In stick curling there are two curlers per team, who deliver their rocks with delivery sticks, with each team member delivering from opposite ends. Sweeping is allowed only from the hog line to the back of the house at the playing end. Two curlers, one from each team, alternately deliver 6 stones each per end, while their teammate skips that end. The roles are then reversed, and the partners deliver the stones back. No stone may be removed from play until the fourth stone of each end. Games are six ends and take about an hour to play. For more information on stick curling, including complete rules of play, visit www.stickcurling.ca.

Breaking news: We’ve now got more members than any other PEI curling facility!

The enrollment numbers are in for this season at Curl PEI, and, for the first time ever, the Cornwall Curling Club tops all PEI curling facilities (including some that have more ice sheets than we do) in total number of members. We were the only dedicated curling facility to increase our membership numbers over last season, and we reported a total of 276 members as of  Dec. 1. We now have 294 members, plus Monday night commercial league.  If  you count them as 24 members, we have a grand total of 318, not including non-members (particularly in the daytime) who are paying a drop-in fee.

Sounds like we’re doing something right!

Cornwall teams out of Canada Games Trials contention

Canada Games

The Alex MacFadyen rink from the Silver Fox Curling & Yacht Club in Summerside are the first men’s team to qualify for the four (two men’s and two women’s) Canada Games Training Team spots, after going through  round robin play with a perfect 5-0 record at the Curl PEI Canada Games Trials being played at the Charlottetown Curling Complex. Other members of the MacFadyen rink are James Dalton, Matthew MacDonald, and Parker MacFadyen, with coach Dave MacFadyen. The second men’s spot will be determined in the 9 am Sunday draw, with 2011 Canada Games competitor Tyler Smith and his Montague team taking on the Leslie Noye rink from Alberton’s Western Community Curling Club in a tiebreaker. Both teams finished round robin play with identical 3-2 records. Noye beat Smith 8-6 in their round robin encounter this evening. The tiebreaker is required because Curl PEI rules state that teams tied for a playoff position shall only be eliminated from the playoffs by playing a tie-breaker game.

MacFadyen beat Cameron Jenkins of Cornwall 11-8, and Devin Schut, also from Cornwall, 12-4 in action today. Smith beat Schut 8-2 in his other game today. Jenkins and another Cornwall team, skipped by Donald DeWolfe, finished play at 2-3, while Schut went 0-5.

On the women’s side, there is one double round robin draw remaining, at 9 am Sunday, but the two Training Teams have already been determined, with Kaleigh MacKay and her Montague/Crapaud team, and Lauren Moerike and her Charlottetown Curling Complex rink currently sitting at 4-1. Meghan Ching of Cornwall is sitting in third place, at 2-3, but cannot tie either of them. The final round robin draw sees Moerike face MacKay, and Ching take on Karlie Lewis of Western (0-5).

In today’s games, Moerike edged Ching 8-7 in an extra end, and beat Lewis 16-5.MacKay blanked Lewis 14-0 and beat Ching 9-6.

Other members of the MacKay team are Danielle Collings, Alyssa Wright, and Kaleigh Peters, with coach A.J. Campbell, while Ashley Gallant, Annika Kelly, Tati Kelly, and coach Kevin Moerike round out the Moerike squad.

The four Training Teams will compete in men’s and women’s best of three game series in November, with the men’s and women’s winners being named the 2015 PEI Canada Games Curling Teams (Team PEI).

The 2015 Canada Winter Games are being held in Prince George BC from February 13—March 1, 2015. The men’s curling event will take place during Week 1 (Feb. 13-21) and the women’s event will take place Week 2 (Feb. 21-Mar. 1).

Ted MacFadyen and Cornwall’s Shirley Berry rinks win PEI Masters titles

The Shirley Berry rink from the Cornwall and Silver Fox curling clubs are the 2014 PEI Masters women’s champs, beating their clubmates and defending champions the Diane MacKay team 11-3 in this afternoon’s final at the Silver Fox Curling & Yacht Club in Summerside. Berry also won the event in 2012. Her teammates this time are Sandy Hope, Arleen Harris, and Evelyn Rogerson, with coaches Butch McGee and Bill Hope.

