Kenmac Energy Opening Bonspiel

Jamie Ballem rink wins 2012 Kenmac Energy Opening Spiel “A” division

Another in a long series of successful Opening Bonspiels sponsored by Kenmac Energy was held last weekend, with the rink skipped by Jamie Ballem, with his sister Myrna Sanderson, along with Myrna’s daughter Angela Sanderson and Angela’s partner Brent Irving emerging as the “A” division winners. The same team, but with Angus Kennedy as skip instead of Jamie, also won in 2010.Ballem rink

Thanks to our generous sponsor – Gordon Matthews and Kenmac Energy, for their longtime sponsorship of our opening spiel. It’s guaranteed that this current warm spell will end sometime soon, so now is the time to be thinking of your winter heating needs, and locally-owned Kenmac Energy, your P.E.I. distributor for Petro-Canada products and  the only P.E.I. propane company with a P.E.I. office, can install, finance, and service your new furnace or hot water heater, and keep them full of fuel all winter long, so give them a call at 566-2295.
Thanks also to the event organizers, including Paul Neima and Krista Affleck, along with Santa Claus, who made an exclusive appearance,  the Cornwall Curling Club staff and Board of Directors, and everyone who helped out with the meals and in any other way to make this event successful!

Kenmac Exclusive! Santa draws to the button

We’ll get to the results of the Kenmac Opening Spiel eventually, but we just received, direct from the North Pole, some exclusive shots of Santa, who made his curling debut on the weekend, attempting, and almost executing, a draw to the button, so we thought we’d get them to you before Bruce Rainnie does!

Here’s Santa stretching after a long sleigh ride before he goes out on the ice.

Here he is, cleaning the reindeer “byproducts” from his boots before going on to the ice,

Looks like he’s better at delivering presents than rocks!

Considering the delivery, the results are pretty good!

Angus Kennedy repeats as Kenmac winner in draw to button finish

November 14th, 2010 – It was quite an ending to the A final Kenmac Energy Opening Bonspiel, as Angus Kennedy, down one coming home with hammer and lying one, tried to draw for the winning point, but had to settle for the tying single, forcing a draw to the button, which he put on the 4 foot. Opposing skip John DeLuca was a bit heavy, ending up in the 12 foot. Kennedy, who was also on last year’s winning team, was joined this year by Myrna Sanderson, and a couple of new curlers, Myrna’s daughter Angela Sanderson, who has recently returned to PEI from points west, and Angela’s husband Brent Irving. John DeLuca’s teammates were Debbie Rhodenhizer, Mike Lafontaine, and Cindy Nicholson.

Besides the curling, events included curling trivia,  solving “Wordles”, a curler bingo game where you had to get signatures from fellow curlers who had accomplished certain things during their curling careers (e.g. scored and eight ender, or bought new shoes recently), a little bit of Karaoke, and a game of Deal or No Deal, with Matt Hanus and Betty Howatt going on stage in search of the $100 prize (one of them did get $40).

Saturday lunch included meat on a bun with salad, while supper included spaghetti, and caesar salad.

While the champions were on the ice for the final draw, the rest of us took part in an auction, with Angus Davies serving as auctioneer. Monopoly money earned from our prowess in solving the trivia, bingo and puzzles, and from our lack of prowess for  losing our games was bid for mystery prizes, which included candles and glassware. The bidding was fast and furious, with Bob Fowler and Nucker Richards almost coming to blows over one item. The Club president was outbid for the final item, not knowing that money was being passed under the table to the opposing bidders from the event organizers.

For all the incriminating evidence, check out our slideshow (pics from Deal or No Deal will be along later).

Thanks to all the organizers, including Rob Young and Sherri Boutelier, Bob Fowler, Angus Davies, all the kitchen helpers, the ice staff, and everyone else involved.

Thanks as usual to our long-time sponsors Gordon Matthews and Kenmac Energy, your PEI distributors of Petro Canada products, including gas, heating oil, and propane. Be warned: the double-digit temperatures we enjoyed during the bonspiel will NOT continue all winter! Contact Kenmac today, and get your furnace serviced and fueled for the upcoming heating season.

Currie steals win over Berry in all-female 2008 Kenmac final
The championship game between the top two teams at the 2008 Kenmac Energy opening bonspiel was an exciting one, with the Karen Currie and Shirley Berry rinks tied going into the final end, where the Currie foursome, which includes Val Acorn, Cyndie Cunneyworth and Tracy MacDonald, had one rock in the house, well guarded by six rocks. With the final shot, Berry managed to get through the rock wall, but, after rubbing one of the guards on the way through, her stone ran out of steam and fell short of the rings, giving the victory to Currie. Other members of the runner-up rink are Arleen Harris, Danielle Girard, and Carol Sweetapple.

On ice two, the Bob Fowler rink, still reeling from a crushing defeat by the Karen Currie team on Friday night, recovered long enough to pull out a win against the Angus Kennedy foursome. Playing with Bob were Alan Acorn, Carl Currie, and Dick MacKinnon, while Myrna Sanderson, Bob MacWilliams, and Marjorie Matthews rounded out the Kennedy squad.

Meanwhile, the excitement was building on ice three in the battle for fifth place. The game was in an extra end between John DeLuca and Jack Fairhurst, when, facing a pile of Fairhurst stones,  DeLuca attempted a difficult double angle raise. After furious sweeping, the promoted rock came to rest touching the four foot, and it was impossible to determine whether or not it was shot stone. Fairhurst was unable to get another rock in, and a measure was called for. The DeLuca rock won the measure, relegating Fairhurst to 6th place. Playing with DeLuca were Ray Biagé, Rebecca Rolfe, and Derek MacEwen, with Nancy Yeo substituting for MacEwen in games two and three, and Geoff Scutt filling in for Biagé in the opener. The Fairhurst foursome included Linda and Dean Fairhurst, along with Crapaud’s Evelyn Rogerson.

The battle for seventh and eighth spot was between the rink of Rob Young, Lorianne and Angus Davies, and Sheri Boutelier, and the team of Barb Duncan-Biagé, Debby and Bill Sigsworth, and Gordon Canfield, with the Young rink coming out on top.
Photo: Lorianne Davies, Sheri Boutilier, Rob Young, Angus Davies, Gordon Matthews

Gordon Matthews from longtime event sponsor Kenmac Energy, PEI’s Petro Canada distributor, was in attendance to hand out gift certificates from Petro Canada, and from Mark’s Work Wearhouse to all the winners (which included everyone!). Thanks to Gordon and to Kenmac for their continuing (and very generous) sponsorship, and don’t let today’s temperature fool you – it will get colder VERY SOON, so be sure to give them a call for your heating needs.
Besides the curling, partipants enjoyed mussels and fresh baked baguettes, and hands of poker on Friday night, with card sharks buying donated prizes from an auction with their winnings. Saturday’s lunch included burgers and pasta salad, with the supper table including homemade lasagne and caesar salad, with Nanaimo bars and other squares for dessert.

Thanks to organizers Barb and Ray and everyone else who helped out, to Gordon and Kenmac Energy, to Lance and the ice crew, the bar staff, and everyone else involved in the event. See you next year!
