Cornwall’s Annika Kelly, Chloé McCloskey win $500 scholarships

curlatlanticurlingcanada

The Trustees of the Joyce Myers Trust Fund, established under Curl Atlantic from
profits from the 2003 Brier and the 2005 Roar of the Rings curling events in Atlantic
Canada, have announced the 2016 recipients of its Student/Athlete Scholarships and
Curling Club Capital Works and Curl Atlantic Member Association Program Initiatives
grants.

The 2016 Joyce Myers Scholarship recipients are:

  • Prince Edward Island ($500 each): Annika Kelly, Chloé McCloskey, Brooks Roche
  • Nova Scotia ($500 each): Karlee Burgess, Matthew Manuel
  • Newfoundland and Labrador ($500 each): Kyle Barron, Sarah Ford, Liam Gregory
  • New Brunswick ($500 each): Justine Comeau, Samantha Crook, Peter Robichaud

The 2016 Joyce Myers Capital Works Grant recipients will each receive $1500. The successful curling centres are:

  • Sussex Golf and Curling Club, NB
  • Silver Fox Curling Club, PE
  • Bluenose Curling Club, NS
  • Caribou Country Club, NL

The 2016 Joyce Myers Program Initiative Grant will be used to help license the “Rocks and Rings”
elementary school program throughout Atlantic Canada. “This joint initiative between
Curl Atlantic and the four Atlantic associations appears to fit well with the
intent of junior curling development of the Joyce Myers Trust Fund and with Curl
Atlantic”, said Gary Wilson, Chair of Curl Atlantic. “The Rocks and Rings program is a
great way to introduce and bring curling to the school setting.  The program has
received much attention during the televising of Curling Canada’s championship events, and
is hugely popular across the country and in great demand.”

Backgrounder:

The Joyce Myers Trust Fund is an Atlantic Canada initiative to foster the development
and promotion of the sport of curling throughout Atlantic Canada.

The Trust Fund, which was established from profits from the 2003 Nokia Brier and
2005 Tim Horton’s Roar of the Rings, provides funding for the development of curling
in Atlantic Canada through grant opportunities for Curling Club Capital Works projects,
Student/Athlete Scholarships, and Curl Atlantic Member Association Program
Initiatives.

The trustees of the Joyce Myers Trust Fund announced plans for future investments in
the sport of curling for Atlantic Canada and released its first grants during the 2009-2010 curling season.
Joyce Myers was inducted into both the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame and the
Canadian Curling Hall of Fame as an athlete and a builder. Joyce’s accomplishments
as an athlete, administrator, coach and official made her one of the most versatile and
impacting persons in Nova Scotia sports. Her passion for sport and the countless
hours she contributed to many individuals and events has left a lasting impression.
Joyce was a true inspiration and mentor to many.

Capital Acquisition Grants

The Trustees of the Joyce Myers Trust Fund created the Capital Acquisition Grants as
a means to assist member curling clubs within Atlantic Canada with capital projects.
Expenses that are of a special and/or extraordinary nature will be eligible for funding.
In other words, programs and initiatives that are both unusual and occur infrequently;
they are not part of the regular, day-to-day operation of the club. Listed below are a
few possibilities:

The repair, replacement, purchase or construction of a curling facility or part of a
curling facility. For example, the repair or replacement of a curling club roof;
The repair, replacement or purchase of a plant asset or piece of equipment. For
example, the repair or replacement of ice making equipment.

The purchase of special curling equipment. For example, the purchase of little rocks
for a junior curling program;

Exempt from funding are any expenses of an operational nature. For example,
membership dues, utility and tax bills do not qualify.

Scholarships

Curl Atlantic has implemented a scholarship to curlers who have enrolled in full time
studies in a post-secondary institution. The intention of these awards is to allow
talented athletes to devote primary sources of time and energy to training, rather than
extensive employment in order to fund post-secondary education. Recipients will be
expected to devote a full-time, shared commitment to sport and education exclusively.
This award is not intended to reward past achievements but rather a means to pursue
further achievements that surpass the current level of performance. Priority will be
given to athletes attending Atlantic universities, colleges or vocational schools.
$1500 is allocated per province, divided among the recipients.