MacKay stole the first end in the final, but Berry responded with five points in the second end. MacKay took a deuce in three, but a pair of triples in the next two ends by the Berry squad brought the game to a speedy conclusion. Other members of the runner-up MacKay team are Valerie MacLean, Lynne Thiele, and Donna Boulter.

MacKay edged the Norma Sonier team from the host club by a 6-5 score in this morning’s semi-final. Sonier led 4-0 after two ends, but MacKay took the next four ends, including a deuce in the fifth to take the lead. The Gloria Clarke rink from Cornwall were the fourth team in the event. They finished double round robin play with a 2 and 4 record and did not advance to the playoff round. Berry had a bye to the final after finishing the double round robin in first place with a 4-2 record, while Sonier and MacKay finished at 3-3.

Ted MacFadyen and his host club team took the men’s title, beating the John Holmes rink, also from the Fox, 8-5 in this afternoon’s final. Playing with MacFadyen were Lou Nowlan and Earle Proude, who were both on last year’s championship team, skipped by Mel Bernard, along with lead stone Alan Montgomery. Holmes was unable to play today, so third Des Arsenault moved up from third to the skip position, with Stephen Bent moving from second to third, Harry Williams sparing at second stone, and George Power playing lead.

In today’s final, MacFadyen, who played third for Mel Bernard when his team, which also included Nowlan and Proude, won the event in 2011 and 2012, grabbed an early five-point lead with a triple in the first and a stolen deuce in the second end. Arsenault took singles in the next two ends, the teams traded deuces in the next two ends, and singles in the two after that to give MacFadyen the win, by three points.

MacFadyen qualified first in the triple knockout round, and won the Page A vs B game over Holmes to earn a bye to this afternoon’s final.

The Holmes team doubled Brian Ellis from the Crapaud Community Curling Club 8-4 in this morning’s semi-final, recovering quickly from an Ellis triple in the opening end, with a single and a deuce in the next two ends. Another stole deuce, in the seventh gave them a 7-4 lead coming home. They also stole the final end to win by a four point margin.

Event winners Berry and MacFadyen, along with runners-up MacKay and Holmes, have earned the right to compete in the Maritime Masters Championships, March 14-17 at the Cornwall Curling Club.. The Berry and MacFadyen, or the highest-finishing men’s and women’s rinks that choose to attend, are invited to participate in the 2014 ATB Financial Canadian Masters Championships, March 31 to Apr. 6 at the Coaldale Granite Curling Club in Coaldale Alberta. CurlPEI

Day one is over at the Curl PEI Provincial Masters Curling Championships, for curlers age 60 and over, being played at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside. The six sheet club allows all eight men’s and four women’s rinks to play at the same time, so all teams have played two draws.

The Ted MacFadyen rink from the host club, which includes Lou Nowlan and Earl Proude from last year’s winning team, which was skipped by Mel Bernard, and the Brian Ellis squad from the Crapaud Community Curling Club, are both 2-0 on the triple-knockout men’s side, and have advanced to the first of four qualifying matches for the Page championship round. The “A” qualifier is set for 2 pm Tuesday. MacFadyen beat clubmate John Holmes 6-3, taking a triple in the 3rd end and stealing the final frame, and stole a triple in the 7th end in a 9-2 win over Paul Arsenault and his Cornwall Curling Club team. Ellis was trailing 6-3 after 5 in his game against Clair Sweet of O’Leary’s Maple Leaf club, who stole 4 points in the fifth end. Ellis took a deuce in six, and stole singles in the final two ends to pull out a 7-6 win. He stole a deuce in the opening en and a single in the second to grab an early lead in his afternoon match against another Fox team, skipped by Louis Walsh, and hung on for a 6-3 win. Two teams, skipped by Matt Smith of Cornwall and Bob Maynard of the Fox, have two losses, and have moved down into the C event, while the remaining teams, skipped by Arsenault, Holmes, Sweet, and Walsh, have a win and a loss.

