Updated: Wed. evening Ladder League Qualifier Night (roster change, and times swapped on Ice 3)

Note: we received a request from the Kamphuis team to move their game to 8:30 (two team members helping with harvest), so the Ferguson vs Joostema game will now go to 6:30, while the Kamphuis vs Nicholson game will go to 8:30. We also have a roster change.

We’re back for another season of the Wednesday evening Ladder League, and are pleased to announce a full roster of 16 teams, which will be divided into two pools of eight. This Wednesday evening, October 24, will be Qualifier Night, where your team will play another team chosen at random, with the winning team going into the A pool and the non-winning team going to the B for Round One, which will be sponsored by Don Lowther Snow Removal and Sam’s Family Restaurant.

Please note that, after consultation with the Club and based on past turnout, there will be NO CURLING on Hallowe’en evening October 31, so the first round following Qualifier Night will start on November 7 and continue for seven weeks up to Dec. 19. We will not be curling on Boxing Day (December 26), so round two will start on Jan. 2 and run through Feb. 13. The final round will start Feb. 20 and runs through April 3rd, just before the closing spiel.

As there are no weeks to spare, please note that any missing nights due to weather or other factors will NOT be played. At the end of the first and second rounds, the three A Pool teams with the fewest points will swap places with the three B Pool teams with the most. There will be prizes (generally gift certificates) for the winning A and B pool teams in each of the three rounds, courtesy of our generous sponsors. See the Rules (below) for more.

Here are the team rosters I have been sent. Note there are a couple of names missing, and there are likely misspellings, too. Feel free to email me any additions or corrections.

Rules (credit: some come from the Ottawa Curling Club’s Ladder League)

  • Open (all male, all female, or any combination) semi-competitive league. Any player can play any position, and you can change from game to game.
  • In each round (after qualifier night) you receive 3 game points for a win, 1 game point for a loss, 0 game points for a loss by default. Mark this and your team’s points scored (“score points”) on the scoresheet. In the case of a default, award one score point per end to the winning team. In the case of a tie, award an additional score point for the draw to the button winner. If your score is not marked and you win, you will get one score point more than the losing team. If you lose and your score is not marked, you will receive zero score points.
  • In the event of a default, the non-defaulting team will receive one score point for each scheduled end.
  • To break ties at the end of the round between teams with the same record, the tied teams are ranked by applying the following rules in order until one tie is broken. If a one or more ties remain, the rules are applied to each tie starting from rule 1. The process continues until all ties are broken and all teams are ranked.
    1. The teams are ranked using their head-to-head record against the other teams in the tie.
    2. The teams are ranked using the point differential for their games in the round against the other teams in the tie.
    3. The teams are ranked using the point differential for all the games in the round against all teams
    4. The teams are ranked using their initial ranking in the round
  • Ties: Decided by the skip or other designated player throwing a rock to the button, with sweeping (by your team only) permitted. The closest team will win. If neither team puts a rock in the house, the rocks are thrown again.
  • Avoiding defaults/using spares: At least one regular team member (and three players in total) must be present for the game to count, or else a default is posted.  Spares should not play a higher position than the player replaced.
  • Storms: Any games cancelled due to storms, etc. will NOT be played.
  • Teams may reschedule games to a different date and /or time by mutual consent. but ice time is often hard to find.
  • The buzzer will be used to ensure the teams are off the ice within the 2-hour time period.  If the buzzer sounds, teams will complete the current end in play to finish  the game. If tied, the standard draw to the button will then take place.

Good curling!

The Canadian Beef Masters features 15 of the top men’s teams and 15 of the top women’s teams from around the world. Teams were invited based on the World Curling Tour’s Order of Merit rankings. The Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling reserved the right to invite a sponsor’s exemption for both divisions and implemented this rule for the Canadian Beef Masters awarding spots to Team Jamie Murphy and Team Kaitlyn Jones.

Both men’s and women’s divisions are split into three pools for round-robin competition. Teams play four round-robin games against the teams within their pools with the top eight overall on each side advancing to the playoffs.

