Cornwall’s Lenentine goes undefeated to repeat as U18 girls champs, while DeWolfe plays Mitchell Schut for boy’s title

The Lauren Lenentine rink from the Cornwall Curling Club went undefeated, sweeping all three section finals, all against clubmate Rachel MacLean, to win the girl’s division of the Provincial Under 18 Curling Championships this afternoon at the Charlottetown Curling Complex, along with the opportunity to compete in the inaugural Canadian Under-18 Boys and Girls Curling Championships, April 18-22 in Moncton NB. As Lenentine won all three sections of the Modified Triple Knockout round, as per the rules, a championship round was not necessary.

The Lenentine rink are repeat provincial winners, and also won the Atlantic championships (no longer being held) last year. Three of the four team members were also on PEI’s Junior Women’s team this year. The Lenentine team includes third Kristie Rogers, second Tati Kelly, and lead Rachel O’Connor with coach Pat Quilty. Other members of the runner-up MacLean foursome are third Jordan Dunphy-Condon, second Olivia Barbour, and lead Avery Nicholson, with coach Carl Nicholson.

In the Sunday morning “C” semi-finals, Lenentine beat Cornwall clubmate Alexis Burris 6-2, while MacLean got by the host club’s Katie Shaw rink 9-6 to setup their third section final showdown. In this afternoon’s “C” final, Lenentine blanked the first end, and scored a triple in the second end and deuces in ends four and six, keeping MacLean to single points in the odd ends, with MacLean conceding after the seventh end, for a 7-3 final score.

Meanwhile it’s down to two teams in the boy’s championship, with Donald DeWolfe and his Cornwall, Silver Fox, and Western Community Curling Club team winning their second modified triple knockout section Sunday afternoon, beating the Parker MacFadyen foursome from the Silver Fox, Montague, and Cornwall clubs by a 7-4 score in the “C” final. MacFadyen beat Cornwall’s Mitchell Schut 8-4 in the Sunday morning “C” semi-final, aided by a 5 point 4th end, to advance to the final qualifier.

DeWolfe previously won the “B” final, with a 6-4 win over Schut, who won the “A” event with a 9-8 victory over MacFadyen. Schut and DeWolfe now play off at 9:30 am on Monday in the first of two possible championship round games. If double-section winner DeWolfe takes the first game, they win the boy’s championship and advance to the national event in Moncton. If Schut wins, a deciding game goes at 1:30 Monday.

Five boy’s teams and six girl’s rinks took part in the provincial championship.

Cornwall’s Lenentine 1 win away from U18 repeat, Cornwall’s DeWolfe vs MacFadyen in boy’s “C” qualifier

The defending provincial and Atlantic champion Lauren Lenentine rink from the Cornwall Curling Club remains undefeated at the provincial Under 18 Curling Championships at the Charlottetown Curling Complex, and could repeat as provincial champs as early as this afternoon. They have won two of the three modified triple knockout sections, both against their clubmates the Rachel MacLean team, and face them again at 1:30 in the “C” event final. If they win their third final, no championship round is needed. If MacLean wins this afternoon, they will have to beat Lenentine twice in the championship round at 9:30 and 1:30 Monday, while a win in either game would give Lenentine the title.

In this morning’s “C” semi-finals, Lenentine beat Cornwall clubmate Alexis Burris 6-2, while MacLean got by the host club’s Katie Shaw rink 9-6 to setup their third section final showdown.

In the boy’s “C” semi-final this morning, Parker MacFadyen and his team from the Silver Fox, Montague and Cornwall clubs scored five points in the 4th end on the way to doubling the A section winners, Cornwall’s Mitchell Schut rink, 8-4. MacFadyen now plays B section winner Donald DeWolfe and his Cornwall, Silver Fox, and Western team in the C final at 1:30. A win by MacFadyen would put him in the Monday championship round at 9:30 am against DeWolfe, with the winner facing Schut in the 1:30 pm final (the teams would be tied in number of section finals played in, so, according to the rules, the first qualifier, from the “A” section, would get the bye to the 2nd game). A win by DeWolfe would put him in both championship round games against Schut, with DeWolfe, as the winner of two sections, taking the title with a win in either game, while Schut would have to win both.

Five boy’s and six girl’s teams took part in this event, for curlers under age 18. The winners advance to the inaugural Canadian Under 18 Boys and Girls Curling Championship, operated by Curling Canada, April 18 to 22 at Curl Moncton and on arena ice at Moncton’s Superior Propane Centre.

Cornwall’s Lenentine and DeWolfe win “B” sections at PEI U18 Ch’ships

Day Two is over at the PEI Under 18 Curling Championships at the Charlottetown Curling Complex, with the “B” section winners of the boy’s and  girl’s modified triple knockout draws determined.

Photo (L-R): Tati Kelly, Kristie Rogers, Lauren Lenentine, Rachel O’Connor during warmup/practice

The defending champion Lauren Lenentine rink from Cornwall, three members of whom are also reigning PEI Under 21 champs, won their second section on Saturday afternoon with a 6-3 victory over their clubmates, the Rachel MacLean rink, and remain undefeated with a 4-0 win-loss record. Lenentine beat Katie Shaw from the host club 8-3, in a semi-final game much closer than the score indicated, while MacLean defeated Cornwall clubmate Alexis Burris 8-5 in the other semi to advance to the “B” final. MacLean and Lenentine had also met in the “A” final, with Lenentine winning by a big margin.

