Mixed Doubles: Upcoming spiel, Prov. Ch’ship Deadline, Rule Changes

Mixed Doubles, curling’s new and exciting format, is taking off around the world. Besides  provincial and Canadian championships, the World Curling Federation (WCF) has developed a Mixed Doubles World Championship, and Mixed Doubles has been officially added as a sport to the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea.

The Cornwall Curling Club, home of Mixed Doubles provincial champion Katie Fullerton, will once again be holding a Mixed Doubles bonspiel, on Saturday, November 21. The signup sheet will be up soon. Last year we had a full draw of 16 teams, with the following winners:

Winners of Pool A – Angus Kennedy and Myrna Sanderson
Winners of Pool B – Barry Craswell and Myrna Craswell
Winners of Pool C – Brent Irving and Angela Sanderson
Winners of Pool D – Bob MacWilliams and Carlene Peters

Meanwhile, Curl PEI’s Provincial Mixed Doubles Curling Championship will be held at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside, December 11-13, 2015. Last year’s provincial winners were the Kyle Holland/Katie Fullerton duo, from the Charlottetown Curling Complex and the Cornwall Curling Club, respectively. The winning team will move on to represent PEI at the National Mixed Doubles Curling Championship, March 31-April 3, 2016 in Saskatoon Sask. The World Curling Federation (WCF) has developed a Mixed Doubles World Championship, and Mixed Doubles has been officially added as a sport to the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea.

Entry deadline for the provincial championship is November 20, 2015, and entry fee is $80 per team. Entries must be made online at PEICurling.com

Entries to-date may be viewed at the event website at peicurling.com/mixeddoubles.

Rule revisions

In September 2015 the WCF passed new rules for Doubles play.  Curling Canada plans to adopt these rules at a meeting scheduled for Nov. 16. Here are the new WCF rules, with additions and revisions indicated.

Rules of Doubles Play
1. A team is composed of two players (in Mixed Doubles they are of opposite sex).
2. The scoring shall be the same as in a regular game of curling.
3. The “positioned” stones that are placed before the beginning of each end are
eligible to be counted in the scoring.
4. Each game will be scheduled for eight (8) ends.
5. Each team shall deliver five (5) stones per end. The player delivering the
team’s first stone of the end must also deliver the team’s last stone of that
end. The other team member shall deliver the team’s second, third and
fourth stones for that end.
6. The player delivering the first stone can change from end to end.
7. Modified FGZ – No stone in play, including the “positioned” stones and
those in the house, can be moved to an out-of-play position prior to the delivery
of the fourth stone of an end (the fourth delivered stone is the first stone
that can remove any stone from play). If there is a violation, the delivered
stone shall be removed from play, and any displaced stone(s) shall be replaced
to their original position by the non-offending team.
8 (NEW). While the team is in the process of delivery, the non-delivering player must
be positioned inside the hogline, with at least one foot on the ice surface at
the playing end of the team’s sheet, OR, in a position on the team’s sheet to sweep
the delivered stone. After delivery, either or both players may sweep their delivered
stone and any stones set in motion that belong to their team anywhere in front
of the teeline at the playing end. This applies during all of the team’s delivered
stones, including the Last Stone Draws.
9. If a player delivers a stone out of proper rotation, that stone is returned to the hack
to be delivered by the correct player, after any displaced stones have been replaced
to their original positions by the non-offending team. Should the infraction
not be discovered until after the delivery of a subsequent stone, play continues as
if the infraction had not occurred.
10. Based on the ice conditions, when no event official is available to make the decision,
the teams shall determine the specific placement of the Position A Stone prior
to the start of the pre-game practice (if applicable), and that same placement must
be used for the entire game.
11 (REVISED). Position of stationary stones – Prior to the start of every end, the team with the
choice (or hammer) shall place their team’s stationary stone, and their opponent’s
stationary stone, in either position “A” or “B”:
-The Position “A” stone is placed bisecting the centre line, midway between
the hog line and the front of the house.
– The Position “B” stone is placed so it bisects the centre line and the back
edge of the stone is in alignment with the back edge of the four foot.
If they choose to place their stone ‘out front’, they shall deliver first stones in the
end. Therefore, should they choose to be behind the button, they shall have last
stone in the end. The team not scoring in the previous end, shall have the ‘choice’
in the next end. If the end is blanked, the choice shall change to the team that delivered
first in the blanked end.
12 (NEW). Power Play – Once per game, each team with last stone, has the option to place
the stones in a “power play” position. The in-house stone (A) of the team with last
stone in that end is placed with the back edge of the stone on the teeline, splitting
the 8 foot and the 12 foot rings. The guard is re-positioned from the centre-line to
a direct line between the middle of the in-house stone and the middle of the hack.
The in-house stone will be directly behind the guard. The guard position will be at
the same distance from the rings as the normal position of the centre guard for that
game. The team calling the power play can decide which side of the house they
would like the stone to placed. A power play cannot be called in extra ends.

