Icemaking underway!

The ice plant has been started, and our head icemaker Lance Lowther is busy, as you can see in the picture, putting on the base coats. You will also note that the rafters have changed colour, and are now painted a nice white, and the the cement part of the walls at the back has also been repainted. New carpet for the ice house area is being installed next Tuesday and Wednesday.  The sponsor signs will have to be put back up, but we’re on schedule for ice availability on Oct. 11.  After the base coats are on, the ice is painted white, and then lines and circles are added, and top coats are applied, before the pebble is put on and you can hit the ice!

Cornwall membership rates same as last season!

rates

The Cornwall Curling Club Board of Directors has, again this year, voted to maintain last season’s membership rates. If you are comparing rates with other facilities, note that ALL our curling memberships allow practice time when ice is available, allow you to participate (at extra cost) in provincial championships. Curling is a very reasonably-priced sport – curl one night all season for about the same price as two rounds of golf at a high-end course.

Payment terms for adult memberships:  1/2 due on registration and 1/2 due on December 1. A $10.00 service charge applies to payments received after Dec 1. Youth memberships are due at registration. Memberships may be paid with Debit, Visa, Mastercard, cheque, or cash.

Note that HST and a  Canadian Curling Association/Curl PEI fee (was $15 last season – this season’s fee to be confirmed) will be added to the following rates:

ADULT MEMBERSHIPS:

  • One Evening Draw per week $210
  • Two Daytime sessions per week $210
  • Adult Unlimited Night only $320
  • Adult Unlimited Daytime only $290
  • Adult Unlimited (Day and night) $350
  • Couple Unlimited $600
  • Full-time Student (19+) unlimited $230
  • Commercial League (Monday at 8:30 pm): $650/team

YOUTH MEMBERSHIPS:

  • Little Rockers (ages 6-7):
    • One session Oct-Dec or Jan-Mar $50
    • For both sessions $85
  • Novice (8-12) & Juniors (13-20) full season $125
  • Junior membership, plus one evening draw $230

OTHER:

  • Social Memberships – attend club events, curl in club spiels (at extra cost): $40
  • Non-Members “walk-on” fee per draw (if space available, or called as a spare). HST Included.
    • Junior $5
    • Daytime/Nighttime $10 or 10 passes for $80.
  • Locker Rentals (may be shared) $30 for season.

Drop-in Policy

We welcome “drop-in” (non-member) curlers, particularly in our 10 am weekday draws, where teams are made up as players arrive, and also as spares in our other draws. If your spare is a Club member, they don’t have to pay anything extra, but, if your spare is not a member, they are required to pay a “drop-in” fee (just like at a golf course or health club where you don’t have a membership, you are required to pay when brought in as a substitute for a member)

If you don’t have the time to curl here regularly as a member (or are just in town for a few days), and show up before a draw, there is always a chance that we can find a spot for you. If you are able to curl for one entire single-entry draw session (six or seven weeks), we may be able to fit you in, too, as sometimes a member may know in advance that they will be absent for a particular draw – contact the Club Manager. In all these cases, “drop-in” curlers (or their skips who contacted them) are required to pay the drop-in rate at the bar before going on the ice, and skips are required to let the bartender know that a drop-in spare is being used.

Drop-in rates are $10 per game for ALL adult curlers for both evening and daytime draws  or $5 for juniors, taxes in. For those who “drop-in” frequently, a pack of 10 drop-in fees is available at a discounted rate of $80. Drop-in fees DO include the HST.

The 10 am daytime draw, where teams are made up each day as players arrive, is a special case. Club members regularly in the draw have discs that they drop in a cup labeled with the position that they want to play. Drop-in (non-members) for this draw are required to obtain a chit for this purpose from the office by paying the  drop-in fee. It will have their name on it, and will be turned in by the drawmaster to the office after it is used.

Ice Booking Policy

Open ice can be booked for use by members, regardless of type of membership purchased, without additional cost, on a first come first served basis. Open ice can also be booked for use by non-members for a standard rental fee on the same first come first served basis. Members are encouraged to book early to avoid disappointment and asked to notify the club if a change of plans prevents you from keeping your booking.

Ice and facilities rentals

Book our ice and/or hall facilities for your next office party, family bonspiel, or fun time with friends!
Renting one sheet of ice for 8 curlers for two hours is a bargain at under $10 a person taxes in (it’s cheaper than adult bowling, the movies and many other activities!). We provide the renters with curling brushes, and sliders – just bring clean sneakers, and wear stretchy or loose pants. We can also provide basic curling instruction, and bar services are available, too!
We can seat up to 100 people in our clubhouse area. Facilities are also available for rental in the upstairs Civic Centre hall. We have a number of catering options available, or you can use our kitchen facilities at no additional cost.

