PEI U18 Ch’ships, start this (Friday) afternoon here at Cornwall – free admission!

The 2019 Provincial Under 18 Curling Championships take place March 8-11 here at the Cornwall Curling Club, with five girl’s and three boy’s teams taking part, including defending girl’s champs the Lauren Ferguson team, and reigning boy’s champs the Mitchell Schut team, both from the host club, and recently returned from participating in the Canada Games in Red Deer AB. There is free admission for this event, and most of the teams are from our Club, so everyone is invited to come in and watch! We will be offering a 50X50 draw during each draw, and selling sandwiches and freshly-baked cookies, too.

The other two boy’s teams are the recently-crowned PEI Under 16 champions, the Brayden Snow team from the Silver Fox, and the U16 finalist team, skipped by Chase MacMillan out of Charlottetown. All five girl’s teams are from Cornwall, and include the Sydney Howatt, Clara Jack (U16 finalists), Rachel MacLean (U16 champs) and Emily Sanderson rinks, in addition to Ferguson.
Both the boy’s and girl’s sections play modified triple knockout draws, with the girl’s teams starting Friday at 2 and 6 pm, and the Schut and MacMillan boy’s teams hitting the ice at 6 pm, while the Snow team opens against the winner on Saturday at 10 am.

The winners from each of the three triple knockout sections will advance to the two-game championship round on Monday at 10 am and 2 pm. With the modified format, section winners drop down to compete in the next section. If a team wins all three sections, they will win the event without a championship round. A double section winner will have a “double life” in the championship round, winning the event if they take either game, while their opponent would have to win both.

This year’s winning teams advance to the third-annual Canadian Under-18  Boys and Girls Curling Championships, to be played April 2-7 at the Glen Allan Recreation Complex in Sherwood Park, Alta.

Live, end by end results from the provincial event will be available at PEICurling.com.

Jamie Newson team repeats as PEI Mixed champs, beating Tyler MacKenzie rink in final again this year

In a repeat of last year’s final, the Jamie Newson rink from the Silver Fox and Charlottetown curling clubs beat the Tyler MacKenzie foursome from Charlottetown, this time by a 9-2 score, on Tuesday morning to win the PEI Mixed (Fours) Curling Championship at the Montague Curling Rink and advance to the  Canadian Mixed, from November 4-9 2019 at Foyer des loisirs et de la culture in Saguenay, Quebec.

Photo (L-R): PEI Mixed Winners Jamie Newson, Melissa Morrow, Andrew MacDougall, Miranda Ellis, along with Larry Richards from the Montague Curling Rink

Newson won both the “A” and “B” sections of the modified triple knockout draw, defeating the Nick Blanchard team from Crapaud in the section finals, while MacKenzie came from behind with a last-end triple to edge Newson 8-7 in the “C” final. A MacKenzie win this morning would have forced a deciding game at 2 pm, as double-section winner Newson would have had to be beaten twice, but the game was not needed.

In the final, Newson, whose team includes third Melissa Morrow, second Andrew MacDougall, and lead stone Miranda Ellis, had a 4-2 lead at the fourth end break, and picked up a single in the sixth end before bringing the game to handshakes with a steal of four points in the seventh.

Other members of Team MacKenzie were third Aleya Quilty, second Doug MacGregor and lead Jodi Murphy. Eight teams, with members from five of PEI’s seven dedicated curling facilities, began play on Friday, with a storm on Monday delaying the final by 24 hours.

Defending champion Jamie Newson wins A and B qualifier games at PEI Mixed

Click for a photo gallery from Draw 4, with all eight teams

The defending champion Jamie Newson rink from the Silver Fox and Charlottetown curling club is on the right track for a possible repeat win at the PEI Mixed Curling Championships, which are taking place at the Montague Curling Rink, after winning three games on Saturday — the A section qualifier, the B section semi-final, and the B qualifier.

