Club Life

Many of you will remember the visit to our Club from Dr. Heather Mair of the University of Waterloo Department of Recreation and Leisure, at our 2007  Countryview Golf Closing Spiel (she is standing up at the back of this photo).

 Heather Mair

Heather was doing research for a paper on the impact of curling clubs in rural communities, and visited 18 clubs during her research. She has now published her paper, entitled “Club Life: Third place and Shared Leisure in Rural Canada”, which presents a day in the life of the (fictitious) Walnut Lake Curling Club, and then draws some conclusions about the role that curling clubs play in small communities.

I am sure you will recognize a bit of our Club in the story of life at the Walnut Lake club, and invite you to read her paper, which you can find on Danny Lamoureux’s blog at the following link:

Danny is the Manager of Curling Club Development for the Canadian Curling Association.