Team Brad Gushue of St. John’s, N.L. [which includes PEI’s Brett Gallant], and Winnipeg’s Team Jennifer Jones enter the Canadian Beef Masters as the defending champions. Both clubs went undefeated through the event last season in Lloydminster, Sask.

Gushue is also coming off of a title victory to start the Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling season at the Princess Auto Elite 10 last month in Chatham-Kent, Ont. Sweden’s Team Anna Hasselborg was also victorious claiming the historic inaugural women’s championship in the event.

The Canadian Beef Masters is one of the four original events in the Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling, thus making it a major, and has been held every season since 2001-02.

A $250,000 purse is on the line plus points in the race for the Pinty’s Cup, which is awarded to the season champions. Winners of the Canadian Beef Masters also earn berths to the season-ending Humpty’s Champions Cup running April 23-28 at Saskatoon’s Merlis Belsher Arena.

You don’t want to miss the first major of the new Olympic cycle. Tournament passes, weekend passes and single draw tickets are now available, visit Ticketpro.ca or call 1-888-311-9090 to purchase yours today.

Can’t make it to Truro? Broadcast coverage of the Canadian Beef Masters begins Oct. 25 at 11:30 a.m. AT on Sportsnet and online at Sportsnet NOW (Canada) and Yare (international). For the full broadcast schedule, CLICK HERE.

Spirit of Sandra Scholar Lauren Lenentine hosting Opening Funspiel/Pancake Breakfast for Schmirler Foundation

Hello everyone,

My name is Lauren Lenentine and I have been a proud member of the Cornwall Curling Club for many years now. Earlier this year, I was selected as a Spirit of Sandra Scholar by the Sandra Schmirler Foundation. The foundation was created in memory of World and Olympic curling champion, Sandra Schmirler. The foundation helps purchase equipment for hospital’s NICUs across the country, to help save the lives of babies born too soon, too sick, or too small.

I am hosting the Cornwall Curling Club Opening Bonspiel on November 16-17, with all proceeds going to the Sandra Schmirler Foundation. I have space for 16 teams. I will accept individual and team registrations. Everyone is guaranteed three games. Only one competitive curler per team, please. The entry fee is $35 per person ($140 per team). There will be great prizes for the winners!

Included in your registration is a complimentary pancake breakfast on the morning of Saturday, November 17 at the Cornwall Civic Centre (upstairs at the Club). This is open to the public, so be sure to invite your family and friends! Donations will be accepted at the door.

If you want more information or would like to register, you can email me at laurenlenentine@hotmail.com or call me at (902) 394-5840. A sign-up sheet will be posted at the club!

Good curling!
Lauren Lenentine

Reminder: Returning members registration (unless you registered online) is Wed. evening Oct. 10

As well as our new online registration system, available at CornwallCurling.com/registration, we have our traditional registration nights where you can register in person, with Board Members and Staff available to answer any questions you may have.

We also take cash and cheques in addition to credit/debit on those nights and can set up adult membership payments so you can pay in two installments, with the first due immediately, and the second due by December 1st.

Online

All curlers, including “Daytime Only”, are encouraged to register online to speed things up for those who choose to register in person on registration nights. Over the last couple of years we have experienced lineups for credit and debit payment at in-person registration, as more and more curlers switch their payment methods away from cash and cheque in favour of debit and credit cards, and we only have one card processing machine (pro tip: paying by cheque is the fastest method at in-person registration).

Returning Members In-Person Registration

In-person registration for returning adult members (including those returning to the Junior Plus) takes place on October 10th at the Club from 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm.

Priority for adult team-entry curling will be given to teams with at least 3 returning members.

Junior and New Members In-Person Registration

Due to last year’s congestion, we have scheduled in-house Junior Curler Registration (or new entries into the Junior Plus) on the evenings of the 15th and 16th of October at the same times.

New members/teams will be able to fill any unclaimed spots after October 10 (we can take online entries now and confirm them later). In-house new member registration will take place at the Club at the same time as our free, no obligation, adult curling school / curling demonstrations which will be held on October 15th, 16th, and 17th starting at 6:30 pm. Board Members will be available after each night’s curling school to answer any questions those attending the school may have.

