The Cornwall Curling Club will get a chance to showcase its new clubhouse at the Atlantic University Curling Championships, which get underway on Friday January 13, with team practices at 5, 6:15, and 7:30 pm. The double-knockout event, with five men’s and an equal number of women’s teams entered from Atlantic Canada universities, will qualify two men’s and two women’s teams for the CIS/CCA Curling Championships, March 14-18 in Welland Ontario.  Play gets underway on Saturday the 14th, with draws at 9 am and 2 and 7 pm, and wraps up on Sunday the 15th, with the A finals at 9 am and the B finals at 2 pm.

UPEI is represented by Cornwall’s own Sarah Fullerton rink, with third Michelle McQuaid, second Hillary Thompson, lead Whitney Young, and coach Angela Hodgson, along with the Brett Gallant foursome, which includes Alex MacFadyen, Sam Ramsay, and Cornwall native Connor MacPhee, with coach Kathie Gallant. There are PEI connections on the other teams, too, including Seven Mile Bay ‘s Anita Casey,  third on Sarah Rhyno’s defending champion St. Mary’s team, and Anita’s brother Adam, skipping the rink from Dalhousie. 1977 World Junior champion and PEI native Alan Mayhew is coaching the Robert Mayhew rink from Acadia, and my nephew Spencer Wicks is lead on the Colin Thomas rink from Memorial, who were last year’s national CIS/CCA men’s champs. The other entries are skipped by Lindsay Doucet of Acadia, Tara O’Brien of Memorial, Taylor Clarke of St. Fx, and Colten Steele of St. Mary’s.