Cornwall’s Chloé McCloskey competing in Canadian Mixed Ch’ship, starting Sunday in Toronto

(Curling Canada)

The Canadian Mixed Curling Championship gets underway on Sunday at the Weston Golf and Country Club in Toronto.

It’s the 53rd edition of the Mixed, which began in Toronto in 1964 and has been won a leading 10 times by both Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Once again this year, the championship will feature 14 teams (10 provinces plus Northern Ontario, Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Yukon) seeded and separated into two pools of seven teams each (based on their won-lost record at last year’s Mixed in North Bay, Ont.), who will first play a round robin within their pool.

PEI-team-photoCanadianMixedTeam PEI (L-R): Eddie MacKenzie , Chloé McCloskey, Tyler MacKenzie, Megan Wile.

PEI will be represented by the Eddie MacKenzie rink, which includes Cornwall member Chloé McCloskey at third, second Tyler MacKenzie, and lead Megan Wile.

At the conclusion of the round robin, the top four teams in each pool advance to the Championship Pool, when the teams play the teams from the opposite pool, carrying forward their full won-lost records.

Meanwhile, the bottom three teams in each pool will go to the Seeding Pool, where they will compete against the three teams from the opposite pool. These teams also carry forward their full won-loss records.

At the conclusion of the Championship Pool round on Friday, two semifinals will take place Saturday morning at 11 a.m. AT, pitting 1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3. The two winners then advance to the final Saturday afternoon at 5 p.m. Atlantic, while the two losing teams meet in the bronze medal game at the same time.

Final results will determine seeding for next year’s Canadian Mixed in Yarmouth, N.S.

The Host banner for the 2016 Canadian Mixed.

All games throughout the competition are eight ends. Also, no tiebreaker games will be played at the conclusion of either round. Instead, any unsolvable ties for position after head-to-head results will be determined by accumulated Draw Shot results.

The winning team will then represent Canada at the 2016 World Mixed Curling Championship, Oct. 15-22 in Kazan, Russia. Last year’s winning team, skipped by Saskatchewan’s Max Kirkpatrick, lost in the quarter-finals of the inaugural World Mixed Curling Championship this past September in Berne, Switzerland.

Every province, plus Northern Ontario, has won at least one Canadian Mixed Curling Championship since 1964. Ontario has three Mixed titles to its credit, the latest by Orillia’s Cory Heggestad, who won the 2013 edition when staged in Mount Royal, Que. Ottawa’s Mike McLean will wear the host province’s colours this year.

The last time the event was held in Toronto was in 1985 at the Bayview Country Club, with British Columbia’s Steve Skillings prevailing.

Among this year’s competitors are a number of players with Tim Hortons Brier or Scotties Tournament of Hearts experience, including skips Dean Joanisse of British Columbia, New Brunswick’s Charlie Sullivan, Northern Ontario’s Colin Koivula, Steve Moss of the Northwest Territories, Prince Edward Island’s Eddie MacKenzie, Quebec’s Maxime Elmaleh (a former Brier champ playing lead for Jean-Michel Ménard in 2006), Saskatchewan’s Bruce Korte and Yukon’s Bob Smallwood.

Sullivan also won the 1987 Canadian Juniors and 1988 World Juniors while Joanisse skipped his province to victory at the 1989 Canadian Juniors.

