Curling 101- Rocks, Rings, Ice!

100_1183

There was a great turnout for all three sessions of “Curling 101” on Saturday! These were free on-ice “Introduction to Curling” sessions for children and their parents/guardians. Both those who may have attended “Rocks and Rings” school gym sessions, as well as the general public, were invited.  It looked like everyone really enjoyed it!

Thanks to everyone who helped out, including Amy Duncan from Curl PEI, Bev for collecting the names, Board members Brent,  Edgar, Colleen, and Paula for helping out on and off the ice, Paula for taking the pictures, along with all the volunteer instructors, including Angela Sanderson, Yvonne Barbour, Sarah Fullerton, Emma Coffin, Gillian Barbrick, Katelyn Burgoyne, Baily O’Grady, Lauren Lenentine, Kaleigh Mackay, Kristie Rogers, and any that I missed (let us know, and we’ll add you!).

100_1188To the parents and kids who attended and might be interested in the kids learning more about curling, there are new junior instructional sessions starting in early January, so contact the Club at 566-4427, or info@cornwallcurling.com (or drop in!) for details and prices.

Cornwall Curling Club congratulates its Canadian Champions

A big crowd of curlers, family, and well-wishers was on hand Tuesday evening here at the Cornwall Curling Club to honour Cornwall’s first ever Canadian Champs at a Curling Canada event, the Lisa Jackson team, winners of the Travelers Curling Club Championship.

Bill Hope was Master of Ceremonies for the event, and welcomed the team to the reception area.

Bill welcomed team members Lisa Jackson  (skip), Carolyn Coulson (3rd), Melissa Morrow (2nd) and Jodi Murphy (lead) and ran down a list of their accomplishments, including being the first ever team at any Curling Canada championship to score an eight-ender, Bill introduced Curl PEI President Angela Hodgson, who presented each of the team members with a bouquet of flowers. Next up with greetings was Cornwall Club President Paula Ling, who congratulated the curlers, and invited everyone to stay around for cake following the event.

Bill then handed the mic over to the Jackson rink. All four members spoke, thanking the Club, along with their significant others and their children for their support during the event. Three of the members had learned to curl at the Cornwall club, including Carolyn, who took up the sport later in life, and found it a great way to meet people in her new community. They talked about what a great event the Travelers is, saying that besides winning the title, they had a great time too.

The team also took the time to point out some of the “goodies” they received at the event, including unique curling-related paintings from curling artist Dean Joanisse, gold medals, and photos of all the teams.

Following the celebration, the Canadian Champs stayed around to talk with family and friends, and for a few more photos.

Here’s a gallery of photos of the event. Click on a thumbnail to enlarge, and use arrows to go ahead and back.

Four young teams from the Island two from Cornwall and two from Summerside, with their sights set on competing in the 2019 Canada Games, took part in the Curl Moncton Youth Spiel and Canada Games Mini Development Camp over the weekend, with three of the four PEI rinks advancing to the three division finals, and two winning their divisions. The eligibility age for curling for the 2019 Canada Games is any athlete born Jan 1, 2001 or later.

In the finals, the Mitchell Schut rink from the Cornwall Curling Club came from behind to beat the Ethan Young team from the Halifax Mayflower Club 6-4 while the Callie Wood foursome, skipped by Olivia Barbour, edged their Silver Fox clubmates the Cruz Pineau team by a 5-4 score. The other division, which included older teams, saw the Josh Nowlan team from Moncton come out as the winners over the Erica Cluff team from Woodstock NB. Nowlan is the grand son of Lou and Marge Nowlan from Summerside.

Schut was trailing 4-2 after four ends in his six end final, but pulled off a double in the fifth end to score three and lead 5-4 coming home without hammer. Young was light on his last shot, giving the win to Schut. Other members of the Schut team are third Colin MacKenzie, second Michael MacEwen, and lead Liam Kelly, with coach Nancy Yeo.

The Barbour/Wood team got off to a flying start in her game against Fox clubmate Cruz Pineau, leading 5-1 at the third end break. Pineau came on strong in the second half, picking up singles in ends four and five to narrow the gap to 5-3 coming home. Pineau stole a single in the last end — final score Wood 5 Cruz 4. Other members of the Barbour Wood rink are Jordan Dunphy-Condon and Olivia Wood, with coach Shelley MacFadyen. Rounding out the Pineau squad, also coached by MacFadyen, are Brock Rochford, Jack MacFadyen, and Logan Rogers.