In the four-team double round-robin women’s section, 2012 Masters champ Shirley Berry and her Cornwall team lead the pack with a 2-0 win-loss record, edging Norma Sonier and her Silver Fox team 6-5, aided by a second end triple, and getting by Cornwall clubmate Gloria Clarke 8-7 in an extra end. In that game, Berry led 7-2 after five, but Clarke tied the game with five points in the next three ends.Berry had hammer in the extra and scored a single for the win.

Defending champion Diane MacKay, also from Cornwall, lost her opener 9-4 to Clarke, who again came on strong in the latter part of the game, taking a triple in the 4th, and then stealing a deuce and two singles to build up a five point lead. MacKay scored four points in the 6th end in an 8-6 win over Sonier in the afternoon draw. Clarke is also at 1-1, while Sonier is 0-2. MacKay will face Berry, while Clarke will take on Sonier in the 10 am Tuesday draw, while Berry plays Sonier, and Clarke will take on MacKay in the afternoon.

Women’s double round robin and men’s triple knockout play continue Tuesday and Wednesday with draws and 10 am and 2 pm. The men’s Page round, featuring the four qualifiers out of the knockout goes Wednesday at 4, along with a women’s tiebreaker if needed. The second and third place teams on the women’s side after the round robin and any tiebreakers goes to the semi-final at 10 am Thursday, with the winner of the semi facing the 1st place team in the 2 pm final.

Club Dominion playdowns – replacement player policy

The Dominion

At the request of some of the teams entered into the Club  playdowns for The Dominion Curling Club Championship, the Board of Directors considered what rule would apply at Cornwall for using a replacement player.  After much deliberation, the Board voted to follow the rules implemented for the national Dominion.  If teams have someone from their regular team who is unable to play, they may bring in only one replacement, who must play in the lead position.

Good Luck to all the teams that are playing in The Dominion!

– Paul Neima,  President, Cornwall Curling Club

The Dominion Curling Club Championships – Eligibility Requirements 2014

5. Once a four person team has been declared a club champion, a maximum of 1 replacement/substitute player from the club can play lead. It is at the discretion of each curling club to determine their replacement/substitute rules throughout their process to declare their club champions.

PEI’s Smith and Holland rinks finish up seeding round play with wins at Canadian Juniors (CCA)

PEI teams finish seeding round with wins at Canadian Juniors (CCA)

(by Al Cameron)

LIVERPOOL, N.S. — One Canadian championship is all but over; now Sarah Koltun can turn her focus to another one, beginning next week in Montreal.

IMG_2437 copy

Yukon skip Sarah Koltun delivers rock to sweepers Jenna Duncan, left, and Andrea Sinclair. (Photo, CCA)

Koltun’s team from the Yukon (third Patty Wallingham, second Jenna Duncan, lead Andrea Sinclair, coach Lindsay Moldowan) completed its 2014 M&M Meat Shops Canadian Junior Men’s and Women’s Curling Championships round-robin schedule on Friday at Queens Place with a 10-5 win over Newfoundland/Labrador’s Sarah Hill (2-7, St. John’s).

The Yukon’s 5-4 record wasn’t good enough to make the playoffs, and Koltun and Co. will spend this weekend playing in a mixed doubles tournament with fellow non-playoff teams.

But Monday, another journey begins as Koltun’s team travels to Montreal to begin preparations for its first Scotties Tournament of Hearts.

“I kept having to remind myself that we’re actually going there afterwards,” said a smiling Koltun on Friday. “Now that this is kind of done, I’m realizing that we’re actually going there right away, and we’re just so excited.”

It won’t be the identical team that opens play at Maurice Richard Arena on Feb. 1 against Alberta’s Val Sweeting. Chelsea Duncan (Jenna’s sister), who played at the juniors last year but aged out, will step in at third; Wallingham moves to second, and Moldowan will be the team alternate.

The team arrived in Liverpool with high hopes, but stumbled out of the gate to open the event.

“But we played pretty well toward the end; we just had a bit of a slow start and we weren’t able to overcome that,” said Koltun, 20. “We just did the best we could and tried to learn as much as we could, and we’ll try to use that going forward into the Scotties next week.