Over the years, the Mixed has been won by such well-known curlers as Jeff Stoughton, Rick Folk, Rick Lang, Kevin Koe, Mark Nichols, Colleen Jones, Barry Fry, Paul Flemming, Jean-Michel Ménard, Charlottetownès Robert Campbell, and Shannon Kleibrink, who is the only female to win the Mixed as skip, which she did in 2004 at Schumacher, Ont.

Saskatchewan’s Larry McGrath is the only three-time winning skip, having won the Mixed in 1967, 1968 and 1971.

First Drop-In night of the season a success!

Thanks to the 20 people, including members, former members, and new curlers, who came out Friday evening for our first Drop-In curling session of the season. Quite a few were in costume, and it looked like everyone had a good time! A special thanks to Board members Carlene Peters, (wearing black and white stripes tonight) and Lisa MacEachern, and to Bob Fowler, who helped do the draw. President Paula Ling and vice-president Alan Mason were there, too.

Our next Drop-In night is scheduled for Nov. 27. Mark the date on your calendar, and stay tuned for details!

Here’s a few photos of tonight’s curling action, and of our bartender for the evening, Yoko Ono!

Spend a Loonie and you could win a (very) cool $50 bill!

If you’ve been on the ice this season, you’ve undoubtedly noticed the four $50 bills frozen into the ice, one behind each home end hack (we’ve had to hide our ice picks, due to the conversations we’ve overheard about removing them!).

50hackAs many of you have figured out, we’re giving them away as prizes at the end of the season, after the ice melts. Draw date will be April 2, during our Closing Spiel. This giveaway is open to everyone, members and non-members alike. To enter, you just have to print your name and phone number on a round sticky label, which you can find at the bar near the glass jar with the big fifty dollar bills on it, attach the label to a Loonie, and drop the labelled Loonie into the jar.

looniejarIf we draw your Loonie out, you’ll win a nifty fifty.  We won’t be putting the Loonie back into the jar for the subsequent draws, so you’ll have to have at least four “Canuck bucks” there (and be VERY lucky!) in order to win all the fifties. Enter often to increase your chances of winning one or more $50 bills!

Thanks to Jim Orr for suggesting this contest, which he saw at another club, and was very successful for them.

Looking for 3 or 4 more curlers for Sat. morning U16 league

We’ve got seven teams and 1 extra player for our Saturday morning Under 16 developmental team league, which begins this Saturday, Oct. 31, at 9:30am. We can put the player on a spares list, but seven teams means we have a bye, which we would like to eliminate, so we would like either three more single entries or an entire team (or 3/4 of a team!).  This league is open to players from all PEI clubs.

Details:

For curlers with some curling experience/instruction, age 11-15 years.

Entry fee is $35 +HST per player for seven weeks (A $15 Curl PEI fee will also be collected if not previously paid).

Visually Impaired/Blind, and Wheelchair Curling start Nov. 5 here in Cornwall

ParaSport and Recreation PEI will be running Visually Impaired/Blind, and Wheelchair curling here at the Cornwall Curling Club, on Thursday evenings from 8-10 pm, starting Nov. 5.

To register, or for more info, please contact the ParaSport and Recreation PEI office (902-368-4540 or info@parasportpei.ca). Registration Fee is  $50.00 for the season, which runs through March.

Wheelchair Curling

Wheelchair curling is an adaptation of curling for athletes with a disability that affects their lower limbs or gait. Wheelchair curling is governed by the World Curling Federation, and is one of the sports in the Winter Paralympic Games.

Wheelchair curling is played with the same rocks and on the same ice as regular curling, though the rocks are thrown from a wheelchair and there is no sweeping. Rocks may be thrown by hand by leaning over the side of the wheelchair, or pushed with a delivery stick. A delivery stick is a pole with a bracket that fits over the rock handle, allowing the rock to be pushed.  In Wheelchair curling, each team must be comprised of male and female players.

Curling for the Visually Impaired/Blind is essentially the same as regular curling. The difference is that each team has a sighted guide to assist the players in their rock delivery. The guide first describes the location of the rocks in the house and the type of shot that the skip has requested.  The guide then assists each player in delivering the rock. Depending on the degree of visual impairment of the player, the guide may hold the broom at a short distance in front of the player, set a flashlight on the line of delivery or communicate with the player to ensure that they are lined up correctly in the hack.