Jamie Newson

Nick Blanchard

The Newson foursome beat the Nick Blanchard team from Crapaud 5-2 and 6-2 in the qualifier games, as well as getting by the Tyler MacKenzie team from Charlottetown by an 8-6 score in the “B” semi-final, and will have a “double life” in the Monday championship round (at 10 am and, if Newson doesn’t win that game, at 2 pm), as they have earned berths in both playoff games, and will win the event if they take either, while their opponent, the winner of the “C” qualifier, which takes place at 2 pm on Sunday, would have to win both.

If Newson also wins the “C” qualifier in the modified triple knockout draw, he would take the championship, and advance directly to the Canadian Mixed, from November 4-9 2019 at Foyer des loisirs et de la culture in Saguenay, Quebec, without having to play the final round.

Newson will be playing Montague’s Larry Richards team in the semi-final at 10 am Sunday, while MacKenzie, who was an event finalist last year, will face double-section finalist Blanchard in the other. Richards advanced after back to back wins on Saturday against the other hometown teams, stealing the extra end for a 7-6 win against “Team Koke” with Shane MacDonald in the skip position, after George Koke was sidelined by an injury, on Saturday afternoon, and picking up an 8-5 evening draw win over Matthew MacDonald. Besides the Koke and MacDonald teams, the Chase MacMillan and Corey Miller rinks were also eliminated on Saturday after three losses, leaving only four teams going into Sunday play, out of the eight who entered the event.

Blanchard and defending champion Newson advance to 10 am Sat. PEI Mixed Qualifier #1

The first of three section qualifier matches in the modified triple knockout Provincial Mixed Curling Championship goes Saturday at 10 am at the Montague Curling Rink, with defending champion Jamie Newson and his Silver Fox and Charlottetown Curling Club team facing the Nick Blanchard foursome from Crapaud. Newson beat Summerside’s Corey Miller team 7-3, and the Chase MacMillan junior team from Charlottetown and Cornwall 7-1 to advance, while Blanchard edged Montague’s Team Koke 7-6 and defeated Charlottetown’s Tyler MacKenzie rink 9-2 to advance to the “A” Qualifier.

There are a couple of major lineup changes, with Team Koke skip George Koke, and Team MacMillan third Rachel MacLean out indefinitely. Garry Campbell has joined the Koke team, with Shane MacDonald moving up to skip position, while Katie MacLean is filling in on the MacMillan rink.

The “B” semi-finals go at 2 pm Saturday, with the “B” Qualifier at 6 pm.

The eight teams entered play a modified triple knockout draw, with the winners of each section advancing to a two-game championship round. Winners from each section drop down to compete in the next section. If a team wins all three draw sections, they will be declared champions, and the championship round will not be played. A team winning two sections will advance to both championship games and take the championship if they win either game, will their opponent would have to win both sections.

The winning rink will advance to the Canadian Mixed, from November 4-9 2019 at Foyer des loisirs et de la culture in Saguenay, Quebec.

Both Cornwall curling teams picked up wins in Thursday’s 1 pm Atlantic time draw against the Northwest Territories at the Canada Games in Red Deer, with the Lauren Ferguson girl’s rink blanking the NWT team by a 10-0 score, and the Mitchell Schut boy’s team picking up their first win of the event, by a 7-1 score. Schut’s game also went six ends, with the Island squad picking up a pair of deuces for a 4-0 lead after two ends. It was looking good for a PEI win against Quebec, with the teams tied 4-all after six ends, but Quebec blanked the seventh to have hammer coming home, and picked up a 5-4 win with a last-end single.

Giant lobster at Canada Games spreading Island cheer (CBC PEI)

Katherine Elsinga is wading her way through the sea of people at the Canada Games — all while dressed as a lobster, spreading Island cheer.

Elsinga’s son, Colin MacKenzie, is curling for Team P.E.I. So, she might not be the only one who has turned red since the Games began.

MacKenzie is just about to turn 18 while at the Games [his birthday is today!]

“He was just like, ‘Oh mom here we go again,’” Elsinga said.

Katherine Elsinga, dressed as a lobster, stands with Team P.E.I. curling team athletes (L-R) Mitchell Schut, Nick Johnston, her son Colin MacKenzie, Liam Kelly, and coach Lori Robinson at the Canada Games in Red Deer, Alta. (Doug Kelly/Twitter)

She said the parents and athletes representing the Island enjoy the costume.

