Another season has wrapped up at the Cornwall Curling Club, with our U18 teams returning from their nationals in St. Andrews New Brunswick on the weekend. It’s been another great year for our teams, players, and coaches with lots of championships and awards won, including our first member ever to be on a World Championship team! Here’s a wrapup of the 2017-2018 season:
World championships

After her provincial Junior win, Cornwall’s Lauren Lenentine was chosen to be Alternate player on the Katelyn Jones Canadian Junior championship team from Nova Scotia at the World Championships, which went on to win the World title. Later it was announced that she would be joining the team for the 2018-2019 season, replacing a player who has aged out. She will begin competing with them at the end of April when they travel to Calgary for the Champions Cup Grand Slam of Curling from April 24-29.
Team Lenentine also announced that Kristie Rogers will be moving to Newfoundland and Labrador to attend Memorial University, and will be continuing to play Juniors there.
Canadian championships:
Cornwall member Lauren Ferguson competed in the Canadian Mixed Doubles in Leduc Alberta, picking up a win against John Epping and Dana Ferguson and playing some of the world’s best, including Jennifer Jones/Brent Laing, Jocelyn Peterman, and Val Sweeting.
Canadian Juniors
The Lauren Lenentine rink had a great start, winning their first five games in the round robin, and heading to the playoffs at 5-1. but didn’t do so well in the championship round, finishing with a 5-5 win-loss record.

