Cornwall hosting both Maritime and Canadian 2 person stick ch’ships next season

There’s been a lot of interest in doubles curling recently, especially with Canada winning an Olympic Gold Medal in Mixed Doubles. Here at the Cornwall Curling Club, we’ve been playing 2-person curling for years, with our very popular Stick Curling league. And we’re good at it too, having won lots of Maritime stick championships, as well as the Canadian title (both divisions), on home ice, when we hosted the Canadian Championship, back in 2013.

As you may have heard at our Annual General Meeting on Friday, both the Maritime and the Canadian 2 person stick curling championships are returning to our Club next season, with the Maritime, which we last hosted in 2016, taking place from March 15-17 2019., and the  Canadian championship being held from March 31 to April 3rd.  For entry details for the Canadians, visit canadianstickcurling.ca

We’ll be looking for volunteers as these events approach!

AGM Highlights: Another successful season for the Cornwall Curling Club

Friday evening’s Annual General Meeting highlighted another successful season here at the Cornwall Curling Club. Here’s a summary.

Financial

The Club continues to be in great financial shape, with a small dues increase and an increase of over $7000 in Pro Shop sales giving the Club a net profit of $5,625, offsetting last year’s loss of $4234 despite increases in salaries due to cost of living and to an increase in the provincial minimum wage. 50X50 profits were double last year’s, and our hosting of the Scotties/Tankard brought in $2270 in admission revenues.. The Club will be starting next season with approximately $22,000 in the bank.

Here are some other highlights of the past season. The success of our championship teams has been mentioned previously.

Bonspiels, Volunteers

A number of well-organized and successful bonspiels were held this past season, with help from our many volunteers.

Draws

On the daytime curling side, the Wednesday league had a full complement of 16 teams using four ices in the morning as well as four in the afternoon. The Daytime Curlers, as a result of their fundraising efforts, were able to buy additional cutlery for the Club and pay half on the new wireless microphone system.

Evening draws went well, too, while the Junior program reported 35 members registered.

Sponsors

It was a banner year for sponsorship, with all draws and bonspiels sponsored, and all ice house signs sold. The KFC sign will be coming down by fall (the local franchise has new owners), but another sign has been sold to take its place.

Bylaw Amendment

The Bylaw amendment announced for the meeting was carried successfully after several changes.

Upcoming

Looking forward to next year, we will be hosting  both the Maritime  and the Canadian Stick Championships, the Provincial Under 18, which now leads to a national championship, and the provincial Canada Winter Games Selection Finals.

With help from Curl PEI, will also be piloting a 10 week daytime curlers Learn to Curl program, modelled after the successful evening one. To accommodate increasing demand for the new Olympic sport of Mixed Doubles curling, as demonstrated by the two sold-out bonspiels we held this year, a Mixed Doubles  league is planned for Sunday evening at 6:30.. The Under 16 developmental Junior League, held on selected Saturdays, is slated to return on Oct. 20.

Election of Officers

Alan Mason, Kimberley MacDonald, Chris Creighton and Darlene Howlett have completed their terms of office.
Angela Sanderson, who took the season off due to an injury, will be returning to the Board, along with new Board members Lacey Gallant, Chris MacDougall, and Peter Murdoch.

Open Discussion

It was noted that the current lease with our landlords, the Town of Cornwall, is up December 31. A favourable renewal is anticipated.

There was some discussion about curling etiquette. The Board will come up with ideas to better educate curlers on this.

The five rock rule has been approved by the World Curling Federation, and is expected to be included in the Curling Canada rulebook for next season.

The meeting adjourned at 8:20 pm.

Cornwall juniors attend Future Elites

(Sport PEI) Thirty-four athletes from across the province, from different sports and different ages, and including an impressive number of curlers, many from the Cornwall Curling Club, attended Sport PEI’s seventh Future Elites event. The athletes all have one goal: get to the next level.

Future Elites. Curlers are mainly in the left half of the photo.

The group started off the day with Meagan Ferguson from Mind Matters, and looked at getting in the
zone. This was followed by fitness testing similar to “RBC Training Ground”. This group really stepped up to the plate and broke three of Synergy’s testing records.

Before lunch,  the athletes met USports & Canadian Jr. Women’s Wrestling Champion Hannah Taylor.  She told her of her journey from PEI to standing on top of the National podium.  Her message was, ” Always be the best version of yourself, in sport and life.”