Cornwall PEI Women, Newfoundland & Labrador men crowned Travelers champions (Curling Canada)

Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador have their first ever Travelers Canadian Curling Club Championship titles. Lisa Jackson’s rink out of the Cornwall Curling Club in P.E.I defeated Ontario 5-3 in the women’s final. Andrew Symonds of St. John’s got past Manitoba 6-4 in the men’s final.

P.E.I. took control of the women’s final with a steal of one in the sixth end. Ontario came up light in the seventh end on a draw for two, putting P.E.I. in the driver’s seat coming home in the eighth.

“We just wanted to keep it open so we had a chance to win it and hopefully I had a shot,” Jackson said. “It feels amazing to be able to bring this banner back to the Island.”

National championships are not unfamiliar territory for Jackson’s team, but it was a first for all of them in curling. Lead Jodi Murphy and second Melissa Morrow have both represented the Island at national soccer championships while third Carolyn Coulson has been to a national bodybuilding championship.

“This ranks the top for all of us,” Jackson said of her team’s list of sports accomplishments.

This is the first Travelers title for P.E.I. after the province’s women’s team finished as silver medalists in Halifax at last year’s Travelers final.

TCCC-2015-PEI-women-trophy

2015 Travelers Curling Club Championship Women’s champions, Team Prince Edward Island: skip Lisa Jackson, third Carolyn Coulson, second Melissa Morrow, lead Jodi Murphy of the Cornwall Curling Club in Cornwall, P.E.I. (Curling Canada/Claudette Bockstael Photo)

History was also made in the men’s event.

For Newfoundland and Labrador, the win means everything to skip Andrew Symonds.

“Absolutely unbelievable. We played a pretty good game today as a team and Manitoba gave us a great match,” the skip said after receiving his gold medal.

Newfoundland and Labrador had the pressure on Tyler Drews and his Manitoba’s team for much of the game. Symonds scored a big three points in the third end but watched as his team’s advantage shrank in the fifth end thanks to a steal by Manitoba.

Symonds threw a big-weight double to force Manitoba into a lone point in the seventh end. Manitoba applied pressure in the eighth end, leaving Newfoundland and Labrador a quiet-weight inturn hit-and-stick for the win.

“I think it was the first time all week we had to play that kind of shot,” said Symonds. “We were a little nervous with the two (Manitoba) counters in the back.”

The St. John’s skip has curled with his third Mark Healy for the last decade. The two were joined by second Cory Ewart, who represented Newfoundland and Labrador at the 2006 Brier, four seasons ago. Keith Jewer started throwing lead stones for the Re/Max Centre team two years ago.

The week was filled with emotional moments for the men’s champions. Six days before winning his province’s first Travelers Curling Club Championship, Symonds says he was overwhelmed when he opened his hotel room door.

“Walking into the hotel to see this (jacket) with my name on it was a huge goosebumps moment. The event itself is so fantastic. When we go back home I’ll certainly be telling all the guys this is an event you want to get to,” the Newfoundland and Labrador skip said.

“This, for everyone here, was our Brier or our Scotties. It’s an incredible accomplishment just to get here, and to come here and win it is just surreal. I was pretty close to shedding some tears after that last shot.”

This is the first time Newfoundland and Labrador has brought home a championship banner from a Travelers Canadian Curling Club Championship.

In the bronze medal games it was Alberta’s Nanette DuPont rink who captured third place over Northern Ontario’s Kathie Jackson in women’s play. Team Quebec’s Stephane Lamy’s rink defeated Nova Scotia’s Mike Callaghan to win bronze in the men’s event.

This was the seventh edition of the Travelers Curling Club Championship. The teams completed a week-long round robin at the Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club offering up Canada’s top club curlers an elite national championship experience. Curling Canada’s 14 Member Association teams (from 10 provinces, three territories and Northern Ontario) battled to make the playoff rounds.

Each team is allowed only one player who has played in a provincial/territorial Juniors’, Men’s (Brier), Women’s (Scotties) or Seniors’ championship in the current or previous four curling seasons, or participated in a Grand Slam event in the current or previous four curling seasons.

As well, no player on the teams can have played in a Canadian Juniors, Men’s, Women’s or Seniors national championship in the current or previous four seasons.

Exception – Provinces/Territories with an open provincial/territory event will be permitted 1 player who has placed top 25% in a Juniors’, Men’s (Brier), Women’s (Scotties) or Seniors’ provincial/territory event in the current or previous 4 curling seasons, or participated in a Grand Slam event in the current or previous 4 curling seasons.

Cornwall club champs become Canadian Travelers champs!

