U18 Ch’ships another big success for the Club!

The Provincial Under 18 Curling Championships wrapped up this afternoon at our Club, and were a huge success! Cornwall’s Lauren Lenentine rink won the women’s event, with the Lauren Moerike team coming third. The Club’s Donald DeWolfe team were runners-up in the men’s event, with third place going to the young Mitchell Schut team, also from our club.

The opening ceremonies were a big success (but a little hard to hear on the warm side of the glass when the wireless microphone cut out partway through!), with rave reviews for anthem singer Julien Kitson, and local piper Calum Brydon. Cornwall’s Katie Fullerton threw the ceremonial first rock, assisted by three Cornwall members – Annika, Tati, and Liam Kelly, and Cornwall town councillor Elaine Barnes paid her first visit the the Club, and appeared to be very impressed. The players praised the ice, and the warmup/practice music we provided, thanks to the on-ice sound system loaned to us by the Town.

The fresh-baked cookies, donated by Robbie Lenentine and ADL were very popular, especially among the younger spectators, and the sandwiches sold very well, too. Our donation jar collected $60, which will go toward our Junior program’s closing party, and the 50X50 draw was nothing short of spectacular, with over $700 raised to help cover lost ice rental and other expenses for the weekend, plus some profit for the Club.

I took the opportunity during both closing ceremonies to thank everybody who helped make this event a success, and I will also post it here:

Thanks to our organizing committee, including the Lenentine and O’Connor families, and Shellley Mackay. The events I’ve organized before were for quite a different age group, so it was wonderful to have people who knew what we needed for this age group.

Thanks to O’Connor Glass for covering expenses for our piper and anthem singer, along with snacks for the curlers, and to Margaret and David O’Connor for taking pictures.

Thanks to Robbie Lenentine and ADL for the great, easy to make cookies!

Thanks to the Cornwall parents of bonspiel participants, who helped us out with baking cookies and making sandwiches (including Marci White, Edith Huestis, and Margaret O’Connor), and the many parents who helped with selling 50X50 tickets.

Thanks to our opening ceremonies participants, including President Paula Ling, Curl PEI Pres Angela Hodgson, Elaine Barnes from the Town, our piper Calum Brydon, anthem singer Julien Kitson, 1st rock thrower Katie Fullerton, her helpers the Annika, Tati and Liam Kelly.

Thanks to Tracey MacLean and the Cornwall Recreation Dept. for loaning us the on-ice PA system for opening ceremonies, warmup music, and for the officials to use for giving instructions during practice and Last Stone Delivery.

Thanks to Amanda Bulger for doing the Curlcast online scoring, and for our many timers,  to the officials Shelley Ebbett, Yvonne Barbour and Kay Atkinson, to Curl PEI’s Amy Duncan, and to the daytime and junior curlers who gave up their ice for this event.

Thanks to the many timers, including Tom Dunn, Kimball Blanchard, Paul Durant, Jack Ferguson, Janette Fraser, Lew Black, Linda Fairhurst, Debbie Rhodenhizer, and Bryan Sutherland

Thanks to the Board of Directors and staff at the Cornwall Curling Club including manager Bev, bartenders Al, Debby, and Kelley, to Lance and the ice crew for great ice, and to Ray, who kept the place looking sparkling!

By the way, we’ll be calling for more volunteers in March as we host the  provincial Travelers Curling Club championship.

Thanks to everyone who bought 50X50 tickets, sandwiches and cookies, drinks, chips, curling supplies etc. and put money in our donation jar.

  • Derek MacEwen, Cornwall Curling Club Board of Directors member, and Under 18 Championship coordinator.

Cornwall’s Lenentine foursome win U18 women’s, men’s title to be decided on Monday

The host Cornwall Curling Club rink of skip Lauren Lenentine, third Kaleigh Mackay, second stone Breanne Burgoyne, and lead Rachel O’Connor, with coach Pat Quilty, have won the Curl PEI Provincial Under 18 Women’s Curling Championships, winning all three sections in the modified triple knockout draw, making a championship round unnecessary. In this afternoon’s “C” final, which turned out to be the championship game, they beat the Danielle Collings team from the Charlottetown, Montague, and Crapaud clubs by a 6-2 score, scoring a triple in the fourth end, and stealing a deuce in the seventh before running the Collings team out of rocks in the final end. The Lenentine team now advance to the Atlantic U18 Championships, March 25.27 at CFB Halifax. Other members of the runner-up Collings team are Alyssa Wright, who throws 4th stones, along with second Kaleigh Peters, and lead Lauren Ferguson, with coach Jamie Newson. Collings beat Cornwall’s Emma Coffin 9-4, while Lenentine beat Cornwall clubmate Lauren Moerike 6-4 to advance to the C final. Lenentine edged Moerike 5-4 in the A final, and Collings 4-1 in the B.