This time was different, with the game tied 3-all at the fourth end break. Lenentine took one with hammer in the 5th, stole a single in the 6th, and the teams exchanged singles in the final two ends to give Lenentine, whose team includes third Kristie Rogers, second Tati Kelly, and lead Rachel O’Connor, with Pat Quilty coaching, the win, and a big advantage  in the Monday championship round. By winning two sections, Lenentine can take the championship if she wins either game, while her opponent, the winner of the “C” event, would have to win both. Lenentine now takes on Cornwall clubmate Alexis Burris in the “C” semi-finals Sunday at 9:30 am, with MacLean playing Shaw in the other semi. Burris eliminated clubmate Lauren Ferguson with a 7-3 win this afternoon, while Shaw eliminated Cornwall’s Baily O’Grady in a 12-7 shootout. Shaw had a 10-0 lead after 4 ends, but O’Grady narrowed the gap with a deuce in the 5th end and a steal of 5 in the sixth, but Shaw took singles in ends 7 and 8 for the win.

If Lenentine beats Burris and advances to the 1:30 pm “C” final, and wins it, she will take the title, and the championship round will not be played.

There will be at least two teams in the Monday men’s championship round. The Donald DeWolfe rink from the Cornwall, Silver Fox, and Western clubs, who lost to Cornwall’s Mitchell Schut team in their Friday morning openers, came up with a 6-4 win over “A” pool winner Schut this afternoon to take the “B” final and a spot in the championship round. Other members of team DeWolfe are third Jacob Wilkins, second stone Alex Gallant, and lead Nick Johnston, with coach Roger Gavin. Schut now faces Parker MacFadyen and his Silver Fox, Montague, and Cornwall team in the 9:30 am Sunday “C” semis, with the winner facing DeWolfe in the “C”  final at 1:30. Schut edged MacFadyen 9-8 to win the “A” final on Friday night, scoring four points in the last end for the comeback win. MacFadyen advanced to the “C” semi by eliminating Devin Schut (Mitchell’s brother) with an 8-4 win Saturday afternoon.

The Monday championship games are scheduled for 9:30 am and 1:30 pm.

Cornwall’s Lauren Lenentine and Mitchell Schut teams win 1st U18 section finals

The Provincial Under 18 Curling Championships got underway Friday at the Charlottetown Curling Complex, with five boy’s and six girl’s teams competing, three draws played, and the “A” sections final winners determined in the Modified Triple Knockout draw. The “A” winners, both from the Cornwall Curling Club, were the defending girl’s U18 champion Lauren Lenentine rink,  three members of whom are on the reigning U21 team as well, and the Mitchell Schut team, who finished third last year in the boy’s section. They have earned berths in their respective Monday championship rounds, and also drop down to compete in the “B” and “C” sections. If either Lenentine or Schut were to win all three sections, their respective 2 game Monday championship round would not be necessary. If a team wins two sections, they would win the championship if they won either championship round game, while their opponent would have to win both.

Photo: Lauren Lenentine delivers a rock, while Tati Kelly (left) and Rachel O’Connor prepare to sweep.

Lenentine, whose team includes third Kristie Rogers, second Tati Kelly, and lead Rachel O’Connor, with coach Pat Quilty, dominated in her “A” final game against Cornwall clubmate Rachel MacLean, taking 5 points in the first end, and going on to win 13-1 in just six ends. Lenentine won her opener 7-1 against Alexis Burris, also from Cornwall, while MacLean beat clubmate Lauren Ferguson 7-4 in her first game, taking three points in the final end.

Photo: Skip Schut joins in the sweeping, and third Colin MacKenzie steps in too, to get the winning rock into the rings.

Mitchell Schut and his team of third Colin MacKenzie, second Michael MacEwen, lead Liam Kelly and coach Nancy Yeo, edged last year’s runner-up team, skipped by Cornwall clubmate Donald DeWolfe, with members from the Cornwall, Silver Fox, and Western Community clubs, 5-4 in their opener, but ran into trouble in the seventh end of the “A” final against Parker MacFadyen and his rink from the Silver Fox, Montague, and Cornwall, when MacFadyen picked up four points to lead 8-5 going into the final end. Schut was lying three going into his final shot, a draw for the win, and knew he was light on release, but, with a lot of sweeping, the rock managed to hit the rings for the 9-8 comeback win. MacFadyen  beat the other Schut brother in the event, Devin, 7-2 to advance to the “A” final.

Lenentine now takes on the host club’s Katie Shaw rink, while MacLean faces clubmate Burris in the girl’s “B” semi-finals at 9:30 Saturday morning, with the winners advancing to the “B” final at 1:30 pm. Schut is already in the 1:30 pm boy’s “B” final, where he will play the winner of a 9:30 game between MacFadyen and DeWolfe. The “C” event goes on Sunday, also with 9:30 am and 1:30 pm draws, with the championship round, if needed, going Monday, also at 9:30 am and, if necessary, 1:30 pm.

The winning U18 teams earn the right to compete in the inaugural Canadian Under 18 Boys and Girls Curling Championship, operated by Curling Canada, April 18 to 22 at Curl Moncton and on arena ice at Moncton’s Superior Propane Centre.

