The 2018 Travelers Curling Club Championship will be staged Nov. 19-24 at the Miramichi Curling Club in Miramichi, N.B., with fourteen men’s and 14 women’s teams from the 10 provinces, three territories and Northern Ontario taking part.
This will be the 10th edition of the Travelers Curling Club Championship. Cornwall was co-host of the national event back in its second season, and the Cornwall women’s team of skip Lisa Jackson, third Carolyn Coulson, second Melissa Morrow, and lead Jodi Murphy won the national women’s Travelers in 2015.
PEI will be represented this time by the Debbie Rhodenhizer rink from here in Cornwall on the Women’s side, and the Jamie Newson squad from the Silver Fox in Summerside on the Men’s. The Cornwall women had an amazing finish at the provincials, winning two tiebreakers, the semi-final, and then two final games, both in extra ends, to take the provincial women’s title.
There will be a lineup change on the women’s team, as lead Cindy Nicholson is out with a knee injury, and Karen Currie will be curling in her place. On the men’s side, skip Jamie Newson sat out the Canadian Mixed championship due to an ankle injury (he went instead as coach), but is currently scheduled to compete in the Travelers. Andrew MacDougall will also be attending as an alternate for the team. Looking at the other teams, Alison Griffin, who was on PEI’s 2016 Travelers Women’s Championship team, is back at the national Travelers again, competing for Nunavut.

The PEI women are leaving for the Travelers on Sunday 18th, Their first game is on Monday the 19th at 3 pm against the Yukon.
Note that, while many things are paid for at the Nationals, the PEI women have also been busy fundraising. Each year all teams participating take part in the “For the Love of Curling” fundraiser, which creates opportunities for youth curlers across Canada. The PEI women had a booth at the Crapaud Tractor Pull Championships this past summer, selling baked potatoes, popcorn, water, and coffee, had a yard sale, and collected bottles. Debbie also knit mittens (some went as far as Yellowknife!). They also have to provide a silent auction item valued at $150, and may be doing some additional fundraising for that.
