The playoff round goes today at the Canadian Open Stick Curling Championship here in Cornwall, with the Open (men and mixed) and Women’s finals at 3:20 pm.

Under 18 in Sherwood Park Alberta: Cornwall’s Lauren Ferguson girl’s rink are 1-0 following opening day play, with a 5-3 win over Saskatchewan. They play the Yukon and Nova Scotia today. The Mitchell Schut boy’s team, also from the Cornwall Curling Club, is 1-1, following a loss to Nova Scotia and a 5-4 win over Josh Nowlan and his New Brunswick team. Nowlan is the grandson of PEI curlers Lou and Marg Nowlan.  Team Schut faces Newfoundland and Labrador, and Saskatchewan today.

Canadian Masters in Saskatoon: round robin play wraps up today. Cornwall’s Bill Hope men’s rink is 1-3 following Tuesday losses to Newfoundland/Labrador and Saskatchewan, and play the Yukon and Quebec today, while Cornwall’s Sandy Hope women’s team is 2-1 following wins over the Yukon and Quebec yesterday and play Newfoundland/Labrador and Saskatchewan today.

Future Canadian curling stars are converging in Sherwood Park, Alta., for the third edition of the Canadian Under-18 Boys and Girls Curling Championships, beginning today at the Glen Allan Recreation Complex.

Both the Nova Scotia boy’s and girl’s teams are aiming to defend their titles after sweeping the competition last year in Saint Andrews, N.B.

Nova Scotia boys vice-skip Owen Purcell and lead Scott Weagle return from last year’s lineup, this time joined by skip Adam McEachren and second Alex McDonah from the Truro Curling Club. Coach Anthony Purcell returns as coach.

It is Purcell’s third national championship this season. He threw fourth stones for Nova Scotia at the 2019 New Holland Canadian Juniors and third for Dalhousie University Tigers at the 2019 U SPORTS-Curling Canada Championships.

Alberta will have two boys teams at the event. The first team, which won the Alberta U-18 title, is skipped by Nathan Molberg from the St. Albert Curling Club. His team played at the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, Alta., last month and advanced to the quarter-finals with a 7-3 round-robin record.

Alberta will also have a host team skipped by Cortland Sonnenberg, the son of Renée, who skipped Alberta at the 1999 and 2001 Scotties Tournament of Hearts. Sonnenberg is also a coach for the Curling Canada women’s program and analytics lead.

Fourteen boys teams will compete for the title. Nunavut and Yukon are not sending representation; therefore those spots were filled by the Alberta host team and, because it won last year’s competition, Nova Scotia received a second spot in the boy’s event – the Ethan Young rink from Halifax.

On the women’s side the defending Nova Scotia girl’s champions, skipped by Isabelle Ladouceur, will not be in the competition but the province still has strong representation. Cally Moore of the Mayflower Curling Club in Halifax aims to build on the bronze medal she earned at the 2019 Canada Winter Games.

However, the Canada Winter Games gold-medallists might have something to say about that. Northern Ontario’s Bella Croisier hopes to win her second gold medal in Alberta in just over the span of a month at the U-18 championships after earning gold for Ontario at the Canada Winter Games.

The quartet of Lauren Ferguson, Katie Shaw, Alexis Burris and Lexie Murray from the Cornwall Curling Club in Prince Edward Island will also reach a special milestone this season. This will be third time they’ve represented P.E.I. at a national curling championship this season after playing at the New Holland Canadian Juniors and Canada Winter Games.

Nunavut is not represented in the girl’s competition this year; therefore in addition to Alberta’s championship team skipped by Jessica Wytrychowski (Airdrie Curling Club), Alberta will also have a host team led by Julia Bakos from the Crestwood Curling Club in Edmonton.

The teams competing will attempt to continue a trend that’s been set over the first two years of the event. Each year a province has swept both the boy’s and girl’s titles. Northern Ontario won both titles during the inaugural championships in 2017 and Nova Scotia did the same in 2018.

The fourteen teams in both the boys and girls competitions are divided into two pools of seven. They’ll play a six-game round robin with the top four teams from each pool advancing to a double-knockout bracket that will qualify four teams for the medal-round games. Those four teams compete in the semifinals with the winners advancing to the gold-medal games and the losers playing for bronze.

This is a reminder and an update on the Junior Spring Leagues scheduled to start this weekend. 

The four-person teams WILL start on Saturday for sure as there are 6 teams confirmed so far.  If you have a team interested in playing OR if you have some curlers interested in finding a team to play with for the Spring League, please let Amy at Curl PEI (aduncan@sportpei.pe.ca) know as soon as possible.