At the end of the round, three teams will move down from the A to the B pool, and two will move up from B to A.

Club founder Gordie Hermann passes away

We are sad to learn that Gordie Hermann passed away around 1 this morning. Without Gordie, there likely would have been no Cornwall Curling Club.  Let’s wind the clock back to 1979, where the Cornwall Village Council became interested in developing community recreation facilities. Gordie Hermann was the council member in charge of special community projects at that time. A survey was conducted with a skating rink, a swimming pool and a curling rink being the most popular items selected as being needed. Discussions were held with the Provincial Government, it was felt there were lots of skating rinks and that the capital and operating expenses of a pool would not make it a viable operation. After the decision was made, Gordie sat on the committee that met weekly to plan and implement the project, and then moved on to sit on the charter Board of Directors for the Club. All Directors made a personal guarantee of $1000.

Gordie was Club president during our 1983-84 and 1988-89 seasons, and spoke at our 20th anniversary celebrations in the 2001-2002 season.

Gordie Hermann at the 20th Anniversary Banquet

Gordie had heart surgery in June 2012, but recovered, and continued to curl at the Club until very recently, winning a medal in 65+ Mixed Curling at the 55+ games in February 2013. It’s a little-known fact that Gordie has also curled at the Brier, when he curled at the Crapaud Curling Club on the Ted MacFadyen rink, back in 1980.

We’ll let you know about funeral arrangements, once they are made available.

Thanks to everyone who came out for Qualifier Night for our Wednesday Night Ladder League. Wednesday Evening Ladder League Qualifier Night Draw set

We’ve got 13 teams signed up for our Wednesday evening Ladder League. Our opening night this week is “Qualifier Night”, where we schedule teams at random to play other teams in order to determine which pool to put them in for Round One. We have an odd number of teams, so, to avoid having one team play twice on Wednesday evening, we have decided to give a bye to the A pool to the team that was in the League last year, and had the most A pool finishes. The Paul Durant rink won two out of the three rounds, but they are not back, so that honour goes to the Mark MacDonald squad, who won the first round last year.

We will normally use three sheets of ice each draw time, with the A and B pools alternating timeslots each week. For qualifier night, though, we will go with four sheets at 6:30, and 2 at 8:30.

Here are the Round One Qualifier Night matchups for Wednesday Oct. 21, as selected at random (using Random.org). The Round One draw is sponsored by Lowther’s Snow Removal.

6:30 pm draw

Ice 1: Kelly Watts vs Gord Peters
Ice 2: Bob Fowler vs   Ray Biagé
Ice 3: Jeff Taylor vs Valerie Acorn
Ice 4: Robert Thibodeau vs  Lew Black

8:30 pm draw

Ice 2: Paul Neima vs Dave Younker
Ice 3: Donald DeWolfe vs Greg Groves

Bye: Mark MacDonald

The winning teams, plus the Mark MacDonald rink, will go to the A pool for Round One, which starts next week, while the runners-up will go to the B pool. The A pool had the early draw the last week of last year, so the B pool will start off with the early draw next week. One team in the A pool will have a bye in the first round. The three teams from the A pool with the lowest points will drop to the B pool after round one, while the top two teams from the B pool will move up, moving the extra team (and the bye) to the B pool for the second round. The A pool will then have the bye in the final round, with three teams moving from B to A, and two from A to B.

Each round will be 7 weeks (each team in the 7 team pool will play all six other teams plus have a bye, while the six teams in the other pool will each play the five other teams, plus play two of the teams a second time). There is one week left over at season end. We’ll  find a use for it later e.g. fill in for a last draw storm day (normally, missed weeks aren’t played)

There are prizes for the winners of both the A and B pools each round.