PEI Junior Women’s Team back from National Championship in Victoria, B.C. (from ClydeRiverPEI.com)

Curling Canada/Michael Burns photo

We followed up with Cornwall Curling Club’s – PEI Junior Women’s Curling Champions to find out about their experience at the National Championship in Victoria, B.C., January 21-29. The team includes Second: Breanne Burgoyne (Clyde River), Lead: Rachel O’Connor (Charlottetown), Third: Kristie Rogers (New Haven) and Skip: Lauren Lenentine (New Dominion). Lauren Lenentine gave us the following update on behalf of the team.

After competing at Nationals, one word that could describe our emotions would be “proud”. We went to B.C. without any expectations but with a goal to make the Championship Pool. Once we achieved our goal, it was an incredible feeling. We were the first women’s team from PEI to make the championship round since 2012. That year, Sarah Fullerton finished 8th. This year, we finished 7th. We received many messages from home saying how proud everyone was, and those emotions transferred over to us.

The final result in the championship game was Alberta defeating Ontario 5-3.

Our biggest highlight on the ice would be beating B.C. and the reigning World Champions, Nova Scotia. It was a surreal moment. We all realized that we can compete at this level and we are not out of place.

Off ice, interacting with fellow athletes and sightseeing were our two favourite things. Victoria is a beautiful city, and it was nice to feel warm air for a change. We visited a coastal town called Sooke and it was breathtaking. As for meeting curlers, we made friends from across the country. In the evenings, we would all meet in the Player’s Lounge and play board games and ping pong. Some of our favourite memories were made off-ice!!

During the eight days of competition, we played 10 games together as a team. Most days we played two games, but some days we only played one. After the tournament concluded, we all took part in a mixed doubles tournament. We were paired with a male player and coach from another province/territory and we competed for top. I was paired with the lead from Northwest Territories. Unfortunately, all four of us were eliminated in the first round, but it was still an amazing experience.

Staying in “the zone” wasn’t a difficult task. As soon as you walk into the arena/club, you have a feeling that is indescribable. No matter how sore or tired you were, it all disappeared once we were on the ice.

We already knew most of the teams from the Atlantic provinces, but we met lots of new people from western provinces.

One thing that I gained personally from this experience is patience. We saw various strategies that differed from our own and by times it was frustrating. But I learned that if you wait, the right opportunities will come. Another thing we learned was how to preserve ourselves. We learned the importance of proper nutrition, hydration, and rest. These three things were crucial during the long week.

After what we just experienced, our goal next season is to win Junior Provincials and return to Canadian Juniors. We plan on travelling and competing in a few more events throughout the season to prepare for this.

Having our family and friends there as support made the experience even more special. No matter where you were, you could always hear the PEI chants! Being able to look into the stands and see all the familiar faces is a really great feeling. And without a doubt, we had the best fans!! I know their experience was just as amazing as ours.

Pat Quilty, our coach, won the Asham Coaching Award. This award is voted on by fellow coaches, and it is based on sportsmanship. Although I may be biased, I believe Pat was the best choice for this award because of all the hard work and dedication he has put into our team in the past eight years. He always shows respect for other curlers and coaches. It is very well deserved.

“I think it is an exceptional experience for our team because of our age. For such a young team to have such a good result is truly incredible. The way they handled the pressure was awesome. Having this experience can lead to many other great things.” – Coach Pat Quilty

Editors note: Thanks, Lauren, for the great follow-up story and thank you, Pat, for your input and all your efforts with the team. We extend our congratulations to you all. We will be cheering just as loudly next year. In following the game on social media, one of the journalists said that every time he reported something about Team Lenentine, all their PEI families and friends immediately “liked” his updates. We are high-performing fans – a great match for your team.

Final round set for Wed. Eve. Ladder League. Groves, Ferguson win round 3

We’re down to the fourth and last round at the Wednesday evening Ladder League, and, thanks to avoiding each and every storm this season (so far), we’ve got seven weeks left. We’ll fill it with a seven week round – the normal five weeks, plus rematches of the first two nights. In the event that we miss a week due to a storm, we’ll replace one of the two weeks at the end with that week’s draw, so you’ll get to play everyone at least once. But first, let’s get to the previous round.

The winners of the “A” pool in Round Three were the Greg Groves rink, who also won in round two. The team, which includes Donald Weeks, Cynthia Livingston, and Marjorie Matthews,  had only one loss in the round. They’ll be receiving gift certificates from Round 3 A pool sponsor Wally’s Pharmasave. Two teams, skipped by Angus Kennedy and Donald DeWolfe, both had two losses in the round. We have no budget for silver medals, so I won’t check which one actually came second. The Ray Biagé rink’s return to the A pool was short, and despite having beaten the first place team, and having some close games, they only had one other win, so they’ll be dropping down the ladder for the last round. Kelly Watts and her team also had only two wins, but they beat the Biagé team in their round robin game, and will stay in A. Also moving down to B will be the Gord Peters team, who only picked up one win in the round.

