Reds win closing spiel by a landslide

After bringing a $6000 lead into Saturday skins play at the Cornwall Curling Club closing spiel, sponsored by Leary’s Independent Grocer in Cornwall, the Red team caught the Blues still sleeping in the morning draw, taking ALL the Skins ($36,000 of “funny” money), and going on to win the event by a final score of $240,000 to $151,000. Blue did a little better off the ice, winning the baby food eating contest, but that didn’t put much of a dent in the difference.

We received some unfortunate news in the early afternoon – the evening band would be unable to make it due to a family illness. However, the problem was quickly fixed thanks to Kelly Watts, who got on the phone and convinced Tim MacPherson of Vintage to fill in on very short notice, and, judging by the big turnout and the packed dance floor, he did a great job!

During the day we had a great lunch of hamburgers, sausages and hotdogs cooked by volunteers on the barbecue, as well as lemon and banana cake, muffins and biscuits in the morning. Following the last curling draw, we were invited upstairs for an incredible roast beef dinner with all the fixings, and dessert, all catered by Allan Carmichael.

The dinner was followed by the prize presentation, with winners including: Trivia – Barb Duncan-Biagé team. Barb also won the female best costume award, while Peter Murdoch won the male. The reverse draw for a free membership was won by Danielle Girard, with the secondary prizes of Crowbush green fees going to Stephanie O’Keefe and Bob Fowler. The Draw to the Button contest was won by Dave Younker.

Best costume winners Barb and Peter

It was time for the team prizes. The top Blue team, skipped by Peter Murdoch, were given gift certificates from the title sponsors.

The red teams were then given the pick of the prize table from the teams with the highest earnings to the lowest. The Danny Kneabone team were the biggest winners, and had first pick.

Team Barb Duncan-Biagé (missing from photo: Gerald Dykerman)

The meal and presentations concluded with an address by Club President Allan Mason, who thanked the curlers, organizers, including Board members Lisa MacEachern and Darlene Howlett, the caterers, club staff, Board and volunteers. He highlighted the success of the Thursday evening “Learn to Curl” program, from which five members were entered in the bonspiel, and appear to be on their way to becoming regular members next season. Lisa also took the stage, and thanked everyone who helped make the event a big success. The curlers then headed downstairs to dance the night away to the great music.

Alan

Reds ahead, but not by much, after opening day at Closing Spiel

The Closing Spiel, sponsored by Leary’s Independent Grocer in Cornwall got underway on Friday evening, with one complete draw round played, using a skins format. At the end of round one, the Reds are leading the Blues by a mere $6000. The stakes get higher on Saturday, with each end worth twice as much, so it shouldn’t take long for Blue to make up the difference! Draw 2 goes Saturday morning, with four end games, while a draw of six end games will wrap up the curling in the afternoon. Trivia points from Friday evening are also factored in. We’ve got some pictures below, from Kimberley MacDonald of the Friday evening action. Don’t forget the wrapup dance, from 8-11 on Saturday evening following the banquet and prizes, featuring TIP ‘ER BACK. All are welcome – $5 cover for those not entered in the bonspiel.

Wed. evening Ladder League wraps up for season

The final draw of the Wednesday evening Ladder League concluded last night. Two rinks, skipped by Joe Callaghan and Rachel MacLean, finished with 4-2 records in the B pool. Callaghan beat MacLean in their game on February 15 (they were supposed to play again last week, but it was cancelled), and, by the “head to head” results, wins the final B pool round, and some Wendy’s gift certificates.

Going into the final evening of the “A” pool, three rinks, skipped by Angus Kennedy, Lauren Ferguson, and Kelly Watts, all had 4-2 records. The Kennedy rink were eliminated from contention as they were unable to field a team for the final draw, leaving two contenders for the MR Seafood gift certificates. The Ferguson rink won their very close game against the Greg Groves rink, but would need a Watts loss in order for them to take first place, as they lost to Watts in their round robin encounter. Watts was up one coming home with hammer and lying one in the four foot against the Greg Robertson rink. Robertson, with his last stone, made a fantastic draw around a guard to the four foot. which would tie the game if his rock ended up as shot. The two rocks were very close, and after looking at the stones several times, Watts concluded that she had shot rock, and threw her last one away. After a couple of measures, it was concluded that Watts did indeed have shot rock, and took the A pool prize for the final round.

