Gold for Team Canada’s women, including Cornwall’s Lauren Lenentine, at World Juniors (Curling Canada)

Canada’s Kaitlyn Jones is bringing home a gold medal after a 7-4 win over Sweden’s Isabella Wranaa today at the 2018 World Junior Curling Championships in Aberdeen, Scotland.

Jones, third Kristin Clarke, second Karlee Burgess, lead Lindsey Burgess, alternate Lauren Lenentine and coach Andrew Atherton put on a show in the final, making shot after shot with pinpoint accuracy and giving Wranaa, the 2017 world junior champion, very few opportunities to get any offence going.

The turning point was a score of three in the fifth end that gave Canada a 5-2 lead at the break. The teams traded singles in the next two ends, but Jones stole a point in the eighth to take a 7-3 lead. After that, it was an exercise in keeping the house clean.

“It’s indescribable, I feel amazing right now,” said an elated Jones after the game. “I know I put everything out there on the line today and came out on top, and that’s an incredible feeling.”

“It (was our) goal to force them to one, and we got the end-goal that we wanted,” she said about the team’s winning strategy during the final. “Whenever they had the hammer we wanted to keep them close to one.”

“I’m super proud of my team,” she added. “We’ve worked so hard to get here, and for me moving all the way across Canada to play with them, it was one of the best decisions I’ve made.”

For Clarke and Karlee Burgess, this marks a return to the podium. Both were on the 2016 world championship team, skipped by Mary Fay. Jones joined the team this season after moving to Nova Scotia from Saskatchewan, where she was the 2017 provincial champion.

China’s Zixin Wang won the bronze medal with an 11-5 win over Norway’s Maia Ramsfjell.

The Canadian junior men, skipped by Tyler Tardi, will meet Scotland’s Ross Whyte in the men’s final at 10 a.m. AT. The game will be streamed live on the WCF YouTube channel at https://youtu.be/C3aQLuvCnm8

Cornwall men 1-1, women 0-1 after Travelers Day One

Three draws are complete following opening day action at the PEI Travelers Curling Club Championships at the Montague Curling Club. All seven men’s teams have played two games each, while the six women’s rinks have each played one, with the Silver Fox and Western Community club champs leading the men’s side at 2-0, and the teams from Crapaud, Montague, and the Silver Fox sporting 1-0 records on the women’s side.

Despite the stormy weather, Saturday games are planned to go ahead, with women’s draws at 9 am and 4 pm, and men’s draws at noon and 8 pm, plus one men’s game (Maple Leaf vs Silver Fox) at 4 pm. Curl PEI’s Rules of Play state that if an event is able to start, and there are local accommodations available, that it will continue as scheduled, provided the necessary personnel (umpire/ice maker) can safely get to the host club.

On the men’s side, the Jamie Newson squad from the Silver Fox in Summerside, along with the Daryl MacDonald foursome from the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton, three of whom are former PEI Travelers champs, are undefeated after Friday play, with 2-0 records. Charlottetown (Paul MacCormack, Crapaud (Alan Inman), and Cornwall (Garth Cudmore) are 1-1, while the host club team, skipped by Larry Richards and the Bob Matheson rink from the Maple Leaf in O’Leary are 0-2. Cornwall’s Cudmore team lost a very close opener 6-4 to Charlottetown but rebounded to beat Bob Matheson and his Maple Leaf team 7-4, taking a triple in the third en route to the win.

Newson beat Richards 4-2 in his opener, and kept MacCormack off the scoreboard in all but two ends with a 9-4 win. MacDonald won both his games, over Matheson and Inman, by 7-5 scores.

MacDonald plays Newson at 8 pm on Saturday.

On the women’s side, the Amanda Holm rink from Crapaud won their opener 9-6 over Western Community, skipped by former PEI Travelers champ Sharon Horne, capitalizing on a couple of missed takeouts to grab four points in the first end, and also picked up a triple in the third.

Tammy Dewar and her host club team also won their opening match, 7-5 over Annika Kelly and her team from Charlottetown, with help from a four-point fourth end.

Also undefeated at 1-0 is the Melissa Morrow foursome from the Silver Fox in Summerside, following a 6-4 opening draw win over Cornwall’s Debbie Rhodenhizer team.

Round-robin play continues through Sunday, with the top three teams after any tiebreakers advancing to their respective championship round on Monday and, if needed, Tuesday.

Live results are available at PEICurling.com

The provincial winners will advance to the national Travelers Curling Club Championship, normally held in November. Dates and location have not yet been announced.

Team Canada Women, which includes Cornwall’s Lenentine as Alternate, in semis at 10 am – watch on livestream

Semifinals for Team Canada men and women at World Juniors (Curling Canada)

Team Canada’s Tyler Tardi and Kaitlyn Jones wrapped up the round robin in second place at the 2018 World Junior Curling Championships on Thursday. Both teams will move on to Friday’s semifinals at Curl Aberdeen in Aberdeen, Scotland.

Tardi, with third Sterling Middleton, second Jordan Tardi, lead Zachary Curtis, alternate Jacques Gauthier and coach Paul Tardi, finished off the round robin with confidence, taking a 7-5 win over Russia in the morning, then cruising to a 4-2 win over Germany in the final draw on Thursday evening at Curl Aberdeen.

“It feels petty good to qualify, especially after last year – that was disappointing to say the least,” said Tardi who finished out of the playoffs in fifth place at the 2017 championships. “We fought to get back here and I’m really proud that we were able to come back and make the playoffs.”

With the win, Tardi and crew finish in second place with a 7-2 record, just ahead of third-place Andrew Stopera of the USA, who also finished 7-2, but who lost to Canada in the round robin. The two teams will meet again in the semifinal on Friday, while undefeated Scotland will face off against fourth-place Switzerland.

