Taylor and Smith runners-up at 17 and Under

Alex Matters rink wins 17 and Under Men’s section; Amanda MacLean team wins women’s

The Charlottetown Curling Club rink of Alex Matters. Chris Gallant, Kyle Holland, and Andrew Cameron, with coaches Derrick Cameron and Peter Gallant, beat the Jeffrey Taylor foursome from the Cornwall Curling Club 7-5 this evening to capture the men’s section of the Sylvan Learning 17 and Under provincial curling championships at the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary. Other members of the runner-up Taylor team are Alex Sutherland, Alex Jenkins, and Jonathan Schut, with coaches Alan (AJ) Campbell and Bryan Sutherland.

Matters won the A and C sections of the triple-knockout event, while Taylor took the B.  Taylor forced this evening’s sudden death game with a 4-1 win over Matters this afternoon.

PEI’s Canada Games women’s team of Amanda MacLean, Kassinda Bulger, Emily Gray, and Aleya Quilty, with coaches Glen MacLean and Shelley Gray, from the host Maple Leaf Curling Club, who had already won the A and B sections, beat Cornwall’s Veronica Smith team this morning by a 10-3 score, aided by a 5 point fourth end, to capture the C final, and become the Sylvan Learning 17 and Under women’s champions, without the need to play the two game championship round. Playing with runner-up Smith were Katie Fullerton, Sabrina Smith,  and Chloe McCloskey, with coach Paul Smith.

The men’s and women’s 17 and Under champions will advance to the Sylvan Learning Atlantic 17 and Under. April 15-17 at the Charlottetown Curling Club. As PEI is the host province this year, it is anticipated that the runners-up will also receive invitations to the event, as host teams.