Thanks to all the league curlers and to our sponsors (listed below) for all four rounds this season. See you in the fall!

Here are the winners of each pool for each round this season:

Nova Scotia rinks winner/runner-up at Canadian Stick Ch’ship

The 2017 Canadian Stick Curling Championship was held last week in New Glasgow NS. There were 44 teams from 6 provinces competing in the triple knockout event with 8 of them being from PEI. Gordon MacDonald and Floyd Stewart from the Montague had the best result among the PEI teams, with a 6-3 record — coming within one win of qualifying for the playoffs. Floyd was just back on the ice for a few days prior to the event after having a knee replacement last fall.

Other competing PEI teams and their records were: Walter Callaghan and Roger Gavin (Alberton) 5-3, Sterling Stratton and Barry Craswell (Cornwall) 5-3, Gloria Clarke and Ruth Stavert (Cornwall) 4-3, Roddie MacLean and John Dunsford (Cornwall) 3-3, Vince Fisher and Ernie Stavert (Cornwall) 3-3, Myrna Craswell and Elaine Hughes (Cornwall) 2-3, Bazil and Sterling Higginbotham (Montague) 2-3. The event was won by Jim Russell and Milt Larson from Halifax when they defeated Dave MacDougal and Paul Doucet from Yarmouth in an all NS final. There was no women’s division in the event this year. Clarke/ Stavert finished with the best record of all the women’s teams competing.
The 2018 Championship will be held in St. Albert Alberta during the first week of April. There is a strong possibility that the 2019 event will be held in PEI.

Annual General Meeting Date set; Motion to change (back) Directors’ terms

This is official notice that the Cornwall Curling Club’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) will take place the evening of Friday, May 26, 2017 at the curling club.

This is also official notice that the Board of Directors will also be forwarding a motion to be voted on at the AGM to amend the bylaws to change the term of directors from two years back to three. Therefore, the following Motion to amend the Club Bylaws will be on the agenda for the 2017 AGM:

Preamble:

As per the current bylaws the affairs of the Cornwall Curling Club are conducted by a volunteer Board of Directors comprised of 12 club members.

In October 2014, at a special general meeting, a members vote was passed on a motion to amend the term of board members from three to two years effective for board members starting at the spring 2015 Annual General Meeting (AGM).  The motion also allowed for the serving of two consecutive two year terms subject to election at the AGM.

The main arguments presented in favor of the motion were:

  • The motion would allow more members to be involved as board members
  • Members would be more willing to serve as board members because of the reduced term

The main arguments presented against the motion were:

  • Two-year terms would require more recruiting as six board members (1/2 of the board) opposed to four board members (1/3 of the board) on average would be retired each year.
  • Board member contributions and decision effectiveness would suffer from the lack of experience resulting from the shorter term. The two consecutive term rule was implemented for this reason although it does conflict with the 2nd argument in favor of the motion.

After discussions at several board meetings the current board (2016/2017) decided at the March 19, 2017 board meeting to put forward a motion at the 2017 AGM to revert to the previous bylaws of board members serving three-year terms applicable to Board members starting their term at the 2017 AGM.

The arguments in favor of the motion are:

  • Recruiting 6 new members versus 4 new members has proven difficult despite the reduced term from three to two years.
  • The trade off between diversity and inclusiveness from the two year term and effectiveness and continuity from the three year term favours the three year term.

The arguments against the motion are:

  • The Board has no arguments against the motion

 The Motion:

To amend the current term of board members from two to three years.