The game against USA will have an added significance for Tardi, thanks to a long-time friendship with Luc Violette, the USA third.

“I’ve known Luc since I was about 11 because we had competitions between our two clubs growing up,” Tardi said. “We’re good friends on the ice and off the ice, so it’ll be good.”

“To us having the hammer is huge,” he added, noting the importance of taking his second-placing standing into the semifinal. “They keep it a little more open than other teams and we usually have a big momentum boost when we have it.”

On Thursday afternoon, Halifax-based Kaitlyn Jones, with third Kristin Clarke, second Karlee Burgess, lead Lindsey Burgess, alternate Lauren Lenentine and coach Andrew Atherton, lost the final game of the round robin, 8-6 to Sweden’s Isabella Wranaa (9-0).

Despite the loss, Canada finishes solidly in second place with a 7-2 record and will face third-place China (5-4) in one of the semifinals on Friday. Sweden will play Norway, the fourth-place finisher.

The women’s semifinals take place on Friday at 10 a.m. AT, while the men take to the ice at 3 p.m. AT.

Mitchell Schut and Lauren Ferguson rinks win PEI Under 16 championships

It’s two championships in six days for both Mitchell Schut from the Cornwall Curling Club and Lauren Ferguson from the Charlottetown, Cornwall and Crapaud clubs, capturing the Under 16 championships on Sunday afternoon at the Montague Curling Rink after winning the Under 18 on Monday. It’s also the third year in a row for Schut winning the U16Boy’s, while two members of the Ferguson foursome – Katie Shaw and Lexie Murray, were on last year’s Girl’s winning team.

Boy’s Champions Photo (L-R): Larry Richards (Montague Curling Rink representative), Dylan Moase (lead), Sean Peric (2nd), Liam Kelly (3rd), Mitchell Schut (skip), Mike Schut (coach)

Team Schut beat last year’s runner-up, the Chase MacMillan rink from Charlottetown, by an 8-5 score in the Sunday morning semi-final, stealing a triple in the third end, and taking another three in the fifth on the way to the win. The Cruz Pineau rink from the Silver Fox in Summerside beat the fourth team in the competition, the Samuel Shaw team from the host club, 9-2 in the semi to advance to the final against the Schut squad. Pineau, going into the final undefeated, had previously handed Schut his only loss in the event, by a 10-4 score.

Boy’s Finalist Photo (L-R): Larry Richards (Montague Curling Rink representative), Noah Gallant (third), Shelley MacFadyen (coach), Cruz Pineau (skip), Brock Rochford (2nd), Brayden Snow (lead)

In the high-scoring final, Pineau opened with a triple, but Schut came back with four in the second. The teams then traded triples, giving Schut a 7-6 lead at the fourth-end break. A pair of singles gave Pineau a 7-6 lead after six. Schut scored three in the seventh and ran Pineau out of rocks in eighth for a 10-8 win. Schut’s team included Liam Kelly from his regular team at third, with Sean Peric from the host club joining the rink at second, and Dylan Moase, who normally curls on his brother Devin Schut’s team, at lead. Devin and their father Mike Schut shared coaching duties. Rounding out the Pineau finalist team were third Brock Rochford, second Noah Gallant, and lead Brayden Snow, with coach Shelley MacFadyen.

Girl’s Champions Photo (L-R): Larry Richards (Montague Curling Rink representative), Lauren Ferguson (skip), Katie Shaw (3rd), Alexis Burris (2nd), Lexie Murray (lead), David Murphy (coach)

Ferguson’s semi-final game in the six-team Girl’s division was against Gracie Gaudet and her Charlottetown team, and was tied at 3-3 after five ends of play. Ferguson then scored a deuce in six and a steal of four in the seventh for a 9-3 lead coming home, running Gaudet out of rocks in the last end. The other semi was a closely-fought contest between Cornwall clubmates Rachel MacLean, and Sydney Howatt, with the teams tied 3-3 at break. MacLean was kept to 1 in five, with Howatt blanking the sixth and giving up a steal of one in the seventh. She was unable to score in the eighth, with MacLean winning 5-3, and setting up the final between the two undefeated teams in the event, Ferguson and MacLean.

Girl’s Finalist Photo (L-R): Larry Richards (Montague Curling Rink representative), Rachel MacLean (skip), Jordan Dunphy-Condon (3rd), Avery Nicholson (2nd), Ella Lenentine (lead), Carl Nicholson (coach)

In the final, MacLean had a 3-2 lead after three ends, but Ferguson picked up four points in the fourth to grab the lead with a 6-3 score. MacLean scored singles in ends five and seven, with Ferguson scoring a deuce in the sixth, to lead 8-5 coming home, running MacLean out of rocks in the final end.

The winning Ferguson team includes Katie Shaw at third, Alexis Burris at second, and Lexie Murray at lead, with coach David Murphy. Completing the finalist MacLean rink were third Jordan Dunphy-Condon, second Avery Nicholson, and lead Ella Lenentine. Carl Nicholson is coach.

Awards

Following the finals and the presentations to the teams, the awards for Sportsmanship, as voted on by all the players, and Coaching, as voted on by the coaches in the event, were handed out, with the Boy’s Sportsmanship award going to Brock Rochford from Team Pineau, the Girl’s going to skip Rachel MacLean, and the Coaching award going to Shelley MacFadyen, coach of Team Pineau.

