Red vs Blue Closing Spiel

1112021-22 season dates for the Red vs. Blue Bonspiel:April 1-2

Red once again King at Good’s Your Independent Grocer Red vs Blue competition!

Despite the event’s one-year hiatus, Team Red once again prevailed at the annual Your Independent Grocer Red vs Blue Celebration Spiel here at the Cornwall Curling Club, coming on strong in the final draw to grab a 781,000 to 737,000 point win over their Blue rivals, who lead throughout the week’s leadup events and right into the final draw of this event.

Thanks to our title sponsor Jonathan and his team at ‘Good’s Your Independent Grocer’, a hub of activity right here in Cornwall as everyone’s favourite stop for groceries and supplies!

(L-R), Sharon, Shauna

Lacey

Our weekend event was carefully planned by the Event Committee , including Lacey Gallant, Sharon Campbell, and Shauna McGill.

Paul

The committee also included Paul Neima, who was our amazing event Drawmaster (and as usual, sported some great Blue costumes, too)! Paul was super organized and so flexible in the face of constant change! Thank you Paul! Paul was supported by previous Drawmaster Ray Biagé. Thank you Ray for bringing your experience and suggestions with you.

We proceeded through the ‘Red and Blue~ Weekend Division’ with three cohorts of 32 curlers~ and this meant we could not all be together at one time as we could only have two of the three cohorts of 32 in the club at a time. While we were sad not to altogether, we certainly made the most of it!

It took much coordination and planning with the cohort separation and enhanced sanitizing rules this year resulting in a very busy weekend, but, by all reports, everyone had a blast!

Enjoying Sam’s Pizza!

Friday night curlers enjoyed a six-end game followed by some delicious pizza service~ which was provided in partnership with Sam’s Family Restaurant…. and was awesome!

Greg

Friday also included some Trivia fun with the one and only Trivia Master ~ Greg Lucas! Greg is truly a trivia rock star host and we thank him for spending the evening with us (and in some cases rushing along so we could make our cohort deadlines). Thanks Greg!

Saturday morning our curlers started the morning with a selection of freshly baked goods from Cornwall’s own Mary’s Bakery! The offerings, of course, included Mary’s legendary cinnamon rolls, as displayed here by Gary O’Sullivan, who was fortunate to win some at the prize table!

Lunch was a great meal of lasagna, Caesar salad and garlic bread!

Kelley

The Club staff was kept busy with bar service and sanitization measures and we thank Al, Kelley, and Debby for their great service!

The Red and Blue banker for the weekend was Carlene Peters and she was kept busy as teams cashed in! Carlene was a huge asset in her role and this event cannot proceed without her calculations — a huge commitment.

Anne with a Mary’s Bakery muffin!
Angela with some great prizes from O’Connor Glass, who also keep our bar staff safe with their donated plexiglass!

Thank you to Angela Sanderson who helped, as she always does, in any and all the ways needed. Thank you to Ann Boswall and Debbie Rhodenhizer who, while not participating in the curling, spent a good part of their afternoon helping us with lunch service and cleaning!

There were many participants who jumped in when needed to help and we are so very thankful. You support is what helps to offer a fun couple of days of curling for so many!

Brent (left) and Chris

Saturday afternoon Club President Chris MacDougall, offered a genuine thank you on behalf of the membership to our Club Ice Technician, Brent, for leading our ice maintenance team, which includes Danny Kneabone, Mitchell Schut, and Chase MacMillan, and providing us great ice conditions all season!

Chris also thanked our Club Manager,  Lori, for her time and dedication to the club. Lori expressed that the club has such a wonderful membership, a hard-working Board of Directors, dedicated staff, amazing volunteers, and incredible support in our partners to be able to offer community recreation.

The door and winning-colour prizes were awesome and we are so grateful to all of our sponsors and members who donated items. Check out our photo gallery for lots of pictures of the prizes and winners!

On Friday night, we drew for a Junior membership. All Little Rockers, Novice, and Juniorscurlers who participated in the varous Red and Blue events were entered. Congratulations to the winner, Ben Bradley!

Carlene

On Saturday a draw was held for a 2021-22 adult membership. All adult curlers names who participated in the Red and Blue Stick Division, Daytime Division, and Weekend  Division were entered. The winner was Club supporter and volunteer extraordinaire (and our banker for the event) Carlene Peters!

A special thank you to those who helped to clean up  ~ Shauna McGill, Bryan Sutherland, Chris MacDougall, Kellie-Lynn Younker, and everyone else who jumped in to get the room out back to normal!

To recap, it was a great Red and Blue competition at the Club, with Blue grabbing an early lead with our Little Rockers and Novice leadoff event on March 30, then increasing their lead at the Junior event on Saturday morning April 3rd with some special guests and continued to lead with the afternoon Junior Skills Competition.

Blue was still ahead after the 2nd Little Rockers/Novice event on April 6th, and again increased their lead slightly at the Daytime Stick Curling event, while Red won by a slim margin in the Daytime Curlers event.

Thanks to everyone who participated in any of the Red vs. Blue the events, have a great summer, and we’ll see you back on the ice in the fall!!

Here are the final rosters for our Good’s Your Neighbours Independent Grocer Red and Blue Celebration Spiel on Friday evening and Saturday!

Please check for your name, as we’ve had to make a few adjustments since the initial versions, and don’t forget to wear your colour!

Although Red has won this event in recent years, the Blue team, as a result of our lead-up events has, at last count, a 29 lead point lead going into the weekend, so it’s going to be an exciting finish! As we’ve done in recent years, this spiel will follow a “skins” format. In skins curling, teams compete for “skins” rather than points. A team can win a skin by stealing an end or scoring two or more points in an end while with the hammer.

We are including the “Important Spiel Info” and the Event Schedule from our last post following the updated rosters.

  • We will be using a Skins game format, and the points allotted per end will be posted around the club.
