It was a great start on Friday for the four Island rinks at the Atlantic Under 18 Curling Championship, presented by Sylvan Learning, being played at the Charlottetown Curling Club. In the men’s section, the PEI Host team, skipped by Cornwall’s Jeffrey Taylor, are 2-0, while Team PEI, skipped by Alex Matters from Charlottetown are 1-0. In the women’s section, Amanda MacLean and Team PEI, from the Maple Leaf club in O’Leary, are 1-0, while the PEI Host team, skipped by Veronica Smith of Cornwall are 1-1.
In the opening draw, Matters edged New Brunswick’s Jordan Craft team 6-5, while Taylor beat Nova Scotia’s Jonathan Crouse rink team 8-3, and Smith scored four points in the final end to defeat Newfoundland and Labrador’s Carolyn Suley team by a 7-4 score.
In draw two, New Brunswick’s Jessica Daigle team stole a triple in the sixth end in a 6-4 win over Smith, and PEI’s Amanda MacLean rink beat Suley’s St. John’s rink 7-4. In the men’s section, the Taylor team picked up their second win, 7-2 over the Stephen Trickett team from St. John’s.
Saturday round robin draws are at 10 am and 2:30 pm, with the final round robin draw Sunday at 9 am, and the finals and consolation finals following at 1 pm.