Ottawa-This year’s Canadian Travelers Curling Club Champions are the Prince Edward Island women and Newfoundland and Labrador men. Congratulations to Cornwall’s 2014-2015 club champs Lisa Jackson, Carolyn Coulson, Melissa Morrow, and Jodi Murphy, who won the women’s title, and to Andrew Symonds, Mark Healy, Cory Ewart, Keith Jewer from Newfoundland and Labrador, the men’s champs!

This is the first time that Cornwall has ever won a Curling Canada national championship (we did win the Canadian Open and Women’s 2 person Stick curling titles, held here at our own club back in 2013).

The Cornwall reps beat the Ontario women’s team, skipped by Tina Mazerolle, 5-3 in this afternoon’s final, blanking the 1st end and scoring two with hammer  in the 2nd. Ontario took singles in the next two ends, but PEI pulled ahead with a deuce and a stolen single in ends 5 and 6. Ontario took one in seven, but ran out of rocks in the eighth. PEI also scored an eight ender in round robin play, the first eight-ender ever scored in a Curling Canada national championship.

Newfoundland and Labrador won the men’s title, with a 6-4 victory over the Manitoba men’s team, skipped by Tyler Drews. The Bronze medal games went to the Quebec men and Alberta women.

This is a first-time Travelers title for both Newfoundland and Labrador men and PEI women.

Travelers Finals set: A rematch for Women’s (PEI vs ON), and history for Men’s (Curling Canada)

Ottawa-For the first time in the event’s history, Newfoundland and Labrador or Manitoba will be crowned men’s champions at the Travelers Canadian Curling Club Championship. On the women’s side, it’s a rematch of last year’s final, as Ontario will seek its third title and Prince Edward Island its first.

In women’s play, Team Ontario stole a deuce in the seventh end which was enough to get past Alberta and move into Saturday morning’s women’s final. Tina Mazerolle’s Guelph rink will look to win back-to-back titles for the host province after their 7-3 win over Alberta.

Prince Edward Island gave up two points to Northern Ontario in the first end of the other women’s semifinal. However, the Cornwall, P.E.I., rink never looked back, getting steals in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh ends.

The 6-2 win for P.E.I. assures fans at the Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club that they will be treated to a rematch of last year’s women’s final.

“Our plan will be to just keep it simple in the final as we did again tonight,” P.E.I. Skip Lisa Jackson said with a smile.

Andrew Symonds’s rink out of the Re/Max Centre in St. John’s gained control of the semifinal men’s game against Quebec with a big two points in the seventh end. His draw to the four-foot put his team up 6-3.

“I felt pretty good about it. It was pretty much the same line as my first one and it felt good after my miss in the fourth,” Symonds said, referring to a draw for two points three ends earlier, which came up light.

Quebec’s Stephane Lamy’s rink from Laval played a consistent game but struggled to generate more than two points against Newfoundland and Labrador.

“We dropped our last round robin game to Saskatchewan, which maybe made us a bit more hungry tonight so our boys weren’t missing much tonight,” Symonds added.

Newfoundland and Labrador will play Manitoba, another province that will be looking for its first Travelers Canadian Curling Club Men’s Championship.

These are, in our opinion, the best brushes on the market, and, as you likely have heard by now, there are concerns that they, along with some newer models from other manufacturers,  may actually be “too good” for championship play, making it easier to control the rock and to drag it further with less effort.

hardline icePAD brushes at our Pro Shop

To address these concerns with a number of the newer brushes, including Hardline’s icePAD, Curling Canada came out with a statement today that affects the use of these brushes, and will be in place for all regional and provincial playdowns that lead to national and world championships. This would include Curl PEI provincial championship events like the Pepsi Juniors, Travelers, Seniors, Mixed, Mixed Doubles, Scotties, and Tankard, but would not include other Curl PEI championship events that don’t lead to a national championship.

To view Curling Canada’s playdowns brush-head moratorium, click here.

Under the moratorium, Hardline icePAD is approved for play at these events that lead to national and world championships, provided that the cover fabric is inverted, and the plastic insert is removed. This is an easy, less than 60 second modification, requiring no tools, and Hardline’s replacement cover installation video shows how to do it.

Also identified in the Curling Canada document as not being allowed are newer models of Balance Plus (likely the “LiteSpeed”) and Performance brushes (possibly using the textured “TX” pad). The Balance Plus “EQ” pad, which we sell, and the Goldline “Norway” pad are listed as acceptable. If you have a brush and are not sure of its suitability, contact rules@curling.ca. In most cases, replacing the brush pad with another model will make them compliant.