The Lauren Ferguson team started off the season in the A pool,  and will be returning there for the final round, having won ALL of their B pool games last round. The team, which includes Emma Coffin, Sierra Clyke, and Emily Sanderson, will be getting gift certificates courtesy of Red Island Baked Potato (over by Wally’s in the mall). The Greg Robertson and Rachel MacLean foursomes both had three wins, but Robertson beat MacLean 7-6 in their game, and will be moving up the ladder to A, while MacLean will stay put.

Here are the teams for Round Four, sponsored by MR Seafood:

A1-Greg Groves

Ch’town and Cornwall’s Shelley Ebbett beats Cornwall’s Shirley Berry to win PEI Senior Women’s Ch’ship

The Shelley Ebbett rink from the host Charlottetown Curling Complex and the Cornwall Curling Club doubled Cornwall’s Shirley Berry foursome 6-3 this morning to win the PEI Credit Unions Provincial Senior Women’s Curling Championship. Ebbett, whose team includes third Kim Pippy, second stone Karen Hardy, and lead Sandy Hope, with coach Bill Hope, were trailing 2-1 at the fourth end break, but quickly pulled ahead in the second half with a 2 point fifth end and a steal of two more in the sixth. The teams traded singles in the final two ends, giving Ebbett the 6-3 win. Other members of the runner-up Shirley Berry team are third Janice Murdoch, second Rebecca Rolfe, and lead Hanny MacLeod. Ebbett had won two sections of the modified triple knockout draw and would have taken the title with a win in the first championship round game on Sunday, but Berry forced today’s deciding game with a 7-6 extra-end win.

Best of luck to our winners at their championships!

Here is a thank-you note from event co-chairs Ernie and Ruth Stavert:

Ferguson-Logan Provincial Stick Curling Championship- Thank You
The Cornwall Curling Club’s reputation for event hosting and hospitality was at it finest during the recent Provincial Stick Curling Championship.
Although the stormy weather turned a 3 day event into a 5 day one and created more uncertainty than usual, everyone pulled together and worked through all the adjustments to schedules, food services, etc.
The host committee thanks the Club staff of Bev McCormick (mgr.), Lance Lowther (ice), Ray Biagé (custodian) and Kelly Arnold (bartender) for ensuring that everything was ready and ran smoothly.
The volunteer food services were capably handled by Myrna Sanderson with the assistance of Bernie Field, Barb Duncan-Biagé, Hélène LaPalme, Ann Greyborn, and Debbie Rhodenhizer.
Amy Duncan, Curl PEI Executive Director took care of registrations, the draw schedule, programs, and other administrative details.
Our official for the whole event was Etta Reid who put in long hours and kept everything running smoothly.
As always, we are indebted to Derek MacEwen who very professionally handled the web site and publicity.
Finally we thank our sponsors, Barry and Brenda Logan owners of the Montague Ferguson Logan Funeral Home, and Scott Annear manager of Morley Annear Trucking Limited for their continuing support..
Thanks to all,
Ernie and Ruth Stavert

Gorveatt wins PEI Senior Men’s title in extra end, Cornwall’s Berry fights back from 5-0 deficit to force Monday deciding Sr. Women’s game

The Phil Gorveatt rink from the host Charlottetown Curling Complex beat the Robert Campbell team from Charlottetown and the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Community Complex in Summerside 6-5 in an extra end to win the PEI Credit Unions Senior Men’s Championship this afternoon.

Photo (L-R): Mark Butler, Mike Dillon, Kevin Champion, Phil Gorveatt

Gorveatt, who won two of the three modified triple knockout sections and would have taken the title with a win in either of two championship games,  this afternoon, and 10 am Monday, was leading 5-2 after six ends, but the Campbell foursome, who would to have won both championship round games, tied the game and forced an extra end with a triple and a stolen deuce. Gorveatt, with hammer, scored a single in the extra end for the win, and the Senior Men’s title.

Other members of the Gorveatt rink are third Kevin Champion, second Mike Dillon, and lead Mark Butler. Playing on the runner-up Campbell team were third John Likely, second stone Mark O’Rourke, and lead Rod MacDonald.

There’s still one game left to play, at 10 am Monday, in the Senior Women’s championship. This  afternoon, the Shirley Berry rink from the Cornwall Curling Club came out of the fourth end break of the 1st of two possible women’s championship games trailing Shelley Ebbett and her host club and Cornwall club team 5-0, and needing a win to force a deciding game, while Ebbett, who won two sections of the modified triple knockout draw, would have taken the title with a win in the game.

Ebbett (left) and Berry (right)

Berry then scored a triple in the fifth, and stole a single in end six, and a deuce in the seventh end to grab a one-point lead. Ebbett was kept to a single point in end eight, resulting in an extra end, with last rock advantage to Berry, who picked up a single point for a 7-6 win, and a chance to play again in the sudden-death final at 10 am Monday.

The Gorveatt rink and the winner of the women’s sudden-death final will advance to the 2017 Everest Canadian Seniors Curling Championships, March 18-26 in Fredericton NB. The competition will be played at two facilities: the Capital Winter Club and Willie O’Ree Place, with the men’s and women’s finals both scheduled for the latter.

