It wasn’t the town of Altona’s original plan, but the community has finally had a chance to officially celebrate a local curling team’s success on the world stage.

In February, Team Zacharias captured the gold medal at the Women’s World Junior Curling Championships in Russia by defeating South Korea in the final.

Mayor Al Friesen says a community celebration was being planned for MacKenzie Zacharias, her sister Emily, Karlee Burgess, Lauren Lenentine and alternate Rachel Erickson in April, but the COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of the event.

Town council still wanted to recognize the team’s accomplishment in some meaningful way and came up with the idea of splashing their images on one of the town’s highway billboards.

That billboard sign, located north of Altona on Highway 14, is now up for motorists to see on their approach to the community.