Canadian junior champs recover from travel ordeals to start strong on 1st day of World Juniors (Curling Canada)

(Cornwall’s Lauren Lenentine is Alternate on Team Canada Women.)
Team Canada’s women’s and men’s teams kicked off with wins all round today at the 2018 World Junior Curling Championships, a huge accomplishment considering the travel ordeal both teams endured on the way to Aberdeen, Scotland.

Team Canada’s Karlee Burgess (second) and Lindsey Burgess (lead) sweep third Kristin Clarke’s rock during 2018 World Junior Curling Championship action at Curl Aberdeen in Aberdeen, Scotland (WCF/Emile Gareev photo)

“We had lots of trouble getting here,” admitted skip Kaitlyn Jones of Halifax, N.S., who is backed by third Kristin Clarke, second Karlee Burgess, lead Lindsey Burgess, alternate Lauren Lenentine and coach Andrew Atherton.

The team travelled for over 50 hours in a storm-delayed marathon thanks to the extreme winter weather that hit the United Kingdom over the past week.

“We went from Halifax to St. John’s, N.L., and had to get off the plane and back on,” Jones explained. “From there to London – that was only five hours. We had an hour layover there. Then from London, we actually came to Aberdeen, but we had to circle because there was too much snow and then we had to go to Manchester and they wouldn’t let us land there. Then we had to go to Liverpool and we sat on the tarmac for three hours and finally went back to London, and sat on the tarmac there for another two hours. So, we were on the same plane for nine hours (without) food. We had to stay the night in London and then travelled to Aberdeen the next day.”

The Canadian men’s team, skipped by Langley, B.C.’s Tyler Tardi with third Sterling Middleton, second Jordan Tardi, lead Zachary Curtis, alternate Jacques Gauthier and coach Paul Tardi faced similar delays, although they were able to deplane in London and wait it out in a hotel.

The Canadians weren’t the only competitors to have difficulty travelling to Aberdeen. Because so many teams were delayed, the usual pre-event practice was cancelled on Friday to keep it fair for all teams. That meant that Draw 1 (women) and Draw 2 (men) was the first time any of these national junior champions had a chance to step on the ice at Curl Aberdeen.

“It was a little bit shaky because we hadn’t practiced or played a game in a while,” said Jones about her team’s first game, an 8-5 win over China’s Zixin Wang. “But by the end we got the ice under control and knew where to (put) the broom. Having that first win and starting off real strong, I’m very happy with that.”

In Draw 3, their second game of the day, the Canadian women had their hands full with an experienced Turkish team skipped by Dilsat Yildiz, who has represented her country at Women’s, Mixed and Mixed Doubles world championships.

The teams were tied after eight, and Jones scored a single in nine to take a 6-5 lead. Facing two Canadian counters, Dilsat tried an in-off but just over-curled, giving up a steal of two in an 8-5 win for Canada.

Tardi and crew had an easier time in their one game of the day, scoring four points in the ninth end to take a 7-3 win over Switzerland’s Jan Hess.

Team Canada skip Tyler Tardi calls to sweepers Jordan Tardi and Sterling Middleton during Day 1 action at the World Junior Curling Championships in Aberdeen, Scotland (WCF/Emile Gareev photo)

“It’s good to start with a win, especially against a team like that,” said Tardi, who is making his second consecutive trip to the world championships. “They made a ton of shots out there, lots of respect to them. They’re all great shooters and also a super-friendly team.”

Tardi said his team prepared differently this time around, using their 2017 experience as a guide.

“We were a little smarter coming out the event this year,” he said. “Last year, we played a little too much curling, were pretty drained before the event started. So, this year we took it a little easier before we came here and are feeling a little more fresh.”

The Canadian teams will be in a 10-team (of each gender) round-robin draw that leads to the four-team Olympic-style semifinals (first place vs. fourth place; second place vs. third place), on Friday, March 9 (there will be no playoff tiebreakers).

Event information, including news and live scoring, are available at the event website, http://www.worldcurling.org/wjcc2018

Semi-finals set at U16

The 10 am Sunday semi-final round is set at the Provincial Under 16 Curling Championships in Montague, with the winners advancing to the Boy’s and Girl’s finals at 2 pm.

On the Boy’s side, where all four teams make the semi-finals, the Cruz Pineau team from the Silver Fox in Summerside, who finished round robin play with a perfect 3-0 record, following a 10-4 win  Saturday morning over two-time defending champ Mitchell Schut  and his Cornwall team, will take on the fourth place Samuel Shaw foursome from the host club, who are 0-3 after round robin play. Second place Schut (2-1) will play third-place Chase MacMillan from Charlottetown, who is 1-2 following a lopsided win over Shaw this morning.

On the six-team Girl’s side, the Lauren Ferguson team from Charlottetown, Cornwall, and Crapaud, which includes two members of last year’s winning team, along with the Rachel MacLean rink from Cornwall, had Saturday off, after finishing round robin play with perfect 2-0 records in their respective pools on Friday, earning byes to the Sunday semis. Ferguson will be playing Gracie Gaudet and her Charlottetown squad, who fought back from a 4-2 deficit after six ends in their game against Cornwall’s Clara Jack today, scoring singles in the seventh and eighth ends to tie the game, and stealing four points in the eighth for an 8-4 victory. MacLean will take on Cornwall clubmate Sydney Howatt, who stole five in the sixth end to bring her game against Montague’s Victoria McDonald to an early conclusion.

Cornwall sweeps 55+ Games Stick Curling medals

It’s no surprise that the Cornwall Curling Club won all the medals in the Stick Curling competition at the Vogue Optical 55+ Games, hosted by the Town of Stratford, with curling at the Charlottetown Curling Complex, considering their past results, and the fact that all the entries but one were from there. The Gold medals winners were the team of Vernon Chowan & Grant Leard in the Open (any combination of men and women) division, and the Ruth Stavert & Karen Fisher duo in the women’s. The Games wrapped up on Friday.