“We all got our pictures together,” Elsinga said.

She is the Island’s own personal mascot and people have been approaching her for pictures since she put the costume on, something she said is unbelievable.

“One woman went to give me a hug and when we came untangled my headband fell off, my eyeball rolled across the floor.”

Ferguson loses in extra to go to 1-5, Schut looking for win today against 4-loss teams at the Canada Games

It was a two-loss day on Tuesday for both the Lauren Ferguson and Mitchell Schut rinks at the Canada Games in Red Deer. Ferguson scored a deuce in the eighth to force an extra end in her game against Alberta, but lost 8-6 when the westerners scored a deuce with last rock advantage. In the earlier draw, Ferguson was trailing 6-1 but tied the game with a five-point 7th end. BC took a single in the 8th for a 7-6 win. Ferguson has a 1-5 win-loss record heading into their games against NS (4-2) at 1 pm today, and Quebec (3-2) at 8 pm.

Alexis Burris (left) and Katie Shaw from Team Ferguson

Team Schut (0-6) are still looking for their first win, after an 8-4 loss to Alberta and an 8-2 loss to BC (both 4-1), and that win could come today, as they are taking on two teams with four losses.
Schut takes on their frequent rivals the Ethan Young team from Halifax (2-4) at 1 pm, along with the Quebec team (1-4) at 8 pm today (all times Atlantic).

Ferguson and Schut drop games vs. Manitoba. Watch on live stream as PEI plays Sask. at 8 pm

The Cornwall Curling Club’s representatives at the Canada Games in Red Deer Alberta are still looking for their first wins after three draws, following losses to Manitoba today. The Island rinks face Saskatchewan at 8 pm Atlantic, with both games scheduled to be available on live stream at https://canadagames.live/curling

Photo: Lexie Murray (left) and Alexis Burris from Team Ferguson

In action this afternoon, Team Ferguson kept the Manitoba rink to a first-end single, and took one of their own in the second, but Manitoba won the next four ends, with a single in the third, and steals of two, one, and two in the next three ends. PEI picked up a deuce in seven with a final score of 7-3 for Manitoba.

Team Schut got off to a great start in their game, stealing a first end single, but Manitoba responded with a triple and a stolen deuce to quickly build up a 5-1 lead. PEI took a single in the fourth, but Manitoba came back with singles in the next three ends for an 8-2 win.

Cornwall’s Rachel MacLean and Amy Spence competing in PEI Mixed (fours) Ch’ship, starting Friday in Montague

The Curl PEI Provincial Mixed (fours) Curling Championship will take place March 1-4 2019 at the Montague Curling Rink, with eight teams, representing five curling clubs, taking part. The Cornwall Curling Club will be represented by Rachel MacLean and Amy Spence, one half of the junior team skipped by Chase MacMillan, who curls out of the  Charlottetown club. MacLean went undefeated on Monday to win the PEI Under 16 Girls Championship.

Rachel MacLean

Amy Spence

Both the defending Jamie Newson team from the Silver Fox and Charlottetown curling clubs and last year’s Tyler MacKenzie finalist foursome from Charlottetown are back this year. There are three teams from the host club, skipped by George Koke, Matthew MacDonald and Larry Richards, along with the Nick Blanchard rink from Crapaud, and the Corey Miller squad from the Silver Fox.

The eight teams will play a modified triple knockout draw, with the winners of each section advancing to a two-game championship round.

Brayden Snow, and Cornwall’s Rachel MacLean teams go undefeated to win PEI Under 16 titles

The Brayden Snow rink from the host Silver Fox Curling Club, and the Rachel MacLean team from the Cornwall Curling Club both went undefeated with 5-0 win-loss records this weekend to win the provincial Under 16 Curling Championships. Snow, backed up by third Cruz Pineau, second stone Brock Rochford, and lead Anderson MacDougall, with coach Shelley MacFadyen, was trailing 5-3 after four ends of play in the Sunday afternoon boy’s final, after the Chase MacMillan team from the Charlottetown Curling Complex stole three points in the fourth end. The teams traded deuces in the next two ends, with Snow tying the game with another pair in the seventh end, and pulling out an 8-7 win with a stolen single in the final end. The Chase MacMillan finalist team, who finished with a 2-2 win-loss record, also includes third Jack MacFadyen, second Liam Barbrick, and lead Davis Nicholson, and is coached by David MacFadyen. The third team in the boy’s event, the Samuel Shaw foursome from the Montague Curling rink finished without a win, but came within two points of the winning team in one of their matches.