Club caters another successful event!

Thanks to everyone who helped out on Thursday as we catered a lobster/steak dinner to the PEI Road Builders and Heavy Construction Association! There was a huge attendance this year, with the Premier, the Leader of the Opposition, and the Mayor of Charlottetown among the many attendees, and everyone was served in record time!

We won’t name everyone individually in case someone gets missed, but here are a couple of pictures of the kitchen crew:

rbkitchen1rbkitchen2Here are some of the servers waiting for the Road Builders to be seated:

rbkitchen3Behind the scenes were many more, who cut up the lobster, barbecued the steaks, prepped the potatoes, salads, etc., setup and put away tables and chairs, along with Bev and Al who ran the two very busy bar locations. Thanks to Barry Craswell for organizing the event again this year, which has proven to be a great fundraiser for the Club!

We’ve got one more Club event this season – the golf tourney at Countryview on June 18th. Hope to see everyone there, and have a great summer everyone!

Thursday is Road Builders Day!

Just a quick reminder that Thursday May 26 is our third annual catering event for the PEI Road Builders and Heavy Construction Association’s Lobster or steak dinner. Those who volunteered previously or expressed an interest have been contacted by Barry Craswell or Carlene Peters, but the greatest need is always for servers for the meal, so if you want to help please come out to the hall upstairs by 7 pm to help serve the meal, which begins at 7:30. Unlike the winter event we also host for them, this is a sit-down meal, with the food brought to the tables (along with extra food later, if they want).

This event is a great fundraiser for our Club!

Attention Eastlink email subscribers

logo-eastlinkWe are having an issue with Eastlink email subscribers to our website’s emailing system. Our website posts all show up in our logs as having been sent successfully to Eastlink’s mail server, but they don’t show up in the inboxes of the recipients. We have reported this to Eastlink, and are hopeful that they will fix it in a timely manner.

In the meantime, we have subscribed our 19 Eastlink email subscribers to another mailout system, which uses a different mail server than our regular server, and believe this will work around the problem. Eastlink email subscribers will have received an email with subject “Confirm your subscription for Cornwall Curling Club”. Please click on the “Confirm Follow” link to begin receiving our post emails.

Depending on how this new system works out, and whether or not Eastlink can resolve the problem with the old system, we will decide whether or not to move our other 200 subscribers to the new system or retain the old one.

AGM highlights successful season at the Cornwall Curling Club

agm2Our Annual General Meeting was held last night, with a good crowd on hand, despite the great weather. Each committee chair, and President Ling, gave their reports, outlining a very successful season, with membership up, most bonspiels full, newly reconditioned rocks, and a number of championships won.  It was also announced that the Town of Cornwall would be getting the steel rafters in the ice house painted in September, before next season’s startup.

The finance report showed that the Club is in good shape, with a net surplus for the season of about $9000, up about $7500 from the previous season.  Membership was up, from 288 to 307, but membership revenue declined by about $1000, as there were more juniors, who pay less (but are the future of any club!). Great effort was put toward advertising signs this year, with revenue up over 86%! Wine, and beer (especially draft) sales, were up, while liquor sales were down, and coolers stayed about the same. Pro shop sales and ice rentals were each up around 12%, with our major expenses – wages, electricity, and rent, up only slightly.

Five Board of Directors members: Frank Martin, Edgar Coffin, Carlene Peters, Jeff Taylor, and Derek MacEwen have fulfilled their terms of office and are leaving the Board, while an equal number of new Board members were acclaimed: Chris Creighton, Gary O’Sullivan, Darlene Howlett, Jean Sinclair, and Angela Sanderson. The new Board will meet over the summer to appoint the officers for next season.

We will again be catering the PEI Roadbuilders and Heavy Construction Association’s Lobster or Steak dinner, on May 26. Barry Craswell will be heading this up again, and will be looking for volunteers to help cut lobster, barbecue steak, cook potatoes, prepare salads, plate and serve meals, setup and cleanup, etc.

At the AGM, more names were added to the roster for the June 18 Golf Tourney, which Gary O’Sullivan is organizing.