Team Rosters (please let me know of any roster changes):

Lew Black, Hans Wicki, Hans Anderegg, TBA
Paul Neima, Joe Callaghan, Alan Mason, Jeff Hannah
Bob Fowler, Carl Currie, Thane Thompson, Danny Young
Jeff Taylor, Dylan Sanderson, Cody Dawson, TBA
Kelly Watts, Cathy Handren, Paula Ling, Pam Sweetapple
Greg Groves, Donald Weeks, Marjorie Matthews, TBA
Valerie Acorn, Alan Acorn, Mark Perry, Len Gotell
Gord Peters, Hank Kamphuis, Gerald Dykerman, Pat MacInnis
Robert Thibodeau, Angus Kennedy, Wade Deaken, Ken Monaghan
Ray Biagé, Derek Gallant, Rebecca Rolfe, Derek MacEwen
Dave Younker, Bob MacWilliams, Joe MacMillan, TBA
Donald DeWolfe, Avery Wells, Cameron Jenkins, Nick Johnston
Mark MacDonald, Brad Gardiner, Wayne Dalziel, Wayne Goodwin

Weeks per round (unless number of teams changes)

Round 1: Oct 28,
Nov. 4, 11, 18, 25
Dec. 2, 9

Round 2: Dec. 16, 23
Jan. 6, 13, 20, 27
Feb. 3

Round 3: Feb. 10, 17, 24
Mar. 2, 9, 16, 23

Extra week: Mar 30

Rules (credit: some come from the Ottawa Curling Club’s Ladder League)

  • Open semi-competitive league. Any player can play any position, and you can change from game to game.
  • 3 game points for a win, 1 game point for a loss, 0 game points for a loss by default. Mark this and your team’s points scored (“score points”) on the scoresheet. In the case of a default, award one score point per end to the winning team. In the case of a tie, award an additional score point for the draw to the button winner. If your score is not marked and you win, you will get one score point more than the losing team. If you lose, you will receive zero score points.
  • In the event of a default, the non-defaulting team will receive one score point for each scheduled end.
  • To break ties at the end of the round between teams with the same record, the tied teams are ranked by applying the following rules in order until one tie is broken. If a one or more ties remain, the rules are applied to each tie starting from rule 1. The process continues until all ties are broken and all teams are ranked.
    1. The teams are ranked using their head-to-head record against the other teams in the tie.
    2. The teams are ranked using the point differential for their games in the round against the other teams in the tie.
    3. The teams are ranked using the point differential for all the games in the round against all teams.
    4. The teams are ranked using their initial ranking in the round.
  • Ties: Decided by skip’s rocks with sweeping (by your team only).
  • Avoiding defaults/using spares: At least one regular team member (and three players in total) must be present for the game to count, or else a default is posted.  Spares should not play a higher position than the player replaced.
  • Storms: Any games cancelled due to storms, etc. will NOT be played, unless advised otherwise. All subsequent weeks will remain where they were.  Any changes to this will be posted on CornwallCurling.com.
  • Teams may reschedule games to a different date and /or time by mutual consent. but ice time is normally hard to find.
  • The buzzer will be used to ensure the teams are off the ice within the 2-hour time period.  If the buzzer sounds, teams will complete the current end in play to finish  the game. If tied, the standard draw to the button will then take place.

If you have ever wanted to learn how to dance with a partner to rock’n’roll music, then now is your chance. For 6 weeks we will instruct you starting with the very first basic dance move in The Jive. We are volunteering to teach this dance to help raise funds to enable a team of 7 women from First Baptist Church to complete a mission trip to Cuba in the spring of 2016. The cost for the 6 weeks of dance instruction is $60 per couple.

jive
So….if you come out and try it the first night and decide it’s not for you then you can pay $10, you will have had a fun evening, and no hard feelings. If you decide that you want to continue, then you would pay $60, go home tired from dancing and laughing, and return next week knowing that every night you will get better and better.

We have taught people of all ages this dance at the Bluefield Community School over the past number of years and it still is one of the top classes for enrollment.

Last Learn to Curl session is this evening!

The third and final evening of our no-obligation, Free Adult Curling School goes tonight from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. Registration for new members (or returning members who haven’t yet signed up), and an Open House, for those who just want to have a look around, happen at the same time. Everyone welcome – the bar and Pro Shop (check out our sale on icePad brushes) are open, too!

League curling starts on Monday. We also have daytime curling 10 to noon Monday through Friday. $10 drop-in fee for non-members.