Here are the Friday Stick results and medallists. Congrats to all 12 of our Stick winners! We also have some double medallists, with Elaine Hughes, Etta Reid and Myrna Craswell medalling in both regular and stick curling.

If we can track down any pictures, well post them later.

Ferguson, MacLean, Pineau, Schut are 2-0 after U16 Opening Day

Two draws are complete, and four teams remain undefeated with 2-0 win-loss records after opening day play at the Curl PEI Provincial Under 16 Curling Championships at the Montague Curling Club.

In the Boy’s four-team single-pool round robin, the two-time defending champ Mitchell Schut squad from Cornwall, along with the Cruz Pineau team from the Silver Fox in Summerside are still unbeaten, with Schut picking up a 4-1 win over Charlottetown’s Chase MacMillan rink and a 10-3 victory over the host club’s Samuel Shaw foursome. Pineau beat Shaw 10-3, and doubled MacMillan 10-5. Unbeaten Pineau and Schut play each other at 10 am Saturday in the final round robin draw, with the winner going into the playoff round in first place, and the other team in second place. MacMillan and Shaw’s game will determine third and fourth. The first place team will play the fourth place team, while the second place rink will play the third-place finisher in the semi-finals at 10 am Sunday, with the winners advancing to the 2 pm final.

The Rachel MacLean team from Cornwall and the Lauren Ferguson team from Charlottetown, Cornwall, and Crapaud, both at 2-0, have already secured first place in their respective pools and have advanced to the second round of the Girl’s playoffs, as well as having Saturday off, as they have byes in both the 10 am final round-robin matches, and the first round of the playoffs, at 2 pm.

In action Friday, MacLean won 5-2 over clubmate Clara Jack, and 9-2 over the host club’s Clara McDonald. Ferguson blanked Charlottetown’s Gracie Gaudet, and stole the last end in a 5-4 shading of Cornwall’s Sydney Howatt. The final round-robin draw goes at 10 am Saturday with the rest of the teams all sitting at 0-1, and their results in the final round-robin round determining their positioning in the first round of the playoffs. The second round goes Sunday at 10, with the final at 2 pm.

PEI Under 16 Ch’ships start today in Montague

The 2018 Provincial Under 16 Curling Championships, with boy’s and girl’s divisions for curlers a maximum of 15 years of age on June 30 2017, take place March 2-4 at the Montague Curling Club.

Three of the four boy’s teams and four of the six girl’s rinks entered, some with roster changes for the different age category, also competed in this past weekend’s Under 18 championship. Half of the teams have Cornwall players.

The Mitchell Schut rink from Cornwall won the U16 boy’s division the last two years, while the Katie Shaw team from Charlottetown took the 2017 girl’s title. Schut, who won the U18 Boy’s title last weekend, is back this year looking to add to his U16 medal collection. U18 Girl’s champ Lauren Ferguson, whose rink includes Shaw, and Lexie Murray from Shaw’s team last year, is also entered.
The Boy’s teams will play a single-pool round robin, while the Girl’s will be divided into two pools and also play a round robin. All teams will then advance to the Boy’s and Girl’s playoff rounds, with round robin rankings used to determine their positions in the playoff round.

Live results will be available at PEICurling.com.

Evening and Weekend Ice Rentals available to start your Olympic curling career!

You’ve watched it on TV at the Olympics, the Scotties, the Brier and the Grand Slam. You may even have seen the Pre-Trials live in Summerside. Now’s the time to get off that couch or stadium seat and go curling yourself! Get the family or the gang together and book a sheet of our great curling ice!

We have a few “snowbird” members who are heading south between now and golf season. Consequently, we have some rare evening rental spots available immediately through April 3rd  on Tuesdays at 6:30 and 8:30Wednesdays at 8:30, and Thursdays at 8:30 pm. We also have limited weekend times available. These book up fast and change often, so give us a call for more info.

It will cost you just 75 bucks and tax for a two-hour one-sheet rental (time enough for a full eight-end game, or a six end game and some instruction and practice) for up to eight persons. That’s only five dollars and change per person per hour, probably less than a small popcorn at the movie theatre!

We provide loaner curling brushes and sliders – just bring clean sneakers, and wear stretchy or loose pants and a light jacket. We can also provide basic curling instruction, and there’s bar service, too!

And remember, the next Winter Olympics is only four years away. If those guys from Minnesota could win a medal, maybe you can, too! If your goals don’t include a gold medal, curling is also great exercise, a lot of fun, and a sport you can play long after those hockey players have hung up their skates.

So, hurry hard, get off the couch, and give us a call at (902) 566-4427 or email cornwallcurling@eastlink.ca.

World Junior Ch’ships begin Sat. in Scotland. Cornwall’s Lenentine there as alternate (Curling Canada)

Update: Weather is impacting the teams’ travel plans.

Two teams with significant international experience will open play on Saturday in the 2018 World Junior Curling Championship, staged in Curl Aberdeen at Aberdeen, Scotland.

Two members of Kaitlyn Jones’s Canadian women’s team from Halifax were world junior gold-medallists two years ago in Tårnby, Denmark, while Tyler Tardi’s Canadian men’s team from Langley, B.C., placed fifth at the 2017 World Juniors in Gangneung, South Korea.

Canadian women’s vice-skip Kristin Clarke and second Karlee Burgess played for Mary Fay’s world championship team in 2016; Jones, lead Lindsey Burgess (Karlee’s cousin), alternate Lauren Lenentine [from Cornwall, PEI] and coach Andrew Atherton round out the team.