After lunch, the group had a workout and a learning session on how to lift, push and pull.  Mark Arendz was a surprise guest and the athletes heard about his amazing Paralympic success, coming home with six medals.

Thanks to the 2009 Canada Games Legacy Fund for supporting Future Elites.

Another great year for the Cornwall Curling Club!

Another season has wrapped up at the Cornwall Curling Club, with our U18 teams returning from their nationals in St. Andrews New Brunswick on the weekend. It’s been another great year for our teams, players, and coaches with lots of championships and awards won, including our first member ever to be on a World Championship team! Here’s a wrapup of the 2017-2018 season:

World championships

Lauren Lenentine, left, accompanied Team Jones as an alternate at the world junior championships in early March and will play for the team fulltime in 2018. (Curling Canada)

After her provincial Junior win, Cornwall’s Lauren Lenentine was chosen to be Alternate player on the Katelyn Jones Canadian Junior championship team from Nova Scotia at the World Championships, which went on to win the World title. Later it was announced that she would be joining the team for the 2018-2019 season, replacing a player who has aged out. She will begin competing with them at the end of April when they travel to Calgary for the Champions Cup Grand Slam of Curling from April 24-29.

Team Lenentine also announced that Kristie Rogers will be moving to Newfoundland and Labrador to attend Memorial University, and will be continuing to play Juniors there.

Canadian championships:

Cornwall member Lauren Ferguson competed in the Canadian Mixed Doubles in Leduc Alberta, picking up a win against John Epping and Dana Ferguson and playing some of the world’s best, including Jennifer Jones/Brent Laing, Jocelyn Peterman, and Val Sweeting.

Canadian Juniors

The Lauren Lenentine rink had a great start, winning their first five games in the round robin, and heading to the playoffs at 5-1. but didn’t do so well in the championship round, finishing with a 5-5 win-loss record.

Canadian Boys and Girls Under 18’s in St. Andrews NB.

Team Ferguson from Cornwall, Crapaud, and Charlottetown went 3-3 win-loss, just missing the playoffs and competing in the Mixed Doubles, where David Murphy got to coach the Gold Medal team, Lauren Ferguson played on the Silver Medal team, and Lexie Murray competed in the Bronze Medal game. Cornwall’s Team Mitchell Schut had some very close games, but didn’t pick up a win in the round robin. Colin MacKenzie from Team Schut won the Fair Play award for boy’s leads.

Everest Canadian Seniors in Stratford Ont.

PEI was represented by the Cornwall teams skipped by Shirley Berry and Bill Hope. They didn’t make the championship round, but Berry finished with an overall record of 4-5,  and Hope went 3-6.

2018 Coastland Engineering and Surveying Canadian Masters Curling Championship in Surrey/White Rock BC.

Team PEI women, skipped by Cornwall’s Sandy Hope, made the championship pool in the event, finishing with a 5-4 win-loss record overall, while the PEI men, skipped by Cornwall’s Bill Hope, had a combined two wins and seven losses in the round robin and seeding pool. Team PEI’s Craig Mackie won the men’s sportsmanship award.

Regional Championships

Maritime Masters

The Bill Hope rink won the men’s division of the  Maritime Masters Curling Championships at the Bluenose Curling Club in New Glasgow NS. The team normally includes Craig Mackie, but Edgar Coffin substituted for Mackie, who had work commitments, at this event.

Maritime Stick

The Gloria Clarke and Ruth Stavert duo were runners-up in the women’s event, at the Maritime Stick in Chester NS.

Provincial Championships

Travelers

Cornwall’s Debbie Rhodenhizer rink, which includes Nancy MacFadyen, Sandra Sobey, and Cindy Nicholson, definitely wins the “Extra Effort” award this year, winning two tiebreakers, the semi-final, and then two final games (both in extra ends) against previously-undefeated Melissa Morrow and her rink from the Silver Fox in Summerside. Morrow was a member of the 2015 Travelers Canadian Championship rink, out of Cornwall (our 1st Canadian championship at a Curling Canada event). Team Rhodenhizer will now move on to the nationals at the Miramichi Curling Club in Miramichi New Brunswick, from November 19 to 24, 2018. The Cornwall men’s team, skipped by Garth Cudmore, went 1-5.