UPEI Men come from behind to tie, then steal extra end to advance to USports Cdn. Univ. Ch’ships

Photo (L-R): Alex MacFadyen, Brooks Roche, Kyle Holland, Chris Gallant

Both the UPEI Men and UPEI Women, skipped by Sabrina Smith, with all four members from the Cornwall Curling Club, had 3-3 round robin records, but only the men advanced to the playoff round, where they lost 8-5 to 1st place Memorial in the semi-finals, but managed to grab the third and final AUS men’s spot in the nationals by winning the Bronze Medal game. Memorial went on to double Dalhousie 10-5 in eight ends to win the Gold Medal game.

The St. FX women’s rink, which includes PEI native Lauren MacFadyen, downed St. FX 9-3 to capture the women’s Gold medal, while UNB beat Mt. A 8-3 to win the Bronze medal match and the third  AUS women’s playoff berth at the nationals.

Cornwall’s Shirley Berry rink advances to 2:30 pm PEI Seniors Ch’ship round game

Two teams – the Shelley Ebbett women’s rink, and the Phil Gorveatt men’s team, both from the host Charlottetown Curling Complex, have won two modified triple knockout sections, and are just one win away from winning their respective PEI Credit Unions Provincial Seniors (50 and over) Championships. A win in the draw (due to an ice issue, the women’s game will now take place at 2:30, while the men’s will go at 4), against the other section winners, the Shirley Berry women’s team from Cornwall, and the Robert Campbell men’s foursome from Charlottetown would give them the title. If Campbell or Berry win, they would force a deciding game on Monday at 10 am.

Gorveatt (left) and Campbell

Berry, whose team includes third Janice Murdoch, second Rebecca Rolfe, and lead Hanny MacLeod, punched her ticket to the championship round this morning by scoring a deuce in the final end to edge Iva Griffin and her Western Community and Maple Leaf curling club team by a 9-8 score, while Gorveatt won his second triple knockout section with an 8-3 victory over Campbell.

The eventual men’s and women’s winners will advance to the 2017 Everest Canadian Seniors Curling Championships, March 18-26 in Fredericton NB. The competition will be played at two facilities: the Capital Winter Club and Willie O’Ree Place, with the men’s and women’s finals both scheduled for the latter.

Four men’s and four women’s teams took part in the PEI championship.

UPEI Teams both finish round robin with 3-3 records at AUS Ch’ships. UPEI men advance to playoffs

Both the UPEI Men’s and Women’s teams had identical 3-3 win-loss records when round robin play wrapped up on Saturday at the Subway AUS Curling Championships at the Truro Curling Club, but only the UPEI Men, skipped by Chris Gallant, made the playoffs, finishing in fourth place, while the Women’s team, skipped by Cornwall’s Sabrina Smith, ended up in fifth place, with only four teams advancing to the playoff round. The UPEI Women had the same record as the UNB squad, but lost to UNB  in their opening match.

The UPEI men will now play first place Memorial in the semi-finals at 9 am Sunday. UNB, which includes former Cornwall Curling Club member Alex Sutherland, and Dalhousie play in the other semi, with both winners advancing to the Gold Medal game at 1 pm, with the losers squaring off in Bronze medal game at the same time.

The women’s 9 am semis see 1st place St. FX, which includes PEI native Lauren MacFadyen, take on 4th place UNB, and DAL play Mt. A in the 2nd vs 3rd game. The winners play in the Gold Medal game, and the losers go to the Bronze medal game, both at 1 pm.

This year the top 3 teams for each gender (it’s normally two) will represent the AUS at the U Sports / Curling Canada University Championships, hosted by the Lakehead University Thunderwolves, March 18-22 at the Fort William Curling Club in Thunder Bay Ont.

Callaghan/Vincent win Open, Cornwall’s Clarke/Stavert repeat as Women’s Division winners at PEI Stick Ch’ships

After a couple of weather delays during the event, the Ferguson-Logan Montague Funeral Home PEI Stick Curling Championships wrapped up Saturday evening at the Cornwall Curling Club, with the Walter Callaghan and John Vincent duo from the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton winning the 14 team, two pool single round robin Open (any combination of male/female) division, and, despite a slow start, losing three of their four games in the three-team double round robin Women’s division, the Gloria Clarke and Ruth Stavert team from the host club added yet another Women’s championship (their seventh out of the eight held to-date) to their collection.

Photos (L-R): Walter Callaghan, John Vincent

The top three teams in each Open Division pool advanced to the Open championship round, with the second place teams in one pool playing the third place teams in the other in the quarter-final round, with Howard Kerwin/William Power from Montague (4-2, B pool) beating Alvin Hackett/Victor Hogan  (4-2, A pool) from Alberton’s Western Community Curling Club 7-2,  and Cornwall’s Roddie MacLean/John Dunsford (4-2, B Pool) doubling defending champs Sterling Stratton and Barry Craswell, also from Cornwall (4-2, A Pool) by a 4-2 score.

The A pool winners, Vern Chowan/Ernie Stavert from Cornwall (5-1) then took on MacLean/Dunsford, winning  8-6, while the B pool winners, Callaghan and Vincent, also 5-1, beat Kerwin/Power 7-5 in the other semi-final. The semi-final winners Chowan/Stavert and Callaghan/Vincent then squared off in the final, with Callaghan/Vincent winning 3-1.