Tardi, meanwhile, has vice-skip Sterling Middleton, second Jordan Tardi (Tyler’s brother) and coach Paul Tardi (their dad) back from the 2017 squad that lost to Norway in a playoff tiebreaker in Gangneung. Lead Zachary Curtis and alternate Jacques Gauthier (cousin to Tyler and Jordan) also are making the trip.

Tardi, Middleton, Burgess and Fay also won gold in the mixed team competition at the 2016 Youth Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway.

The Canadian women will be seeking a fifth straight trip to the medal podium; Kelsey Rocque won back-to-back gold medals in 2014 and 2015, followed by Fay’s triumph in 2016 and a bronze medal from Kristen Streifel last year in Gangeung.

Canada’s men’s team, meanwhile, will be seeking a leading 19th world junior men’s gold medal (Scotland is next with 10), but first since Braden Calvert’s victory in 2015 at Tallinn, Estonia.

The Canadian teams will be in a 10-team (of each gender) round-robin draw that leads to the four-team Olympic-style semifinals (first place vs. fourth place; second place vs. third place), on Friday, March 9 (there will be no playoff tiebreakers).

Canada’s women open their round-robin schedule on Saturday at 9 a.m. local time (5 a.m. AT) against China’s Zixin Wang. The Canadian men get onto the ice for the first time at 2 p.m. local time (10 a.m. AT) against Switzerland’s Jan Hess, who finished out of the playoffs at the 2017 World Juniors.

The women’s field is headed by reigning world champion Isabella Wranå of Sweden, and also includes South Korea’s Min Ji Kim, who lost to Canada in the bronze-medal game last year, but won bronze in 2016 in Denmark.

On the men’s side, only one of the 2017 men’s medallists is back, as silver-medallist Andrew Stopera of the United States returns with his 2017 lineup fully intact.

The women’s field will be rounded out by teams from Norway, Russia, Scotland, Switzerland, Turkey and the United States.

There will be other men’s teams from China, Germany, South Korea (gold medallists last year but with a different team), Norway, Russia, Scotland and Sweden.

Cornwall’s Mitchell Schut rink wins PEI Credit Unions Prov. U18 Boy’s title (updated with team photos)

It took two tries today, but the Mitchell Schut team came out winners over their Cornwall clubmates, skipped by Mitchell’s brother Devin, in the Provincial Under 18 Boy’s Curling Championship, sponsored by PEI Credit Unions, taking place at the Silver Fox in Summerside. Mitchell, who had won two of the three modified triple knockout sections, could have taken the title with a win this morning, but lost after leading 6-1 after 5 ends when his brother came back with a deuce in the sixth, a stolen single in the seventh, and a deuce in the 8th to tie the game 6-all, and then went on to steal three points in the extra for a 9-6 win, forcing the afternoon deciding match.

Lauren Ferguson rink win U18 Girl’s, Devin Schut steals win, forces deciding Boy’s game

It’s down to one game, at 2:15 pm, at the Provincial Under 18 Curling Championships, sponsored by PEI Credit Unions, and taking place at the Silver Fox in Summerside.

This morning, the Lauren Ferguson rink from Cornwall, Crapaud, and Charlottetown edged Cornwall’s Emily Sanderson foursome by a 5-4 score to win the Girl’s division, and advance to the  2018 Canadian Under-18  Boys and Girls Curling Championship, April 9-14 in St. Andrews NB. A steal in the 7th end gave Ferguson a 5-2 lead coming home. Sanderson scored a deuce in the final end, but needed a triple to tie. Sanderson would have needed to win twice today, while Ferguson, who won two out of the three section finals in the event, only needed to win once, and did it on the first try.

Playing with the winning Ferguson rink were third Katie Shaw, second Alexis Burris and lead Lexie Murray, with coach David Murphy.

Rounding out the Sanderson finalist team were third Emma Coffin, second stone Kaylee Stewart, and lead Anna Maria MacDonald, with coach Edgar Coffin.

The Boy’s championship round, between teams skipped by brothers Mitchell and Devin Schut, is going to a deciding game at 2:15 pm. Mitchell Schut had won two of the three event sections and was looking good to wrap up the title with a win this morning, leading 6-1 after 5 ends in the eight end contest. However, older brother Devin pulled off a tremendous finish, taking a deuce in the sixth, stealing a single in the seventh, and a deuce in the 8th to tie the game 6-all, and force an extra end. Devin picked up three points in the extra for a 9-6 win, and to force the 2:15 pm deciding match.

PEI Credit Unions U18 Monday Ch’ship round set

The two Monday championship round finalists in both the Boy’s and the Girl’s divisions have now been determined in the Provincial Under 18 Curling Championships, sponsored by PEI Credit Unions, and taking place at the Silver Fox in Summerside.

On the Boy’s side, the Mitchell Schut team will be playing the rink skipped by Mitchell’s older brother Devin, who won the “C” final of the modified triple knockout draw on Sunday afternoon.  Both teams are from the Cornwall Curling Club. Devin Schut came back from a 3-1 deficit after five ends of play, scoring a deuce, a single, and a triple to beat Charlottetown’s Chase MacMillan team 7-3 in the C final. Mitchell Schut, who won both the A and B sections, against MacMillan and the host club’s Cruz Pineau, respectively, lost to MacMillan 7-6 in an extra end in the C semi-finals, while Devin Schut eliminated Pineau from the four-team draw with an 8-1 win.

(L-R): Devin and Mitchell Schut, with Alec Huestis and Dylan Moase from the Devin Schut team

The Schut siblings now face off in the Championship Round on Monday at 10 am. If Mitchell, who won two sections, wins that game, he’ll take the title. If not, the Schuts will play again, in a sudden-death match at 2 pm.