If the motion is passed by 2/3 of the Adult Members at the 2017 AGM the following bylaws will be amended as indicated:

Current bylaws:

2.1.6    Each Director shall be elected for a term of two (2) years ending at the second annual meeting after the Directors election. [Rev. Oct2014]

2.1.8    No Director shall be eligible for election to more than two consecutive terms. [Rev. Oct2014]

2.1.11  Any Director may be removed before the expiration of the Director’s two-year term by an affirmative majority vote of the Directors present at any regular meeting of the Board or at a special meeting duly convened for that purpose.  Another person may be elected by simple majority vote to hold office for the unexpired portion of the two-year term of the Director so removed. [Rev. Oct 2014]

Amended to:

2.1.6    Each Director shall be elected for a term of three (3) years ending at the third annual meeting after the Directors election. [Rev. Oct2017]

2.1.8    No director shall be eligible for election to consecutive terms.[Rev. Oct2017]

2.1.11  Any Director may be removed before the expiration of the Director’s term by an affirmative majority vote of the Directors present at any regular meeting of the Board or at a special meeting duly convened for that purpose.  Another person may be elected by simple majority vote to hold office for the unexpired portion of the term of the Director so removed. [Rev. Oct 2017]

All current members are welcome to discuss this with current Board members in advance of the AGM if you have questions or require further clarification.

  • The Board of Directors of the Cornwall Curling Club

Final rock decides Wendy’s U16 Development League

The Wendy’s U16 Junior Development League wrapped up this Saturday, March 18 2017, here at the Cornwall Curling Club.

Congratulations to all participants, coaches, parents/guardians and staff for making the 2nd season another success.

Congratulations to the top five teams who received gift certificates from Wendy’s Restaurant, and thanks to Wendy’s for the sponsorship.

The battle for first came down to a final game between the Lauren Ferguson and Mitchell Schut rinks.  The defending champion Schut rink needed a win and 5 of the 6 ends to pass the Ferguson rink, and had 4 ends won heading into the final end.  Lauren Ferguson was forced into a shot to the button with her final stone facing three Schut counters, which she made to win the end and claim first overall.

The Bailey O’Grady rink was firing on all cylinders in their final game to win six ends and capture 3rd place overall.

Ferguson rink (missing from photo: Emma Coffin)

1s Place – Lauren Ferguson, Emma Coffin, Sierra Clyke, Emily Sanderson (105 points)

Schut rink. Missing from photo: Michael MacEwen

2nd Place – Mitchell Schut, Colin MacKenzie, Michael MacEwen, Liam Kelly (102 points)

O’Grady team

3rd Place – Bailey O’Grady, Gillian Barbrick, Katelyn Burgoyne, Megan Perry (88 points)

4th Place (Tie)

Rachel MacLean rink

 – Rachel MacLean, Jordan Dunphy-Condon, Olivia Barbour, Avery Nicholson (87 points)

Katie Shaw rink

   – Katie Shaw, Izzy Tatlock, Grace Bulger, Lexie Murray  (87 points)

The league experienced good parity as can be seen by the above scores.  The 6th and 7th placed teams tied with 84 points and all teams experienced at least one win.

On behalf of the Board and Staff of the Cornwall Curling club have a wonderful summer and we hope to see you all again next year.

Good Curling!

The Silver Fox team, skipped by Leo Stewart, were awarded first place when tiebreaking rules were brought into play, and will play the fourth-place rink, Crapaud (Alan Inman) in one 9:30 am Monday semi-final, while 2nd place Western Community (Glen Betts) and third place Charlottetown (Mitch O’Shea) square off in the other. The semi winners advance to the 1:30 pm Monday final. Cornwall’s Paul Arsenault finished just out of the playoffs, with a 3-3 record.

Crapaud’s Julie Mutch rink went undefeated with a 5-0 record in the women’s event, and have advanced to the finals, where they will get two chances to win, as the rules state that a team undefeated in the round robin must be beaten twice. These games go at 5:30 pm Monday and, if needed, 9 am Tuesday, and will involve Crapaud and the winner of a 1:30 pm Monday game between the Silver Fox (Amanda MacLean, 4-1) and the winner of a 9 am Monday tiebreaker between Montague (Darlene MacLeod-London) and Charlottetown (Susan Dowling-Shaw), both 2-3. Cornwall’s Debbie Rhodenhizer rink went 1-4 in the round robin.

The winning men’s and women’s teams will advance to the 2018 Travelers Curling Club Championship, to be played Nov. 20-25 2017 at the Cataraqui Golf and Country Club in Kingston Ont.