Notes/Updates

We have had a few online registrations where the curler selected their membership type, but didn’t sign up for the appropriate league. For most memberships it’s a two-step process. Under the Products section you choose the type of membership e.g. One Evening Draw per Week or  Adult Unlimited Day/Night and then proceed to the Leagues section to choose the league or leagues you want to join.

A note on the Wednesday Daytime Team League: This league will be starting after October 31st to give curlers who come to the morning drop-in sessions time to verify their team from last year or make a new one. The Daytime Team League will continue to use the old registration style of a sign up sheet on the wall.

WCF, Curling Canada, and the Cornwall Curling Club adopt Five Rock Rule this season

The World Curling Federation and Curling Canada have both implemented the five-rock free-guard zone (FGZ) rule this season, replacing the four-rock rule that had been in effect. The Cornwall Curling Club will, of course, be adopting the revised rule, as any provincial or other championship under Curling Canada’s guidance will be using it, and it wouldn’t make much sense to play under different rules at a club.

The expanded rule means that the first five rocks thrown each end (normally the two rocks thrown by each lead and the first rock thrown by the second on the team without last rock advantage) are “protected” and cannot be removed from the FGZ between the hog line and the house until the sixth rock is thrown each end. If a rock is removed before that time, it is put back. It is fine to move an opponent’s rock by tapping it with another, as long as it remains in play.

It is expected that the extra stone in the FGZ will increase offense, reduce blank ends, and generally lead to more entertaining games.

Here are the official rule revisions from Curling Canada’s rule book:

Rule Change – Adopt the 5-rock rule (effective 2018-2019)
Officiated Rules – Rule 13. Free Guard Zone (FGZ) (2)(3)
General Rules – Rule 12. Free Guard Zone (FGZ) (2)(3)

(2) Any stationary stone(s) belonging to the opposition located in the FGZ shall not be removed from play by the delivering team prior to the delivery of the 6th stone of the end. When an opponent’s stone(s) that is removed from play from the FGZ prior to the 6th stone of the end, directly or indirectly, without exception, the delivered stone must be removed from play and any other displaced stones replaced as close as possible to its original position. Any stone previously in the FGZ but now located in the rings, biting the tee-line, or behind the tee-line, may be removed at any time.

(3) A delivered third, fourth or fifth stone of an end may hit an opposition stone(s) located in the FGZ on to a stone(s) not in the FGZ providing that any opposition stone originally located in the FGZ remains in play. If an opponent’s stone(s) is removed from play, apply Rule 13(2) (or Rule12(2)).

Join our new Mixed Doubles League!

Mixed Doubles is the new Olympic sport that’s sweeping the curling world, and we are starting a league on Sunday evenings from 6:30-8, beginning on Oct. 21st. We’ve already heard from quite a few people who are planning to join, so we’re pretty sure it’s a go. It will be team entry, with one female and one male player per team, and you will play eight-end games.

Basic rules (from WorldCurling.org)

Mixed Doubles is played by two players. One male and one female on each team. Both teams play five stones each and start every end with one stone that has been pre-placed, so the maximum amount of points in each end is six.

In most ends, the pre-placed stones, will be positioned so that the team with last stone advantage (hammer) will start the end with one stone at the back of the four foot circle. The team without the last stone advantage, will start with a centre guard.

Both teams have the right to use a ’Power Play’ once in every game, in an end where they have last stone advantage.

When a ’Power Play’ is being used, the pre-placed stones will be moved out to one of the sides, and placed as a corner guard and a stone behind it, with the back of the stone against the tee line.

Myrna and Angela Sanderson, with experience in organizing our sold-out Mixed Doubles funspiels in recent years, are looking after getting this new league going. Get in touch with them or call the Club for more info, or hit the new Online Registration system to sign up!

We recently told you about our new online registration system, available now at CornwallCurling.com/registration. As well, we have our traditional registration nights where you can register in person, with Board Members and Staff available to answer any questions you may have. We also take cash and cheques in addition to credit/debit on those nights and can set up adult membership payments so you can pay in two installments, with the first due immediately, and the second due by December 1st.