“The break will be nice, but we’re definitely excited and we’ll be ready to be back on the ice in Montreal. We’re so excited; I can’t even describe it how exciting it is.”

In other women’s games on Friday afternoon — all in the seeding pool to determine the final rankings and set the seedings for the 2015 M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors in Corner Brook, N.L. — Northern Ontario’s Krysta Burns (4-5, Sudbury) beat Nunavut’s Sadie Pinksen (0-9, Iqaluit), and P.E.I.’s Veronica Smith (5-4, Cornwall) knocked off the Northwest Territories’ Carina McKay-Saturnino (2-7, Inuvik).

In men’s seeding play, the Yukon’s Joe Wallingham (5-4, Whitehorse) toppled Nunavut’s Jamie Airut (0-9, Rankin Inlet), and P.E.I.’s Kyle Holland (3-6, Charlottetown) stole points in the final four ends for a 9-8 win over Quebec’s Adam Freilich (3-6, Montreal/Boucherville).

The playoffs get underway on Saturday at Queens Place Emera Centre. In the women’s semifinal at 9:30 a.m. (all times Atlantic), Nova Scotia’s Mary Fay (8-2, Chester) takes on B.C.’s Kalia Van Osch (8-2, Nanaimo/Delta). The winner advances to the gold-medal game at 4 p.m. against Alberta’s Kelsey Rocque (9-1, Edmonton).

On Sunday, the men’s 9:30 a.m. semifinal features Alberta’s Carter Lautner (7-3, Calgary) and New Brunswick’s Rene Comeau (7-3, Fredericton), with the winner taking on Manitoba’s Braden Calvert (9-1, Winnipeg) at 4 p.m. for the gold medal.

Both gold-medal games will be televised by TSN/RDS2.

Round-robin games took place at both Queens Place Emera Centre and the Liverpool Curling Club in the beautiful South Shore region of Nova Scotia.

For the second consecutive year, the competition format involves all 14 Member Associations of the Canadian Curling Association (10 provinces, plus Northern Ontario, Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Yukon).

The Trials will qualify two men’s and two women’s teams as the Canada Games Training Teams. These teams will then square off in best of three series in November to select the men’s and women’s Canada Games Curling teams, to compete in the national event, from February 13—March 1, 2015 in Prince George.. The national men’s curling event will take place during Week 1 (Feb. 13-21) and the women’s will follow in Week 2 (Feb. 21-Mar. 1). Six men’s and four women’s teams have signed up for the Selection Trials. Due to the age restrictions, and the fact that the Winter Games are only held every four years, it is unusual to have a defending provincial representative at this event. However, Tyler Smith, who skipped Team PEI Men at the Games in 2011 at the age of 12, is back, looking to represent PEI again, this time with a team from the Montague Curling Club. Smith was recently featured in an interview with the Canadian Curling Association (click to read), and his team were runners-up in this season’s provincial junior men’s championship. Other men’s teams entered are the Donald DeWolfe, Cameron Jenkins, and Devin Schut foursomes from the Cornwall Curling Club, the Alex MacFadyen team from the Silver Fox Curling & Yacht Club in Summerside, and the Leslie Noye rink from the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton.

The four womens teams are the Meghan Ching rink from Cornwall, the Karlie Lewis team from Western, the Kaleigh MacKay squad from the Montague and Crapaud Community clubs, and the Lauren Moerike foursome from the host Charlottetown Curling Complex.

At the Selection Trials, the four women’s rinks will play a double round robin format, while the six men’s teams will compete in a single round robin. The top two men’s and women’s teams out of the round robins and any tiebreakers will then advance to the November event to choose PEI’s representatives at the Games.

Five sheets of ice at the Charlottetown complex means that all ten teams will be on the ice for each draw, with round robin action beginning Thursday at 7 pm, continuing Friday and Saturday at 2 and 7 pm, with the final women’s double round robin draw and men’s tiebreaker, if needed, Sunday morning at 9. If a women’s tiebreaker round is required, it will go Sunday at 2 pm, and a second men’s tiebreaker round, if  necessary would go at 7 pm.