U13 held here at Cornwall

Ella Lenentine, from the host club, skipped the B division championship rink with a high-scoring win over the Nate MacRae foursome from Charlottetown. Team Ella Lenentine includes third Ashlyn Shaw, second Erika Pater, and lead Kacey Gauthier. Robbie Lenentine was coaching.

U16
It was two championships in six days for both Mitchell Schut from the Cornwall Curling Club and Lauren Ferguson from the Charlottetown, Cornwall and Crapaud clubs, capturing the Under 16 championships on a Sunday afternoon at the Montague Curling Rink after winning the Under 18 on the previous Monday. It was also the third year in a row for Schut winning the U16 Boy’s, while two members of the Ferguson foursome – Katie Shaw and Lexie Murray, were on last year’s Girl’s winning team. Cornwall’s Rachel MacLean team were girls’ runners-up, and MacLean won the girls’ Sportsmanship award.

PEI Credit Unions U18
Besides having the winning and finalist  Boy’s teams and the winning (the Ferguson team are from Cornwall, Crapaud, and Charlottetown) and finalist Girl’s teams as club members, Cornwall members we were also the recipients of the Coaching and both Sportsmanship awards.

It took two tries, but the Mitchell Schut team came out winners over their Cornwall clubmates, skipped by Mitchell’s brother Devin, in the Provincial Under 18 Boy’s Curling Championship, sponsored by PEI Credit Unions, taking place at the Silver Fox in Summerside. Mitchell, who had won two of the three modified triple knockout sections, could have taken the title with a win in the first championship game, but lost after leading 6-1 after 5 ends when his brother came back with a deuce in the sixth, a stolen single in the seventh, and a deuce in the 8th to tie the game 6-all, and then went on to steal three points in the extra for a 9-6 win, forcing the afternoon deciding match. That game was tied at three at the fourth end break, but Mitchell scored a pair of triples in ends 5 and 7 and kept Devin to a single in six to bring the game to handshakes with a 9-4 final score. The Mitchell Schut team includes third Nick Johnston, second Liam Kelly, and lead Colin MacKenzie, with coaches Bill Hope and Lori Robinson,

The Lauren Ferguson rink from Cornwall, Crapaud, and Charlottetown edged Cornwall’s Emily Sanderson foursome by a 5-4 score to win the Girl’s division final, and advance to the  2018 Canadian Under-18  Boys and Girls Curling Championship, April 9-14 in St. Andrews NB. A steal in the 7th end gave Ferguson a 5-2 lead coming home. Sanderson scored a deuce in the final end, but needed a triple to tie. Sanderson would have needed to win twice today, while Ferguson, who won two out of the three section finals in the event, only needed to win once, and did it on the first try. Playing with the winning Ferguson rink were third Katie Shaw, second Alexis Burris and lead Lexie Murray, with coach David Murphy. Rounding out the Sanderson finalist team were third Emma Coffin, second stone Kaylee Stewart, and lead Anna Maria MacDonald, with coach Edgar Coffin.

Edgar Coffin, coach of the Emily Sanderson team from Cornwall,  finalists in the Girl’s division, was presented with the Coaching award.

The Girl’s Sportsmanship award went to Meghan Sherren, second on the Sydney Howatt rink from Cornwall.

The Boy’s Sportsmanship award was presented to Nick Johnston, third on the winning Boy’s Mitchell Schut team.

Canada Games Curling Trials

The two boy’s teams for the finals next season here in Cornwall are the Mitchell Schut team from Cornwall, and Charlottetown’s Chase MacMillan rink, while the Lauren Ferguson team from Cornwall, Crapaud, and Charlottetown, and the Sydney Howatt foursome from Cornwall are the girl’s Training Teams for the finals.

Mixed Doubles

The Crapaud duo of Lauren Ferguson (also a Cornwall member) and Calvin Smith were the champions, while the U18 team of Sydney Howatt and Nick Johnston from Cornwall were runners-up.

Provincial Masters (60+)

The Ted MacFadyen rink from Summerside won the men’s, but the Bill Hope runner-up team got to compete in both the Maritime and Canadian Masters events. Cornwall’s Sandy Hope and Shirley Berry teams were the women’s winners and runners-up, respectively.