All curlers, including “Daytime Only”, are encouraged to register online to speed things up for those who choose to register in person on registration nights. Over the last couple of years we have experienced lineups for credit and debit payment at in-person registration, as more and more curlers switch their payment methods away from cash and cheque in favour of debit and credit cards, and we only have one card processing machine (hint: paying by cheque is the fastest method at in-person registration).

In-person registration for returning adult members (including those returning to the Junior Plus) takes place on October 10th at the Club from 6:30pm – 8:30pm.

Priority for adult team-entry curling will be given to teams with at least 3 returning members.

Due to last year’s congestion, we have scheduled in-house Junior Curler Registration (or new entries into the Junior Plus) on the evenings of the 15th and 16th of October at the same times.

New members /teams will be able to fill any unclaimed spots after October 10 (we can take online entries now and confirm them later). In-house new member registration will take place at the Club at the same time as our free, no obligation, adult curling school / curling demonstrations which will be held on October 15th, 16th, and 17th starting at 6:30 pm. Board Members will be available after each night’s curling school to answer any questions those attending the school may have.

Our new Online Registration and Payment System is Open for Business!

As well as signing up at the Club on designated registration nights, all members, both new and returning, can now register as a member of the Cornwall Curling Club (please note that we are in PEI, not the Cornwall Curling Centre in Ontario) at any time via our “Curling.io”
online registration system provided with the assistance of Curling Canada and Curl PEI, and available on our CornwallCurling.com website. You can sign up, select a membership type, join our various leagues and pay for memberships, and lockers (only if you had one last season). Please note that returning members have priority for their draws and have to confirm that intention by October 10, so it’s possible that a request for a new member to curl in a particular draw (or a returning member who has not signed up for a draw by cannot be accommodated. In that case, we’ll contact you to discuss alternatives.

For online payment, we accept debit cards (must have a Visa or Mastercard logo on them), and Visa, Mastercard and American Express credit cards too. You can also choose the option to pay at the Club, using cash, cheque or a debit or credit card.

Those who wish to pay their membership in two equal installments, with the final installment due by December 1st, can register online choose the “Cash/Cheque” payment option at checkout time and pay at the Club, as online payments must be full membership payments only. All Junior memberships must be paid in full at time of registration and consequently, they can use the online payment system

Basic Online Registration and Payment Instructions

Click the link below, and, if you are not signed in automatically from a previous visit, select the Login option on the upper right and sign in as a new or existing member (if you use Gmail, use the faster “Login with Gmail” option), and then select the “Product” (membership type) that applies to you (except for Little Rocker, Novice Instructional and Commercial League where you select Leagues instead).  Then, select the leagues in which you wish to participate for the upcoming season on the “Leagues” menu.  When you enter your information under a League you will see various add-on options. Select any that apply to you. Like most online ordering and payment systems, your “Products” are added to a “shopping cart” which you can view at any time on the top line menu. When you are ready to pay, select the “Complete Purchase” option at the bottom of the shopping cart, select your payment option (Credit/Debit or Cash/Cheque) and enter your payment details for the first option, or visit the Club for the second).

When you successfully place your registration order, you will receive a confirmation email. You can also view your orders on the menu under your profile name on the registration system.

Notes

This system is for membership curling only. Pay per game Drop-In curling for drop-in draws and those who are sparing but are not members is paid for at the bar.

Those interested in daytime Drop-In or Stick curling will see there is no set League, so just sign up for the applicable “Product” (membership) e.g. 2 Adult Sessions Per Week or Adult Unlimited (Day Only) etc. There IS an option for the Daytime League.

Those interested in Little Rocker or Novice Instructional training or the adult Commercial League will see that there is no Product, so you bypass the Products section, and select them from the Leagues section.

Online Locker rental selection and payment is available as a”Product” but is only for those who had a locker last year, and wish to continue. If you did not, please sign up for one at the Club and you will be put on the waiting list for a locker when one becomes available.