Photos (L-R): Gloria Clarke, Ruth Stavert

All three teams advanced to the championship round in the Women’s Division, with third place finishers Clarke and Stavert (1-3) beating 2nd place finishers Ann Barwise and Audrey Callaghan from Western Community (2-2) by an 11-3 score in the semi-final, taking four points in the third end, stealing three in the fourth, and singles in five and six for the win. e final against first place

Clarke and Stavert then took on the first place team from the double round robin, the Myrna Craswell and Elaine Hughes duo, in the final, stealing four points in the final end for a 9-5 win. Clarke/Craswell have now won.

The top four Open Division (Callaghan/Vincent, Chowan/Stavert, Kerwin/Power and MacLean Dunsford), and top two Women’s Division (Clarke/Stavert and Craswell/Hughes) teams advance to the Maritime Stick Curling Championships, March 14-16 at Curl Moncton. The winning and runner-up Open Division teams (Callaghan/Vincent and Chowan/Stavert) are also invited to participate in the Canadian Open Stick Curling Championship, March 23-26 at the Bluenose Curling Club in New Glasgow NS.

In stick curling there are two curlers per team, who deliver their rocks with delivery sticks, with each team member delivering from opposite ends. Sweeping is allowed only from the hog line to the back of the house at the playing end. Two curlers, one from each team, alternately deliver 6 stones each per end, while their teammate skips that end. The roles are then reversed, and the partners deliver the stones back. No stone may be removed from play until the fourth stone of each end. Games are six ends and take about an hour to play. For more information on stick curling, visit www.canadianstickcurling.ca

“C” Finals set at Seniors: Cornwall’s Berry vs Griffin, Campbell vs Gorveatt

The final qualifiers for the championship round at the PEI Credit Unions Provincial Seniors Curling Championships will be determined with the 10 am Sunday draw at the Charlottetown Curling Complex. The Shelley Ebbett rink from the host club, who won the women’s A and B events, did not advance to the C final, so there will be at least one women’s championship game, at 2 pm Sunday. If the Ebbett team wins that game, against the winner of the C qualifier, they will take the championship game. If not, there will be a winner-take-all final between Ebbett and the C event winner, at 10 am Monday.

Shirley Berry

Iva Griffin

The C final will see Cornwall’s Shirley Berry rink take on the Iva Griffin foursome from the Western and Maple Leaf clubs. Berry came on strong in the second half of her C semi-final game this evening against Ebbett, taking a triple in the sixth, and a deuce in the eighth end for a 9-7 win. Griffin built a commanding lead early in her game against Cornwall’s Debbie Rhodenhizer, taking five points in the first end, and stealing singles in the next 2, with a final score of 11-2 in six ends.

Photos (L-R) Phil Gorveatt, Robert Campbell

The A and B winners, Phil Gorveatt and Robert Campbell, respectively, from the host club will face off in the men’s C final, with the winner having the upper hand in the championship round, being able to win it with a victory in either the 2 pm Sunday or the 10 am Monday game, while their opponent would have to win both. Campbell scored five points in the first end of his C semi against Cornwall’s Bill Hope, going on to win 9-2 in five ends, while Gorveatt scored triples in ends 1 and 6 in an 8-3 victory of Blair Jay and his Silver Fox team.

Ch’town’s Ebbett and Gorveatt rinks win 1st section finals at PEI Credit Unions Seniors Curling Ch’ships

The first two draws were played Friday afternoon and evening at the PEI Credit Unions Provincial Senior Men’s and Women’s Curling Championships, for curlers age 50 and over, at the Charlottetown Curling Complex, with four men’s and four women’s teams competing. The first of three section finals in the modified triple knockout draw was determined in the evening draw in two very close games, with the Shelley Ebbett rink from the host club stealing a deuce in the final end to edge Cornwall’s Shirley Berry foursome 8-7 to win the women’s “A” final, and the Phil Gorveatt team, also from the host Charlottetown Curling Complex, scoring three points with hammer in an extra end to double Blair Jay from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Community Complex in Summerside 6-3 in the men’s.

Action in the “A” finals (Larry Richards photo)

Berry won her opener 6-3 over Iva Griffin and her Prince County team from the Western Community and Maple Leaf curling clubs, while Ebbett scored five points in an extra end to defeat Cornwall’s Debbie Rhodenhizer 11-6. In the men’s openers, Gorveatt edged Charlottetown clubmate Robert Campbell 7-6, and Jay beat Charlottetown and Cornwall’s Bill Hope 7-3.

With the “modified” triple knockout format, section winners also drop down to compete in subsequent sections, and a win in two sections gives a team a big advantage going into the two game championship round against the section winners, as they would win the championship if they took either game, while their opponent would have to win both. If Gorveatt or Ebbett were to win all three sections, their respective championship round would not be needed.

Play in the 10 am Saturday draw will see Hope play Gorveatt, and Campbell take on Jay in men’s play, while Griffin will face Ebbett, and Cornwall’s Rhodenhizer and Berry will face off in women’s action, with the men’s and women’s winners advancing to the “B” finals at 2 pm.

The “C” semi-finals go at 6 pm Saturday, with the “C” finals taking place at 10 am Sunday. The championship round games, if needed, go at 2 pm Sunday and, if required, 10 am Monday.

This year’s winners will advance to the 2017 Everest Canadian Seniors Curling Championships, March 18-26 in Fredericton NB. The competition will be played at two facilities: the Capital Winter Club and Willie O’Ree Place, with the men’s and women’s finals both scheduled for the latter.