During the closing ceremonies, the Fair Play sportsmanship awards, as voted on by the  curlers in the event were announced, with skips Emma Coffin and Alex Gallant taking the honours. The coaching award, as voted on by the coaches in the event, went to Don Vickerson.

Meanwhile, the U18 men’s title will be awarded on Monday, with Tyler Smith and his Crapaud, Montague, and Silver Fox rink taking on Cornwall’s Donald DeWolfe in a two game championship round at 11 am and, if necessary, 3 pm. Smith won the first two section finals in the modified triple knockout draw, over DeWolfe, and Cornwall’s young Mitchell Schut team respectively, but lost to DeWolfe, by a 5-2 score in today’s “C” final. By winning two sections, Smith has an advantage in the championship round, as he will take the championship if he takes either game, while DeWolfe would have to win both to be declared champion. In today’s game, a stolen deuce in end four, and another deuce, in the seventh end, gave DeWolfe the advantage. DeWolfe edged Mitchell Schut, who was last year’s Under 13 champion, 4-3 this morning to advance to the C final.

The winner of the championship round tomorrow between Smith and DeWolfe will join the Lenentine team at the Atlantics in March.

Tyler Smith & Lauren Lenentine rinks could wrap up U18 Ch’ships Sunday afternoon

The Tyler Smith rink from the Crapaud, Montague, and Silver Fox rinks, and the Lauren Lenentine team from the host Cornwall Curling Club both captured their second of three section finals today, and could wrap up their respective Under 18 championships with a win in the “C” final Sunday at 3 pm. If they don’t win on Sunday, a win in either game of the two game championship round, scheduled for Monday, would give them the championship, while their respective opponents, the winners of the C flights in the modified triple knockout, would have to win both games.

smith1Photo: Tyler Smith

Smith won his B final today by a 9-3 score against the Mitchell Schut rink, three members of which were last year’s Under 13 champions, while the other member is 14. The young Schut squad defeated their Cornwall clubmates the Donald DeWolfe foursome 8-5 to advance to the B final, leading 7-0 after three ends. In the B final, a pair of triples gave Smith a 6-1 lead after 3 ends, and single and double Smith steals in ends four and five put the game out of reach for Team Schut.

Smith now faces the winner of an 11 am Sunday rematch between Schut and DeWolfe, in the C final at 3 pm Sunday. DeWolfe advanced to the C semi against Schut with a 7-2 win over Alex Gallant and his Western Community Curling Club team on Saturday afternoon.

lenentine1Photo: Lenentine rink

In the U18 women’s event, Cornwall’s Lenentine rink beat the Danielle Collings team from Charlottetown, Montague and the Silver Fox 4-1 in the Saturday evening B section final, stealing singles in ends four and five. Collings beat Emma Coffin of Cornwall 10-5 and Lauren Moerike 10-7 earlier on Saturday to advance to the section final. Collings fought back from a 5-1 deficit in the game against Moerike.

Moerike beat Maria Doyle from the Silver Fox 7-4, while Coffin beat clubmate Alexis Burris 8-3 in the Saturday evening draw. Lenentine takes on Moerike, while Collings faces Coffin in the “C” semi-finals at 11 am Sunday, with the winners playing in the 3 pm “C” final.

The eventual U18 men’s and women’s winners advance to the Atlantic Under 18 Curling Championships, from March 25-27, 2016 at CFB Halifax.

Team UPEI not advancing to CIS Championships

Team UPEI Women’s attempt to advance to their 4th straight CIS Championship has ended, after another loss at the Subway AUS Championship in the Antigonish area. The Veronica Smith-skipped team had a 2-3 record – not good enough for the playoffs, following a 7-6 loss to Dal. this afternoon. UPEI picked up  an 11-5 win over Memorial this morning. Dal sits at 5-0, with Acadia, Mt. A and UNB at 3-2.