Cornwall’s Ella Lenentine team went 1-3, while Mallory Rochford and her host club team got off to a great start, losing their opener by a single point, but didn’t manage to pick up a win.

Jack and Carver then squared off in an exciting  Sunday morning semi-final, with Carver up 3-1 after four ends. Jack took a 5-3 lead with a deuce in five and single steals in 6 and seven, but Carver tied it up with a deuce in the eighth. Jack had hammer in the extra end, and recorded a single to punch her ticket to the championship game.

Cornwall’s Canada Games Curling Teams both 0-2 after opening day

Cornwall’s Lauren Ferguson and Mitchell Schut rinks lost their two opening draws on Sunday at the Canada Games in Red Deer Alberta.

In the 1 pm Atlantic opening draw, Ferguson was trailing 5-1 after four ends with Ontario taking a triple with hammer in the first end, and grabbing a deuce in the 4th, while PEI scored a single in the third end. The teams traded deuces in five and six, with PEI taking a single in the seventh, but it was not enough, and the game ended with the final score of 7-4.

An Ontario steal of four points in the third end gave Ontario a 6-1 lead after four ends in their game against PEI’s Mitchell Schut rink. Ontario added a single in the sixth and stole a deuce in the seventh for a 9-1 win.

In the 8 pm Atlantic draw, Team Ferguson was trailing by one point with a 5-4 score going into the 7th end, where the Newfoundland and Labrador team stole 5 points to bring the game to handshakes with a 10-4 final score.

Team Schut,  trailing 5-3 after 7, also lost a tough one to NL with a final score of 7-3 after NL stole a pair in the 8th.  Nick Woznesensky was sparing in the game, as third Nick Johnston was sitting out with an injury.

The PEI teams have two games on Monday – at 1 pm against Manitoba and at 8 pm against Saskatchewan (Atlantic times). The 8 pm games will be live streamed at  https://canadagames.live/curling

Cornwall women 1-2, men 1-3 at PEI Curling Club Ch’ships

Round robin play concludes on Sunday in both the Men’s and Women’s divisions of the PEI Curling Club Championships, being played at the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary, with teams from all seven PEI curling facilities taking part in the Men’s event, while six teams are entered in the Women’s.

The Melissa Morrow team from the Silver Fox in Summerside, who were finalists last year, are 3-0 on the Women’s side, while Tammy Dewar and her Montague team, along with the Bobbi-Jean Boylan foursome from the host club  are 2-1. Cornwall’s Kim Nicholson rink are 1-2.

Cornwall women sweep a rock into the house

The Charlottetown Curling Complex team, skipped by Dennis Watts, remains undefeated at 4-0 on the men’s side, following wins today over Western Community, and Montague. The Tim Hockin-skipped Silver Fox team and Montague Curling Rink’s Matthew MacDonald squad both have just one loss. Cornwall’s Mark MacDonald rink is 1-3.

Cornwall skip Mark MacDonald

There are 4 draws on Sunday, with all the women’s teams seeing action at 9 am, six of the seven men’s teams on the ice at noon, two women’s and one men’s rink playing at 4 pm, and six men’s teams wrapping up the round robins with the 8 pm draw.

The top three teams from the round robin draws, after any tiebreakers, advance to their respective championship round on Monday and, if needed, Tuesday.

The provincial winners will advance to the national Curling Club Championship, normally held in November. Dates and location have not yet been announced.

Cornwall’s MacLean, and Snow from the Silver Fox, advance to U16 finals

File photo: Team Snow

There is one round robin game left in the three-team Boy’s section, and the first place team, the Brayden Snow foursome from the host club, has already been determined, as they have finished the double round-robin with a perfect 4-0 win-loss record and can’t be caught by either of the other teams.