Team Ferguson from Cornwall, Crapaud, and Charlottetown went 3-3 win-loss, just missing the playoffs and competing in the Mixed Doubles, where David Murphy got to coach the Gold Medal team, Lauren Ferguson played on the Silver Medal team, and Lexie Murray competed in the Bronze Medal game. Cornwall’s Team Mitchell Schut had some very close games, but didn’t pick up a win in the round robin. Colin MacKenzie from Team Schut won the Fair Play award for boy’s leads.
Everest Canadian Seniors in Stratford Ont.
PEI was represented by the Cornwall teams skipped by Shirley Berry and Bill Hope. They didn’t make the championship round, but Berry finished with an overall record of 4-5, and Hope went 3-6.
2018 Coastland Engineering and Surveying Canadian Masters Curling Championship in Surrey/White Rock BC.
Team PEI women, skipped by Cornwall’s Sandy Hope, made the championship pool in the event, finishing with a 5-4 win-loss record overall, while the PEI men, skipped by Cornwall’s Bill Hope, had a combined two wins and seven losses in the round robin and seeding pool. Team PEI’s Craig Mackie won the men’s sportsmanship award.
Regional Championships
Maritime Masters
The Bill Hope rink won the men’s division of the Maritime Masters Curling Championships at the Bluenose Curling Club in New Glasgow NS. The team normally includes Craig Mackie, but Edgar Coffin substituted for Mackie, who had work commitments, at this event.
Maritime Stick
The Gloria Clarke and Ruth Stavert duo were runners-up in the women’s event, at the Maritime Stick in Chester NS.
Provincial Championships
Travelers
Cornwall’s Debbie Rhodenhizer rink, which includes Nancy MacFadyen, Sandra Sobey, and Cindy Nicholson, definitely wins the “Extra Effort” award this year, winning two tiebreakers, the semi-final, and then two final games (both in extra ends) against previously-undefeated Melissa Morrow and her rink from the Silver Fox in Summerside. Morrow was a member of the 2015 Travelers Canadian Championship rink, out of Cornwall (our 1st Canadian championship at a Curling Canada event). Team Rhodenhizer will now move on to the nationals at the Miramichi Curling Club in Miramichi New Brunswick, from November 19 to 24, 2018. The Cornwall men’s team, skipped by Garth Cudmore, went 1-5.
U13 held here at Cornwall
Ella Lenentine, from the host club, skipped the B division championship rink with a high-scoring win over the Nate MacRae foursome from Charlottetown. Team Ella Lenentine includes third Ashlyn Shaw, second Erika Pater, and lead Kacey Gauthier. Robbie Lenentine was coaching.
U16
It was two championships in six days for both Mitchell Schut from the Cornwall Curling Club and Lauren Ferguson from the Charlottetown, Cornwall and Crapaud clubs, capturing the Under 16 championships on a Sunday afternoon at the Montague Curling Rink after winning the Under 18 on the previous Monday. It was also the third year in a row for Schut winning the U16 Boy’s, while two members of the Ferguson foursome – Katie Shaw and Lexie Murray, were on last year’s Girl’s winning team. Cornwall’s Rachel MacLean team were girls’ runners-up, and MacLean won the girls’ Sportsmanship award.
PEI Credit Unions U18
Besides having the winning and finalist Boy’s teams and the winning (the Ferguson team are from Cornwall, Crapaud, and Charlottetown) and finalist Girl’s teams as club members, Cornwall members we were also the recipients of the Coaching and both Sportsmanship awards.
It took two tries, but the Mitchell Schut team came out winners over their Cornwall clubmates, skipped by Mitchell’s brother Devin, in the Provincial Under 18 Boy’s Curling Championship, sponsored by PEI Credit Unions, taking place at the Silver Fox in Summerside. Mitchell, who had won two of the three modified triple knockout sections, could have taken the title with a win in the first championship game, but lost after leading 6-1 after 5 ends when his brother came back with a deuce in the sixth, a stolen single in the seventh, and a deuce in the 8th to tie the game 6-all, and then went on to steal three points in the extra for a 9-6 win, forcing the afternoon deciding match.That game was tied at three at the fourth end break, but Mitchell scored a pair of triples in ends 5 and 7 and kept Devin to a single in six to bring the game to handshakes with a 9-4 final score. The Mitchell Schut team includes third Nick Johnston, second Liam Kelly, and lead Colin MacKenzie, with coaches Bill Hope and Lori Robinson,
The Lauren Ferguson rink from Cornwall, Crapaud, and Charlottetown edged Cornwall’s Emily Sanderson foursome by a 5-4 score to win the Girl’s division final, and advance to the 2018 Canadian Under-18 Boys and Girls Curling Championship, April 9-14 in St. Andrews NB. A steal in the 7th end gave Ferguson a 5-2 lead coming home. Sanderson scored a deuce in the final end, but needed a triple to tie. Sanderson would have needed to win twice today, while Ferguson, who won two out of the three section finals in the event, only needed to win once, and did it on the first try. Playing with the winning Ferguson rink were third Katie Shaw, second Alexis Burris and lead Lexie Murray, with coach David Murphy. Rounding out the Sanderson finalist team were third Emma Coffin, second stone Kaylee Stewart, and lead Anna Maria MacDonald, with coach Edgar Coffin.
Edgar Coffin, coach of the Emily Sanderson team from Cornwall, finalists in the Girl’s division, was presented with the Coaching award.
The Girl’s Sportsmanship award went to Meghan Sherren, second on the Sydney Howatt rink from Cornwall.
The Boy’s Sportsmanship award was presented to Nick Johnston, third on the winning Boy’s Mitchell Schut team.
Canada Games Curling Trials
The two boy’s teams for the finals next season here in Cornwall are the Mitchell Schut team from Cornwall, and Charlottetown’s Chase MacMillan rink, while the Lauren Ferguson team from Cornwall, Crapaud, and Charlottetown, and the Sydney Howatt foursome from Cornwall are the girl’s Training Teams for the finals.
Mixed Doubles
The Crapaud duo of Lauren Ferguson (also a Cornwall member) and Calvin Smith were the champions, while the U18 team of Sydney Howatt and Nick Johnston from Cornwall were runners-up.
Provincial Masters (60+)
The Ted MacFadyen rink from Summerside won the men’s, but the Bill Hope runner-up team got to compete in both the Maritime and Canadian Masters events. Cornwall’s Sandy Hope and Shirley Berry teams were the women’s winners and runners-up, respectively.
Provincial Men’s Tankard and Women’s Scotties
Cornwall was pleased to host both of these events, with our Lauren Lenentine rink finishing as runners-up in the Scotties.
Provincial Mixed
The Jamie Newson rink from Charlottetown won the event, but the Cornwall junior rink of Mitchell Schut, Sierra Clyke, Nick Johnston and Sydney Howatt, won the A section, and lost 3-2 to Newson in the C, before losing to Tyler MacKenzie in the semi-final.
PEI Pepsi Juniors (U21)
The Cornwall team of Lauren Lenentine, Kristie Rogers, Breanne Burgoyne, Rachel O’Connor, Pat Quilty (Coach) went undefeated to repeat as junior women’s champs, while the rink of Lauren Ferguson, Katie Shaw, Alexis Burris, Lexie Murray, and David Murphy (Coach) from Cornwall, Crapaud and Charlottetown were runners-up. The Cornwall team of Mitchell Schut, Nick Johnston, Liam Kelly, Colin MacKenzie, with Lori Robinson (coach) were junior men’s runners-up. Pat Quilty won the coaching award for women’s teams, while Alec Huestis from Cornwall’s Team Devin Schut and Lexie Murray from Team Ferguson won the Sportsmanship awards.
Provincial Stick
For the second time in their stick curling careers, Elaine Hughes and Etta Reid are the Ferguson-Logan Montague Funeral Home P.E.I. women’s stick curling champions. The Cornwall team defeated clubmates and defending champions, Gloria Clarke and Ruth Stavert, 5-4 in the championship final at the Western Community Curling Club. Another Cornwall team, Sterling Stratton and Barry Craswell, won the Open Division – their third win in four years.
Vogue Optical 55+ Games at Charlottetown
Stick: It’s no surprise that the Cornwall Curling Club won all the medals in the Stick Curling competition at the Vogue Optical 55+ Games, hosted by the Town of Stratford, with curling at the Charlottetown Curling Complex, considering their past results, and the fact that all the entries but one were from there. The Gold medals winners were the team of Vernon Chowan & Grant Leard in the Open (any combination of men and women) division, and the Ruth Stavert & Karen Fisher duo in the women’s.
Regular: The Cornwall Curling Club rinks skipped by Gloria Clarke and Barry Craswell won Gold and Silver, respectively, in the Mixed and Women’s division, with Clarke getting by Craswell 7-5 in the final. The Bronze medal skip, Shelley Ebbett, is also a Cornwall member.

