Close call for leader Ontario in game vs Cornwall’s Veronica Smith at Canadian Mixed (Curling Canada)

Undefeated Saskatchewan and Ontario were forced to steal their way out of trouble on Tuesday night at the 2017 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship in Yarmouth, N.S., as British Columbia’s Wes Craig and Prince Edward Island’s Veronica Smith threatened to end the top teams’ winning streak.

British Columbia second Miles Craig and lead Marike Van Osch sweep a rock down the ice at the Mariners Centre in Yarmouth, N.S., during round robin action at the 2017 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship (Curling Canada photo)

Saskatchewan’s Brady Scharback trailed Craig and his young B.C. foursome after seven ends, and only managed to score a single in the eighth, forcing the teams to battle it out in an extra end. Scharback was able to steal a point for the 7-6 win and a 4-0 record, tied with Northern Ontario at the top of Pool B.

In another tense game, P.E.I.’s Smith – the only female skip at this year’s championship – threw a scare into Ontario’s Wayne Tuck. Smith is just a year out of juniors, and the other members of her team are still competing at the junior level. But that didn’t stop them from putting the pressure on the Pool A leaders.

Smith, with sister Sabrina at second, Tyler Smith (no relation) at third, and lead Dylan Lowery, stole the first end and led 4-2 after five ends. With the score tied after six, Tuck stole three points in the seventh and ran P.E.I. out of rocks for a 7-4 win, his fourth straight of the round robin.

[PEI picked up their first win, against Nova Scotia’s Paul Flemming rink, in the afternoon draw, scoring 3 points in the final end for a 6-5 come-from-behind victory. The Island squad, with a 1-3 win-loss record, wrap up round robin play today, against NL at 10 am, and the Yukon at 7 pm.]

Saskatchewan and Ontario, along with Northern Ontario’s Trevor Bonot, are the only remaining undefeated teams in the competition. Bonot scored a 7-4 win over Quebec’s Martin Ferland in Pool B action.

In other games on Tuesday night, New Brunswick’s Charlie Sullivan stole four points in the first two ends on the way to a 6-4 win over the Whitehorse Curling Club’s Robert Smallwood. Adam Boland, from St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, scored five points in the fourth end and never trailed in an 11-8 win over Nova Scotia’s Paul Flemming.

Earlier in the day, another young gun – Braden Calvert of Manitoba, a two-time national junior champion – blasted through the opposition, defeating Nunavut 13-2 and British Columbia 7-2 to stay close to the leaders.

The round robin continues on Wednesday, with games at 10 a.m., 2:30 p.m. and 7 p.m., Atlantic Time. Of particular interest will be the match-up between the undefeated Pool B leaders, Saskatchewan and Northern Ontario in the first draw of the day.

Openings for teams in the Wednesday evening Ladder League

Do you have a team that’s still looking to curl this year? We currently have ten teams, and have openings for 2, 4, or 6 more teams in our Wednesday evening Ladder League. This team-entry league is less competitive than our Tuesday evening league, and has two pools, with 2-3 teams from the A pool dropping down to the B pool after each round, while 2-3 teams from the B pool go up to the A pool. A less experienced team may be in the B pool the entire season, while a more experienced team could stay in the A pool, which helps keep the games closer.

Draw times are 6:30 and 8:30 pm, and you curl in BOTH timeslots on alternating nights in each round. Teams stay together all season. As many of our curlers curl only in this draw, we want to avoid byes, so, the odd numbered team in would be waitlisted until another team arrives.

The next round starts on November 30. New teams would play another new team in a qualifier game on November 23, with the winner going to the A pool for round 2, and the runner-up going to the B pool. Teams can be all male, all female, or any combination, and juniors are welcome too. There are prizes for the A and B pool winners at the end of each round. Memberships would be pro-rated to your start date.

Teams are expected to show up each week, and find spares (we have a list) if players can’t make it. Only one original member, and three players in total, are required to avoid a default.

If you are interested or would like more info, call the Club at (902) 566-4427, or email cornwallcurling@eastlink.ca.

Canadian Mixed gets underway Sunday in Yarmouth. Cornwall’s Veronica Smith rink representing PEI (Curling Canada)

The 54th edition of the Canadian Mixed Curling Championship gets underway Sunday at the Mariners Centre in Yarmouth, N.S.

yarmouth

Canada’s top mixed curling teams open play in the 2017 Canadian Mixed Championship at the Mariners Centre in Yarmouth, N.S. (Photo, courtesy Rick Allwright)

The Mixed, which began in Toronto in 1964, has been won a leading 11 times by Alberta, while Nova Scotia has captured seven titles — by skips Mark Dacey (2002 and 2010), Paul Flemming (1999 and 2003), Steve Ogden (1995 and 1998) and Scott Saunders (1993).

It will mark the first time that Yarmouth has hosted a Curling Canada championship, but it will be the third time the Canadian Mixed has been staged in Nova Scotia, following the 1977 and 2002 editions, which were both held at the Mayflower Curling Club in Halifax.

Once again this year, the championship will feature 14 teams (10 provinces plus Northern Ontario, Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Yukon) seeded and separated into two pools of seven teams each (based on their won-lost records in last year’s Canadian Mixed at Toronto), who will first play a round robin within their pool.