The draw, and end by end results from the Selection Trials are available at the event website, PEICurling.com/canadagames.

Cornwall’s Smith rink picks up lopsided win in Canadian Jrs. seeding round, MB headed to men’s final (CCA)

(by Al Cameron)

LIVERPOOL, N.S. — It was only Wednesday night, but Manitoba’s Braden Calvert was already in the position every team at the M&M Meat Shops Canadian Junior Men’s and Women’s Championship wants to be in: one well-timed victory away from a national title.

Calvert’s team from Winnipeg — third Kyle Kurz, second Lucas Van Den Bosch, lead Brendan Wilson and coach Tom Clasper — clinched first place in the round-robin and a bye to Sunday’s 4 p.m. (all times Atlantic) men’s gold-medal game with a 5-4 win over Alberta’s Carter Lautner (5-3, Calgary) on a wintry night at the Liverpool Curling Club.

With the victory, Manitoba improved to 8-0 and holding the necessary tiebreaker advantages to clinch first place and the bye to the final.

“That’s a pretty neat feeling,” said Calvert, whose team defeated reigning Canadian junior men’s champ Matt Dunstone in the Manitoba final. “The boys have played so well in front of me; they just made my job so easy all week.”

Now, the issue becomes how to deal with nearly four full days of thinking about the final, with two round-robin games to play and a day off on Saturday.

“I think our team is great at staying loose and trying to have fun all the time,” said Calvert with a smile. “I think we’ll be OK that way. We brought a PS3 and NHL14, so we’ll be pretty busy at that. We’ll hopefully be able to take our minds off it a little bit.”

Dunstone, by the way, has been supporting the team from Winnipeg.

“We were sitting in our living room cheering him on last year,” said Calvert of Dunstone’s dramatic win in Fort McMurray, Alta. “It’s pretty neat to see what Matt did, and he’s just a great guy. We’ve been talking to him this week and he’s been very supportive. and we’re taking a lot from what he went through last year.”

In other men’s championship pool games, New Brunswick’s Rene Comeau (6-2, Fredericton) turned back Saskatchewan’s Tyler Hartung (5-3, Kronau); B.C.’s Cameron de Jong (4-4, Victoria) shaded Ontario’s Ryan McCrady (5-3, Ottawa) 4-3; and Nova Scotia’s Robert Mayhew (5-3, Windsor) doubled Northern Ontario’s Tanner Horgan (5-3, Sudbury) 10-5.

In women’s championship pool play, Alberta’s Kelsey Rocque, of Edmonton, suffered her first loss after seven straight wins, bowing 6-3 to home-province hopeful Mary Fay (6-2, Chester); B.C.’s Kalia Van Osch (6-2, Nanaimo/Delta) doubled Ontario’s Molly Greenwood (5-3, Kitchener-Waterloo) 4-2; and Manitoba’s Meaghan Brezden (5-3, Winnipeg) beat Saskatchewan’s Kristen Streifel (4-4, Saskatoon) 7-6.

In seeding pool play, to determine the final rankings and the seedings for the 2015 M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors in Corner Brook, N.L., P.E.I.’s Veronica Smith (4-4, Cornwall) was a 16-1 winner over Nunavut’s Sadie Pinksen (0-8, Iqaluit).

Action at the 2014 M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors continues on Thursday with draws 9:30 a.m., 2 p.m. at 6:30 p.m. (all times Atlantic).

Round-robin games are taking place at both Queens Place Emera Centre and the Liverpool Curling Club in the beautiful South Shore region of Nova Scotia.

Once the top three teams for each gender have been determined, all playoff games will be played at Queens Place Emera Centre. The women’s final is Saturday while the men’s final is Sunday Both finals will be televised live on TSN/RDS2 at 4 p.m. AST/3 p.m. EST.