Those who qualify for a couples discount must first register individually. The discount only applies to the “Adult Unlimited Day/Night Product”. When you click on that product name and add it to your shopping cart, you will see a link that says “Membership Required”.  Click on it and then click on your profile or press the Select button. At this point, you will see a button that says “Register as a Couple”. Select it, type in your partner’s name to the right, and click “Save and Continue. The couples discount will then be applied and show up in your shopping cart. Your partner will have to follow the same procedure.

If you have difficulty, send an email to cornwallcurling@eastlink.ca. You are also welcome to take advantage of our traditional registration nights.

All about our Pro Shop, and our Club Operating Hours

The Cornwall Curling Club is currently in a limited operational mode as we prepare for full opening on October 15th, with our Manager Bev McCormick busy getting our new online registration system and other things in order. Our Pro Shop, which we believe is PEI’s largest and best curling supply store, will be getting stocked over the next few weeks, with many items available after a big order of our top-selling Hardline Curling line arrives the week of Oct. 1, with the Pro Shop fully stocked by October 15th. Other brands we carry include Balance Plus, Acacia, Tournament, and (limited) Goldline. In the meantime, we do have items from last year in stock, so give us a call if you need something, and we may have it. Our manager is in and out of the Club as she gets everything ready for the season, so call first at (902) 566-4427 to avoid disappointment.

Our staff is available after Oct 15th from 2pm-10:30pm Mon, Tue, Wed,  and Thurs. There is curling before 2 pm, but the Daytime Curlers look after it, and regular staff aren’t normally on duty. Sundays we will be open at 12:30pm until Juniors, practices, and evening leagues are done for the day. Friday and Sat.  hours depend on events and rentals. Please call if you are coming on weekends, or before 2 pm on weekdays if you want to purchase something, to ensure that the manager or her staff are here.

New this year from Hardline Curling:
Country Broom (No photo yet) $179.95
Rebel Broom (also comes in 1” hot pink) $179.95
image for the Rebel broom with the Rebel icepad
Composite Broom: $99.95 (no picture yet).
Description:
Recreational curlers love the icePad as well – the Pro fabric lasts 10x longer than any other fabric, saves them money, and saves them energy with its easy to sweep with characteristics. However, due to the cost of the high end carbon fibre broom there are customers looking for a less costly alternative which is why we are happy to announce our entry into the composite broom market. The head will be an icePad “lite” version which will be very similar to the original icePad, but without all the bells/whistles and only approved for recreational curling. The new composite broom will be in direct competition with our competitors’ mid-range brooms, and Hardline believes it will become the best choice in this market segment.

Helmets: $49.95

With new safety regulations that Curling Canada is releasing, we wanted to make sure we have the product to meet the expected needs of curlers who will require helmets. All helmet sizes will be available.

Products from other companies:

Acacia Shoes:

Icons $139.95
Sizes 5-13, 3/16” slider

Hackers $129.95 – $149.95

Matrix $129.95- $149.95
Stick Curling Shoes
size 5-13 $119.95

Also, to ensure that you don’t slip on the ice, or put debris on it, it is recommended to replace your gripper every year.
We carry Balance Plus and Tournament grippers, for $19.95 & $21.95

Cornwall hosting both Maritime and Canadian stick curling ch’ships this season

There’s been a lot of interest in two person per team curling recently, especially with Canada winning an Olympic Gold Medal in the relatively new sport of Mixed Doubles. The Cornwall Curling Club has been playing 2-person curling for years, with their popular Stick Curling league. With stick curling, rock delivery is done from a standing position, with a “delivery stick” as opposed to bending down to deliver from an ice-level “hack”.

The Cornwall Curling Club will be hosting both the Maritime and the Canadian 2 person stick curling championships this season, with the Maritime, which they last hosted in 2016, taking place from March 15-17 2019., and the  Canadian championship being held from March 31 to April 3rd.  Cornwall previously hosted the national event back in 2013, winning both divisions on home ice.
For entry details for the Canadians, visit canadianstickcurling.ca

Volunteers will be required to help make both of these events a success. We’ll have more info on these championships as they approach.