Also not advancing, on the men’s side, is the defending UNB men’steam that includes former Cornwall member Alex Sutherland, and also has a 2-3 record.

Opening day is in the books at the Curl PEI Provincial Under 18 curling championships at the Cornwall Curling Club, and the first men’s and women’s qualifying spots out of the modified triple knockout draw for the Monday championship round have been filled.

Tyler Smith and his Crapaud, Montague and Silver Fox rink won the men’s “A” qualifier with an 8-2 victory over the host club’s Donald DeWolfe rink, which gives him a berth in the two game championship round on Monday. Smith, who is playing with just three curlers, as Alex MacFadyen is recovering from an operation, stole three ends in the game, which went seven ends. Smith now advances to the “B” final at 2 pm Saturday, against the winner of a 10 am game between DeWolfe and Cornwall’s Mitchell Schut, who beat his brother Devin 9-2 this evening.

The Lauren Lenentine and Lauren Moerike teams had a very close game, coming down to the last rock, with Lenentine drawing for a single, a 5-4 win, and a ticket to Monday’s championship round. Lenentine stole the first end, and a deuce in second, to led 3-0 after 2. Moerike stole singles in ends 6 and 7 to tied at 4-4, but Lenentine had last end hammer, and drew for the win. Lenentine and Moerike now await the winners of 10 am Saturday games between Alexis Burris from Cornwall and Maria Doyle from the Silver Fox, and between Danielle Collings and her Charlottetown, Montague, and Crapaud rink, and Emma Coffin of Cornwall, in matches at 2 pm Saturday, with the winners of  those games going to the 6 pm “B” finals.

The eventual winners will advance to the Atlantic Under 18 Curling Championships, from March 25-27, 2016 at CFB Halifax.

In the women’s final, the Huskies faced the host UPEI Panthers who had defeated the StFX X-Women by a score of 7-2 in semifinal play earlier in the day to advance to the final.

Saint Mary’s, skipped by Sara Spafford, jumped out to an early lead and held a 4-1 advantage at the fifth end break. Veronica Smith and her UPEI squad rebounded with a deuce in the sixth end and added a steal of one in the seventh to even the score at 4-4 with three ends to play.

Spafford and the Huskies managed to grab two points with the hammer in the eighth end and after exchanging singles in the final two ends, went on to post a 7-5 win and claim the 2015 Subway AUS women’s curling title, with both the SMU and UPEI teams advancing to the CIS championships – Team UPEI’s third straight CIS berth.

Team UPEI finished in 4th place at last year’s nationals, also receiving two individual awards, with third Jane DiCarlo selected CIS 2nd Team All-Canadian, for having the 2nd highest combination of shooting percentages and plus-minus among thirds in women’s round robin play, and lead Aleya Quilty winning the women’s R.W. Pugh Fair Play and Sportsmanship Award.

Cornwall’s Stratton/Craswell and Clarke/Stavert repeat as PEI Stick champs

It’s a repeat win for both the Open Division (any combination of male and female curlers), and the Women’s Division at the Ferguson-Logan Montague Funeral Home Provincial 2 Person Stick Championship, which wrapped up this afternoon at the Crapaud Community Curling Club. The Open final saw defending champions Sterling Stratton and Barry Craswell from the Cornwall Curling Club beat the Leonard Peters and Ruth Walsh duo from the host Crapaud club by a 6-1 score, running the hometown team out of rocks in the final end. The Women’s Division final, featuring the same teams as last year, went to an extra end, with Gloria Clarke and Ruth Stavert, who have now won 6 out of the seven championships of the event’s history, scoring a deuce for a 6-4 win over their Cornwall clubmates Etta Reid, who was on the 2014 winning team, and Myrna Craswell.

Championship Round set to go in Provincial Stick

Round robin play concluded this afternoon at the Ferguson-Logan Montague Funeral Home Provincial 2 Person Stick Championship at the Crapaud Community Curling Club, with some previous champions, and some new names advancing to the Friday championship round.

stickcurlpeilogosm

In the 12 team, two pool Open Division, which permits any combination of male and female players, the Cornwall team of Joe Gill and Wayne MacPherson, new to stick curling this season, after first playing it in the 55+ Games last year, finished atop the A pool standings with a 4-1 win-loss record.  The B pool was won by the Leonard Peters and Ruth Walsh rink, from the host club, who also had four wins and only one loss. These teams have byes into the noon Friday semi-finals, where Peters/Walsh will face the winner of a 10:45 am game between stick curling veterans Vernon Chowan/Ernie Stavert from Cornwall, and last year’s runners-up Floyd Stewart/Gordon MacDonald from Montague.