New Brunswick women come on strong, Cornwall’s Smith picks up win at Canadian Juniors (CCA)

LIVERPOOL, N.S. —  The Honey Badgers are coming on strong at the 2014 M&M Meat Shops Canadian Junior Men’s and Women’s Curling Championships.Jessica Daigle’s New Brunswick women’s team from Fredericton (third Cathlia Ward, second Natalie Menzies, lead Katie Forward, coach Mark Ward) adopted the nickname of the stubborn animal — check out the video on youtube — at last year’s Canadian Juniors in Fort McMurray after rallying from a slow start to the event.

A year later, another slow start — New Brunswick lost twice on opening day — and the honey badgers are still scrapping in pursuit of a Canadian championship.

New Brunswick opened its championship pool round-robin on Wednesday  morning with an 8-3 win over Quebec’s Camille Boisvert (St-Romuald) as a blizzard raged outside Queens Place Emera Centre.

“We are definitely back in honey badger mode,” said a smiling Daigle, whose team improved to 4-3 and still alive for a playoff berth. “The name carried on, and we’re definitely back for the week. But it took a couple days. We had some bumps in the road; our first day was a little shaky. But we’ve built up from there, and going strong. Everybody is going in that upward motion, so we’re going with what we have now.”

Quebec dropped to 3-4 with the loss.

Eight women’s teams are still alive in the championship pool, while the other six are in the seeding pool to determine the final rankings and the seedings for the 2015 M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors in Corner Brook, N.L.

“We woke up this morning feeling good, and we came out today and played just like we needed to,” said Daigle. “It feels good to come out strong like that.”

In seeding pool action, P.E.I.’s Veronica Smith (3-4, Cornwall) scored two in the 10th end for a 7-6 win over the Yukon’s Sarah Koltun (3-4, Whitehorse) and Newfoundland/Labrador’s Sarah Hill (2-5, St. John’s) was a 12-5 winner over the Northwest Territories’ Carina McKay-Saturnino (2-5, Inuvik).

The men’s championship round begins play later today. In men’s seeding round play, the Yukon’s Joe Wallingham (3-4, Whitehorse) turned back Quebec’s Adam Freilich (Montreal/Boucherville) 11-4, while Newfoundland/Labrador’s Stephen Trickett (3-5, St. John’s) beat the Northwest Territories’ Matthew Miller (2-6, Inuvik) 7-4.

Action at the 2014 M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors continues on Wednesday with draws at 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

AST/3 p.m. EST.

PEI teams finish round robin play, will go to seeding round, not the ch’ship round at Cdn. Jrs. (CCA)

(by Al Cameron) LIVERPOOL, N.S. — B.C. skip Cameron de Jong didn’t actually need to win his final preliminary round game on Tuesday afternoon at the 2014 M&M Meat Shops Canadian Junior Men’s and Women’s Curling Championships to keep his title hopes alive.

But he didn’t know that when he stepped onto the ice at Queens Place Emera Centre. In fact, with the various tiebreaker scenarios available, that wasn’t determined until after his game had started.

No matter. de Jong’s team from Victoria (third Brook Calibaba, second Ryan Cassidy, lead Alex Horvath and coach Don McMullen) took care of business all on its own, beating New Brunswick’s Rene Comeau (5-1, Fredericton)  to make it to the eight-team championship round, which kicks off on Wednesday.

“So we’re good then. Whoo! I’m actually glad I didn’t know,” said de Jong, who made a clutch outturn draw to the four-foot to nail down the win. “It probably would have put more pressure on us out there. It’s easier not knowing, and having fate in your own hands.”

With the win, B.C., 3-3 in Pool B, joins Manitoba’s Braden Calvert (6-0 Pool A, Winnipeg), Saskatchewan’s Tyler Hartung (4-2 Pool A, Kronau), Ontario’s Ryan McCrady (4-2 Pool A, Ottawa), Northern Ontario’s Tanner Horgan (4-2 Pool A, Sudbury), New Brunswick, Alberta’s Carter Lautner (5-1 Pool B, Calgary) and Nova Scotia’s Robert Mayhew (4-2 Pool B, Windsor) in the championship round. The preliminary records carry over, with the Pool A teams playing the Pool B teams to determine the teams that move on to Sunday’s playoffs.