Team MacMillan puts a rock in the four-foot in action at the U16 (Photo from Twitter @CurlMacMillan)

The Chase MacMillan team from the Charlottetown Curling Complex has a 1-2 win-loss record, while the Samuel Shaw foursome from Montague sits at 0-3, so if MacMillan wins their game at 10 am, he will advance to the 2 pm final against Snow. If Shaw wins, they will both have 1-3 records, so tiebreaking rules would come into effect. They would each have won one game and lost one against the other team, so head to head records cannot be used, and cumulative last stone draw results would come into play to determine who advances to the final.

The Provincial Under 16 Curling Championships, with three boy’s rinks and five girl’s teams taking part, got underway Friday at the Silver Fox Curling Club in Summerside, with two draws completed.

File photo: Brayden Snow

The host club’s Brayden Snow team is undefeated at 2-0 on the double round robin boy’s side, stealing an extra-end single in a 6-5 shading of the Chase MacMillan rink from Charlottetown, and leading 11-0 after 4 ends in a 14-5 victory over the Samuel Shaw team from Montague.

File photo: Rachel MacLean

In the single-round robin girl’s championship, Cornwall’s Rachel MacLean rink, with Sierra Clyke subbing for her usual teammate Amy Spence to meet the age category, sits at 2-0 after cruising to a pair of high-scoring wins – 13-1 over clubmate Ella Lenentine, and 13-4 over the Clara Jack team, also from Cornwall. Ch’town and Montague men, Sil. Fox, Crapaud and Cornwall women unbeaten after Curling Club Ch’ship Day One

Three draws have been played at the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary as the PEI Curling Club Championship got underway on Friday, with men’s teams from all seven dedicated PEI curling facilities, and women’s rinks from six of the seven competing.

Two teams, the Charlottetown Curling Club foursome skipped by Dennis Watts, and the Matthew MacDonald-skipped Montague squad, are 2-0 in the men’s competition, while three rinks, captained by Melissa Morrow out of the Silver Fox in Summerside, who were finalists in last year’s event, along with Tricia Sanderson from the Crapaud Community Curling Club, and the Kim Nicholson foursome from the Cornwall Curling Club are 1-0 in the women’s event. Tim Hockin and the Summerside men lost 8-7 to Montague in the only extra-end game of the day.

Cornwall’s men’s team, skipped by Mark MacDonald, lost their opener 7-4 to Charlottetown, but beat the host club team, skipped by Bob Matheson, 8-3 in their second game. Cornwall’s Kim Nicholson foursome edged the Bobbi-Jean Boylan-skipped Maple Leaf rink, 7-6.

File photo (L-R): Miranda Ellis, Lindsay Spencer, Melissa Morrow from the Silver Fox

The round robin continues on Saturday and Sunday with 4 draws each day, with all the women’s teams seeing action at 9 am, six of the seven men’s team on the ice at noon, two women’s and one men’s rink playing at 4 pm, and six men’s teams wrapping up each day with the 8 pm draw.

The top three teams from the round robin draws, after any tiebreakers, advance to their respective championship round on Monday and, if needed, Tuesday.

The provincial winners will advance to the national Curling Club Championship, normally held in November. Dates and location have not yet been announced.

Josh McInnis and Ray Biagé rinks win Wed. Ladder League Round Two

Although both teams lost their final game, the Josh McInnis and Ray Biagé teams won the Wendy’s “A” pool and Lowther’s Snow Removal “B” pool, respectively, as round two wrapped up this week in the Wednesday evening Ladder League. Both teams had only two losses in the round.

(L-R): Bob Deziel, Jesse Kennedy, Mitch Dunphy, Josh McInnis

Last round’s “A” winner, the Shelley Ebbett team, had the same win-loss record as the McInnis rink, but lost to them in their round robin encounter, so they missed out on the Wendy’s gift certificates from sponsor D.P. Murphy Inc.