It’s a similar situation in the Girl’s section, with Lauren Ferguson and her Cornwall, Charlottetown, and Crapaud rink having won sections B and C, with Cornwall’s Emily Sanderson winning the “A”. These two teams played off in all three section finals, with Ferguson winning the C on Sunday afternoon in an exciting finish, with Sanderson stealing the final end to tie the game, and Ferguson taking a deuce in the extra end to win 7-5.

(L-R): Lexie Murray, Alexis Burris, Lauren Ferguson from Team Ferguson

If Ferguson wins the 10 am game on Monday, she’ll win the championship. If Sanderson wins, they play off again in a winner-take-all game at 2 pm. Five teams took part in the Girl’s section.

Live results are available at PEICurling.com.

The winning teams advance to the 2018 Canadian Under-18  Boys and Girls Curling Championship, April 9-14 in St. Andrews NB.

U18 Ch’ship update: Girl’s section down to 2 teams, Devin Schut vs Chase MacMillan in Boy’s C final

There are at most three games left in both the Boy’s and Girl’s divisions of the Provincial Under 18 Curling Championships, sponsored by PEI Credit Unions, following play this morning at Summerside’s Silver Fox.

There WILL be a Monday championship round in the boy’s division, as the Mitchell Schut rink from Cornwall, who won two sections, and could have wrapped it up with a win in section C, will not advance to the C final after losing 7-6 in an extra end this morning to the Chase MacMillan rink from Charlottetown. The other boy’s game saw Cornwall’s Devin Schut team eliminate the host club’s Cruz Pineau rink, with an 8-1 victory. The Chase MacMillan and Devin Schut rinks square off in the “C” final at 2 this afternoon, with the winner advancing to the Championship Round on Monday at 10 am and, if necessary, 2 pm. As a double section winner, Mitchell Schut will have a “double life” in the championship round, taking the title if he wins either game, while his opponent, the winner of the C final, would need to win both.

On the girl’s side of the modified triple knockout competition, the Emily Sanderson rink, who won the “A” section on Saturday morning, eliminated her Cornwall clubmates the Sydney Howatt foursome, stealing singles in the last two ends of a close 5-4 game this morning, and advances to the “C” final at 2 pm against B section winner Lauren Ferguson, and her Cornwall, Crapaud, and Charlottetown squad. These two teams will have played in all three section finals. The winner of this afternoon’s game will have a big advantage in Monday’s championship round, capturing the championship with a win at either 10 am or 2 pm, while the opposing team would have to win both matches.

Live results are available at PEICurling.com.

The winning teams advance to the 2018 Canadian Under-18  Boys and Girls Curling Championship, April 9-14 in St. Andrews NB.

Mitchell Schut rink wins 1st 2 PEI Credit Unions U18 Boy’s sections, Sanderson, Ferguson win girl’s A and B

The Mitchell Schut rink from the Cornwall Curling Club has a big advantage going into Sunday boy’s play at the PEI Credit Unions Provincial Under 18 Curling Championships being played at the Silver Fox in Summerside. Four boy’s and five girl’s teams are entered.

Left to right: Liam Kelly, Colin MacKenzie, Mitchell Schut

The Schut squad won both the A and B section finals of the boy’s modified triple knockout draw on Saturday, which gives them a big advantage in the championship. If they also win the C final, Sunday at 2 pm, they will be champions without having to play the two-game championship round on Monday at 10 and 2. If another team wins the C, they would have to beat Schut twice on Monday, while a Schut win in either game would give them the title.

Lauren Ferguson (right) delivers a rock, with Lexie Murray (left) and Alexis Burris (centre) getting ready to sweep

On the girl’s side, there were separate winners of the A and B sections, with Cornwall’s Emily Sanderson rink taking the “A” and the Lauren Ferguson foursome from Cornwall, Crapaud, and Charlottetown taking the B.

The winning teams advance to the 2018 Canadian Under-18  Boys and Girls Curling Championship, April 9-14 in St. Andrews NB.

Saturday recap – boys.

The Mitchell Schut rink beat Charlottetown’s Chase MacMillan team 8-2 in the “A” final on Saturday morning, scoring 4 points in the 2nd end. They then took on the team skipped by Mitchell’s older brother Devin in a “B” semi-final. It was a closely fought game, with Devin leading 3-2 coming home. A final end miss by the other Schut team gave Mitchell a winning deuce, without having to throw his last rock. Final score: 4-3. The other B semi saw the young Cruz Pineau team from Summerside, helped out by an older player, Parker MacFadyen, substituting for a regular team member in this event, make a big comeback over MacMillan. Pineau was trailing 5-2 after 7, but tied it with a triple in eight, and stole a single in the 9th for a 6-5 win and a ticket to the B final.

Schut began the B final against Pineau with a triple, and picked up another one in the 7th, ending the game early with a 10-3 score. Schut now plays MacMillan at 10 am Sunday, with Pineau playing Devin Schut. The winners face off in the “C” final at 2 pm.

Saturday recap- girls

The Emily Sanderson team beat the Lauren Ferguson foursome 5-3 in the “A” final, scoring only single points. Ferguson tied the game at 3-3 with a deuce in the fifth and a sixth end single steal, but a pair of Sanderson singles in the final two ends gave her the win.

The Sydney Howatt Canada Games Training Team beat Cornwall clubmate Clara Jack 10-4 in the morning draw, scoring half of those points in the second end. They then took on Ferguson, the other Canada Games Training Team, in the B semi. This was a very intensely-played game, with Ferguson blanking the first end, and Howatt stealing the second. The teams traded singles in ends three through five, with Ferguson stealing the sixth and Howatt taking the seventh to tie the game at 3-3. A deuce in eight gave Ferguson a 5-3 win to advance them to the “B” final.

