Another successful season completed at the Cornwall Curling Club!`

2015/2016 was another very successful season at the Cornwall Curling Club. A high point was certainly the winning of our first Canadian Championship.

Here are some of the highlights:

October

Drop-In curling (with costumes), and annual curling school and registration held.

Gordie Hermann passed away. Gordie, as a Cornwall village council member, was instrumental in deciding to build a curling club for the community. He then sat on the committee that met weekly to plan and implement the project, and then moved on to sit on the charter Board of Directors for the Club, and continued to curl until very recently.

U16 Developmental League starts up.

Club member Noah O’Connor gets married.

November

Longtime member Bob MacWilliams and his wife Doris receive sendoff as he departs for New Brunswick.

Cornwall’s Lisa Jackson rink wins Canadian Travelers Women’s Championship. This is Cornwall’s first-ever Canadian title in a Curling Canada event, and PEI’s first Travelers championship. They also recorded the first-ever eight-ender in ANY Curling Canada canadian championship!

Cornwall’s Lauren Lenentine, along with Alex MacFadyen, win our annual Mixed Doubles spiel.

Ted MacFadyen rink win our Masters Plus bonspiel. Cornwall’s Barry Craswell team are runners-up.

The Ice Queens women’s spiel was won by the team of Gloria Clarke, Elaine Hughes, Etta Reid and Carolyn Crockett.

The Lauren Lenentine rink were runners up to Chester Nova Scotia’s Mary Fay team at the Silver Fox Junior Bonspiel. Later in the season, the Fay team won the Canadian and World junior championships, while Fay skipped the Winter Youth Olympics (mixed) gold medal team.

Cornwall’s Chloé McCloskey participates in Canadian Mixed in Toronto.

Visually Impaired/Blind and Wheelchair curling get underway for the season, on Thursday evenings.

December

Carlene Peters wins Christmas Cheer draw.

Barry Craswell, Bryan Sutherland, Gloria Clarke, Grant Laird, and Joe Gill teams win 5 of the 6 prizes at 2nd annual Desjardins Financial Security Independent Network stick curling tournament.

Cornwall’s Sabrina Smith, along with Kyle Holland, are PEI’s Mixed Doubles champs.

Cornwall’s Mitchell Schut team wins division final, Alexis Burris team wins consolation match at Moncton Canada Games Dev’t spiel.

January

Our Icemaker Lance Lowther and his wife Phyllis celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at the Club.

Cornwall’s Devin and Mitchell Schut rinks participated in the Future Tankard developmental event.

At the Canadian Juniors in Stratford Ont., Cornwall’s Chloé McCloskey  won the women’s Ken Watson Sportsmanship award, as voted on by the players, while Aleya Quilty won the Balance Plus Fair Play award for the women’s lead position, as voted on by the officials.

The Matthew MacLean rink from O’Leary and Cornwall finished with a 3-6 (won-lost) record at the Canadian Juniors, while Cornwall’s Katie Fullerton team completed play at 4-5.
Sandy Hope rink wins PEI Masters Women’s title, while Myrna Sanderson team are runners-up.

André Gauthier rink wins Kenmac Energy club bonspiel.

Cornwall’s Alexis Burris team finishes in 1st place in the Future Scotties developmental event. Emma Coffin and Rachel MacLean teams also take part.

Mitchell Schut rink goes undefeated to win the Wendy’s U16 league at our Club.

Gloria Clarke wins Desjardins Financial Security Independent Network  $50.00 cash prize for “Come Try Our Game” (Stick Curling)

February
The Veronica Smith rink from the Crapaud and Cornwall curling clubs compiled an 8-1 record en-route to winning the Atelka P.E.I. Mixed Fours Provincial Curling Championship in Alberton. Team Smith will now advance to the 2017 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship, Nov. 14-19, 2016, at the Mariners Centre in Yarmouth, NS.

Cornwall’s Lauren Lenentine, Mitchell Schut rinks are provincial U16 champs. The Lenentine rink went undefeated in their championship at the Charlottetown Curling Complex, while the Schut team won the boy’s title by default. Cornwall’s Bailey O’Grady won the girl’s Sportsmanship award.

The Debbie Rhodenhizer and Angus Kennedy rinks won our Club’s Traveler’s ch’ship.
Cornwall hosts successful U18 Ch’ship. Cornwall’s Lauren Lenentine rink won the women’s event, with the Club’s Lauren Moerike team coming third. The Club’s Donald DeWolfe team were runners-up in the men’s event, with third place going to the young Mitchell Schut team, also from our club. Cornwall’s Emma Coffin won the women’s Sportsmanship award, as voted on by the players.

The UPEI Women’s team, skipped by Cornwall’s Veronica Smith, took part in the Atlantic University Curling Ch’ships, but their attempt to win their 4th-straight trip to the Nationals fell short.

Cornwall’s Stratton/Craswell and Clarke/Stavert duos repeat as PEI Stick champs.

Curling instruction provided to over 30 Newcomers with the aid of a grant under the Sport Partnership and Engagement Program, a project of the Sport Participation Bilateral which is jointly funded by the Province of PEI (Department of Health and Wellness) and the Federal Government (Canadian Heritage – Sport Canada). We partnered with the PEI Association for Newcomers to Canada for this initiative.

Second annual Glen Afton U13 funspiel held

March
Holland College Hurricanes, who played in our Tues. night league, participated in the CCAA ch’ships, and picked up a Fair Play award.

Cornwall’s Lauren Lenentine team, along with the Tyler Smith team win the Atlantic U18 Ch’ships at CFB Halifax

Cornwall hosts Maritime Stick Ch’ship. Cornwall ‘s Etta Reid/Myrna Craswell team defeated the 5 time champion team of Ruth Stavert and Gloria Clarke, also from Cornwall in the Women’s final, while a Nova Scotia rink won the Open event.

Cornwall hosted the Provincial Travelers Curling Club Ch’ship, won by the Ch’town men’s, and Western women’s teams.

Cornwall’s Rachel MacLean rink went undefeated to win the KFC U13 Ch’ship, edging their clubmates the Chase MacMillan rink 4-3 in the final.
Cornwall’s Mitchell Schut, Alexis Burris rinks were winners and runners-up, respectively in the Junior Mixed U16 Ch’ships, The Devin Schut team runners-up in U21.

April
Cornwall’s Sandy Hope rink participate in the Canadian Masters in the Annapolis Valley

PEI Brewing Co. Closing Spiel – blue won.
Paul Neima, Hank Kamphuis, Derek Gallant, and Gabe Taweel won the Loonie Draw, while Debby Sigsworth won a free one-night membership, and George Younker won the draw to the button contest.

Sabrina Smith participated in the Canadian Mixed Doubles in Saskatoon,and recorded a win over pre-tournament hometown favourite, Stephanie Lawton and Steve Laycock.

Thanks to all our Club members, coaches, staff, volunteers, and Board of Directors members for another successful season!