Provincial Men’s Tankard and Women’s Scotties

Cornwall was pleased to host both of these events, with our Lauren Lenentine rink finishing as runners-up in the  Scotties.

Provincial Mixed

The Jamie Newson rink from Charlottetown won the event, but the Cornwall junior rink of Mitchell Schut, Sierra Clyke, Nick Johnston and Sydney Howatt, won the A section, and lost 3-2 to Newson in the C, before losing to Tyler MacKenzie in the semi-final.

PEI Pepsi Juniors (U21)

The Cornwall team of Lauren Lenentine, Kristie Rogers, Breanne Burgoyne, Rachel O’Connor, Pat Quilty (Coach) went undefeated to repeat as junior women’s champs, while the rink of Lauren Ferguson, Katie Shaw, Alexis Burris, Lexie Murray, and David Murphy (Coach) from Cornwall, Crapaud and Charlottetown were runners-up. The Cornwall team of Mitchell Schut, Nick Johnston, Liam Kelly, Colin MacKenzie, with Lori Robinson (coach) were junior men’s runners-up. Pat Quilty won the coaching award for women’s teams, while  Alec Huestis from Cornwall’s Team Devin Schut and Lexie Murray from Team Ferguson won the Sportsmanship awards.

Provincial Stick

For the second time in their stick curling careers, Elaine Hughes and Etta Reid are the Ferguson-Logan Montague Funeral Home P.E.I. women’s stick curling champions. The Cornwall team defeated clubmates and defending champions, Gloria Clarke and Ruth Stavert, 5-4 in the championship final at the Western Community Curling Club. Another Cornwall team, Sterling Stratton and Barry Craswell, won the Open Division – their third win in four years.

Vogue Optical 55+ Games at Charlottetown

Stick: It’s no surprise that the Cornwall Curling Club won all the medals in the Stick Curling competition at the Vogue Optical 55+ Games, hosted by the Town of Stratford, with curling at the Charlottetown Curling Complex, considering their past results, and the fact that all the entries but one were from there. The Gold medals winners were the team of Vernon Chowan & Grant Leard in the Open (any combination of men and women) division, and the Ruth Stavert & Karen Fisher duo in the women’s.

Regular: The Cornwall Curling Club rinks skipped by Gloria Clarke and Barry Craswell won Gold and Silver, respectively, in the Mixed and Women’s division, with Clarke getting by Craswell 7-5 in the final. The Bronze medal skip, Shelley Ebbett, is also a Cornwall member.

Seniors (50+)

The Bill Hope rink from the Cornwall Curling Club, which includes third Craig Mackie, second David Murphy, and lead Peter Murdoch, are the 2018 PEI Senior Men’s champs.

The Shirley Berry rink from the Cornwall Curling Club went undefeated with a 5-0 win-loss record, sweeping all three modified triple knockout sections in the five-team Senior Women’s event, making a championship round unnecessary.

NS sweeps Gold at U18 Ch’ships, Lauren Ferguson’s coach wins Gold, she takes the Silver in Mixed Doubles (Curling Canada)

SAINT ANDREWS, N.B. — An already amazing season for Nova Scotia youth curling got even better on Saturday night at the W.C. O’Neill Arena Complex.

Nova Scotia teams claimed both gold medals at the 2018 Canadian Under 18 Boys and Girls Curling Championships — the second straight year one Member Association has swept both the girls and boys titles after Northern Ontario did it last year in Moncton.

Those gold medals will nicely complement the gold medals captured by Kaitlyn Jones’s Halifax women’s team at the 2018 New Holland Canadian Junior Championships in Shawinigan, Que., and the 2018 World Junior Championships in Aberdeen Scotland.

Graeme Weagle team, with PEI’s David Murphy, coach of the Gold Medal Mixed Doubles team on the left

Graeme Weagle’s Nova Scotia boys team from Chester won the boys final 10-6 over Alberta’s Ryan Jacques (Edmonton), while Isabelle Ladouceur’s Lower Sackville team prevailed 4-3 over Saskatchewan’s Skylar Ackerman (Moose Jaw) in the girls final.

Nova Scotia (Weagle was backed up by vice-skip/last-rock thrower Owen Purcell, second Jeffrey Meagher, lead Scott Weagle and coach Anthony Purcell) was 3-2 in the round robin before rattling off four straight playoff victories.

