Cornwall’s Team Ferguson picks up a win in Windsor, but doesn’t advance to the 8 am money round

The quarter-final round goes at 8 this morning at the Tim Hortons Spitfire Arms Cashspiel, with 20 women’s teams competing for their share of a $14,000 purse, at the Windsor Curling Club in Windsor NS. PEI’s Suzanne Birt rink has gone through round-robin play undefeated in their pool with a 4-0 record, and will take on Nova Scotia’s Tanya Hilliard rink in the quarters. Birt handed Hilliard her only round-robin loss, by a 6-2 score.

Team Birt

Also undefeated is the Meg Balsdon rink from Woodstock ON, who play Sudbury’s Kira Brunton foursome (2-2). Defending champion Sylvie Quillian of Curl Moncton takes on 2016 champ Colleen Jones of Halifax in another quarter-final matchup. Both teams are at 3-1 win-loss. The last quarter-final pairing sees the Jill Brothers rink, which includes Islander Erin Carmody at third stone, take on another Halifax squad, skipped by Julie McEvoy. Both teams are at 3-1. McEvoy won this event in 2017.

The semi-finals go at 11 am, with the final taking place at 2 pm. $4000 will go to the winning team, while the other finalist will go home with $2000. Third and fourth place receive $1500 each, while the remaining teams in the championship round each get $1000.

Team Ferguson, between draws

The Lauren Ferguson rink from here at the Cornwall Curling Club and the Amanda Power squad from Charlottetown, which includes former Cornwall players Breanne Burgoyne and Aleya Quilty finished out of the money round at 1-3 and 0-4, respectively. Team Ferguson had the opportunity to play some of the biggest names in Atlantic Canada, picking up a 10-6 win over Canada Games bronze medallist Cally Moore of Lower Sackville, and taking on former event winners Colleen Jones and Julie McEvoy, as well as playing Mary-Anne Arsenault, Jones’ former teammate on her two-time world championship team.