Unmodified Hardline icePADs can be used for regular club play and for other bonspiels and provincial championship events that don’t lead to a Curling Canada national championship.

We are big fans of the Hardline icePAD brushes, and are glad to hear that they can be continue to be used in all curling championships (with a simple modification for some events).

PEI, Alberta advance to women’s semifinals at the Travelers (Curling Canada)

For Prince Edward Island’s Lisa Jackson the plan was to make the playoffs. The bonus was achieved on Thursday evening when her team from the Cornwall Curling Club qualified directly to Friday’s semifinal thanks to a 4-3 win over Ontario.

“That’s sort of my style, defensive and not many rocks in play. When it came down to it the game was on the line with a couple of shots at the end,” Jackson said after the game.

Tina Mazerolle had a quiet tap to score a point in the sixth end but couldn’t find the inside of the PEI stone and gave up a steal of one. The Ontario skip blanked the seventh end and was attempting to keep the final end clean but a great draw and guard by the Islanders left Mazerolle with a difficult double to win. It over-curled and resulted in a steal and the win for PEI.

“We came here hoping to make the playoffs, but this is just extra now – to have one less game,” Jackson said.

P.E.I., as a different team, lost the final of the women’s event last year in Halifax.

“We feel a bit of extra pressure because of that. Some big shoes to fill for sure,” Jackson admitted.

Ontario was previously unbeaten and will now drop into a quarterfinal on Friday afternoon against British Columbia.

In other women’s play, Northern Ontario downed New Brunswick 8-5 to secure their spot in Friday playoff action. Northern Ontario will play Saskatchewan in the other quarter-final. Alberta ran British Columbia out of rocks in the eighth end to earn their direct bye into the semifinal thanks to a 5-1 record.

Nova Scotia defeated Newfoundland and Labrador 5-4 to finish with identical 2-4 records. Quebec finished their tournament at 3-3 with a win over playoff-bound Saskatchewan. Manitoba (2-4) got past Northwest Territories (0-6).

The 14 men’s and 14 women’s teams are split into two seven-team round-robin pools. After a single round-robin, the top three teams in each pool will make the playoffs. The first-place teams will be seeded directly into the semifinals, Friday, Nov. 27, at 7:30 p.m. (all times Atlantic). The second- and third-place teams will meet in crossover quarter-finals Friday at 2:30 p.m, with the winners moving into the semis.

The gold- and bronze-medal games are set for Saturday, Nov. 28, at 11 a.m.

Cornwall’s Jackson team hand Ont. their 1st loss to win their pool and advance directly to Travelers semis (Journal)

OTTAWA — The Cornwall women are advancing to the semi-finals of the Travelers Canadian Curling Club championships; the P.E.I. men’s team from the Western Community Curling Club did not make it past round-robin play.

Lisa Jackson, whose P.E.I. rink made history Wednesday by becoming the first curling team to record an eight-ender during a Canadian championship, finished pool play Thursday with a 5-1 record and first place in their pool. Their final game was a nail-biter against previously unbeaten Ontario and P.E.I. prevailed 4-3. Although the two teams finished with the same record, P.E.I. took first, and a bye to the semi-finals, based on their record against the team they tied. Jackson stole the final end for the win.

With her bye, Jackson waits the outcome of a Friday afternoon crossover game to learn who she will face in the semi-final Friday at 7:30 p.m. Atlantic.

The Island squad scored an eight-ender, very rare in national championship play, in the first end, and stole six in the second, putting the game out of reach after only two ends. March PEI Travelers champs, including Cornwall team, competing in national Curling Club Ch’ship, starting Monday in Ottawa

Curling dreams will be coming true for the 28 teams that open the 2015 Travelers Curling Club Championship on Monday at the Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club.

The seventh Travelers Curling Club Championship begins Monday at the Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club

This is the seventh edition of the Travelers Curling Club Championship. This week-long round robin takes place in a different Canadian city each year and offers Canada’s top club curlers an elite national championship experience. Curling Canada’s 14 Member Association teams (from 10 provinces, three territories and Northern Ontario) will battle to make the playoff rounds on Friday and Saturday.

PEI will be represented by the provincial Travelers champs, the Lisa Jackson women’s team, who were members of the Cornwall Curling Club, and the Freddie Fraser men’s foursome from the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton.

Each team is allowed only one player who has played in a provincial/territorial Juniors’, Men’s (Brier), Women’s (Scotties) or Seniors’ championship in the current or previous four curling seasons, or participated in a Grand Slam event in the current or previous four curling seasons.*

As well, no player on the teams can have played in a Canadian Juniors, Men’s, Women’s or Seniors national championship in the current or previous four seasons.