“Being our first national championship competition, we struggled a bit at the start to get used to the ice and the atmosphere, but by the playoffs, we kind of adjusted to it and settled in, and we focused,” said Weagle. “The guys brought their ‘A’ game today.”

That was evident in the early ends; Nova Scotia opened the game with a deuce, and held Alberta to a single in the second.

In the third, Nova Scotia simply made eight perfect shots and took advantage of key misses from the Albertans to put five on the scoreboard — capped by Purcell making a delicate outturn tap to remove a partially frozen Alberta stone and hold the shooter.

“It kind of came out of nowhere, to be honest,” said Weagle. “We were thinking that maybe we’d have a shot at two or three if he makes something good. But the five really came out of nowhere.”

Nova Scotia added a steal of three in the fourth and it was just a matter of time before the gold medals were draped around the Bluenosers’ necks.

“It feels amazing, it’s unbelievable — it’s a dream of mine,” said Weagle. “The guys worked so hard, and we’re pretty proud of ourselves.”

Interestingly, the Weagle team plays out of the same Chester Curling Club that produced Mary Fay’s 2016 Canadian and World Junior Women’s championship team.

“When I saw Mary Fay win a national title, I was like, wow,” said Weagle. “From a small town like Chester, to produce a national (and then world) champion, it’s crazy. And to now be a national champion is even crazier.”

Jacques was backed up by vice-skip Dustin Mikush, second Gabriel Dyck, lead Michael Henricks and coach Bernie Panich.

Isabelle Ladouceur rink

In the women’s game, back-to-back deuces from Nova Scotia turned the game around and propelled Ladouceur, vice-skip Emilie Proulx, second Kate Callaghan, lead Makayla Harnish, alternate Elsa Nauss and coach Brian Rafuse to victory.

Saskatchewan blanked the first three ends before cracking a deuce in the fourth. But Nova Scotia came out strong after the fourth-end break, tying the game with a deuce in the fifth end, and then stealing two in the sixth.

“We started to be aggressive, and it obviously worked out,” said Ladouceur. “We definitely made some nice shots; Saskatchewan made some amazing shots, too, but it just worked out in our favour, with a little bit of luck.

“It feels fantastic; my team has been working for this all season, and we’re just really excited right now.”

What’s the secret to Nova Scotia’s recent run of success in youth curling? It’s pretty simple, suggested Ladouceur.

“We know that we want to win, and we’re willing to work hard,” she said. “Everyone here in Nova Scotia is trying to be the best, so we have a lot of hard workers in our province.”

Defending Canadian U-18 boys champ Jacob Horgan of Northern Ontario returned to the podium as his Sudbury team (vice-skip Max Cull, second Nicholas Bissonnette, lead Shane Robinson and coach Gerry Horgan) won the boys bronze medal, 4-1 over Newfoundland/Labrador’s Ryan McNeil Lamswood of St. John’s (vice-skip Coleton Vriesendorp, second James Trickett, lead Alex Phillips and coach Laura Phillips).

In the girls bronze-medal game, Alberta’s Ryleigh Bakker (Calgary) scored three in the eighth end for a 5-3 win over Ontario’s Madelyn Warriner (Listowel).

Bakker was backed up by vice-skip Hannah Phillips, second Rhiley Quinn, lead Hannah Airey, alternate Elysa Crough and coach Allison Earl. The Ontario team was rounded out by vice-skip Sarah Bailey, second Brianne Donegan, lead Shannon Warriner and coach Bruce Cox.

Meanwhile, the doubles competition wrapped up on Saturday for players who didn’t take part in the playoffs.

In the gold medal-game, featuring a pair of mixed teams, the duo of Jaycee Terrick (Manitoba) and Braden Fleischhacker (Saskatchewan), with coach David Murphy (P.E.I.) was a 4-2 winner over Lauren Ferguson (P.E.I.) and Troy Chong (B.C.) with coach Dave Trickett (Newfoundland/Labrador).

The all-girl duo of Melodie Forsythe (N.B. Host) and Alexa Smallwood (Yukon), along with coach Verne Anderson (Saskatchewan) won the bronze medal with a 5-3 victory over the mixed duo of Lexie Murray (P.E.I.) and Jayden Bindig (Saskatchewan) with coach Bryan Miki (B.C.)