The Biagé team won the “B” pool thanks to Mark MacDonald, who picked up a win over Rachel MacLean in a final-night battle of second-place teams. Had MacLean won, she would have taken the first place prize from sponsor Lowther’s Snow Removal (gift certificates for the Cornwall Curling Club), as she and Biagé would have had the same record (two losses), and she had beaten Biagé in their round robin match. Since the Biagé foursome had beaten the MacDonald team in their game, they won the round via the head-to-head results.

(L-R): Ray Biagé, Rick Doiron, Rebecca Rolfe, Derek MacEwen

On the final night, Biagé, who was guaranteed first place with a win, was in a see-saw battle with Kelly Watts, and needed a deuce in the final end for the win, but had to settle for a single, and a tie game. In the draw to the button to determine the winner, both teams came short of the rings on their first attempt, but found the house on their second, with Watts coming closer to the button.

Looking at the teams for the next round, which will be only six weeks, Biagé, MacDonald, and MacLean will all be going up the ladder to the A pool, while Emily Sanderson, with two wins, (including a win over the first place team on the last night) will be going down the ladder to the “B”. There was a log jam of four teams with three wins in the “A” pool – Kim Nicholson, Paul Neima, Rob Gallant, and Greg Robertson. Amazingly (or good planning?), Neima’s three wins came at the hands of all three of the other teams, so he’s “safe” in A.
Gallant beat the two remaining teams – Nicholson and Robertson, so he’s safe, too.
That leaves the Kim Nicholson and Greg Robertson teams to join the Emily Sanderson foursome in the trip down the ladder to the “B” pool.

We’ll do the Round 3 draw in the next day or two. It looks like either surf or turf is on the menu for the last round winners, as the “A” pool will be sponsored by Robert I. Clow Ltd. (aka Clow’s Red and White in Hampshire, famous for their meat), while the “B” is sponsored by New Glasgow Lobster Suppers.

Upcoming Stick Curling Opportunities

With the Maritime Stick coming up in March 15-17, at the Cornwall Curling Club, there is a strong possibility that NB may not fill all their quota of 4 open and 4 women’s teams If there are vacancies in the Open division, they will be filled by teams who participated in the PEI Provincial Stick Ch’ship.. Teams will be invited according to their order of finish at our Provincials as has been the custom in the past. For the women’s division, since we had only 4 teams at our Provincials, any women’s team is invited to apply. If there are more applying than needed, they will draw by lot. Stick Curl PEI pays the $110 registration fee for all our teams.

Also, for the Canadian Stick on March 31- April 3 (also at Cornwall), there are currently 46 teams registered in the Open division. Organizers would really like to have 2 more (48 total) to make a nice simple draw and to be able to say that PEI filled the draw. Again, if there is interest from more than 2 teams they will draw by lot. If you are interested, please contact Ernie Stavert. The registration fee, if you are selected, is  $160 per team and includes a banquet at Rodd’s Royalty. The women’s division is over-filled with 14 teams so they are not looking for any more entries for that category.

14 teams take part in U13 Spiel at Cornwall

Our Under 13 Funspiel was held on February 9th, at Cornwall Curling Club. We had a total of 14 teams from six PEI curling clubs – Maple Leaf in O’Leary, Silver Fox in Summerside, Crapaud, Charlottetown, Cornwall, and Montague. The event was a huge success and had a pretty big crowd.

Each curler walked away with a prize — no one was left out!
Here are a number of pictures – we apologize for any team photos missed, but it was a busy day and hard to get them all. Click on a photo to enlarge, and use arrows to go ahead/back. Organizer Kelli-Lynn Younker would like to thank the many sponsors — Cornwall Pizza Delight, Charlottetown Toyota, Browns Volkswagen, Purity Dairy, A &W, Leary’s Independent Grocery, and Mt.Edward grocer for the many donations, and to thank her volunteers David Younker, and Chris MacDougall for helping to set up, and to organize the event, and says that she looks forward to hosting again.