Welcome to the 2018-2019 season! Daytime curling, and Free adult curling lessons start Oct. 15

It’s almost time to curl here at the Cornwall Curling Club! We welcome new members, from those who have never curled before, to experienced curlers who are looking to join our vibrant Club here in our modern facility at the Cornwall Civic Centre. We welcome members from all over PEI, not just from the Cornwall area, and, although we emphasize the recreational aspects of curling, have also had teams and curlers who have won Provincial, Canadian, and even World titles.

Curling starts Oct. 15

Icemaking will begin on the 1st of October, with ice available for use on Monday, October 15. Our very popular daytime “Drop In” curling from 10 am to noon Monday through Friday will begin at that time, with teams made up each day from the players who are there. Both members and walk-on “pay per play” curlers are welcome, with walk-on rates of $10 per game, or 10 game passes for $80.

Free Learn to Curl Oct. 15, 16, 17

Also starting on Oct. 15 and continuing for three evenings will be our FREE, no-obligation adult Learn to Curl sessions. Curlers can come any one, two, or all three nights – there will be both new and continuing classes each evening. Wear loose or stretchy pants and a light jacket, and bring clean sneakers — everything else is provided. These evening sessions are for adult curlers, with younger curlers receiving instruction in our Junior Instructional Program, with a money back guarantee for juniors who try it but choose not to continue after a few weeks.

League Play – including new Mixed Doubles League, and new Seniors Learn to Curl

Our evening league play begins Sunday Oct. 21st, with individual entry mixed curling, where new teams are made up every seven weeks, taking place Monday and Thursday evenings, semi-competitive team curling available in our Wednesday evening Ladder League, and our competitive team curling league going Tuesday evenings.

Mixed Doubles

New on Sunday evenings from 6:30 to 8, and scheduled to start on Oct. 21 will be a league for the new Olympic sport of  Mixed Doubles curling.

Seniors Learn to Curl

Also new this season, in conjunction with Curl PEI, will be a ten-week Seniors Learn to Curl Program on Tuesday afternoons from 12:30-2:30. This is planned to start on October 23. Although the primary target is seniors, any adult available on Tuesday afternoons is welcome. Fee is $100 for the 10 weeks.

Junior curling program

Our Junior Instructional Program begins on Oct. 28, running on Sundays from 1-2 pm for Little Rockers (age 6-7), and 2-3 pm for Novice (age 8-12), as well as on Tuesdays from 5-6 pm for Novice. Juniors (13-20) who have completed the instructional program are invited to schedule team practices Monday to Friday after school.

Stick Curling

We are PEI’s most active Stick Curling facility, and have even hosted and won the Canadian Championship. In fact, we’re hosting the Maritime and the Canadian Stick Championships this season! Stick curling is a two-person sport, with similarities to Mixed Doubles, and can be played by anyone, including those with mobility challenges, as you use a delivery stick from a standing position instead of a traditional hack delivery. We have even had wheelchair curlers play in Stick events here – our facility is accessible right down to the ice level. Stick curling goes weekday afternoons except for Wednesday, from 12:30 to 2:30. Stick curlers are also welcome to participate in our regular leagues and bonspiels.

Info on Registration, Rates, etc. coming soon!

Stay tuned for information on Registration, including our new Online Registration and Payment System, our low Membership Rates (hint: they’re unchanged from last year!), our schedule of Bonspiels and Events, our Commercial League, our Board of  Directors and Executive, and more details on our Curling Lessons and other events, as they approach.

Stick with us, and find out why we should be your curling club! And, if you’re a returning member, welcome back! You can find us online at CornwallCurling.com, and on Facebook and Twitter @cornwallcurling.

Cornwall’s Lauren Lenentine receives $1000 Sport PEI scholarship (Sport PEI)

On an annual basis, Sport PEI awards three student-athlete scholarships valued at $1000. The criteria used to select the recipients includes achievements in sport, the classroom and their communities.

This year, the scholarships were made possible thanks to donations from Sport Centre Physiotherapy, Gemini Screen Printing & Embroidery, and Discount Car & Truck Rental. The 2018 Sport PEI Scholarship recipients are Lauren Lenentine (Bluefield), Emma Jinks (Charlottetown Rural), and Chris McQuaid (Colonel Gray).