Also on Saturday, the Fair Play Awards (as voted on by the umpires) were handed out:

Ferguson 1-3, Schut 0-4 at Canadian U18, Ferguson game on livestream at 10 am

The PEI teams each had a pair of close losses on Wednesday at the Canadian Under 18 Boys and Girls Curling Championships in St. Andrews New Brunswick, with Team Lauren Ferguson sitting at 1-3 win-loss, and Team Mitchell Schut at 0-4 going into the final day of round robin play.

Ferguson lost to New Brunswick’s Erica Cluff Wednesday afternoon in a conservatively-played game until the last two ends, with NB leading 4-2 after six. Ferguson then stole a triple to go ahead 5-4 coming home without hammer, but Cluff took four points in the final end for an 8-5 win and a 3-1 win-loss record.

PEI had a 2-1 lead at the 4th end break in their game against Saskatchewan, who scored a deuce in the fifth to pull ahead by one. PEI tied the game with a single in six. Saskatchewan blanked the seventh to keep last rock advantage coming home, and scored four points in the eighth for a 7-3 win, improving their record to 3-1.

Team Ferguson has two games today, with their 10 am game against the Northwest Territories livestreamed by Bell Aliant TV1 at player.communitylive.ca/Player/Player/183.

Their final round robin game is at 2 pm, against undefeated (4-0) Ontario.

Team Schut was leading 4-3 after six ends in their game against Liam Marin and his Saint John NB team, but a stolen deuce in seven put NB ahead by one. PEI forced an extra end with a single in eight, but NB won 6-5 with a single in the extra, and have a 2-2 record.

Schut’s low-scoring evening match was against Ryan McNeil Lamswood from Newfoundland and Labrador, with the 1st two ends blanked, and NL picking up singles in 3 and 4 to lead 2-0 at the break. PEI got on the board with a single in five, but NL picked up singles in ends six and eight for a 4-1 win and a 3-1 win-loss record.

PEI concludes round robin play at 10 this morning against BC (0-3), skipped by Dawson Ballard out of Vancouver.

Quebec and Ontario women continue to roll undefeated through the round robin, with the 2017 champions from Northern Ontario dominating on the men’s side.

The top four teams in each pool will move on to an eight-team championship double-knockout playoff round beginning on Friday.

The playoff round will determine the four men’s and four women’s teams that will compete in the Olympic-style semifinals on Saturday, April 14, at 1:30 p.m. AT. The semifinal winners will play for gold while the losers will play for bronze at 6 p.m. AT the same day.

The teams that don’t make the playoffs will take part in a mixed doubles competition.

Reds dominate with repeat win at Your Independent Grocer Closing Spiel

Well, another closing spiel has wrapped up, The Leary’s Independent Grocer Red vs. Blue Spiel came to an end on Saturday with a victory for the Red team!  Using the Skins format again this year, the Friday night draw ended with the Red Team ahead by only a small margin.  The Red Team overtook the Blue team in the end, walking away with $281,000 and that left the Blue team with $227,000.

Throughout the weekend there were a few ways to earn bonus points. Friday night trivia was had and the Reds won, winning an extra $2000 for their Team. Saturday morning a game of Left, Right Centre was played with again the Red Team picking up another $1000!

Sudoku was played in the afternoon and the Blue Team pulled out the win in this challenge and
made $5000.

Paul Neima and Gloria Clarke (Blue team) were a whiz at Sudoku!

The keen eye of a few of the Blue Team members earned them an extra $4000 points! They cleaned up our Club by capturing the wanted and bringing them in for their just rewards.

Hmmm – is that a “Wanted” poster for Lorianne Davies beside her daughter??
Unfortunately, Megan was busy when she arrived, and did not get the reward!

After lunch was a Draw to the Button 50/50 contest with the winner Marg Stewart taking home $65.00 and bragging rights.

Marg Stewart

The Reverse Draw for a Club membership was held again this year and Donnie Weeks was the big winner.

Donnie Weeks

A prize was awarded to our best-dressed winner Debby Sigsworth of the Blue Team.

Debby Sigsworth

There was no shortage of food on the weekend, Friday night curlers were treated to lots of finger foods as well as entertainment from the duo Undertow (with help from Angus Davies on one number!)

