Intro to our Little Rock and Novice Junior Programs, U16 Development League

The Cornwall Curling Club’s highly successful Junior program has developed both recreational junior curlers, and those who have become provincial, national and even world champions. We have Little Rocker and Novice instructional programs starting at age six, and a developmental league for Under 16 teams, too! We also offer practice time for those who have been through our instructional programs.

Last season our winner’s circle included:

Little Rockers

Sessions take place *Sundays 12:45pm – 2pm: (warm up 12:45pm-1pm, Curling Instruction 1pm-1:50pm/1:55pm, Cool Down 1:50/55pm -2pm)

The Little Rockers Program is a Junior Instructional Program for children ages 6-7.  This program is lead by our Little Rocker and Novice Facilitator, along with our coaching team and volunteers. The program is a Cornwall Curling Club initiative that is guided from Curling Canada  junior curling instructional programming.  Children will learn ice safety, basic curling techniques, and some of the basic rules of curling. The objective is safety, fun, social interaction, an introduction to the game, and active and inclusive living!  CSA approved helmets are a mandatory part of this program.

Our club abides by all recommendations from Curling Canada and Curl PEI for curler to instructor/supervision ratio. During the 2020-21 season we will practicing social distancing and all health and safety protocol will be enacted as per our Club Operational Manual(s). For more information on this, please inquire with the Junior Program Coordinator or Club Manager.
*A season schedule will be provided to families advising specific dates of curling sessions at the start of the season. Every attempt will be made to meet those dates. However, please note that when you purchase this product you are not solely purchasing “ice time”.
Instruction could include on or off ice instruction, video instruction, hand out, emails, etc…
The Cornwall Curling Club reserves the right to re-schedule (when possible) and/or cancel sessions due to weather and/or club events., without compensation.
 

Novice

The Novice Instructional Program consists of TWO sessions per week. Sunday 1:45pm-3pm (warm up 1:45 to 2pm, Curling Instruction 2pm-2:50pm/2:55pm,  cool down 2:50pm/2:55pm-3pm  plus Tuesday 4:45pm to 6pm (warm up 4:45pm-5pm, curling instruction 5pm-5:50pm/5:55pm, cool down 5:50pm/5:55pm to 6pm).

The Novice Instructional Program is for children ages 7-12 years old. This program is lead by our Little Rocker and Novice Facilitator, along with our coaching team and volunteers. The program is a Cornwall Curling Club initiative that is guided from Curling Canada  junior curling instructional programming. Children will learn ice safety, beginner and enhanced curling techniques, and the rules of curling. The objective of the program is safety, fun, social interaction, an introduction to the game, and active and inclusive living, and preparation for competitive play!  Typically (although not always, depending on the Program Coordinator’s lesson plans): Sunday sessions consists of instruction time and learning new skills. Some or all of Tuesday’s instructional plans are often used for game experience or enhanced skills development. CSA approved helmets are a mandatory part of this program.

U16 Junior Developmental League

The Pepsi Junior Development League will take place Saturday mornings starting at 10 am. There will be seven sessions over the course of the season. (TBA). The Draw Master will attempt to schedule the league play days as to not conflict with other provincial and Atlantics tournaments schedules, as much as possible. This U16 Junior Development League is intended to provide competitive league experience to U16 junior teams. For many, it will be their first introduction to such. There is a focus on learning the rules around tournament play, and a hope that experienced teams will mentor new teams. This league will run a minimum of seven available Saturday mornings.  Schedule to be determined.

However, The Cornwall Curling Club reserves the right to re-schedule (when possible) and/or cancel sessions due to weather and/or club events,  without compensation. The Draw Master can explain more about this policy if needed.

Every effort possible will always be made to allow for teams to re-schedule their games due to cancellation times related to weather or club events.

Practice


Provincials

There are a number of Provincial Championships available for Junior curlers to compete in each season, in the Under 13, Under 16, Under 18 and Under 21 (Juniors) age categories. Juniors may also compete in some provincial adult championships, including Mixed Doubles. There is also a less competitive Jamboree Day with fun activities. The U13 teams can be any combination of male and female while the others have separate male and female divisions. Helmet Policy

At the Cornwall Curling Curling Club anyone under 12, as well as everyone in the instructional program, is required to wear a helmet.