Each of the student-athletes has excelled in the classroom, their sport, and their community. In addition to the three Sport PEI recipients, Ethan Boyd, of Three Oaks Senior High has been awarded the Earl F. Smith scholarship. The honor is named respectively after the PEI Sports Hall of Famer and recognizes a high school graduate embodying the spirit of multi-sport and competition.

Lauren Lenentine, a Bluefield graduate, will be studying Science at Dalhousie University in the fall and has plans to become a physiotherapist. This past year, she was an alternate for Team Canada at the World Junior Curling Championships in Scotland where Canada won gold.  Lauren is a nine-time PEI provincial curling champion and was runner-up at the 2018 PEI Scotties Provincial Tournament of Hearts. She was recently selected as a recipient of the Sandra Schmirler scholarship, one of the most prestigious accolades in curling.  The selection process for this scholarship is rigorous and competitive. Winners excel both athletically and academically. They also need to show community engagement aligned with a commitment to giving back and keeping Sandra’s legacy alive.

Emma Jinks, a four-time Canadian National Squash Champion and graduate from Charlottetown Rural, was the top recruit for the University of Virginia in the NCAA. She will play as the number one or number two spot on the varsity squad and plans on competing all four years with the Division One school. This past year, Emma won her third consecutive Sport PEI Junior Female Athlete of the Year award. She competed in the number one spot for Canada at the World Junior Squash Championships in New Zealand and finished ninth with thirty-five countries in attendance.  At the Canadian Junior Open, which hosted eighteen countries, and 273 athletes, Emma managed to win the top tier U19 women’s division. She was the only Canadian to win a division in the entire tournament.  With all her travel, Emma still kept a 94% grade average and has her Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Chris McQuaid may not spend much time in PEI while competing in the QMJHL, but with hard work, he will graduate from Colonel Gray this year with a 95% grade average. He plans to continue playing for the Gatineau Olympiques this fall while studying Business online at UPEI.When he has time, Chris also competes as a track athlete and is undefeated at all events he has participated in during the school year.  A community volunteer on PEI and Quebec, Chris has a bright future ahead of him.

The Earl F. Smith recipient, Ethan Boyd, has his sights set on making the Dalhousie men’s volleyball team this fall while studying Business Management.  As the top male volleyball, and basketball, player in the province this year, Ethan leads by example with a quite personality but explosive skill. This was never more evident than when he helped Three Oaks High School win three volleyball championships in a row and a basketball championship for the first time in six years. Ethan is also involved in the community with Big Brothers/Big Sisters and spent time in Mozambique, Africa helping those in small communities.

Cornwall’s Lauren Lenentine wins $5000 Sandra Schmirler scholarship!

Cornwall’s Lauren Lenentine is one of this year’s “SPIRIT OF SANDRA” scholarship winners. Previous winners have included Brooks Roche (2015) from Montague, and Veronica Smith (2014) from Cornwall.

For the sixth consecutive year, the Sandra Schmirler Foundation has awarded six $5,000 scholarships to junior curlers pursuing their competitive curling dreams while continuing their post-secondary education. Scholars will be mentored by well-known champion curlers, Cathy Overton-Clapham and Pat Simmons.

“The selection process for this scholarship is rigorous and competitive. Each of our scholars excels both athletically and academically. And, they are all engaged with their communities and committed to giving back to curling and keeping Sandra’s legacy alive”, said Cathy.

“We are looking forward to sharing information and experiences as well as providing guidance, motivation, and support to these talented young athletes as they aspire to realize their own dreams”, added Pat.

As part of their scholarship, each of the new scholars will organize a fundraising event in their own community. At the end of curling season, the scholars will award a $10,000 grant to a hospital of their choice for the purchase of life-saving equipment to help save babies lives.

“This scholarship gave me opportunities, friendships and memories that will last a life time. Although my time as a scholar is over, I have been introduced to a family who ensures that the legacy of Sandra will live on forever and that babies, too sick or too small, can grow up to be champions like Sandra.”
Kyle Barron, 2-time Scholar, Stephenville, NL
