Montague’s Power and Kerwin win Thursday’s Desjardins Stick Curling Tournament!

The kinship and community of curling is really something special to be a part of!?

Stick Curling has been a growing part of the curling community over the years and is always increasing in popularity! You will find plenty of evidence as to the incredible camaraderie and great competition in curling at the popular Desjardins Stick Curling Tournament which takes place at the Cornwall Curling Club annually!

This past Thursday morning and afternoon the Desjardins group, lead by dedicated Cornwall Curling Club member Etta Reid welcomed 40 stick curlers to compete for the event title. Etta is a talented Stick Curler in her own right and along with her curling partner Elaine Hughes, are former winners of the women’s Provincial Stick Curling Championships!

Etta served our club as a former Board of Director member, and she continues to be a valued club volunteer. Always a smile and pleasant disposition, always helpful, and always a club advocate!

Etta Reid and Ernie Stavert

Despite not being able to curl this year, Etta was on the front lines ~ making sandwiches and pasta, welcoming curlers, and keeping score for the day of curling. Etta was joined by former President of the Cornwall Curling Club and Stick~ curling advocate and legend, Ernie Stavert, who helped to score keep and co-lead the event on behalf of the PEI Stick Curling Association.

There was plenty of fantastic curling and lots of delicious food (which was prepared on site in our “food safe” environment).

Elaine and Carol

Etta extended a most heartfelt thank you to Elaine Hughes and Carol Sweetapple who stepped in to help with food preparation and service. The food was delicious and the enjoyed by all! Etta also expressed her thanks to Cornwall Curling Clubs’ talented ice technician, Brent Irving, who worked hard to make sure the ice was in great condition for the event. Of course, Etta also extended a heartfelt thank you to Ernie Stavert for his help with the event, and his on-going work in the Stick Curling community in Prince Edward Island.

It was a tight race to the end to crown the Champions that’s for sure!

The overall winning team of the 2021 Desjardins Stick Curling Tour was Billy Power and Howard Kerwin out of the Montague Curling Club with 26 points!
Congratulations to Billy and Howard!