First of 3 Learn to Curl, Open House, New Member Registration sessions held

The first curlers of the season took to the ice Wednesday evening at our Free Adult Curling School. There was a pretty good turnout, even with the warm weather and the Blue Jays game, and a number of the attendees signed on as members. Welcome! Thanks to everyone who attended, and those who helped out on and off the ice.  By the way, the instructors commented that the newly refurbished rocks had great curl.

If you missed the first night, don’t worry, we’re doing it again tonight (Thursday) and tomorrow (Friday) from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. If you attended Wednesday, you are invited to come back – we have continuing classes each night. If you are new, we have starter classes each night too! It’s FREE, and you are under no obligation to join the Club. The evening curling school is designed for adults only, as younger curlers receive training as part of their regular instructional program. Please bring clean sneakers and wear loose fitting or stretchy pants and a light jacket.

Registration for new members (or returning members who haven’t yet signed up), and an Open House, for those who just want to have a look around, happen at the same time. Everyone welcome – the bar and Pro Shop (check out our sale on icePad brushes) are open, too!

We also have daytime curling on from 10 to noon Thursday and Friday. $10 drop-in fee for non-members.

Right now, it looks like we need 1 more team for Monday night Commercial League, one more team for Tuesday competitive and at least 1 more for Wednesday semi-competitive ladder league. Get your team together, and signup as soon as possible! League play starts Monday!

The Canadian Masters Curling Committee expects that all provinces and territories will be in attendance, with the exception of Nunavut.

The men’s and women’s winners and runners-up from the PEI Masters championships will earn the right to compete in the Maritime Masters Championships. The winning teams, or the highest-finishing men’s and women’s rinks that choose to attend, are also invited to participate in the Canadian Masters.

The PEI Masters champs will be determined January 22-26 at the Crapaud Curling Club. Defending provincial champs are the Mel Bernard rink from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside, and the Shirley Berry foursome from the Cornwall and Charlottetown clubs.

Happy Milestone Birthday to Carlene Peters!

We’ve just been informed (and did some fact-checking to confirm it), that today is Board Member Carlene Peters’ birthday. We won’t say how old she is, but she must be happy to know that she now qualifies for ALL the discounts!

Thinking about joining our Club? Check out our Open House and Registration Wed-Fri at 6:30 pm

The ice will be ready tomorrow, and the Cornwall Curling Club will be starting regular league play on Monday. If you’re looking for more info about curling at our Club, drop by anytime this week, especially during our Open House, Wednesday through Friday from 6:30 to 8:30 pm, and have a look around.

If you are comparing curling clubs, remember that we  have the largest membership of any PEI curling facility. Our rocks were reconditioned over the summer, we have Jet Ice, and heaters in the ice house. We are also wheel-chair accessible down to the ice surface, and our clubhouse area was completely replaced in 2011-2012. We emphasize the social and recreational aspects of curling, but have provincial champions, too!

Our economical one-draw memberships let you curl in any provincial championship (extra cost), and practice during our regular practiee times (pre-booking needed) at no extra charge (some clubs charge extra for this). You can pay half your adult membership upon signup, and the other half on Dec. 1. Youth memberships are due at registration. Memberships may be paid with Debit, Visa, Mastercard, cheque, or cash.. Check out the Club Info section of our website for our low rates.

If you are new to the sport, check out our free Adult curling lessons, at the same time as registration. Juniors receive training as part of their regular program. Curling is great exercise, and a very social sport too!

If you have any questions, send us an email (info@cornwallcurling.com) or a Facebook message, or give us a call at (902) 566-4427.

Circles painted, thanks to our dedicated ice crew!

The circles have been cut and painted, and Cornwall Curling Club’s ice will be ready in lots of time for our 6:30 pm Wednesday curling instruction (postponed from Tuesday due to a faulty ice plant part), thanks to the dedicated ice crew of Lance Lowther, Al MacCormac, Jeff Taylor & Roy Coffin, who worked until 2 this morning, as well as Montague’s Larry Richards, who cut the circles and, along with his wife Barbie, stayed to help with the painting, and Phyllis Lowther, who did the necessary coffee runs. Left to do: install the back lines, T-lines, advertising decals, etc., flood the ice a bunch of times, scrape, pebble, add the hacks, and try out the newly reconditioned rocks.