For the second year in a row, the Red team won.The team who garnered the most points was the team of Shirley Berry, Brad Gardiner, Gloria Turner, and Nancy MacKinnon, while the top blue team was Paul Neima, Cathy Handren, Stephanie O’Keefe, and Steve Armsworthy. Marg Stewart won the draw to the button contest, while Donnie Weeks won a free membership in the reverse draw.

It was a successful season for the Wednesday Daytime League, with 16 teams in the main draw. This year’s winner was the team of Danny Kneabone, Karen Currie, Al MacCormac, and Roger DesRoches.
Wednesday Evening Ladder League
Round three: Paul Neima team won the “A” pool, sponsored by Wally’s Pharmasave, and the Ray Biagé rink going undefeated to win the “B”, sponsored by New Glasgow Lobster Suppers.
Round two: the Bill Hope rink, with only 1 loss, won the Water & Prince Corner Shop & Lobster Pound “A” Pool prizes, and the Josh McInnis rink, who are catching on to this sport fast, winning the prizes for the Lowther’s Snow Removal “B” Pool, with only 2 losses.
Round One: the Bill Hope rink won the “A” Pool, sponsored by Lowther’s Snow Removal, with a 6-1 win-loss record, and the Greg Groves team taking the “B” Pool, sponsored by Sam’s Cornwall Restaurant, also recording a half dozen wins and only one loss. Other members of Team Hope are Peter Murdoch, David Murphy, and Craig Mackie, while Donald Weeks, Marjorie Matthews, and Ken Monaghan round out the Groves rink.

Wendy’s U16 Developmental League
The Cruz Pineau rink from the Silver Fox in Summerside finished in first place with 82 points, just beating out Cornwall’s Emily Sanderson team, with 81.5. The Mitchell Schut foursome from Cornwall was third with 77 points, while the Lauren Ferguson squad from Crapaud, Cornwall and Charlottetown finished fourth overall, with 66.5 points.