The Doubles League only has three teams so far so they are still looking for more teams.  This one also has a few issues with availability and so, it looks like the bulk, if not all, games will be played on April 12 & 14 (registration will be adjusted accordingly).  Again, if you have a team or a curler who would like to play please let Amy know as soon as possible.

The Junior Year End Closing Party is on Sunday, April 7th from 1-2:30 pm. There will be pizza, and milk. The junior curlers are invited to bring their skates to skate on the ice. Please wear a helmet!

SAINT JOHN, N.B. – The P.E.I. 55+ Games Society recently sent a contingent of 90 participants to the 2018 Canada 55+ Games in Saint John, N.B.

The Games are a biennial event encompassing more than 20 events ranging from very active sports like hockey and tennis to more sedentary competitions like Scrabble and bridge. P.E.I. was represented in hockey, curling, swimming, track and field, cycling, bowling, golf, bocce, and Scrabble.

The Cornwall Curling Club rink of Gloria Clarke, Ruth Stavert, Elaine Hughes, and Janette Fraser won the 65-plus women’s curling division while the 55-plus men’s rink of Philip McInnis, Pius McInnis, Cornwall member David Murphy, and Alan Long were defeated in their medal qualifying game.

Swimmers Letty Abbott (two gold and a bronze) and Ann Andrews (four bronze) had strong showings.

In the 75-plus bowling competition the team of Hector MacDonald, Margaret Wigginton, Norma Morrissey, Vera MacLeod and Foch McNally won gold. In singles, MacDonald won silver and Wigginton bronze.

Phyllis McCabe won silver in the Scrabble competition.

In the hockey competition, P.E.I.’s 55-plus men won bronze, the 65-plus men lost in the bronze medal game, the 70-plus men did not qualify for the medal round and the women missed the medal round on a tie-breaking formula.

The 2020 Canada 55+ Games will be held in Kamloops, B.C., from Aug. 25-28.

All eyes in Fredericton are on some of the biggest names in curling at the 2019 Canadian Mixed Doubles Championship. But there’s other teams flying under the radar and honing in on playoff spots after the conclusion of Thursday’s draws at Willie O’Ree Place.

Teams such as Jocelyn Peterman/Brett Gallant, Laura Walker/Kirk Muyres, Jennifer Jones/Brent Laing and Jolene Campbell/John Morris are exactly where most expect them – at the top of the standings.

But with 12 of the 32 teams making the playoffs, there’s still some room for up-and-coming teams to lock a spot in Saturday’s playoff games.

British Columbia’s Catera Park and Cody Tanaka are a pair that have done just that. With a 4-1 record, they’ve doubled their original win-total goal and are now tied for first in Pool A with the likes of Peterman/Gallant and Tyler Tardi/Dezeray Hawes.

The duo had a big day on Thursday, first defeating Tardi – the reigning world and Canadian junior champion – with his partner Hawes 9-7, followed by besting the Saskatchewan duo of 2017 Canadian junior champion Kristen Streifel and 2015 Tim Hortons Brier bronze-medallist Steve Laycock 8-4.

Park and Tanaka left the ice feeling a big dose of pride, with a side of relief.

“I don’t know what to say,” a speechless Park said following their two-win day. “We came into this hoping for the best, for at least two wins so it’s really nice to know we’re pulling it out.”

A score of four in the fifth end, followed by single steals in the sixth and seventh ends were enough to elevate Park and Tanaka to victory in the afternoon against Streifel/Laycock. It also gave them the confidence to remain competitive as teams battle it out for playoff positioning.

One of the most important things they can do, according to them, is to remain focused and treat their upcoming round-robin games just like any other.

“It makes us feel good to know we’re in every game and just because some of these players are on the tour doesn’t mean anything. They’re just another team we’re trying to beat,” Tanaka said.

The fickle disposition of mixed doubles curling means the results can be decided by big moments in a game. Teams leading can quickly lose control of the reigns due to a few errors that are capitalized on. Park and Tanaka are feeling good about their ability to remain neck-and-neck with many of these teams and continue making the big shot when needed.

“We were talking about how it takes three or four key shots that can change the outcome,” Park said.

While the duo are new to the national mixed doubles championship though they’re not strangers to representing British Columbia. They both played for British Columbia at the 2019 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship. Tanaka threw fourth stones for the province, and won gold, at the 2019 Travellers Curling Club Championships, while Park has played at four different championships for the province; the aforementioned mixed and mixed doubles nationals, along with the 2018 New Holland Canadian Juniors and the U-18 Optimist Curling Championship.

Park and Tanaka complete the round robin on Friday with two games. First they’ll take on [PEI native] Allison Griffin and Ed MacDonald from Nunavut at 10 a.m. (all time AST), followed by Winnipeg’s Ashley Groff/Kyle Doering at 4 p.m.