Undertow with Angus Davies (left)

Saturday some of our own club members provided muffins, sweet loaves and biscuits for breakfast and lunch was barbecued  burgers, hot dogs and sausages.

President O’Sullivan (right), with co-organizer Laurie Kelly, picking up their Red team prize

After the last of the stones were thrown for the year, our Club President presented the prizes and thanked organizers, members, club staff, and all our many volunteers!  He said that this had been a great season, and invited everyone to attend the Golf Tournament.

1st prize was awarded to our Spiel champs, taking the first place for Team Red, the Shirley Berry team, who were given the first pick from the table, then to the highest amount of Skins being won by the Blue Team — by the Paul Neima rink.

Closing Spiel Red team with the most points – Team Berry (L-R): Gloria Turner, Brad Gardiner, Archie MacKinnon, Shirley Berry

Closing Spiel Blue Team with the most points (L-R): Cathy Handren, Paul Neima, Stephanie O’Keefe. Missing: Steve Armsworthy

Then all other Red teams were called up, in order of Skins they had won, to choose from the prize table. Some of the top Blue teams also received prizes.

You can view photos of all the winning teams over at our event photo gallery: Click to view.

When the last of the prizes were handed out members went upstairs for a hot roast beef dinner with all the fixings, provided by caterer Alan Carmichael.

Laurie and I would like to extend a special thank you to Ray and Barb Biagé for doing up the Teams & Draws for this event we know Draw Master is not an easy Job!

Also thanks to our Banker, Carlene Peters — nothing got by her!

Banker Carlene carefully verifying the Sudoku numbers

As always there are many thanks to pass along and in fear of forgetting someone, we would like to just thank all those who helped out even if you didn’t think what you did was a big job it was to us as organizers. All the little things really add up to something Big!  So a big Thank you to all our Volunteers!!! Lastly to our sponsor Leary’s Independent Grocer  — it’s great to have your support — thanks so much!!!

We hope everyone enjoys their summer off and look forward to doing it all over again next year!

Canada’s top up-and-coming curlers are playing for national championships for a second straight year in the province of New Brunswick, following a successful debut last April in Moncton. The 2018 Canadian Under-18 Boys and Girls Curling Championships are being staged in Saint Andrews, N.B., starting this evening and running through Saturday.

PEI is represented by our U18 provincial champs, the Mitchell Schut boy’s rink from the Cornwall Curling Club and the Lauren Ferguson girl’s team from the Cornwall, Crapaud, and Charlottetown curling clubs,

The event, for players ages 17 and under as of June 30, 2017, is being staged at the W.C. O’Neill Arena Complex, using both a hockey arena and the three-sheet Heather Curling Club, which is part of the complex, and will feature teams from 13 Member Associations in each gender (Nunavut did not enter teams, while the Yukon did not enter a boys team).

At the inaugural Canadian Under-18 Championships last year in Moncton, Northern Ontario teams swept both gold medals.

On the boy’s side, Jacob Horgan’s team (vice-skip Max Cull, second Nicholas Bissonnette, lead Shane Robinson, coach Gerry Horgan) from Sudbury is back intact to defend its title, while there will be a new girls team from Northern Ontario, skipped by Sudbury’s Bella Croisier. Sudbury’s Kira Brunton claimed gold last year.

And while many of the players will be unfamiliar to curling fans across Canada, some last names will be very familiar.

On the girl’s side, Team B.C. from Vernon is skipped by Jaelyn Cotter, the daughter of seven-time Tim Hortons Brier participant Jim Cotter, who is coaching the team.

B.C.’s boy’s team, skipped by Dawson Ballard and hailing from New Westminster and Coquitlam, also has some championship bloodlines. Second Joshua  Miki is the son of Bryan Miki (who coaches the team); Bryan played second on Greg McAulay’s team that won the 2000 Brier and world men’s championships.

Round-robin competition at both facilities will begin Monday at 6 p.m. (all times Atlantic).

Reds have teeny tiny lead at Closing Spiel

The Your Independent Grocery Closing Spiel got underway on Friday evening, with all 20 teams seeing action, When the dust (or is it ice crystals?) settled, the Red team had a very slim lead in Skins and trivia dollars earned over the BLUE team – $58,000 to $42,000 – a lead that Blue should be able to easily erase in the Saturday morning draw.