The “B” final was a rematch of the “A” final, but with a very different result. The teams traded singles in the first two ends, but then Ferguson took over, following up a four-point third end with a steal of three in the fourth and a stolen deuce in the fifth. It was handshake time, with a final score of 10-1 for Ferguson. The “B”  final win also advanced Ferguson directly to the 2 pm Sunday “C” final against the winner of a 10 am game between Sanderson and Howatt. The Clara Jack and Rachel Maclean rinks are now out of the competition following “C” event losses Saturday.

Cornwall’s Lauren Lenentine heading to world ch’ship with Nova Scotia squad (Guardian)

CORNWALL, P.E.I. – Lauren Lenentine’s curling season has been extended and has required a passport.

The Cornwall Curling Club skip leaves Tuesday for Scotland as the alternate for the Nova Scotia-based squad that will represent Canada at the World Junior Curling Championship.

The Kaitlyn Jones rink will represent Nova Scotia at the world junior girls curling championship next month in Scotland. The Truro Curling Club recently held an event where friends, fans and family members gathered to wish the team well. Members of the foursome are, from left, skip Kaitlyn Jones, third Kristin Clarke, second Karlee Burgess, lead Lindsey Burgess and alternate Lauren Lenentine. – Joey Smith

“It’s kind of incredible,” said Lenentine, a 17-year-old New Dominion native. “Not many people have the chance to say that they represented Canada at an international event.”

The Kaitlyn Jones-skipped rink defeated Quebec 5-3 a month ago to win the national championship in Shawinigan, Que. Lenentine skipped P.E.I. to a 5-0 start at the event and finished 5-5 as all four Atlantic provinces finished in the top eight.

“We had a really good week at nationals,” said Lenentine, who has three years of junior eligibility remaining. “It shows that the P.E.I. curling teams can compete at that level.”

The Grade 12 student at Bluefield High School said she was watching the men’s final in Shawinigan when she got a text from her coach, Pat Quilty, to come downstairs at the rink. When Lenentine walked around the corner, there was the Nova Scotia squad. Lenentine wasn’t sure what was going on at first, but she didn’t hesitate when they asked her to join them for the worlds.

“It’s not something you kind of expect to happen,” she admitted, noting “a lot of tears were shed.”

RELATED: Nova Scotia team going for gold.

Lenentine knows she might not see any ice time in Scotland, and she’s fine with that.

“I just want to enjoy the experience and do my best at helping them achieve the goals that they set,” Lenentine said, noting she has more of a support role dealing with rocks and ice conditions. “To have this experience and be able to bring it back home is going to be something good to share with others.”

Lenentine said she has played against some of her new teammates since 2013 and knew them from competing at the same events. She’s had a few practices as part of Team Canada and attended send-off ceremonies last weekend at curling clubs in Halifax and Truro.

The team leaves Tuesday, has a practice day Friday and starts play on Saturday.

“A” Finals set at U18 in Summerside

The 10 am Saturday “A” section finals of the boy’s and girl’s modified triple knockout draws are set at the PEI Credit Unions Provincial Under 18 Curling Championships, which got underway on Friday at the Silver Fox in Summerside, with four boy’s and five girl’s teams participating.

The Emily Sanderson rink from the Cornwall Curling Club will face the Lauren Ferguson squad from the Cornwall, Crapaud, and Charlottetown clubs in the girl’s “A” final, while Chase MacMillan and his Charlottetown team will take on Cornwall’s Mitchell Schut foursome in the boy’s.

Sanderson beat clubmate Sydney Howatt 7-3 in her opener, aided by a three-point fourth end and a stolen deuce in the fifth. She then downed another Cornwall team, the Clara Jack rink, by a 10-1 score, taking four points in the second end, stealing singles in the next two, and deuces in five and six to bring the game to an early conclusion. Ferguson had only one game, beating Cornwall’s Rachel MacLean team 4-1.

MacLean suffered her second loss in the evening draw, losing 8-2 to Howatt, and needs a win at 2 pm on Saturday to remain in the competition. Howatt and Jack faceoff at 10 am Saturday in the “B” section.

There was only one draw in the boy’s division, and both games were extremely close, with Chase MacMillan edging Devin Schut of Cornwall 4-3, with Schut getting all his points in the last two ends, and Devin’s brother Mitchell coming back from a 4-3 deficit against the host club’s Cruz Pineau rink, who scored a triple in the fifth end, recording a tying single in the seventh, and stealing the final end for a 5-4 win.

Besides the 10 am “A” final, the Schut brothers square off in one game, with the Pineau facing MacMillan in the other, in 2 pm Saturday “B” section matches.

With the “modified” knockout format, teams competing in section finals drop down to the next section, and can win more than one section. The “B” finals go at 6 pm on Saturday, with the “C” on Sunday at 2. The boy’s and girl’s championship rounds go on Monday at 10 am and 2 pm. If a team wins all three sections their championship round won’t be needed.

A double section winner will have a “double life” in the championship round, winning the event if they take either game, while their opponent would have to win both.

This year’s winning teams advance to the 2018 Canadian Under-18  Boys and Girls Curling Championship, April 9-14 in St. Andrews NB.

PEI Credit Unions U18 Ch’ships start this afternoon in S’side, with most teams from Cornwall

The Provincial Under 18 Curling Championships, sponsored by PEI Credit Unions, with male and female divisions for curlers a maximum of 17 years of age on June 30, 2017, take place February 23-26, 2018 at the Silver Fox curling club in Summerside. Six of the nine teams competing are from the Cornwall Curling Club, and another is from the Cornwall, Crapaud, and Charlottetown clubs.