The other Open Division semi sees the Gill/MacPherson duo face the winner of the other 10:45 am match between defending champs Sterling Stratton/Barry Craswell, also from Cornwall, against longtime stick competitors Walter Callaghan and Roger Gavin from the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton. All the teams in the Friday morning games have 3-2 win-loss records following round robin play, as did the Bob Leard/Howard MacNeil twosome from Montague, who were eliminated on points as there was a 3 way tie for second in their pool and they were all tied 1-1 in head to head matches). The semi-final winners advance to the Open Division championship final at 2:30 pm Friday.

In the five team women’s pool, the Cornwall duo of Gloria Clarke and Ruth Stavert, who have won 5 out of the 6 provincial women’s stick championships held so far (Clarke was unable to compete in 2014), remain undefeated at 4-0, and have earned a bye to the 2:30 pm Friday final, against the winners of the 12 noon semi-final. against Jane Peters/Joan Doiron from Crapaud, who went 3-1 in the round robin, and Cornwall’s Etta Reid/Myrna Craswell duo, who were 2-2. Reid was on the 2014 winning team, and Reid/Craswell were last year’s runners-up.

The defending champion Sterling Stratton and Barry Craswell duo from Cornwall, along with new entrants Joe Gill and Wayne MacPherson, also from Cornwall, are 2-0 in the Open Divison, where teams can be made up of any combination of male and female players. Three teams are atop the other Open Division round robin pool, all with 2-1 win-loss records. Thibodeau and MacDonald win Ladder League round 2

laddercartoonWe’re down to the last round of the season at the Wednesday evening Ladder League. Round 2 was very close in the six team A pool, with four teams coming out with three losses, making it very difficult to determine a winner, especially when a team may have played another team twice (this was necessary to even the number of games out with the other pool). The teams in contention for top spot, each with 3 losses, were skipped by Robert Thibodeau, Donald DeWolfe, Paul Neima, and Bob Fowler. Fowler defaulted one game so is eliminated, as he has one less point. The rules state that we then look at head to head records between the teams. However, that is not possible as Thibodeau and DeWolfe played each other twice (each picking up  a win), while Neima had only one game against each, so the records aren’t comparable.

All we’re left with is to add up the points between the three teams, and divide by the number of games played against each other (3 for DeWolfe and Thibodeau, 2 for Neima. Doing this gets us:

Jan 6
DeWolfe 8, Neima 4

Jan 13
Thibodeau 11, DeWolfe 0

Jan 20
Neima 7 Thibodeau 6

Feb 3
DeWolfe 7 vs Thibodeau 6

Neima 11/2 = 5.5
DeWolfe 15 / 3 = 5
Thibodeau 23/3 = 7.67

So it looks like Thibodeau, helped out by an 11-0 win and two games with only a one point score difference, repeats as winner (despite not having beaten Neima!). The A pool in round 2 was sponsored by Mary’s Cornwall Bakery.

Only two teams drop down from the A to the B pool this round and three come up, so that the last round will have the extra team (and the bye) in the A pool. The teams dropping down are Kelly Watts with 4 losses. and Dave Younker, with 5.

Calculating the B winner, sponsored by Griffin’s Auto Service, is easy – Mark MacDonald picked up 5 wins and a loss. He’ll also be moving up to the A pool, along with Gord Peters and Val Acorn with just two losses each.

Here are the pools for Round 3. The Neima team has requested the bye in week one. We have an extra week at the end, and will use it if there is a cancellation on another night. If not, we’ll figure something else out.

Casey rink goes undefeated to repeat as PEI Tankard men’s champions

The Adam Casey rink from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club and the Charlottetown Curling Complex has made it a clean sweep – winning all six of their games, including the three section finals against Charlottetown’s Jamie Newson rink, to repeat as winners of the PEI Tankard provincial men’s curling championship. They defeated Newson 8-1 in just five ends in this afternoon’s “C” final at the Charlottetown Curling Complex, scoring four in the first end, keeping Newson to 1 in the second, blanking the third, and then scoring a triple in four and stealing a single in five for a seven point lead, and the Tankard title. Winning all three sections of the modified triple knockout draw eliminated the need for the two game championship round.