Cornwall’s Craswell/Hughes advance to PEI Stick Women’s final, Callaghan/Vincent still undefeated in Open Div.,

Only two Open Division round robin draws and the Open and Women’s championship rounds remain to be played at the Ferguson-Logan Montague Funeral Home PEI Stick Curling Championships here at the Cornwall Curling Club.

Myrna Craswell

Elaine Hughes

The host club team of Myrna Craswell and Elaine Hughes finished in first place in the Women’s double round robin, with a 3-1 win-loss record, and have earned a bye into the 3:45 pm Friday finals. The other two women’s teams – Ann Barwise and Audrey Callaghan from the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton (2-2) and defending champions Gloria Clarke and Ruth Stavert from Cornwall (1-3) will square off in the semi-final at 2 pm, with the winning duo facing Craswell/Hughes in the championship game.

The Western Community Curling Club duo of Walter Callaghan and John Vincent is the only undefeated (5-0) team in the 14 team, two pool Open Division (any combination of male/female) round robin, and will finish in first place in their pool, as the 4 next closest teams all have two losses.

Walter Callaghan

John Vincent

Leading the other pool is the host club team of Vern Chowan and Ernie Stavert with a 4-1 win-loss record. Defending champions Sterling Stratton and Barry Craswell, who were slow out of the gate, losing their first two games, made a remarkable recovery, reeling off four consecutive wins to finish round-robin play at 4-2, very much in playoff contention. Joe Gill and Merrill Cronin (Cornwall) and Alvin Hackett and Victor Hogan (Western) also have 2 losses in the pool, with one game left to play.

On Friday, the Open Division round robin wraps up with draws at 10 and 11:15 am. The second and third place teams in opposite pools square off in the quarter-finals at 12:30, with the winners of the quarters playing one of the first place teams in the semi-finals at 2 pm. The winners of the 2 semis advance to the championship final at 3:45.

All times are subject to change, particularly with the forecast storm.

At the end of the competition, the top four Open Division, and top two Women’s Division teams advance to the Maritime Stick Curling Championships, March 14-16 at Curl Moncton. The winning and runner-up Open Division teams are also invited to participate in the Canadian Open Stick Curling Championship, March 23-26 at the Bluenose Curling Club in New Glasgow NS.

For more information on stick curling, visit www.canadianstickcurling.ca.

The PEI Credit Unions Provincial Seniors Curling Championships, with men’s and women’s divisions for curlers 50 years of age and over, take place Friday February 10 to Monday February 13 at the Charlottetown Curling Complex. Four men’s and four women’s rinks have signed up. One men’s team and three women’s rinks have Cornwall Curling Club members.

Live results will be available at: peicurling.com/scoreboard/#!/competitions/2278

If a team wins all three sections, they are declared champions on Sunday morning, without the championship round. A team that wins two sections will play the other section winner in the championship round, and will win the championship if they win either championship game, while their opponent would have to win both.

For more info on our Club’s playdowns, contact Kimberley MacDonald at kimberleym@eastlink.ca

Here are the eligibility rules for the national Travelers event. Your team would have to meet them in order to play in the provincials and go to the nationals.

Travelers Curling Club Championship Eligibility Requirements
(subject to change – the latest info is at: www.curling.ca/2015travelers/about/eligibility-requirements)

We trust that all participants will respect the intent of this championship which is for curling clubs to engage their members to participate in a club championship to declare a club champion to represent the curling club. The event is formulated for true club championship teams, not past or present elite. The objective is to support the development of curling across Canada. We keep this objective in mind as we set our eligibility requirements and on-ice rules, including Curling Canada’s Rules of Curling for General Play. Travelers Canada reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to exclude any team that violates this spirit and intent as it pertains to the rules below.

  1. The curling club, represented by the team, must be affiliated with its provincial/territorial curling association and all dues must be paid in full. The players of any club champion team must be members in good standing of the affiliated curling club. Any player can be a member of more than one affiliated curling club, but shall declare one “home club” for this competition.
  2. Each club will declare a men’s team and women’s team of FOUR (4) players to represent their club through either their normal league or club championship process, or through a designated Travelers Curling Club Championship competition within the club. The declared teams, through either process, MUST have at least three players who have played together in a sanctioned club league during the current season. If a replacement fourth player is used, (i.e., a player who did not play regularly on that team throughout the season) that player MUST play lead. Players who play exclusively in a major/super league without playing in another sanctioned club league are ineligible to compete. Clubs that only have mixed or open leagues (i.e., no men’s and women’s leagues) must contact their association for approval to participate.
  3. Each team will be allowed only one player who has played in a Juniors’, Men’s (Brier), Women’s (Scotties) or Seniors’provincial/territorial event in the current or previous four curling seasons or participated in a Grand Slam event in the current or previous four curling seasons. No player on the team can have played in a Canadian Juniors, Men’s, Women’s or Senior’s Canadian Championship for those years (i.e. national competitors are excluded as regular or replacement players on the team).

* Exception – Provinces/Territories [e.g. PEI] with an open provincial/territory event will be permitted 1 player who has placed top 25% in a Juniors’, Men’s (Brier), Women’s (Scotties) or Seniors’ provincial/territory event in the current or previous 4 curling seasons, or participated in a Grand Slam event in the current or previous 4 curling seasons.