Photo: Angus Davies (left), and Undertow

Following the curling and snacking, the curlers were entertained by the Undertow duo, with some help from Angus Davies from the multi-talented BLUE team, showing off his Community School guitar playing skills!

See you back on the ice in a few hours for Day Two!

Mixed Doubles nationals a great experience for Cornwall member Lauren Ferguson

The Canadian Mixed Doubles Curling Championship wraps up today in Leduc Alberta. CBC TV is broadcasting the final. PEI’s representatives, Lauren Ferguson and Calvin Smith from the Crapaud Community Curling Club (Lauren is also a Cornwall member) picked up a round-robin win against Dana Ferguson/John Epping and gained lots of experience in a tough round-robin pool. They have sent along this game-by-game report:

Lauren Ferguson (left) and Calvin Smith at the provincials

Game 1 -We played Jennifer Jones/Brent Laing in the first game. Lauren and Calvin played well for their first game ever on arena ice. We had a couple chances for 2 but had to settle to one as our draws were a bit heavy. Jennifer and Brent made the playoffs but lost in the QF. I hope Jennifer’s knee is going to be ok.

Game 2- We played Dana Ferguson/John Epping. We won this game in the extra end. It was one of our best-played games of the week.

Game 3 -We played Jocelyn Peterman/Derek Samagalski. They were not missing anything at all and we had a few misses. They made the playoffs but lost in the QF.

Game 4- We played Chaelynn Kitz/Brayden Stewart. We did not have a great first four ends but we got much better in the last four ends. This junior team out of Saskatchewan were an amazing team and they finished first in our pool. We meet them our first day when we were waiting to start practices on the ices. I was cheering for them all week as well as our team. They lost in the QF game but played an amazing game.

Game 5- We played Val Sweeting/Tim March. Lauren made a hit and roll to score 3 in the 2nd end to tie the game. Calvin had a draw for 2 in the 4th end but his rock was a bit heavy and slid to far. They made it to the playoffs and lost in the round of 12.

Game 6 -We played Marilese Kasner/Dustin Kalthoff who made the QF at the World’s in mixed doubles — which Canada needed in order to have a chance to qualify for the Olympics. We finally got hammer for the first end but it did not work out so well. They were a great team and they never missed anything. \

Game 7-We played Selena Sturmay/Karsten Sturmay who both had just won the men’s and women’s University Championships for AB. The University Championships just finished on Wednesday afternoon in the same arenas. This team did not miss too many shots and they wanted to play the 8th which we were able to get 1 point.

Our pool was a tough pool but if you are going to get better you need to be playing these top teams. Playing these top teams has been an amazing experience and I have learned a lot watching. I want to thank the volunteers. They had a long 2 weeks with the 4 national events being held. Thank you to Curling Canada for making all these events possible.

The championship curling season’s not over yet for Ferguson. She’ll be skipping her regular 4 person team in the Canadian Under-18 Boy’s and  Girl’s Curling Championships, April 9-14 in Saint Andrews New Brunswick.

Neima and Biagé rinks win Wed. evening Ladder League final round

The third and final round of the Wednesday evening Ladder League wrapped up last evening, with the Paul Neima team winning the “A” pool, sponsored by Wally’s Pharmasave, and the Ray Biagé rink going undefeated to win the “B”, sponsored by New Glasgow Lobster Suppers. As it turned out, both teams were involved in exciting finals, with the winning team taking the draw prizes, and the runner-up finishing in second spot.

(L-R): A pool winner Paul Neima, Alan Mason, Joe Callaghan. Missing: Jeff Hannam

The Neima rink and the Greg Groves team both had four wins going into their game against each other in the “A” pool, with the Neima squad coming out the winner in a close contest. The Rachel MacLean and Emily Sanderson teams also had four wins.

(L-R) B Pool winners Rick Doiron, Ray Biagé, Derek Gallant, Derek MacEwen

The “B” pool game was also a close battle to the finish for the prizes, with the Rob Gallant rink having one loss and the Biagé team having none (although 3 of their games were decided by tie-breaking draws to the button!) going into their final match against each other. If Biagé had lost, Gallant would have taken the round, as they would have been tied, but Gallant would have beaten Biagé in the “head to head” results.

Thanks to all the curlers, Danny Kneabone for doing the ice, Club staff, and our great draw sponsors, listed below, from all three rounds for another great season!