“It’s pretty much in our hands now,” said de Jong. “It’s pretty amazing. I can’t wait for tomorrow (when the championship round begins).”

In the other men’s games on Tuesday afternoon, the Yukon’s Joe Wallingham (2-4, Whitehorse) downed P.E.I.’s Kyle Holland (1-5, Charlottetown) 11-6, and Alberta beat Nova Scotia 7-4.

The Yukon, P.E.I., the Northwest Territories’ Matthew Miller (1-5, Inuvik), Quebec’s Adam Freilich (2-4, Montreal/Boucherville), Newfoundland/Labrador’s Stephen Trickett (1-5, St. John’s) and Nunavut’s Jamie Airut (0-6, Rankin Inlet) will play in the seeding pool to determine the final rankings and the seedings for the 2015 M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors in Corner Brook, N.L.

In women’s play there will be a tiebreaker today at 6:30 p.m. (all times Atlantic) between the Yukon’s Sarah Koltun (Whitehorse) and Quebec’s Camille Boisvert (St-Romuald) for the eighth and final championship round position after both teams finished with 3-3 records in Pool A. The Yukon stole one in the eighth for an 8-6 win over B.C.’s Kalia Van Osch (4-2, Nanaimo/Delta) while Quebec bowed 7-6 to Saskatchewan’s Kristen Streifel (3-3, Saskatoon).

Getting into the championship round were Alberta’s Kelsey Rocque (6-0 Pool A, Edmonton), B.C., Saskatchewan, Ontario’s Molly Greenwood (5-1 Pool B, Kitchener-Waterloo), Nova Scotia’s Mary Fay (5-1 Pool B, Chester), New Brunswick’s Jessica Daigle (3-3 Pool B, Fredericton) and Manitoba’s Meaghan Brezden (3-3 Pool B, Winnipeg).

The Yukon-Quebec loser will go to the seeding round with the Northwest Territories’ Carina McKay-Saturtino (2-4 Pool A, Inuvik), Nunavut’s Sadie Pinksen (0-6 Pool A, Iqaluit), P.E.I.’s Veronica Smith (2-4 Pool B, Cornwall), Northern Ontario’s Krysta Burns (2-4 Pool B, Sudbury) and Newfoundland/Labrador’s Sarah Hill (1-5 Pool B, St. John’s).

The women’s final is Saturday while the men’s final is Sunday Both finals will be televised live on TSN/RDS2 at 4 p.m. AST/3 p.m. EST.

NB’s Daigle edges Smith (2-3) in extra end, Holland (1-3) loses to BC in Cdn. Jrs morning draw (CCA)

(by Danny Lamoureux) The Northern Ontario women did it last night and now the Northern Ontario men did it this morning. That is winning their traditional rivalry game against Ontario at this year’s 2014 M&M Meat Shops Canadian Junior Curling Championships in Liverpool, NS.

Fifteen-year-old Tanner Horgan of the Idylwylde Golf & Country Club in Sudbury stole four points in the second end against previously unbeaten Ontario’s Ryan McCrady in Draw 7 action. From there the young skip allowed little in the way of offence for McCrady. Despite a steal of one in the ninth end to make it a two-point game, Horgan made a nice double takeout to seal the win in the 10th end.  Ontario is now 4-1 and Horgan improves to 3-1, each chasing Manitoba’s Braden Calvert, who had the morning bye, sitting at 4-0.

Nova Scotia’s favourite son this week, Robert Mayhew of Windsor, continues to roll after an opening round defeat, posting his fourth consecutive win. Mayhew edged Joe Wallingham of the Yukon 5-3, who drop to 1-3.

New Brunwick’s Rene Comeau continues to lead the pack in Men’s Pool B, scoring six points in the first end against NWT’s Matthew Miller. The game ended after eight ends 11-5 for New Brunswick. Their record is 4-0 while Miller is at 1-4.