The top team from each of the four pools advances to the quarter-finals, while the remaining eight teams with the best records will play in elimination games to qualify for a spot in the quarters.

Should Park and Tanaka advance to the weekend, they’ll be facing some stiff competition against some of the biggest names in curling.

“These are the kinds of people that I grew up admiring and knowing we’re playing right beside them it’s quite an honour,” Tanaka said.

Shannon Birchard and Catlin Schneider remain atop Pool B with a perfect 5-0 record. Walker/Muyres had an opportunity to remain at the top of pool too, but succumbed to New Brunswick’s Leah Thompson/Charlie Sullivan 9-6 on Thursday afternoon.

In Pool C, Nancy Martin and Tyrel Griffith served Kadriana Sahaidak and Colton Lott their first loss of the tournament, however they dropped to 4-1 after losing to Quebec’s Sophie and Pierre-Luc Morissette in the evening. Jones/Laing remain the only unbeaten team with a 5-0 record after serving losses to Newfoundland and Labrador’s Jenna Harvey/Dave Thomas and Saskatchewan’s Jill deGooijer/Garret Springer on Thursday.

Olympic mixed doubles champion Morris and his partner Campbell lead the way in Pool D with a 5-0 record. They ground out a 7-5 come-from-behind win against Northern Ontario’s Kira Brunton and Tom Leonard, followed by a 10-3 victory against Prince Edward Island’s Rachel O’Connor and Ryan Abraham (1-4).

The round robin will be complete on Friday after games at 10 a.m., 1 p.m., 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.

FREDERICTON, N.B. — The Laurentian Voyageurs won the 2019 U SPORTS women’s curling championship, while the Carleton Ravens captured the men’s title. In the bronze medal games, the Alberta Golden Bears scored a 7-3 win over the Dalhousie Tigers, to finish third on the men’s side, while Dalhousie’s Kaitlyn Jones scored one in the 10^thend to beat Queen’s 6-5 for third in the women’s tournament. Dal finished 1st in both the men’s and women’s round robins with 6-1 records.

The Douglas Royals are the 2019 CCAA Curling Canada Women’s Champions following a 7-5 victory over the MacEwan Griffins. In men’s, the Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder’s dominant play led to a 10-4 victory over the Humber Hawks. The Holland College women’s team finished play with a 1-6 win-loss record., 

The first and second all-star teams as determined by shooting percentages during the round robin, and other awards winners at the 2019 U SPORTS and CCAA – Curling Canada Championships were announced on Tuesday night at the closing banquet.

Cornwall’s Lauren Lenentine, third on the Dalhousie women’s team skipped by Kaitlyn Jones, made the “All-Canadian” 2nd team.

The PEI squad play Reid Carruthers and Kate Cameron from Manitoba at 1 pm and Wayne and Kim Tuck from Ontario at 7 pm today. The 1 pm game with Carruthers/Cameron is scheduled to be live streamed on CBC.

The 2019 Canadian Mixed Doubles Championship begins on Tuesday at 7 pm after the completion of the university and college events. While it’s the first time the national championship has been held in Fredericton, the city hosted the World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship in 2013.

The PEI Under 13 Curling Championships wrapped up Sunday at the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton, with the 9:30 am semi-finals and 1 pm finals for the A, B, and C divisions of this “Open” event, which means there could be any combination of boys and/or girls on a team. This year’s winning teams were very similar to last years, with the Brayden Snow foursome from the Silver Fox Curling Club in Summerside going undefeated to win the “A” division. Snow was a member of last year’s winning team and also skipped this year’s U16 championship rink. The “B” champions were again the Ella Lenentine squad from the Cornwall Curling Club, while the “C” winners were again the Sydney Carver rink from Montague, with the same curlers on the team as last year.

The Brayden Snow rink from the Silver Fox in Summerside was impressive in the round robin, winning both their games by wide margins and earning a bye to the 1 pm Sunday “A” Final where they again won by a wide margin, over the Isaiah Dalton team from Charlottetown and Cornwall. The Dalton rink edged the Nate Shaw foursome from Montague 7-6 in the morning semi-final, with Shaw, who was a finalist last year. keeping it close by scoring 5 points in the last two ends

The Ella Lenentine rink from Cornwall successfully defended last year’s “B” division title, winning by a big margin over the James MacWilliams rink from the Maple Leaf in the Sunday afternoon final. MacWilliams and his team beat their clubmates, the Jorja McLellan team, in the morning semi-final.

The Sydney Carver rink from Montague, won the “C” again this year with a 6-3 win over the Mollie Shaw team from Charlottetown. Shaw beat the Carly Sweet and Mary Jane Gavin-Shea squad from the Maple Leaf club in the semi-final.

During the closing ceremonies, the Sportsmanship award, as voted on by the players, was presented to Sydney Carver.