Last year’s winners were the Donald DeWolfe rink from the Cornwall, Silver Fox, and Western Community clubs, and the Lauren Lenentine team from Cornwall. These skips are not back this year, so there will be two new championship rinks. Last year’s runner-up rinks, skipped by Cornwall’s Mitchell Schut and Rachel MacLean, are among this year’s entrants of four boy’s and five girl’s teams.

Both the boy’s and girl’s sections play modified triple knockout draws, with the girl’s teams starting Friday at 2 pm, and the boys hitting the ice at 6 pm. The winners from each of the three sections will advance to the two-game championship round on Monday at 10 am and 2 pm. With the modified format, section winners drop down to compete in the next section. If a team wins all three sections, they will win the event without a championship round. A double section winner will have a “double life” in the championship round, winning the event if they take either game, while their opponent would have to win both.

This year’s winning teams advance to the 2018 Canadian Under-18  Boys and Girls Curling Championship, April 9-14 in St. Andrews NB.

Live, end by end results from the provincial event will be available at PEICurling.com.

Draw Tree

Explanation for MA/WA and MB/WB:
1. One team wins all three qualifiers: Championship Round is not required.

2. One team wins two qualifiers. They play in both X and Z (and win the event if they win either game), the other winner plays in Y (and has to win both games).

3. Three separate winners: the team that played in the most qualifying games* plays in Z and the other winners play off in X and Y. If there is a tie in number of qualifying games played, then the team that qualified earliest goes to Z and the other two teams play off in X and Y.

*Qualifying games have game number/letter highlighted in yellow on the schedule.

PEI Credit Unions U18 Ch’ships start Friday in S’side, with most teams from Cornwall

Newson, who was a finalist in both the A and B sections of the modified triple knockout draw, and won the “C”, earned a bye to the final, while “A” section winner MacKenzie eliminated “B” winner Mitchell Schut from Cornwall with a 7-4 win in the morning semi-final to advance to the deciding game.

In the final, Newson, whose team includes third Melissa Morrow, second Andrew MacDougall, and lead stone Miranda Ellis, had a 4-1 lead at the fourth end break, scoring singles in the first two ends and a deuce in the fourth. MacKenzie, who was also a finalist last year, narrowed the gap to 1 with a deuce in the fifth, but a Newson triple in the sixth put him ahead 7-3. MacKenzie was kept to a single in seven, and ran out of rocks in the eighth.

This afternoon’s winner will advance to the Canadian Mixed Curling Championships, November 5-10 2018 at the Fort Rouge Curling Club in Winnipeg.

Jamie Newson edges Mitchell Schut to win PEI Mixed “C” event and bye to ch’ship final

The Jamie Newson rink from the Silver Fox and Charlottetown curling clubs, scored a single point in the eighth end after blanking ends four through seven, to edge the Mitchell Schut team from Cornwall 3-2 Sunday evening to win the “C” final of the PEI Mixed Curling Championships at the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton, and a bye to the 2 pm Monday championship game.

There were separate winners of each of the three modified triple knockout sections, with the Tyler MacKenzie rink from Charlottetown winning the “A”, Team Schut taking the  B, and Newson, along with third Melissa Morrow, 2nd stone Andrew MacDougall, and lead Miranda Ellis capturing the final section.

According to the rules, in the event that there are three section winners, the team that played in the most section finals gets the bye to the championship final. The Newson team, the only one to play in all three section finals, will now play the winner of the 10 am game between the MacKenzie and Schut foursomes, at 2 pm Monday, for the right to advance to the Canadian Mixed Curling Championships, November 5-10 2018 at the Fort Rouge Curling Club in Winnipeg.

Live results from the PEI Mixed Championship are available at PEICurling.com.

Cornwall’s Mitchell Schut team wins PEI Mixed “B” final over Jamie Newson squad

The Mitchell Schut team from here at the Cornwall Curling Club, which includes second Nick Johnston from Schut’s Canada Games Training Team, along with clubmates Sydney Howatt at lead and Sierra Clyke at third from the Canada Games Training Team skipped by Howatt, have captured the “B” section final and a spot in the Monday championship round at the PEI Mixed Curling Championship being played at the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton.

Photo (from Canada Games trials) L-R: Schut, Johnston, Clyke, Howatt

After handing “A” section winner and last year’s runner-up Tyler MacKenzie his first loss of the event, by a 5-3 score, on Saturday afternoon, Schut beat the Jamie Newson team from the Silver Fox and Charlottetown clubs by a 6-4 score in the “B” final on Sunday morning. Schut started off the game by stealing a triple over Newson, who was kept to singles in the next two ends. Schut followed a 4th end single with a stolen 5th end deuce to lead 6-2. Newson took the next two ends, but ran out of rocks in the eighth.

Newson now plays MacKenzie, with Schut taking on Summerside’s Corey Miller, who downed the host club’s Daryl MacDonald rink 9-1 Sunday morning, in the 2 pm “C” semi-finals. The winners advance to the 6 pm “C” final.

The two game championship round against the section winners goes at 10 am and, if needed, 2 pm on Monday. If either MacKenzie or Schut advances to and wins the “C” final, they, as double section winners, would have to be beaten twice on Monday, so the second game in the championship round would be required if the other team won the first. If there are three separate section winners, the team that played in the most section finals would get a bye to the 2 pm game.

Nine teams, with representatives from all seven dedicated PEI curling clubs took part in this year’s event. The winning team advances to the Canadian Mixed Curling Championships, November 5-10 2018 at the Fort Rouge Curling Club in Winnipeg.
