The team of Lauren and Alex MacFadyen from the Silver Fox Curling Club in Summerside have won the first of three qualifying games for the championship round at the 7-team 2021 PEI Mixed Doubles Curling Championship, which got underway Friday and concludes Sunday here at the Cornwall Curling Club. The duo won all three of their Friday games, taking their opener 10-1 over the Colin MacKenzie/Alison Griffin rink from the host Club, then defeating the defending champion Jenny and Ed White pair from the Silver Fox in Summerside 8-3, and going on to win the “A” section qualifier 11-2 in six ends over the Cornwall rink of Amy Spence and Jack MacFadyen.

With this modified triple knockout draw, winning teams drop down to play in the next section. If a team wins all three sections, they will take the championship without the 2-game Sunday championship round. A team winning two sections will advance to both championship round games and win the title if they take either game, while their opponent, the winner of the other section, would have to win both.
Team MacFadyen will play Cornwall’s Nancy Milton and Calvin Smith squad, who have a 2-1 win-loss record, at 9 am Saturday in a “B” semi-final, with the winner advancing to the “B” qualifier game at 12:15 pm. The other “B” semi sees Team White (1-1) take on the Spence/MacFadyen duo (2-1).
The Cornwall team of Clara Jack and Brayden Snow play their MacKenzie/Griffin clubmates at 9 am Saturday. Both teams have two losses, so only the winner will continue on in this triple-knockout event. The Crapaud duo of Terri Wood and Alan Inman also have two losses, and are in a “must-win” game at 12:15 pm Saturday.
The “C” semis go at 3:30 pm Saturday, with the “C” final at Sunday morning at 9. The Championship Round, if needed, goes at 12:15 and, if necessary, 3:30 pm on Sunday.
The winning team will advance to the 2021 Home Hardware Canadian Mixed Doubles Curling Championship, March 18-25 at the Markin MacPhail Centre, in Calgary, AB.
Please note that no spectators are allowed in the facility for this event due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Explanation for Championship Round (Games A and B):
1. If one team wins all three qualifying games*: Championship Round is not required.
2. If one team wins two qualifying games*:
They play in both A and B (and win the event if they win either game).
The other section winner plays in A and has to win to advance to B.
3. If there are three separate winners: the team that played in the most qualifying games* advances to B, and the other winners play off in A.
If there is a tie in the number of qualifying games* played, then the team that qualified earliest goes to B and the other two teams play off in A.
*Qualifying games are in yellow on the schedule