Here are our ice rental prices (HST will be added). Contact us for hall options or different number of sheets or rental times.

1 sheet for 2 hours: $70

4 sheets for 2 hours: $170

4 sheets for 4 hours: $275

4 sheets for 8 hours: $485

Call us at 902-566-4427 to book, or for different sheet quantities, catering or additional hall options.

Commercial League

Our Commercial League is a great way to get together with your co-workers (outside of work) or friends on a weekly basis. It runs Monday nights from 8:30-10:30. Price is $650 + HST for the team for the season. The curlers can change from week to week if you want, so you can rotate many curlers and handle work travel and vacations, too! Contact your employer to put in a team, or have your co-workers all chip in!

trycurling

If you’re interested in trying the fun Olympic sport of curling, now’s your chance!

The Cornwall Curling Club would like to help you take that first step – for FREE, with no obligation!!

You’re invited to take part in our Open House, free Adult Curling School, and new members registration

  • Tuesday, October 11
  • Wednesday, October 12
  • Thursday, October 13

6:30 to 8:30 each evening.  Come any one, two, or all three nights – there will be instruction at varying levels each night.

school2003

Dress in warm clothes with loose or stretchy pants and bring clean indoor shoes. Loaner sliders and brushes will be provided. Arrive at least 15 minutes prior to start time to ensure you are registered and ready to go. The evening instruction is intended for adults only – younger curlers receive training as part of their ongoing program.

We’ll also tell you why curling is such a great sport, and why you should join our Club! We emphasize the social and recreational aspects of curling, but we have provincial champions, too!

Reasons to take up the sport of curling

Whether you’re a brand new curler, or have years of experience, the Cornwall Curling Club has a spot for you! You don’t have to live in Cornwall to join – we have members from all over Queen’s County.

We offer daytime curling, as well as evening single entry and league curling, starting Oct. 19, along with fun weekend bonspiels and Friday night Drop-In events, in a social atmosphere.

Curling is a sport that anyone, at almost any age, can play, and includes options for those with varying degrees of mobility impairment. It’s not expensive, in comparison with other sports that require much more equipment, officials, and high registration fees. Cornwall has team (any combination of male and/or female curlers) and individual entry (mixed male and female) draws, and daytime 2-person “stick” curling too.  The sport is great exercise, increasing flexibility, and providing cardio, with over 2 miles walked in a typical curling game, and lots of sweeping exercise, too!

20130406_29

Joining a curling club is also a great social activity – allowing you to get together regularly with your friends and coworkers, and make new friends and business contacts. After each game, the two teams involved sit down at the table together, and share a drink or two, with the first “sociable” round, by custom,  purchased by the winning team. Weekend bonspiels provide a fun atmosphere for the recreational curler, with great music, off-ice activities, and food thrown in, all for a very reasonable cost (check out our website’s Photo  section to see pictures from some of our legendary funspiels!). There are also cashspiels and provincial championships for those who want to take their game up a notch (who knows, you could even be in the Olympics some day!)

If you’d like more info on why curling rocks, check out these great videos from the Canadian Curling Association.

Give curling a try  – you won’t regret it!

For more info, visit CornwallCurling.com, email info@cornwallcurling.com or call 566-4427.

 See you on the ice!!

The Cornwall Curling Club plans to to hold the Saturday morning U16 junior development league again this season. This league is open to curlers from all clubs, and  is intended for curlers aged 11-15. Consideration may be given to curlers outside of this age.

satmornjr
The target is 32 curlers (eight teams) who have had previous curling instruction. It may be possible to accommodate one or two additional teams if there is interest.  If there are more teams than can be accommodated priority will be given to returning teams with at least three previous members. Returning teams are asked to register for the league on returning member registration evening, October 5, to secure their spot, or contact Bev McCormick at the club (902)-566-4427.
Rules (same as last year):

1. Round Robin format

2. 6 end games

3.  Score will be tabulated as follows:  5 points for a win.  2.5 each for a tie.  2 points for each end won.  Points for the difference in score up to a maximum of 5.
4. Coaches / Chaperones can go out to the ice when they see an opportunity to teach their team. The spirit of the rule is to allow the coaches to help their teams think about different possibilities and learn, not just call the shots for the team.  Other reasons may include helping their teams with etiquette, speeding up play or perhaps interpreting the rules.
Entry fee is $35.00 + HST per person for seven weeks.  A $15.00 per person Curl PEI fee will also be collected if you have not paid this fee for this season at any club.
Games will begin at 09:30 Saturday morning and be six ends.
The tentative dates scheduled for the league are:   Oct 22Nov 5thNov 19thDec 10thDec 17thJan 7thJan 21st
Other possible dates at this time are Jan. 28, Feb. 4 and Mar. 18.  These may be needed due to weather or rentals or if more than eight teams are interested.