  1. Players who competed in the 2016 Travelers Curling Club Championship national event are ineligible to compete in the 2017 playdowns.
  2. All games will be 8 ends with ties being decided by a full extra end.
  3. Once a four person team has been declared a club champion, a maximum of 1 replacement/substitute player from the club can play lead.
  4. Each team must be comprised of 4 players aged 19 or over, as of November 1st, 2016. Provincial/Territorial curling associations may adopt a more restrictive age criteria if they choose.
  5. Curling Canada has the sole authority to grant exceptions to these rules in extraordinary circumstances. Before exercising this discretion, Curling Canada will consult with the relevant provincial/territorial curling association, and will notify the provincial/territorial association in writing of any decisions regarding exceptions that are granted.

PEI Stick Curling Ch’ships start Tuesday, here at the Cornwall Curling Club

The PEI Stick Curling Championships, sponsored by Ferguson-Logan Montague Funeral Home, for two-person teams with Open (any combination male/female) and Women’s divisions, is set for February 7-9 (mornings and afternoons) at the Cornwall Curling Club. 14 Open division and three Women’s division teams from four Island curling clubs are taking part.

Defending champions are the Sterling Stratton/Barry Craswell Open Division team, and the Gloria Clarke/Ruth Stavert women’s duo. Both curl out of the host club, and both are back this year.

The Open Divison will play a single round robin with 2 pools, advancing the top 3 finishers in each pool to a championship round. The Women’s division will play a double round robin, with the 2nd and 3rd place finishers advancing to a semi-final, and the semi-final winner playing the first place team in the final.

The top four Open Division, and top two Women’s Division teams advance to the Maritime Stick Curling Championships, March 14-16 at Curl Moncton. The winning and runner-up Open Division teams are also invited to participate in the Canadian Open Stick Curling Championship, March 23-26 at the Bluenose Curling Club in New Glasgow NS.

For more information on stick curling, visit www.canadianstickcurling.ca.

Cornwall’s Bill & Sandy Hope rinks to compete in both the Maritime and the Cdn. Masters ch’ships

Ted MacFadyen rink repeats as PEI Masters Men’s Champs

The Ted MacFadyen rink from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Community Complex had two opportunities today to repeat as PEI Masters (age 60+) Men’s Champs, and, thanks to a tie-breaking four-ender in the seventh, they did it on the first try, beating the Bill Hope squad from the Charlottetown and Cornwall clubs by an 8-4 score this morning at the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary. MacFadyen had won two sections of the modified triple-knockout draw, giving him a “double-life” in the championship round, taking the title with a win in either game, while Hope would have had to win the first game to force a 2 pm deciding match, which is no longer needed.

The winning MacFadyen rink includes third Lou Nowlan, second stone Earle Proude, and lead Alan Montgomery.

Hope’s teammates on the runner-up rink are third Craig Mackie, second David Murphy, and lead Bill Doherty. Seven men’s teams took part in the championship.

Photo from 2016 event: (L-R) Masters Women’s Winners: Sandy Hope (skip), Shelley Ebbett (3rd), Debbie Rhodenhizer (2nd), Arleen Harris (lead)

The rink of Sandy Hope (skip), Shelley Ebbett (3rd), Debbie Rhodenhizer (2nd), and Arleen Harris (lead) from the Cornwall Curling Club are the repeat women’s champions, by default, as they were the only entry.

Winning and runner-up teams earn the right advance to the Maritime Masters Curling Championships, March 16-18 at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Community Complex in Summerside, while the winning Men’s and Women’s team, or the runners-up should they choose not to attend, also earn the right to compete in the Canadian Masters, April 3-9  in Guelph, Ontario.

The winning Ted MacFadyen men’s rink will be attending only the Maritime Masters, while the runner-up Bill Hope team, and the Sandy Hope women’s champions will attend both the Maritime and the Canadian championships.

Ted MacFadyen vs Cornwall’s Bill Hope for Masters Men’s title on Monday

The defending Ted MacFadyen rink from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Community Complex in Summerside has now won both the B and C sections at the PEI Master Men’s Curling Championship, for curlers age 60 and over, and will have two opportunities to repeat as champion, at 10 am and 2 pm Monday at the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary.

Photo by Craig Mackie: Ted MacFadyen

His opponent, the A section winner – Bill Hope and his Charlottetown/Cornwall rink, would have to win both games to take the title.

Photo by Craig Mackie: Bill Hope

MacFadyen was fast out of the gate in today’s “C” final of the modified triple knockout draw, taking four points in the first end against the host club’s Clair Sweet, and followed it up with a stolen triple in the second end. A triple in the sixth meant it was handshake time, with an 11-4 final score. MacFadyen beat Hope 6-2 in the “C” semis, while Sweet eliminated Summerside’s Dale Cannon by a 5-3 score.

The defending champion Sandy Hope rink from Cornwall have won the women’s championship by default, as they were the only entry.

The Sandy Hope rink and the winning and runner-up men’s teams advance to the Maritime Masters, March 16-18 at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Community Complex in Summerside.

The winning Men’s and the Sandy Hope Women’s team also earn the right to compete in the Canadian Masters, April 3-9  in Guelph, Ontario.