IMG_7092

Quebec’s Adam Freilich squared off with Newfoundland & Labrador’s Stephen Trickett. In a see-saw battle, Trickett chased the entire game trying to even the score. A couple of nice deuces later in the game set him up for a game-tying two points in the last end, but Trickett rolled out and Quebec won their first match of the tournament. Both teams are now 1-3.

Saskatchewan’s Tyler Hartung evened his record at 2-2 in defeating Jamie Airut of Nunavut 13-2. Airut remains winless at 0-5.

In the final men’s game of the morning draw, B.C. switched positions at the back end, with Cameron de Jong relinquishing the skip position and moving to vice after three straight losses as skip. Brook Calibaba stepped in and guided the B.C. foursome to a 9-4 win over Kyle Holland of P.E.I. Both teams are 1-3.

All men’s teams with four wins are assured of moving to the championship round, while teams with three losses will make at least a tie-breaker game if required.

In the only two games in the women’s section this morning, Jessica Daigle and her Fredericton, N.B., rink defeated Veronica Smith 6-5 in the tournament’s first extra end. After two straight defeats to open the championship, the New Brunswick skip has now won two straight. P.E.I. drops to 2-3.

Finally, Ontario’s Molly Greenwood survived a scare, trailing 4-3 against winless Sarah Hill of Newfoundland & Labrador with two ends to go. Ontario squeaked ahead with a deuce in the ninth and then stole another pair in the 10th to win 7-4. Ontario is on top of Women’s Pool B at 4-1 while Hill is winless.

Round-robin games are taking place at both Queens Place Emera Centre and the Liverpool Curling Club in the beautiful South Shore region of Nova Scotia.

The teams have been seeded (based on last year’s results) into two seven-team pools for each gender and will first play a six-game round robin within each pool from Saturday through Tuesday. The top three teams in each pool, plus two teams with the next best won-lost records, then advance to the Championship Round for a further four-game partial round robin from Wednesday through Friday, with their earlier records carried forward.

Once the top three teams for each gender have been determined, all playoff games will be played at Queens Place Emera Centre. The women’s final is Saturday, Jan. 25, while the men’s final is Sunday, Jan. 26. Both finals will be televised live on TSN/RDS2 at 4 p.m. AST/3 p.m. EST.

For the second consecutive year, the competition format involves all 14 Member Associations of the Canadian Curling Association (10 provinces, plus Northern Ontario, Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Yukon).

B.C. is also in danger of not advancing, remaining winless in three starts.

The Manitoba women, skipped by Meaghan Brezden, stole four in the first end against Veronica Smith and her Cornwall rink, and then stole 1, 4 and 2 in the third through 5th ends to lead 11-0 at the half. The teams traded deuces in ends six and seven, and Smith picked up another deuce in eight, but it was handshake time, with a 13-4 final score.

The PEI men, captained by Kyle Holland from the Charlottetown Curling Complex, picked up a triple in the second end for a 3-1 lead, but their opposition, the Rene Comeau rink from New Brunswick, responded with five points in the third, and stole a deuce in the fourth end to lead 8-3. Holland recorded a single in five, but a triple and a single in the next two ends gave the New Brunswick team a 12-4 lead. Holland narrowed the gap with a deuce in the 8th, and stole a single in the 9th, but ran out of rocks in the 10th. Final score: 12-7.

Earlier,  Comeau, from the Capital Winter Club in Fredericton, upset local favourite Robert Mayhew and his Nova Scotia foursome in an entertaining game. Mayhew posted a four-ender in the sixth, posting a seemingly comfortable 6-3 lead playing the 7th. However, the resilient Comeau grabbed two points in the seventh, then stole a single in the eighth. In the ninth end, Comeau coolly drew in for second shot facing seven Nova Scotia counters and, when Mayhew missed his draw for two, the New Brunswick skip was one down with the hammer in the final end.  A missed double takeout attempt by Nova Scotia allowed Comeau a simple hit and stay for the 8-7 win.

The PEI men have the evening off, but the women face Ontario’s Molly Greenwood team, who scored a deuce in the last end to edge New Brunswick’s Jessica Daigle rink 12-11 in a scoreboard-filling game this morning,  at 7:30 pm.
