith rock for the Katie Fullerton rink during play at the Pepsi provincial junior women’s curling championship in Alberton on Tuesday.

Fullerton beat Lauren Lenentine, also of the Cornwall Curling Club, 9-5 at the Western Community Curling Club on Tuesday night to sweep the modified triple-knockout format in the Pepsi provincial junior women’s curling championship at 4-0 (won-lost).

Lenentine finished 3-3, with all three losses coming in the A, B, and C qualifiers to Fullerton.

Five-ender

Tuesday night, Fullerton took a 6-3 lead with a five-ender in six, and then sealed the deal when Chloe McCloskey, who throws skip stones, hit and stuck for three with the final rock in nine.

“We all wanted it just as bad; it’s just as great as our first nationals,” commented Fullerton. “We were really determined to succeed, and we worked together.”

They will represent P.E.I. at nationals in Stratford, Ont. from Jan. 23 to 31.

Men

Three of the five teams in the men’s event are still in contention.

The Alex MacFadyen rink beat the defending-champion Tyler Smith rink 6-4 in the C qualifier on Tuesday night. Leading by one with hammer heading home, MacFadyen got his third stone, Kyle Holland, to clear guards from the front of the house, leaving him with clear view of a lonely Smith stone on his first throw.

Smith (3-2) and MacFadyen (5-2) will meet on Wednesday at 11 a.m., with the winner playing Matthew MacLean’s (3-2) Maple Leaf/Cornwall rink in a winner-take-all game at 4 p.m.