* Exception – Provinces/Territories with an open provincial/territory event will be permitted 1 player who has placed top 25% in a Juniors’, Men’s (Brier), Women’s (Scotties) or Seniors’ provincial/territory event in the current or previous 4 curling seasons, or participated in a Grand Slam event in the current or previous 4 curling seasons.

And while these aren’t the curlers you watch routinely on television, there are some notable names in the field that will contest the men’s and women’s championships.

On the men’s side, a name that immediately jumps out is Andrew Hackner, second for Team Northern Ontario from Geraldton. Hackner is the son of two-time Brier and world men’s champion Al Hackner. In addition to his curling credentials, Andrew Hackner played in two CIS Men’s Basketball Final 8 national championship tournaments as a member of the Lakehead University Thunderwolves.

Hackner’s skip, Mike Assad, skipped Northern Ontario to a 5-6 record at the 2001 Brier, and has played in three Canadian Mixed championships.

On the women’s side, Nova Scotia skip Monica Moriarty is the sister of Colleen Jones, and was a member of Colleen’s 1982 Scott Tournament of Hearts-winning team. Moriarty also played with Jones at the 1984 and 1989 Hearts, and was an alternate on the Jones-skipped Nova Scotia teams in 1994 and 1996. Additionally, she threw lead rocks for Paul Flemming’s 1999 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship gold-medal team.

Since the inaugural Travelers Curling Club Championship in 2009 in Toronto, Alberta has won the men’s title three times, while Saskatchewan has claimed two titles and Ontario one.

On the women’s side, Ontario has won three times, followed by Manitoba with two and Alberta with one.

At the 2014 Travelers Curling Club Championship in Halifax, Saskatchewan’s Kory Kohuch won the men’s title, while Ontario’s Kerry Lackie won the women’s crown.

The 14 men’s and 14 women’s teams will be split into two seven-team round-robin pools.

The gold- and bronze-medal games are Saturday, Nov. 28, at 11 a.m.

The Ice Queens funspiel wrapup

The Ice Queens hit the rings for a weekend of FUN!!! The Ladies Bonspiel was held November 13th and 14th with 10 full teams participating.

icequeensiceGuest curlers came from the Charlottetown, Crapaud and Summerside’s Silver Fox curling clubs.

Matos Winery donated a beautiful basket filled with wine, chocolates, and other goodies. Tickets were sold on the basket with Bernie Field being the lucky winner. Bernie won this great prize by participating in a card game of “Chase The Queen Of Diamonds”, not Chase the Ace!!

Many lucky ladies went home with door prizes but 1st Prize in the bonspiel was awarded to the team with the highest points. That team was Gloria Clarke, Elaine Hughes, Etta Reid and Carolyn Crockett.

The FUNspiel showed its true colors by awarding the 2nd Prize to the team with the lowest points. Nola Murphy, Melissa Creighton, Janette Frazer and Clare Mullen were recipients of this prize!!! This was a great twist to the normal flow of presenting prizes and was graciously accepted by all present.

icequeensinsideThis, which included lots of great food and good times could not have taken place without the help and generosity of many. A big thanks goes out to those who provided food and prizes. A special thank you to the home club ladies who prepared the tasty dishes for our Saturday evening meal.

Events at our club could not be held without the continued support of Bev our Club Manager, Lance the Iceman, Ray our custodian, and our bartenders who for this event were Kelly and Al.

A job well done by all!!!!!

Report written by event organizer Carlene Peters, with photos from event organizer Lisa MacEachern, who both did a fantastic job running the event!

Bob MacWilliams is heading to the mainland!

As I’m sure many of you know by now, one of Cornwall’s long-time members, Bob MacWilliams, has sold his house in Long Creek, and is moving to Sackville New Brunswick. Bob will be greatly missed by our club for his many roles: a “super-spare” who could play any position, “Mr. Fix It”, who kept our electronic gadgets working, a great volunteer, one of our great ice-makers, and the butt of many Boomer Gallant curling jokes on Compass. He’s also a pretty good curler, in recent years skipping provincial championship teams in the Masters and Senior Mixed events, and winning medals at the 55+ games.

Here we see Bob (right) handing Monday night pebbling duties over to Danny Kneabone. We sure hope tonight’s “trainee” ice pebble was ok!

macwilliamskneaboneGood luck to Bob in his new endeavors, and drop in for a game whenever you’re in town!