Playing with Casey were third David Mathers, second stone Anson Carmody, and lead Robbie Doherty, with coach Lincoln Peters. Completing the runner-up Newson foursome are third John Likely, second Mark O’Rourke, and lead Mark Butler, with alternate Andrew Robinson.

Team Casey now advances to the Tim Hortons Brier, March 5-13, 2016 at TD Place in Ottawa Ontario.

Casey rink one win away from Tankard repeat, Schut brothers finish Future Tankard

The Adam Casey rink from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club and the Charlottetown Curling Complex are just one win away from repeating as PEI Tankard provincial men’s champions, and they will have three opportunities to do it. After winning the A and B finals of the modified triple knockout, both against Charlottetown’s Jamie Newson, they beat the young Tyler Smith rink by an 8-2 score in five ends this afternoon  to advance to the C final.

caseydeliver2

Photo: Adam Casey

Their opponent in that final will, once again, be Jamie Newson, who beat the Tyler Harris team 7-1 in only four ends this afternoon, The “C” final goes at 1 pm Monday. If Casey wins that game, he takes the championship. If not, Casey and Newson then advance to a two game championship round, at 6 pm Monday and 4 pm Tuesday. Casey will win the title if he takes either game, while Newson would have to win both.

Other members of the Adam Casey team are third David Mathers, second Anson Carmody, and lead Robbie Doherty, with coach Lincoln Peters. Rounding out the Newson squad are John Likely, Mark O’Rourke and Mark Butler, with alternate Andrew Robinson. The winning rink will advance to the Tim Hortons Brier, March 5-13, 2016 at TD Place in Ottawa Ontario.

End by end Tankard scoring is available at PEICurling.com

The two team Future Tankard Under 21 developmental event wrapped up this afternoon, with the older of the Schut brothers, Devin, beating his brother Mitchell, who was playing with only three players today, by a 7-5 score, in the only game of the afternoon that went the full length. Mitchell won the opening game of the series, with Devin taking games two and three. The teams were also invited to breakfast with the Adam Casey team during the event.

Defending champion Adam Casey and his team from the Silver Fox and Charlottetown clubs are well on their way to repeat as PEI Tankard champs, after capturing the second of three section finals in the six team modified triple knockout provincial men’s championship at the Charlottetown Curling Complex.

The B qualifier, like the A, was against Charlottetown’s Jamie Newson rink, but was much closer than the 11-3 score in the A game. In the B, the score was tied 6-6 coming home, but Casey had the last rock advantage, and scored a single for a 7-6 win. Newson, who had last rock advantage in the opening end, scored first in today’s game, with a second end single. Casey took a triple in end three, and the teams exchanged deuces in four and five to give Casey a 5-3 lead at the 5th end break. He then stole 1 in the sixth, but Newson came back with a single and a stolen deuce to tie the game 6-all after 8. Casey blanked the 9th to retain last rock advantage in the 10th end, and scored a single for the win.

In other games this morning, the young Tyler Smith rink from Crapaud and Montague eliminated Tankard veteran Robert Campbell with a 7-6 win, while Tyler Harris and his Charlottetown and Montague team knocked out three time Tankard winner Eddie MacKenzie by an 8-7 score.

At 4 pm today, Casey plays Smith, with Newson taking on Harris, with the winners advancing to the C final, Monday at 1 pm. Also at 4 is the final game in the U21 Future Tankard developmental event, with the Schut brothers tied at 1 game apiece.

Winning two sections puts the Casey rink in a very good position. If they win their C semi-final this afternoon against Smith, a win in any one of their next three games (the C final or the two championship round games, at 6 pm Monday and 4 pm Tuesday) would give them the championship, while their opponent would have to win all three of their games. If they lose against Smith, they would still advance to both championship round games (against the C winner), and would take the title if they won either game, while their opponent would have to win both.

The eventual Tankard winner will advance to the Tim Hortons Brier, March 5-13, 2016 at TD Place in Ottawa Ontario.