At the conclusion of the round robin, the top four teams in each pool advance to the Championship Round, when the teams play the teams from the opposite pool, carrying forward their full won-lost records.

Meanwhile, the bottom three teams in each pool will go to the Seeding Round, where they will compete against the three teams from the opposite pool. These teams also carry forward their full won-lost records.

The Championship Round concludes on Friday and will be followed by two semifinals Saturday morning at 10 a.m. AT, pitting 1 vs. 4 and 2 vs. 3. The two winners then advance to the final Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. while the two losing teams meet in the bronze-medal game at the same time.

Final results will determine seeding for next year’s Canadian Mixed at Swan River, Man.

All games throughout the competition are eight ends. Also, no tiebreaker games will be played at the conclusion of either round. Instead, any unsolvable ties for position after head-to-head results will be determined by accumulated Draw Shot results.

The winning team will then represent Canada at the 2017 World Mixed Curling Championship, Oct. 6-14 at Champéry, Switzerland. Last year’s winning Canadian Mixed team, skipped by Alberta’s Mick Lizmore, competed in last month’s World Mixed Curling Championship in Kazan, Russia. After winning its group with a 7-0 mark, then beating Czech Republic in the round of 16, Canada lost its quarter-final match to Scotland, 6-5 and was eliminated from medal contention.

image4Every province, plus Northern Ontario, has won at least one Canadian Mixed Curling Championship since 1964.

This year, Nova Scotia will be skipped by two-time (1999, 2003) Mixed champion and veteran Brier competitor Paul Flemming of Halifax. The lineup also includes several world junior champions — skips Braden Calvert of Manitoba (2015), who is also a two-time (2014, 2015) Canadian Junior champion, Evan Asmussen of Alberta (2012) and New Brunswick’s Charlie Sullivan (1988), another Brier veteran who was the silver medallist in 1990 to Ontario’s Ed Werenich at the Canadian men’s curling championship, when playing third for Jim Sullivan.

Also in the field is Ontario’s Wayne Tuck Jr. and his team from Ilderton, the runner-up at the 2009 Canadian Mixed, and Manitoba’s Kerri Einarson, playing third for Calvert, who will be skipping her own team at the 2016 Home Hardware Canada Cup at Brandon, Man., Nov. 30-Dec. 4.

Over the years, the Mixed has been won by other well-known skips such as Jeff Stoughton, Rick Folk, Rick Lang, Kevin Koe, Mark Nichols, Colleen Jones, Barry Fry, Jean-Michel Ménard, Robert Campbell and Shannon Kleibrink, who became the only female to win the Mixed as skip in 2004 at Schumacher (Timmins), Ont.

This year, Prince Edward Island’s Veronica Smith, a three-time provincial junior champion, will try to join Kleibrink as the second female skip to win the event.

Saskatchewan’s Larry McGrath is the only three-time winning skip, having won the Mixed in 1967, 1968 and 1971.

Order a name tag, and let everybody know your name!

The Daytime Curlers have taken the initiative to provide name tags for anyone in the Club that wants one. The signup sheet is on the bulletin board and the cost is $5.00 (taxes in). Name tags are very useful so that new members know who you are, and are also great when you are curling in bonspiels at other clubs.

Former Cornwall junior members winning on the World Curling Tour!

We are pleased to report that former Cornwall junior members Sarah Fullerton, Meaghan Hughes, and Michelle McQuaid were winners this past weekend at a World Curling Tour event in Ontario. Another former Cornwall member, Kiri Campbell, who is A.J. Campbell’s daughter, is now living in Ottawa and playing lead for the Danielle Inglis rink. They made it to the semi-finals, where they lost to the rink from Japan that played the Robyn MacPhee rink in the final. A.J. is now helping to develop new junior curlers, coaching the Alexis Burris rink from our Club, who finished in the money at a Canada Games development spiel in Saint John on the weekend. It’s great to see the impact our junior program is having!

PEI’s Robyn MacPhee rink wins Royal LePage OVCA Women’s Fall Classic in Ontario

PEI’s Robyn MacPhee foursome defeated the Ayami Ogasawara team from Sapporo Japan by a 6-2 score this afternoon to win the final of the 11th anniversary Royal LePage OVCA Women’s Fall Classic, a World Curling Tour event, in Kemptville Ontario. Team MacPhee, which includes third Sarah Fullerton, second Meaghan Hughes, and lead Michelle McQuaid, goes home with $5,500, out of a total purse of $17,500 in the 24 team event.

This is Michelle McQuaid’s 2nd victory in the OVCA Fall Classic, winning in 2013 with skip Susanne Birt, third Shelly Bradley, and lead Susan McInnis.

MacPhee knocked out 2011 event winner Sherry Middaugh of Coldwater ON with an 8-7 win in the quarter-finals, and then defeated Hollie Nichol of Ottawa 5-3 in the semis, while Ogasawara beat Ottawa’s Danielle Inglis squad, which includes PEI native Kiri Campbell at lead stone, by a 5-4 score in an extra end in her semi-final game.