Kim Aylward rink wins come-from-behind PEI Senior Women’s Final over Cornwall’s Shelley Ebbett team on a measure

It not only came down to the last rock, but they had to measure to determine the winner, as the Kim Aylward rink from the host Silver Fox Curling Club in Summerside, trailing 5-2 after six ends this afternoon, scored a triple in end seven and stole a single in the final end to edge the Shelley Ebbett team from the Cornwall Curling Club by a 6-5 score to win the PEI Senior Women’s title, and a trip to the 2019 Everest Canadian Senior Curling Championships, Mar. 23-28 at the new Chilliwack Curling Centre in Chilliwack BC.

Winning team (L-R): Donna Whelan, Debbie Caissy, Shelley MacFadyen, Kim Aylward, Curl PEI Past President Andrew Robinson

Aylward, who had a 6-2 win-loss record in the modified triple knockout event, advanced to the final against Ebbett by eliminating defending champion Shirley Berry and her Cornwall rink with a 9-5 victory in the morning semi-final. Each of the three teams involved in the championship round had  won one triple knockout section, but Ebbett had received a bye to the final game by virtue of playing in all three qualifier games.

Finalist team (L-R): Colleen Soltermann, Kim Pippy, Paulette Richard, Shelley Ebbett

Other members of the Pat Aylward-coached winning team are third Debbie Caissy, second stone Shelley MacFadyen, and lead Donna Whelan. Rounding out the Ebbett finalist team are third stone Kim Pippy, second Paulette Richard, and lead Colleen Soltermann.

On Monday morning, the Philip Gorveatt rink from the Charlottetown Curling Complex and the Montague Curling Rink won the Senior Men’s title, after edging the Dale Cannon team from the host Silver Fox Curling Club in Summerside by a 4-3 score in a closely-fought game, with neither team taking more than a single point in an end. The Gorveatt rink, which includes third Kevin Champion, second stone Larry Richards, and lead Mike Dillon, had won two of the three sections of the modified triple knockout draw, giving them two chances to win the championship, but the second game was not needed.

Six men’s and six women’s teams took part in this provincial championship, with men’s and women’s divisions for curlers age 50 and over.

Meanwhile, the defending champion Shirley Berry rink from the Cornwall Curling Club will not be returning to the national this season, after losing in this morning’s semi-final by a 9-5 score to the host club’s Kim Aylward rink. Aylward, who took four points in the fourth end, stole a single in the fifth, and a deuce in the sixth en route to the win, and ran Berry out of rocks in the final end, will face Cornwall’s Shelley Ebbett rink in the 2 pm women’s final.

PEI Seniors playoffs today: Cornwall’s Berry vs Aylward with winner playing Cornwall’s Ebbett in women’s, Gorveatt vs Cannon in men’s

The Championship Round is set for 10 am and 2 pm (the men’s 2 pm draw may not be necessary) today as the PEI Seniors Curling Championships. with Men’s and Women’s divisions for curlers age 50 and over wraps up at the Silver Fox in Summerside. Modified triple knockout play concluded Sunday afternoon, with the Philip Gorveatt rink from Charlottetown and the Kim Aylward foursome from the host club winning the final Qualifier matches.

L-R: Mike Dillon, Larry Richards, Philip Gorveatt

Gorveatt won both the men’s A and C qualifiers, and is now one game away from the Senior Men’s title, as he has a “double life” in the championship round and will win the championship if he takes either game, both against B section winner Dale Cannon from Summerside, while Cannon must win both games. Gorveatt scored a triple in the third end to win an otherwise low scoring contest by a 5-2 score against Cannon in the “C” final this afternoon,

Berry (left) and Ebbett

There are three separate women’s section winners, with defending champion Shirley Berry from Cornwall winning the “A” Qualifier, her clubmate Shelley Ebbett winning the “B”, and Aylward taking the “C”, with a 7-5 victory over Ebbett Sunday afternoon,  aided by a four-point fourth end.

The rules state that if there are three separate winners, the one who played in the most section qualifiers gets the bye to the 2 pm match. Ebbett played in all three and consequently will play the winner of the 10 am semi-final match between Berry and Aylward in the 2 pm final.

The event winners will advance to the 2019 Everest Canadian Senior Curling Championships, Mar. 23-28 at the new Chilliwack Curling Centre in Chilliwack BC.
Six men’s and six women’s teams took part in this provincial championship.
